Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Americana Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM20043 Review

Today we're going to review part number AM20043. This is the Americana 10 inch by 6 inch steel trailer wheel with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern and a galvanized finish. Now this wheel is a sturdy steel construction, has a nice galvanized finish over the whole wheel, which provides superior protection from rust and corrosion. Now the galvanized finished wheels are usually used on trailers that are near water like a boat trailer or a jet ski trailer. This is a high quality wheel, meets department of transportation specifications. A few specs on this, the diameter is going to be 10 inches inside to inside and the width is 6 inches and when you measure the diameter and the width on a wheel, you're measuring actually where the tire beads would seat on the wheel. When a tire is mounted, the beads will seat right here so when you measure the width, it's inside to inside and on the diameter, it's the same way, inside to inside.

To give you an idea on this wheel, the widest point if you put the ruler on it you can see is going to be right at 10 inches for the diameter. On the width, again, inside to inside, it's going to be right at 6 inches. Now the bolt pattern on this is a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. On a wheel that's an even number of lugs, in this case, 4, when you measure the bolt pattern, all you have to do is measure from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. If we put a ruler on this, center to center, it'll be right at 4 inches, so 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. This wheel does use a lug wheel lug size of a 1/2 inch by 20.

Now the pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel goes over the hub on your trailer on this wheel is going to measure right at 2.8 inches. The weight capacity on this wheel is 1,650 pounds. That should do it for the review on part number AM20043, the Americana 10 inch by 6 inch steel trailer wheel with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern and the galvanized finish.

  • How to Measure Bolt Pattern to Replace Trailer Wheels on a 1986 Tracker Party Barge Trailer
  • The modern equivalent to a 20.5x8-10 is going to be a 205/65-10. The bolt pattern is either going to be 4 on 4 inch or 5 on 4-1/2 inch. So if it requires 4 bolts then you likely have a 4 on 4 pattern. If it is 5 bolts then it is likely 5 on 4-1/2. To be sure you can use the help article I have linked that explains how to measure for bolt pattern. For 10x6 inch wheels we have a few options. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern we have white steel wheel # AM20041. For a galvanized version we have...

  • Choosing Replacement Axle for Trailer
  • It sounds like you may have an agricultural hub and we do not carry any hubs that fit a spindle that is 1.375" in diameter all the way around. In order to be sure about the exact hub you need, the best option is to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. The other option is to replace your axle to more easily find compatible parts. In order to choose the correct...

  • Are Tire/Wheel Combos Available With 2-1/2 Inch Pilot
  • All of the 205/65-10 tire/wheel combos we carry have a pilot of 2-5/8 inch. The pilot hole will only matter if the wheel is secured to the hub with bolts instead of lug nuts. If that is the case then it has to be exact. If it does attach with lug nuts the pilot hole cannot be smaller than the hub it is going on but it can be larger. If you are using lug nuts and have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern I recommend part # AM3H400. This has a galvanized steel wheel with a 205/65-10 bias-ply tire...

  • The Steel Trailer Wheel, part # AM20048 has a 2.8 inch pilot hole as you said. Although it may be very close, it should fit your 2-3/4 inch hub on your trailer. You may want to take another measurement of your hub just to make sure.
