How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)

Video Transcript for Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains for Wide Base Tires Review

Today we're going to review part number PWE3229SC. This is the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tensioners. All right, let's go ahead and take a quick look at our snow chains here. We already have them mounted on the tire so it makes them a little easier to see. First off, we take a good look at them, these are really big gnarly chains so you know it's going to last. These are designed for a wide based tire such as we have here, and also a lot of dually applications as well.

They are constructed from a nickel manganese alloy and the steel construction makes it durable, and it's also going to be rust resistant. Now, the shape of the link is a square link. You can see the corner right on the edge, and here all the way around. This will dig into the snow and ice and give you lots of traction. Now the style of this snow chain is what's called a cross chain. These offer about thirty-two percent more traction than comparable models.

Let's go ahead and see how it fits on the tire. First off you see these devices right here These are the cam tensioners so when you initially put the chain on the tire it's going to be a loose fit. You take up the slack with these tensioners. Right now we have it under tension, and it comes with an included tool to apply the tension to them or to release them. Let's go ahead and release this one, and it's loosened up.

You have one, two, three of these guys on the chain. First thing you need to know is to go ahead and practice with them before you actually need them. Go ahead and lay out the chains flat on the ground and look for a couple of things. You want to make sure we have the tangles all out of the chain, make sure nothing is twisted, make sure it's all loose, and that when we put it on the tire this link right here, for the crossbar, and this surface right here always ride against the tire, and these hook ends right here, they always point away from the tire. Also, you want to make sure you have the tensioners on the outside of the tire as you put them on. Make sure you have your tensioner tool handy.

Typically you're going to drape them over the tire and kind of stretch them out as much as you can and make sure that it's even across the top. Another thing would be to go ahead and take the ends of the chains and tuck them underneath the tire. Not much to it, just push them underneath there. At this point you can roll the car forward or backward, whichever is easier, to get access to the links on the inside of the tire. In this case we're going to roll it forward. Once you get access behind the wheel go ahead and hook the links together, and you want to go as far up as possible as you can. We do have some excess. There's a couple ways of dealing with it. You can put the two over together like this to help take up the extra slack. You could remove links or you could even secure them with some zip ties. Also, you want to double check that your extra links won't strike anything on the inside of your wheel. Now, on the outside here we actually used . we we're one link lower than the first one. That's okay. As long as we're within one link of each side we're good to go. At this point it's a simple matter of using our tensioners to tighten up the chain. We actually have them both installed. Drive a very short distance and re-inspect and make sure they're on the tire correctly. You may have to adjust the links on them to tighten them up, other than that you should be good to go. With that that'll finish it for our review of part number PWE3229SC, the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains. .

2009 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty

These are by far the BEST tire chains I've ever owned. These are for plowing in Maine winter, and these chains are massive! Talk about high quality and super heavy duty! I put them on with ease. Fitment is perfect. If you want the best chains on the market, get pewag. The camlock tool is equally heavy duty, big & strong. I'm very happy with these awesome chains. Nothing's indestructible, but these certainly feel like it. 580917

These are top quality chains. They are made of alloy rather than low carbon steel; which can break when you most need them, and even damage your rig. Do yourself a favor, and invest in good quality USA made chain. Think about it. If you need chains, you are already in a bad situation to begin with. Spend the extra money to buy real chains. It's worth it. The square link works very good on ice and snow, and also works great as mud chains for outdoorsman who spend time in the wilderness. 457816

Ordered chains on a Fri afternoon (Pacific Time) and was a little concerned about delivery before my trip the following Thu. Pleasantly surprised to receive a response later that Friday evening that order was processed and already on its way. Chains arrived the following Tuesday with standard shipping. Didn't end up needing to use chains on my trip to Mammoth but glad I have them and the order processing by etrailer was excellent. 472311

All I can tell you is that they're heavy. I purchased them "just in case" and didn't need them last year. Hopefully, I won't ever need them. Heck; I don't even know if they actually fit, I never even tried them on. 454969

Normally don’t write reviews like this, but making an exception in this case. I ordered this set of Pewag chains on a Sunday evening and had them in my possession the following Wednesday morning. The quality of the chains are excellent, but the quality of the service I received was exceptional! I cannot remember the last time I received customer service like this? I received a personal phone call regarding my order and emails updating me of its progress. Even received an email after delivery making sure I was happy! Makes me want to complete another purchase! THANK YOU!!! 473967

These bad boys eat through snow like a sumo wrestler at a buffet table.... They bite into ice and snow like a grizzly feasting on salmon. Definitely take the time to learn to put these on and actually put them on before you need them!! Helpful online videos if this is your first prom dance... 328997

Nice Chains---The chains we received were for a light truck. The tires we have are P215 70R15 and the chains do not fit. We need 2 more links to make them even come close to closing. We have the truck in the garage in ideal conditions--but if we were out on the road---this is impossible. Sent an e-mail to e-trailers and waiting for a response. Also, 2 of the side links have been put on backwards from the factory. 111395

I double checked the Pewag fit guide and your tire size calls for this chain. We will be in touch to request photos of the backwards links and follow up with you about getting you properly fitting chains.

Review from a similar Pewag All Square with Cam in Tire Chains

Am glad to have these chains just in case and for the trips through the mountains :) They are very high quality, Pewag is the best for chains, whether for snow tire or security.. I bought a cheaper set (A different brand) a few years back from one of your local auto parts stores, one of the links broke the first day I used it, very low quality.. Sometimes it is a bummer upfront paying the higher cost for quality, but in the long run it is always worth it.. These Pewag chains can not be beat.. You can tell they built these to last, very strong and durable. The old chains I had might as well have been mesh wire compared to these bad boys.. Plus before I ordered I looked up the Versatility so these chains fit my 4runner now and they should fit my dream Land Cruiser that I am hoping to buy in a few years. I am always very impressed with ordering from Etrailer.. They are always very helpful, professional and seem to actually care about their customers; which many businesses seem to not anymore.. They ship quickly and I always seem to get what I ordered faster than I think it will take. Prices are very reasonable, People are great to work with. The way they run their business is the way it should be ran. I am very happy with this company and am glad to buy products from them, I always love helping supporting companies that do such a wonderful job at what they specialize in! You guys should carry the Pewag security chain as well. Thanks again! 327978

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie. 461390

Haven't used on the road yet, since luckily I didn't encounter snow/ice on my recent drive... but did try on. Their etrailer web site clearly specified what size of tires the chains fit and the details of the specific chain models, like type U. The Sprinter manual specified type U chains. Delivery was per their commitment. Fit is good and triple cam method seems that it will work well to keep the chains snug on the tires. The only thing that seems that could be improved, is the cams are tightened and loosened with a supplied L shaped tool. If this was a T shaped tool, this would allow better leverage to be applied to the cams. Thanks 580195

Review from a similar Pewag All Square with Cam in Tire Chains

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains. 329168
