Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexstar Tires and Wheels AM20352 Review

Today we're going to review the part number AM20352. This is the Dexstar 14-inch by 5 1/2 inch Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel. Has the the 5, 1, 4 and-a-half inch bolt pattern, is white in color. This wheel is a sturdy steel construction. Has the nice white powder coat finish over e-coat primer on the whole wheel from and back. Give you excellent corrosion-resistance.

This is your standard 8-spoke trailer wheel pattern design. This is a very high-quality wheel that meets the Department of Transportation's specifications. The rim dimension on this is 14 inches in diameter, 5 and-a-half inches in width. If you go to measure that the way you would measure on a wheel, you're actually going to measuring inside the inside or bead seat to bead seat. Basically when a tire is mounted on here, the tire beads with seat right here. If we measure inside the inside, you can see 14-inch diameter.

We'll do the same on the width, inside to inside which is the bead seat to bead seat. If we put the ruler on the width, you can see it's 5 1/2 inches. 14 inches diameter, 5 1/2 inches of width. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. If you want to measure the bolt pattern on a wheel that is an odd number lugs like in this case 5, you just pick one of the wheel holes to start with then you'll measure from that hole the center of that hole directly across to either one of the holes right across from it. When you measure it, you're actually going to starting hole.

You'll do from the center. The hole you go to would be the further edge, the outer edge. In this case we're going to measure from this hole to this hole. Again, the starting hole start at the center, the outer edge, furthest edge is 4 1/2 inches. 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

This wheel does you a half inch by 20 wheel lug size. The pilot hub diameter which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel goes over the hub on your trailer. The diameter of that opening is going to be right at 3.19 inches. The weight capacity on this wheel is 2040 pounds. That should do it for the review on part number AM20352. The Dexstar 14-inch by 5 1/2 inch Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. .

Ordered the Dexstar rim to match what I had on the other side of the trailer, pretty much a routine purchase but I was IMPRESSED by the quick turn around after placing my order PLUS they provided faster shipping at no extra charge. Spent some time looking at other items that are available and will definitely use etrailer again. I have already told a friend about the site. Good Job and Excellent Customer Service !!!!! 95133

Wheel order went quickly and arrived on my porch days later. Couldn't have been easier. Would suggest to packaging dept to NOT use staples to position cardboard between product. First jolt from carrier broke it loose and left staples exposed to product which could have damaged product painted finish. 163261

  • Recommend Replacement Trailer Tire and Wheel for E78 14ST Tire
  • The closest trailer tire size we will have available for an E78 14 ST tire is a 205/75-14 tire. Before ordering replacement tires or wheels, you will want to measure to make sure you will have clearance. The overall diameter of this size tire is 26.3 inches, and the width is 7.8 inches. For a replacement wheel and tire combination, we have the Kenda Trailer Tire w/ 14 Inch White Wheel, part # AM3S440. You will want to check the weight capacity of your axle or trailer, as this wheel and...

  • Replacement Tires and Wheels for a Utility Trailer with P185/70R14 Tires and 5 on 4-1/2 Wheels
  • I would recommend replacing the tires along with the wheels on your utility trailer. The tires that you currently have on your trailer are passenger car tires which can be identified by the P at the beginning of the tire size and it is not a common trailer tire size. Trailer tires will have an ST, or special trailer, designation on the tire size. Trailer tires are constructed with a stronger sidewall and can handle higher air pressures which are needed when carrying a load on a trailer....

  • Recommend Replacement Spare Trailer Wheel and Tire For Utility Trailer w/ 185/75R14 Tires
  • The closest replacement tire size we have for your existing 185/75R14 tire is going to be a 205/75-14, like the Kenda Tire and Wheel # AM3S440. You would need to measure on your trailer to see if you will have room to mount this tire. The overall diameter of this size tire is 26.3 inches, and the width is 7.8 inches. The load capacity of the # AM3S440 is 1,760 lbs at 50 PSI. Using the different-sized spare for emergency would be acceptable to get where you are going, in an emergency...

  • 14 Inch Trailer Wheels Rated for 2040 Pounds at 65 PSI for ST205/75R14 Trailer Tires
  • We have Dexstar wheel # AM20363 that will accept the 205/75-14 Load Range D tire. The wheel is rated for 2,040 lbs at 65 psi just like the tire. It has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. Another option is white spoke wheel # AM20352 or white mini mod # AM20365. Or we have aluminum wheel # AM22330HWTB or # AM22329, both rated the same. If you need galvanized for corrosion resistance we have # AM20364. I have linked videos of all of these wheels for you.

  • Spare Tire and Wheel Recommendations for a Nitro Dual Axle Boat Trailer
  • The 14 inch tire on your boat trailer is most likely a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. You will need a 14 inch wheel to match the other wheels on your trailer. I have included a link to an FAQ that shows how to measure for bolt pattern. The wheel that you referenced, # AM20504, is a 15 inch wheel and it has an offset which is not all that common. If you just want a wheel, # AM20352, is the most common. In the event that your wheels do have an offset, you would use # AM20304. For a standard...

  • Will the Dead Bolt Spare Tire Lock # 4324 Work with a Wheel and Tire Rack or Just Block A Stud Hole
  • The Dead Bolt Spare Tire Lock, # 4324, is designed to block one of the stud holes in the wheel. The adjustable design of the lock will fit rims from 1/4 to 7/8 inches thick so it may be possible to use it to lock a wheel to a spare tire rack of carrier. As long as the thickness of the wheel and rack or carrier are less than 7/8 inches thick, this lock should work to secure the wheel. • How to Measure Width and Bolt Pattern on a Trailer Wheel
  • To measure the width of a trailer wheel you will measure from where the tire beads will seat on the wheel. That will be from the inside of the inner wheel flange to the inside of the outer wheel flange, not from edge to edge of the wheel. To measure the bolt pattern on a wheel with an even amount of lugs ( 4-lug, 6-lug, 8-lug ) you will measure from the center of two bolt holes directly across from each other. If the wheel is a 5-lug wheel you will measure from the center of one hole...

  • Is Tire Weight Capacity Listed per Tire or Per Axle
  • It would seem that the 1,750 rating that your tire has is the weight rating, but most ST205/75-14 tires with a Load Range of C have a 1,870 lb capacity at 50 psi like part # AM10229. That would mean that when you combine the two tires you have an overall tire rating of 3,500 lbs. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • What is the Difference Between the Dexstar Mini Mod Wheels and the Steel Spoke Wheels
  • Both the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20352 and the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20365 that you referenced are made of the same material and have the same powdercoat finish so either would be just as great as the other when being submerged. If I were you I would pick the design that you think looks better since aside from that the wheels are identical. I attached review videos for both wheels for you to check out as well.

  • Will an ST215/75-14 Trailer Tire Fit on a 6 Inch Wide Wheel
  • If your trailer uses a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern then you can use wheel # AM20352 which is 5-1/2 inches wide. Or for a tire and wheel combo with a Load range C 215/75D14 bias trailer tire use # AM3S550. A 215/75-14 tire will fit on a 6 inch wide rim. The rim width is not the issue since the tire width is over 8 inches so there will be no clearance issue.

  • How to Identify Trailer Axles

Since this capacity is per tire you would have more than enough capacity since you will be using two of these tires. Total tire capacity would be 4,080 lbs.
