Video Transcript for Slime Tire Tread Depth Gauge Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Slime tire tread depth gauge, part number SLM 20177. What this gauge is going to help you do is monitor the tread depth on the tires on your vehicle, trailer, motorcycle, anything like that. In order to know if it's time to replace them or not. On this tread depth gauge, we can see that as we push it up, we've got these different colors. What these colors are going to do, green is the safe range, yellow is letting you know that you're going to need to start planning to replace them soon, and red is you need to replace them as soon as you can because your tread depth is getting too low on your tires to safely grip the road. This tread depth gauge measures from 1/32 of an inch all the way up to 1 full inch. That's going to be good to give you that full range, so just about whatever type of tire you may have, you'll be able to measure it.

It has this nice little clip on it so if you've got someplace that you like to keep a record for your car, then you can just clip it right on there, and then whenever you want to check the tread depth on your tires, it's right there when you need it. Or, if you'd like, you can even clip it to your sun visor, or you can even keep it in your glove box. We're going to use this tire right here, in order to test it so we can see how it works. What we'll do is we'll have the little rod pushed all the way out, and then you want to put it into the larger channels on the tire. You make sure it's pushed all the way down, and then you can pick it back up and check it. We can see on this one, it's right about 3/32 of an inch.

We turn that around, we'll see that's just over 2 millimeters deep. You can also see that it's just down into the red area, letting you know that the tread on this tire is starting to get too low to be able to properly grip the road. Whenever we check the tread depth on a tire, you want to be sure to check all the way across in case they're wearing unevenly, because some spots can be lower than others. Out here on the outer edge of the tire, it was about 3/32 of an inch. Here more towards the center, we're still right about 3. Here on the inside edge, there we're starting to get down closer to 2.

The tread depth on this tire is definitely getting low. Then, here on the rear of the vehicle, we'll check the tires here. Here you can see it appears to be about 8/32. If we check towards the inside edge, still right about 8/32. In the middle is about 9/32. It looks like the rear tires on this vehicle are still in good shape.

When checking your tires, you always want to check all the tires on the vehicle, because some of them may wear differently than the others because of things like alignment. It's always a good idea to check all of them. It's nice that this gauge does give you the ability to see both the numbers for the actual depth and also give you the idea of what kind of condition it's in based on the color. You can also use it to check the tires on a motorcycle. Or you can even use it on a trailer. Or, if you've got a truck or SUV that's got oversize tires that are all terrains or mud terrains with the full inch that it gives you of measurement, you can even measure those without a problem. Now, after seeing how to use the Slime tread depth gauge, and how easy it is to use, you'll see that this is going to be much easier to use, and much more reliable than the old way of using a penny, because that penny will give you an approximate, but this tread depth gauge will be exact. That's going to complete our look at the Slime tire tread depth gauge, part number SLM 20177.

I found One here in our town but it did not have a color code like the one you have. The one you have tells me right away if my tires are good or not and it save me time to go look at some chart. Love the color code
