Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

The quality of these are very good. The instructions coupled with the video on etrailer.com make them very easy to install. You will want to be careful driving with these installed and keep your speed low.

Have not had a chance to use these, but the ordering and shipping went flawlessly. Very quick and reasonably priced. Kept me in the loop the whole way from order to delivery. Well Done! Will be a customer again!

Review from a similar V-Trac in Tire Chains

Used these tire chains only once to exit a snow-covered gravel camp road for less than one mile. They provided some additional traction, but were insufficient to help navigate a steep grade. (I needed a tow for that section of road). After returning home a few days later, the chains had already begun to rust, and several of the traction parts had twisted together during use, making them difficult to get apart and reset to original position. The vinyl carrying bag the product comes in had already started to fall apart. See attached photos.

Have done a practice of putting on my cable chains in nice weather. At first it was a struggle but with the second tire it went smoother as I was used to how the assembly worked. Finished work was a very nice and snug fit. Really nice workmanship! These are going to be perfect for when the weather gets bad. Thanks!

Review from a similar V-Trac in Tire Chains

I purchased the Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains PW2114V. The order was delivered quickly and the shipping was free. I have a 2015 Ram with P275 60 R20 tires. There are not many styles that fit the tire. I read a review where the purchaser said they did not fit. The cables are a very tight fit and take a little extra finessing, but they do fit. I am very happy with the product.

Comments
Is your 2015 Ram a 1500, and have you used the chains without incident? My concern is the close proximity of the rear brake hose to the inside of the rear wheel.

Comments
I have a 2012 Dodge Ram with the same tire size. I am looking to get a set of snow chains and wanted to see if you used yours and how it was? I keep seeing you cant put chains on the rear tires due to the break line. Did you run into this?Thank you

Great customer service. Product as described (tire chains); won't use until needed, but do not anticipate any problems.

Comments
FYI when I went to use I discovered they were defective and would not work. I contacted your customer service and after several discussions I was able to return for a full refund. I was disappointed they did not work. Your customer service is very efficient and effective.

The chains were delivered quickly. I can't give a review because we never needed to use them. They haven't even been out of the bag they came in. Now we don't have the same vehicle so we can't se them on the new one since the tires are different. We had to get more chains for the new car. I wish you had a deal where you could send back unused chains a year later for a different size.

I love these cables. Worked very well. Easy to put on. Good quality. Worth the money. I trust myself when driving in the snow or over ice when these cables are on my tires. Good brand.

Purchase went smoothly. Fast shipping. I have not used the cable snow chains yet, but I did put them on my car to make sure they fit. It takes a few minutes to put the clips on the rubber tension ring. It is best to do this before you need them. Directions with the chains are in small print and not very helpful. Look at the etrailer tutorial video on their web-site - very helpful.

The chains were to small to fit the tires of my truck. Patrick O handled the problem quickly and to my satisfaction. Thanks for the great service.

Chains broke after 2 days of usage. Etrailer basically told me to ask the manufacturer to fix it. They were not interested in replacing the broken chain. Will not buy from Etrailer again. Since they don’t stand behind what they sell.

Delivered on time. I have used these chains before and find that they are just fine until the snow gets over a foot deep, which at that point very little helps anyway.

Cable Chains Thank you once more. The cable chains look like they are worth the wait. I thank you for immediately informing me that they were out of stock and your offering of another type. I haven't an opportunity to use them just yet, but the installation looks easy and I expect them to be successful when needed. I got these to assist in the upper mountain conditions, when four wheel drive needs additional help! I may even get another set for the front of my vehicle if I feel they are needed! Again, it is a pleasure dealing with superior people and real business that cares!

Good test fit on vehicle, but haven't had a chance to try on snow/ice. Manufacturer's directions are a little hard to follow. Recommend watching etrailer.com's online reviews of product, as they demonstrate installation techniques.

I live in Hot Springs AR?, we still have not had heavy snow or any ice storms. I bought them because I had a terrible experience in Texas. The chains look fine, and they should work well too.

  • Snow Chains Recommendations for Tire Size 245/50-18 on a 2011 BMW X3
The only snow chains we have available, at this time, for the 245/50-18 tire size are the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, item # PW1042, and the Glacier Square-Link Snow Tire Chains, item # PWPLC1144. I checked with our supplier and they stated that if you want the best traction the Square-Link Chain is the best option to go with and would even be better than the Glacier V-Trac Cable Chains, item # PW1942V, that you referenced.

  • Can I Leave My Snow Chains On All Winter?
The thing about snow chains and cables like the Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chain # PW1942V is that they're really not designed to be used for anything except providing traction on snow and the more you use them, the quicker they're going to break down. Using them on roads that aren't snow covered are going to make them deteriorate much quicker. You're also limited to driving no faster than 30-35 mph when the chains are on, so you're really going to be limited in the driving that you...

  • Can I Leave My Snow Tire Chains On Overnight?
While ideally you should take them off whenever you are not using them, keeping them on overnight especially if the parking area still has ice/snow in the morning is fine. Now this will also depend on the tire chains you have on. The Glacier V-Trac Cable Chains # PW1942V you're asking about are more likely to wear faster since the cable design, while low profile, is also not as heavy duty. I do recommend at least taking off the rubber tensioners if you're leaving your vehicle parked overnight. We...

  • Are Snow Tire Chains And Cables Compatible With Radial Tires
The Glacier V-Trac Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW1942V, are compatible with radial tires. Snow chains or cables may cause cosmetic scuffing of tires when installed. This condition is unavoidable with certain tread types and designs. By design, most standard snow tire chains or cables must hang down (drape) the side wall of the tire in order to stay on the tire while being used. As a result, radial tires may also experience some minor scuffing of the tire side wall as a result of the...

  • Should Snow Chains be Removed When Driving on Dry Pavement
With snow chains and cables you would want to take them off whenever they aren't needed for a couple reasons. First, they would wear out very quickly this way. Especially since they would be used on dry pavement. And secondly because with snow chains you shouldn't drive faster than 30-35 miles per hour. I attached a couple snow chain FAQ articles to the right for you to check out as well.

  • Snow Cable/Chains Recommendations for a 2005 Mercedes S55 with 265/40R18 Tires
The first thing you need to do is check the owners manual of your Mercedes S55 2005 to determine if there are any restrictions on snow chain/cable usage. While the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1042 you referenced are confirmed to fit your tire size I think you would be better served to go with the # PW1942V as this cable set will install easier and will provide you with better traction while steering due to the way the cables are angled. What I think would be your best overall...
