Pewag Servo RS Installation Instructions

How to Install Pewag Servo RS Snow Chains

  1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.
  2. Connect the cable on the back side of the tire.
  3. Pull the chain over the top and around to the front of the tire. Connect the servo device to the inner, tensioning chain with the top-mounted, dual hook.
  4. Fit the chain around the tire, making sure that the servo is in the front.
  5. Connect the inner chain to the outer traction chain at the bottom of the tire using the large red hook.
  6. Activate the servo device to ratchet the chain tightly into place.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require the use of Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Installation - 2019 Hyundai Elantra

Today we have 2019 Hyundai Elantra, and we're going to do a test fit of Pewag's Servo RS self tensioning snow tire chains. These chains are pretty awesome to use as a tool to get yourself out of any sticky situations. It's always a good idea to keep chains in your car. What sets these apart, is they're very easy to install. You don't have to get behind your tire to make any connections. It's all going to be at the front, and it's going to be very easy to do.The chains are going to have a diamond pattern, which gives you more coverage around the tire when compared to a traditional ladder pattern, which is, in turn, going to give you more traction.

We also do have these square links that are making our cross chains. The square links that we're going dig in the snow and ice and just give you that bite you need. All of the hooks are going to have these nice plastic covers to help protect your tire and your wheel from any damage caused by the links. These chains are also going to be self tensioning, meaning you don't have to purchase any type of rubber adjuster to make sure this stays snug. Self tensioning system right here is going to make sure that they stay tight against your tire during the duration of their use.The chains do have a maximum speed rating of 40 miles per hour, and they are SAE class 'S' rated, so good for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance, like our Elantra. They do come in a set of two, with this nice carrying case is going to make for easy storage. Now, we've gone over some of those features, we'll show you how they install. The first thing you want to do is just lay out your chains flat, and then make sure there's no broken links or any other damage, and then any twists or kinks, you want to make sure you get those out as well.

Once you've gone over and just done all your checks, we're going to slide them behind our tire, making this the halfway point. So we're going to want this side with the red hook to come out from the front. So you see all the around, I've got a red hook sitting right here. Now, what we're going to do is grab both sides of the cable, and then we're pulling it out behind our tire and connect it. Then just slide that behind your tire. From there, keeping hold of your chain, just start to drag it out from behind.

You get it draped over the top inside of your tire. Now with the front, we're going to grab this gray hook right here, and our set of gray links, we're going to connect it. Just a little tight, just like that. Now we're going to come up here, we need to set this tab right here. We see the red tab, we have two sides, 'drive' and 'open'. We need to open it up and pull out some slack.

We're going to take this connector right here, bring it all the way over and connect it to this red hook. We're going to need a bit more slack, so it's . pull a little bit more. And make that connection, like so. Then we're going to flip this switch down to 'drive' and it's going to suck up and take a lot of slack out, like so. Go ahead and give it a couple of tugs, just so you can get all the slack out. See, it keeps slipping in. Now it can't come back out.and just repeat this process for your other chain. Then once you've got both of them installed, you're going to drive forward a bit, and stop and get out and make any adjustments if you need to.Well, all being said, that's going to do it for our test fit of Pewag's RS self tensioning snow tire chains on our 2019 Hyundai Elantra.

Received the tire chains today. No adverse driving conditions to test them on. Will put them on tires this weekend - to check for fit and to practice installation instead of when they are needed. 594457

The chains were a great fit. It took a little while to figure it out, because I forgot to disconnect both the top and bottom portion of the chains before putting it on. 583240

The little clips can get tangly, and the main clasp can be a pain sometimes to get it to stay clasped untill you get tension on it. But overall I have used them quite a few times and they work great. I would def recommend them over the traditional types. 468340

Outstanding product! Very well-designed tire chain, quality components, easy to install, and terrific grip. I researched this purchase from some time and paid a little more for this quality product. We live in an area with very steep hills and quite a bit of snow and ice that goes unmanaged by the city. I figured these chains would be easy to install (I didn't look a the instructions before I took them out to put them on and had them on in 11 minutes), last a long time, not cause damage to my Lexus SUV, and provide excellent traction. They meet all my expectations. 469494

The package came on time as you said it would! The directions were pictures with little text in a vinyl/plastic insert that fits nicely in the case. Watching the video helped a lot, should have looked at first before I installed one. I did it right but the video made it faster the second time! The case is compact and has a rigid separator plate that keeps the two chains separate. The service on the telephone was superb rate it a 10. This was reassuring since their are so many choices. The chains fit like a glove and now I hope I never need them! 344682

These are great quick and easy to install and don't require a roll over. Installed them at 0010 with a headlamp on a steep icy hill after sliding 75ft without them. 466930

Review from a similar Pewag Servo RS in Tire Chains

I have never been more pleased with a purchase decision than I am with these snow chains. They fit my car perfectly and were easier to install than I expected. If you have ever used on-ground cable chains, you know there are three connections that must be made, plus any adjustments to the tension device. With these chains, the connections are easy and the self-tightening tension device is impressive. At first I was not interested in this feature, but after using it I can appreciate how it will keep the chains tight and secure. I was also impressed by the design of the carrying case. I expected it would be difficult to replace the chains in the case once removed. Wrong. They easily fit back into the handy plastic case. Further, the chains came with plastic gloves to slip over your your hands (even with winter gloves) to keep your hands and lower arms clean. It's a bit odd to be so excited about a product that I hope NOT to use. But I drive to ski resorts all over the West and encounter chain restrictions often. Although I have all-wheel drive, I don't have snow tires and recent chain restrictions in Mammoth, CA require chains or 4-WD with snow tires on all wheels. Now, I'm actually looking forward to using the chains. I'm so pleased, I may purchase a second set for my wife's car. Finally, etrailer.com was great too work with. Their rep ( thanks Donna!) helped me find the right size chains for my wheels. Thanks so much! 335643

Their customer service is awesome!! They reached out to me via email as soon as they noticed delay and kept me updated on the delivery status, and also followed up after the delivery. We now have the chains we need for winter weather! We are very pleased to finally find the right snow chain for our tire size after looking around for 2 years! • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
  • Snow tires are a great option for a vehicle that will be in a climate that will see a lot of snow. And then having chains as a back up for when things get really bad is an excellent idea. First thing you will need to do is check the owners manual of the vehicle to determine if there are any snow chain restrictions. Next you will need to determine what size tires you will be putting on the vehicle so that you can pick out the correct chains to fit them. If you go with one of the standard...
