Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large, aftermarket tires - may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Diagonal Alloy Cable Snow Tire Chains Review

Colin: Hey, everyone. It's Colin here at etrailer 00:00:01, and today we're going to take a look at Titan Chains' line of diagonal cable snow tire chains. Now, these are going to be available for a wide variety. size tires. So just make sure you enter your year, make, model, and our website's fit guide, and then enter your tire size to lead you to the set that's going to best fit your tire. Usually, your tire size can be found around the perimeter of your tire.

For instance, on our truck right here, it is written right here, 275/55R20. First, makes sure you get all the information before you go online and look. Now, cable chains are going to be a really nice low profile set of chains you can throw on your tires, gives you a little bit extra traction through any lighter snow and ice so that you can stay on the road and stay safe out there. Now, these cable chains, like I said, low-profile, you're not going to really feel them too much while you're driving. It really prevents you from having to get one of those bigger sets of steel chains where you have these really big links across your tire, which could provide a rougher ride. You don't really want to have to use those for any lighter snow and ice.

So if you live in an area where you're not going to experience a ton of it, this is going to be a really great set for you. Now, on the flip side of that, if you live in an area where you're really getting a lot of snow and ice year round and it really piles up, you're probably going to want to invest in something a little bit more heavy duty, a little bit more durable. These cable chains we're really designed for use a couple of times a year just to give you a little bit extra traction. So if you're getting your chains out multiple times a week throughout the winter, go ahead and try and invest in a more durable set. Now, these cable chains are going to have a diagonal ladder pattern that's going to give you a much smoother ride, like I said. So you're not going to feel like you're driving over a lot of little speed bumps like you might feel when you're driving with a set of ladder pattern chains. You're not going to feel these near as much.

Now, we have a really rugged wire making our cross chains, and then we have these alloy steel rollers right here that are wrapped around the wire that help give you the traction you need through any of that lighter snow and ice.The chains do come with a set of rubber adjusters. You're going to have one for each cable tire chain. Now, these are something that you want to use every single time that you get your cable chains out because you're going to pull down on your chains. Make sure they stay snug against your tire to give you the tracking that you need. If, for some reason, you haven't to misplace one of these, or maybe it just happens to wear down over time and break, there is a replacement set you can get to make sure you can keep using your snow tire chains. Now, the chains are going to be SAE Class S certified, meaning they're going to be perfect for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance.

Obviously, we don't have that problem right now with our truck. But if you got a crossover SUV or a sedan where it's really tight under there, it's not a lot of space, these chains are going to be a lot easier for you to install and they're going to be more compatible with it. These chains are also going to meet Department of Transportation needs in all 50 States. The chains do have a speed rating of 30 miles per hour, so just make sure you're being safe out there. They do come in a quantity of two and they do come with this nice carrying bag which is going to make for very easy storage when they're not in use. One thing I do want to point out is that you want to make sure you're installing them on the correct side of your vehicle. So if you have a rear wheel drive vehicle like our truck, you want to make sure you install them on the back wheels. If you have a front wheel drive vehicle, make sure you install them on the front wheels. Now with that being said, if you have a vehicle where you have all wheel drive or four wheel drive and you want to have a set for both sets of tires, then go ahead and just use the same part number, as long as you have that same tire size on the front of the back. Now, when you first get your set of chains, I'd always recommend getting them out and just practicing using them, getting them installed a couple of times on your tire and taking them off, putting them back on. Get the feel for them so that when you find yourself in a situation where you're out in the elements and you need to put them on, you're going to know exactly what you're doing. So I'll walk you through that process right now. Now, first thing you want to do is lay out your cable chain flat and you want to make sure that everything's all right with it. There's no kinks or twists. There's no breaks in any of the wire links. Once you've seen that, what we're going to do is slide it behind our tire. And then we're going to mark this as a halfway point. So we're going to have this wire coming out of the backside of our tire and this side coming out of the front side. One thing I do want to point out is that you can see that this says tire side on the backside. Says it right here, as well. That's letting you know that this side of these brackets should be making contact with your tire. So it should be facing up when you install them. So what we're going to do is take the backside of each of our cables, bring it up behind, and then make that connection right there, just like that. And we'll let that sit behind our tire, and we'll grab ahold of our cable chains and drape it around the top and sides of our tire upfront. Go ahead and make our connection right there. Now, we'll head to the bottom and do the same thing. Now we're ready for our rubber tensioner. We're just going to hook that on. I'm going to grab the one across from it and go straight down. We'll go side to side on them. And just like that, it's going to get a little tight. That's okay. Want to make sure you install these right so that your cable chains stay snug against your tire. You also would probably want to go ahead and move it around, make sure that it's as even as possible around your cable chain. You can see our chains are very snug on our tire, so now we just need to repeat this process for the other side. Once you've got both sets installed, go ahead and drive forward a bit and then stop and get out and just double check. Make sure there's no adjustments needed to be made. From there, you're going to be ready to hit the road.Well, thank you all for watching. But that's going to do it for our look at Titan Chains line of alloy cable snow tire chains.

Although I may never use them, I now have a set of Cable Chains for my trailer that are required in many states. Excellent fit!

Bought two pairs of these for my enclosed trailer, as I believe in redundancy. I barely avoided a snow storm so I hadn't had to use them in action yet, but they are easy to install and seem to be quite solidly built.

Review from a similar V-Track Cable in Tire Chains

Haven't used tire cables yet … but … did install one to check the fit and look. And the thing fit perfectly on my 2019 F150 with 245/70r17 tires. Even look pretty good too! I especially like that the cables can be put on as the truck sets - no need to lay them out and back over them. And the carrying bag is nice - keeps everything together and able to be stored under a seat, in the bed, or wherever. I thought about getting chains with v-bars … but didn't think I needed anything that aggressive - so the tire cables ought to do just fine in deeper snow, packed snow and maybe even on ice.

Comments
Great accessory for winter driving! I had to use the cables while hunting in the western mountains of Maine in mid November- and they gave my F150 2WD the traction it needed to navigate some logging roads caked with snow and ice. Highly recommend them for on-road vehicles. And, was able to install them without moving the truck!

Review from a similar V-Track Cable in Tire Chains

These were mounted on a 2017 Fiat 500 Sport. Last February we drove from Quartzsite Arizona thru Santa Fe New Mexico to Denver, Boulder, and then spent 3 weeks in Aspen Colorado before heading west back to Quartzsite. In Aspen it snowed nearly every day and I put the chains on and removed the chains multiple times. By the third cycle I had the installation wired and could install them on the side of the road in a raging blizzard in less than 5-6 minutes - with gloves on. Great product that worked incredibly well. We could have never done the trip without them.

Review from a similar V-Track Cable in Tire Chains

etrailer went above and beyond, getting me my tire chains in only days, when I was expecting it to take a week or more. I got an email immediately letting me know, which was a nice personal touch. The research and purchase process on the website was smooth and fast. Regarding the chains themselves, I think they are OK for the job. I have non standard size tires (265 35/20) and very little clearance on an Audi A7. So it was difficult to find anything that fit. I had already returned a pair before I bought these. I bought these chains more just as an emergency option since I live around and travel in the mountains. But I hope to never have to put them on. It was a quite a finicky process doing it just at home in my garage, so would be much more difficult out in the snow and cold. But overall they do fit OK and seem like they will do the job in an emergency.

Used on 2018 Lincoln Navigator. Experienced with chains and winter driving. Took about 5-7 minutes per tire to install in driveway. Used once so far in real conditions, took about 15 minutes total for two tires. Performed well in compact snow and ice. Pretty smooth ride as far as chains go, but I only went max of 40mph. 4 stars because of dismount. To take off, you need to have the chain as close to the finished install position or it can get hung up behind the tire when you are taking it off. Since chains slip a little during driving and braking, this meant getting one side in position, taking it off, then moving the vehicle to get the other chain in the correct position. Definitely helps if you have two people for this. I would recommend this product.

The chains are the easiest snow chains to install. Smart design and it actually comes with a storage bag that you can get them back into. Haven't actually had to use then yet, so can't comment on their effectiveness or durability. 5 stars to etrailer.com for their customer service.

Estimated delivery came one day earlier then expected. This is my second set of cables for different vehicles. I would recommend highly this company for their assistance, installation videos and delivery. Follow-up was another great feature. Totally Satisfied customer.

Review from a similar V-Track Cable in Tire Chains

The etrailer.com site was easy to navigate and match cables to tire size. The one question I submitted by e-mail was answered promptly. Online purchase was easy. Cables arrived "free shipping" in two days in good condition. I'll have to wait for the first opportunity to see if I am smart and coordinated enough to mount the cables on the tires and assess the fit, and probably longer still to try them in the first snow deep enough to warrant their use.

Review from a similar V-Track Cable in Tire Chains

Used these a coupe of times going up to the mountains. They were pretty easy to put on and worked well. Only issue for me, I have steel wheels with hubcaps, the plastic clips on the rubber rings rubbed against the hubcaps and caused some discoloration. Not sure if that would be as issue on alloy wheels.

I appreciate the help customer service provided and the fast shipping but the product was a bad fit for my '17 vw gti, these cables/chains are too big for my 225 40 18 tires. Luckily I didn't need chains for my trip to lake Tahoe.

I bought these for my 2018 CR-V. They were quick and easy to install. There was plenty of clearance behind the wheels. Once I use them in the snow I’ll update my review, but I’m extremely pleased so far.

The product worked great, but after about 10 miles on a heavy snow packed road, one of the chain’s broke. Overall, very happy with the product but I bought four chains and only have three that are functional currently. The others held up well.

Turned my 2004 Mustang with aftermarket wheels and tires into a snow tank! Easy installation on 285/35/18 rear tires (bald Summer Street racing tires) and these tire cables will take me anywhere I want in the Montana winter!

Comments
I haven’t had to use my chains yet this winter, but after having them last year and saving me multiple times, I love the peice of mind these chains give me! DO NOT DRIVE OVER 30-45 with bad road conditions in your mustang. Keep it between 25-35 and you can get ANYWHERE with these chains. Luckily my daily commute is 2 miles each way, but they work very well. I noticed they rusted quickly but it just seemed like a surface rust. Using a towel to dry off isn’t enough, you must bring them inside to dry by the fire or they will rust in your trunk. The plastic clip felt cheap, but hasn’t broke yet. I wish they included metal clips but tese plastic ones work well. Rubber felt of good quality, and same with the chains! For about $50 I highly recommend this to every RWD car driver that must drive in snow.

I ordered these cable chains for my 2017 Subaru Forester after a poor experience with another national retailer. After ordering with etrailer, shipping was upgraded and the chains arrived in time for me to check out before heading into the mountains for some back country skiing. I haven't had to use these in adverse conditions; however, I know that if I need chains that I'm covered. Well done, etrailer.

The Titan Chain Diagonal Alloy Cable Snow Tire Chains fit my OEM tires as specifiied on eTrailer's web site. I called customer service today because my OEM tire size & the -1 tire size I plan to use for winter tires wasn't specified on the Titan Chain storage bag. About forty tire sizes were listed on the bag, so I called to be sure of the fitment for my tire sizes. The lady checked with their Titan liaison and said he assured her the chains would fit my tires; he told her that there wasn't enough room on the bag to list on the tire sizes the cable chains would fit. I later checked the fit of the cable chains on my OEM tires and they fit OK; the hardest part of mounting them was stretching the rubber tensioners. The construction of both the cable chains and carrying bag seem fine. We're having a relatively dry winter so far at Lake Tahoe, so I may not need to use them this season. If I do use them I'll update my review; four stars is as high as I'm comfortable with until I actually use them on snow or ice.

  • Recommended Tire Cables for 215/55-17 Size Tires on a 2014 Chevy Volt
Out of the cable chains that fit the 215/55-17 size tire on your 2014 Chevy Volt I recommend the Titan Chain part # TC335DC because it has a diagonal design which will give you better traction than a ladder version like part # PW1038. The recommended chains also include adjusters which ensure a snug fit. Attached is a review video for you to check out. Be sure to also look in your owner's manual for any specific instructions or restrictions about tire chains.
