How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)

Video Transcript for Pewag Brenta-C Square Link Tire Chains Review - 2017 Ford F-150

Today on our 2017 Ford F150, we're going to be test fitting the Pewag Brenta C 4x4 snow tire chains, part number PWXMR82V. We're going to be working with tire size 265/70R17 today. If these chains don't fit your particular tire size, double check the size, then go to our fit guide, and find the proper fit. Also, installing tire chains can be taxing on your hands, so we do recommend that you wear gloves while you install these. These tough, durable chains grip around your tire, nice and tight, thanks to the self-tensioning system, so you don't need any additional tensioners, and you don't have to worry about cam tensioners coming loose. Pretty much everything you need it right here. It does come in a diamond pattern, which has better tire coverage, and has these small wings that not only provide a smoother ride in inclement weather, but also provides superior traction in both snow and ice. And it's also easy to install, since everything is color coded.

Once everything is finished, you can place them in a convenient carrying case so you can have them in your vehicle ready for next time. Before I install these chains onto the tire, I went ahead and laid them out on the ground like you see here. This is to make sure we don't have any kinks in the lines, and we're ready to install them. Our next step, is going to take this end, put it behind the tire and make our connections behind the tire first. Reach around and pull our connections towards us here. This end stays over here, and vice versa with the other side.

Next, we'll take these two ends and connect them up at the center. They'll hook up like so, and we'll drape our chains over the tire. Making sure that the center of our diamond pattern is with the center of the tire. Also, hook up two yellow ends here, like so, while we do this. Let's take our end with the rubber tensioner, put it through that connection point there at the bottom, pull tight. Put it through connection point there.

Then hook it up like so, so it's nice and tight around the tire. Once you have it installed, I recommend you drive a short distance, double check, make sure the tension's working properly, and then you're good to go. There you have it for the Pewag Brenta C 4x4 snow tire chains on our 2017 Ford F150.

  • Recommended Tire Snow Chains for a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Driving in Moderate to Heavy Snow
  • I think adding snow chains are a nice addition, especially when you are heading skiing and potentially deep snow at times. But snow tires will be the superior option for snow. This is because snow tires dig down right through the snow to make contact with ground. I recommend the Pewag tire chains # PWE2228SC because of the square links. These provide excellent traction in snow, ice and mud. Just what your Jeep likes. These have a reversible design so you can wear on either side which...

  • Tire Chains for 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with 245/70/17 Sized Tires
  • For your 2003 Dodge Ram 2500, we actually have several options for tire chains depending on if you have a dually or single rear wheels. I recommend the Pewag Tire Chains, # PWE2214S. This set of tire chains features reversible square links for good grip and reliable wear. If you are looking for something that you can manually tighten, try # PWE2214SC. The only difference between these two sets is that the SC model comes with side cams you would use to tighten the chains. The first set are...

  • How to Determine if the Tires are Different or Snow Tire Chains are Different for 265/75R16 Tires
  • It sounds like you are covering most of the bases here. If all of the tires on your truck are 265/75R16 tires and the chains have the same number of side links and cross links and the side and cross links are the same size, then the only other things that could be an issue are proper inflation of the tires, the tire brand or manufacture date being different. Check the inflation of your tires, and the brand and model of the tires first and if these check out. If so, check the manufacture...

  • Do Pewag Brenta-C 4X4 Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains, # PWXMR82V Fit a Radial Tire
  • Yes, the Pewag Brenta-C 4X4 Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains, # PWXMR82V, will fit a radial tire. The sizes leave out letter codes so that it indicates just the size since they are not limited to radial, bias ply, and other types. I checked the owner's manual for your 2016 Jeep Wranger Unlimited and it does state that it is recommended to use chains that have a Class S specification.
