Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexstar Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM20202 Review

Today we're going to review part number AM20202. This is the Americana, 13 inch by four and a half inch, solid center, steel trailer wheel with the four on four bolt pattern and white in color. This wheel is a sturdy steel construction. Has a nice white cover coat finish over an e-coat primer on the whole wheel. This will give excellent corrosion resistance. This design is the solid center design.

It doesn't have any spokes or holes. This is a high quality wheel that will meet the Department Of Transportation specifications. A few dimensions on this. It is a 13 inch diameter and a four and a half inch wide wheel. When you go to measure a wheel what you're going to be measuring is where the tire seats on the wheel. When you mount a tire onto this wheel, the beads would actually sit right here around the beads seats.

When you measure the dimension, the diameter is going to be measured bead seat to bead seat, so inside the inside, not outside the outside. Basically if you put a ruler on bead seat to bead seat you can see 13 inches diameter. We'll do the same on the width, inside the inside or bead seat to bead seat. In this case the width of the wheel is going to be four and a half inches. So 13 inch diameter, four and a half inches wide. Now the bolt panel on this as you can see is a four lug, four inch bolt pattern. The best way to measure the bolt pattern, especially on a wheel that has even number of lugs like in this case four, just pick any hole then measure from that hole center directly across to the center of the hole right across from it.

If we go center to center you can see four inches. Four on four inches is the bolt pattern. It does use a wheel bolt size of a half inch by 20. The pilot hole diameter, right here, this is the large hole in the center that goes over the hub on your trailer. The diameter on that is going to be 2.84 inches, and the right capacity on this wheel is 1,660 pounds. But that should do it for the review on part number AM20202, the Americana, 13 inch by four and a half inch, solid center, steel trailer wheel with the four and four inch bolt pattern.

Mounted right up as you would assume. Got some good weight to them, and feel solid. Sure they will do great, but about to take them on a 1000 mile round trip test drive. Will report back with any issues, otherwise assume I'm happy! 691817

The rims I bought were built with what has to be 10 or 12 gauge steel. Stronger then some chrome car wheels that I have bought. Thanks. 352525

I placed an order for one 13" wheel, 4 at 4 pattern with a very polite young lady. I had looked up the one I needed on their easy to use (I'm proof) website. The wheel was in stock and then on my front porch in just a couple of days via UPS. Product was exactly what I needed and did not require any modifications. 284456

This wheel has performed perfectly.

  • Replacement Options for a 13 Inch Rim with a 2.5 Inch Diameter Pilot Hole
At this time we do not have a 13 inch, 4 on 4 rim with a 2.5 inch diameter pilot hole but I may have a couple of options available for you. Finding a wheel with a matching pilot diameter is only a concern if you have hubs that are hub-centric. This type of hub uses the hub bore in order to center the wheel. This is what makes matching the pilot hole diameter extremely important. Wheel bolts are typically used instead of lug nuts to attach the wheel on these style hubs. This type is more...

  • Is the Diameter of a Trailer Wheel Pilot Hole Important When Choosing a Replacement Wheel
A pilot hole that is larger would not be a problem as long as the wheel is stud piloted (the wheel is centered on the hub by the studs and lug nuts). You will be able to tell if the hub uses wheel bolts or lug nuts. If it uses wheel bolts, it is a hub-centric wheel and you will need one with the correct pilot hole diameter. If it uses lug nuts then it is stud piloted. The Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel, # AM20202, is the only conventional, non-spoke wheel we carry that is 13 x 4-1/2...

  • Availability of a 13 Inch Trailer Wheel with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern and 2-1/2 Inch Pilot Hole
The pilot hole on trailer wheel # AM20202 is 2.84 inches. Wheel # AM20222DX is closer at 2.65 inches. None of the 13 inch wheels with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern that we carry have a pilot hole at 2.5 inches. The pilot hole only matters if 1) the wheel secures to the hub using wheel bolts instead of lug nuts or 2) the wheel secures with lug nuts but the pilot hole is smaller than what the hub requires. If the wheel secures to the hub with lug nuts then this means that the wheel centers...

  • Measuring for Bolt Pattern on a 1961 Shasta Compact Camper
Measuring center to center from a stud to one next to it on a 4 on 4 bolt pattern is about 2-13/16 inches. If you measured outside to outside it would around 3-1/4 inches. If you had 5 lugs at 3-1/4 inches center to center it would be a 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. To get a definite measurement I recommend measuring using the holes on the rim or removing the hub and measuring so you can measure straight across.

If my math's correct, a 165/65-8 tire like part # AM1HP22 has a section width of 6.6 inches and a diameter of 16.5 inches. A 215/60-8 tire like part # AM1HP28 has a section width of 8.9 inches and a diameter of 18.1 inches.

  • Can a 205/75-15 Trailer Tire Fit In Place of a 185/80-13 Trailer Tire
As far as height, a 185/80-13 tire will be about 24.4 inches tall. A 205/75-15 tire will be 27.1 inches tall. This is a difference of 2.7 inches, meaning that the larger tire size will be 1.35 inches closer to the fenders. But you also have to worry about the extra width. A 185 has a section width of 7.2 inches. A 205 has a section width of 8.1 inches. This means that the larger size will be nearly a full inch closer to the trailer frame. If the height and width are fine then you...
