Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large, aftermarket tires - may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

Installation Step 1

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the side chain with the lever is on the outside. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

Installation Step 2

2. Reach around behind the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together.

Installation Step 3

3. Move back to the front of the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together using the built-in lever.

Installation Step 4

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2014 Jeep Compass

I just got it, but I appreciate the tacklebox that the chains came with! Very convenient. The instruction is laminated which makes it waterproof! Very good condition. I still have yet trying to use them. This is my skiing year so I’m hoping to use these chains a lot.

Good basic tire chain

i put these on a small skid steer. 27/10.5/15 tire that chains would be to long , but i had to add 3 links , work fine now . thank you

2010 Toyota Camry

I have an ‘07 toyota camry tire size 215/60/16 and was able to install the chains on both of the drive tires in less than 7 mins by myself. I could've bought snow cables but based on my research, the camry is not low profile, plus the snow chains have more “bite” traction vs the cables! Etrailer is my go to place for auto accessories!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
Id give a 10 star, but 5 star was the max, extremely pleased with my experience with the purchase.

The chain snapped after first use,

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Haven't had to use the tire chains I bought yet. The only problem I had when I got the order was the plastic container that the trailer chains were in was broken.
Hope to use them soon.
Thank you for asking,

I have been happy with the use of this product. It fits right with the extra purchased suspenders. Only had to use them once but it was a good use. I pulled these out a few days ago looked them over and I was happy there wasn't any evidence of rust or serious flaw. After a year --I can honestly say that these chains did the job. I never review a product quickly unless I get a decent amount of use but after a year these are still like new. Sometimes chains go bad after one use, these did not, they are still good to go if needed.

Sorry this is not a product review, as we haven't had snow since I got the chains. But it is comforting to know they are in my trunk. I did want to say that I had excellent experience with etrailer. The communication and support was stellar, and the product arrived very well packed on the day that was quoted.

2009 Suzuki SX4

I have not actually had the opportunity to put on and use my new snow chains yet. But, I am happy with the shipping process, although they had arrived one day later than the date that was suggested by UPS. I'm sure that my snow chains will work just fine when I need to use them for the first time. No ice on our local area roads right now...

Planning on a trip very soon. I found that I should have snow chains for our safety. I checked and not ony found what I need, but at a very good price. I ordered and hoped it would arrive in time. Low and behold, not only was it a quick delivery, but was way faster than I thought it would take. has never let me down anytime I have needed them. I highly recommend them.

Bought these as a safety “just in case we are going to travel for Christmas and will be traveling where there will be snow. So just knowing we have them will be a relief.

I gave you three stars for now the product looks good it looks clean now just got to wait for the snow and ice to come and I'll give you five stars once I find out how well the product holds

Haven't used them yet

As advertised. Thanks!

Worked well

Nice quality

I have not use those tire changes yet but when winter Falls here in Kansas I will use them and let you know how they did.

Loved the product... I have not had to use it as of yet... but excellent quality and they fit my tires correctly.

They fit well and were easy to install. The instructions were easy to follow. A good value.

Exactly what I was expecting. Each set of chains even has it's own storage box.

1998 Chevrolet Astro

Couldn't find these chairs in CALIFORNIA
Luckily i came across this website with exactly what I wanted and at the right price. The sales representative was very helpful and polite.
I needed these chairs in three days got them in two. Thanks

Chains seem to be durable, service was very quick and efficient.

Easy to put on and works great on my 1979 Jeep cj7

They work as advertised, not the simplest chains but they'll do.

  • How Fast Can you Go with Tire Chains Installed
With the Titan Chains like the # TC1138 installed we typically recommend a speed rating of between 30-35 miles per hour as the maximum speed. There are no chains that will allow you to travel faster than that. Also, if you are in snowy enough conditions to call for chains you probably shouldn't be going faster than 30-35 MPH even with the extra traction that chains provide.

  • How Many Chains are Included in a Set of Tire Chains for my 2015 Nissan Altima
Yes it means a pair or 2 tire chains. Like with the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains part # TC1138, which is designed to fit two (215/60-16 and 215/55-17) of the three tires sizes available on your 2015 Nissan Altima, you will have two chains for the front drive axle. I have linked our page where you select your tire size to see what chains we have available for your particular tire size.

The Glacier Chain # TC1138 chains you referenced are indeed a fit for the stock size 225/40-18 tires on your 2013 VW GTI. These chains meet the qualifications for Class S status, which means the chains extend no further above or to the inside of the tire than 15mm. Before purchasing or installing chains, you'll want to consult your owner's manual and abide by any advice or prohibitions VW offers regarding tire chain usage. I'll link you to our Tire Chain FAQ article.

Yes we can help you get setup with tire chains for both vehicles but the sizes of the tires are different enough that one set isn't going to fit both. For the 245/40R18 the # TC1138 that you referenced is a fit and would work well. For a similar set that fits the 255/60R17 we have the part # TC3010 which is a confirmed fit. Be sure to check the owners manual of both vehicles to determine if there are any tire chain restrictions.

For your 2017 Chevy Volt with narrow clearance I recommend the Titan Chains # TC1138 chains which are S-Class qualified for low profile fits. If you just need them for show or rare emergency these will do. If you expect have to install chains several times per season, I would recommend the Thule # TH04115095 chains which install with minimal effort and are self adjusting as you drive. Includes wheel rim protection.

If you have the 215/75-15 size tires on your 1998 Chevrolet Astro then I recommend using the Pewag Snox Pro Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWSXP570 because they are easy to install and feature square links in a diamond pattern for great traction. For a more cost-effective option I recommend the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC1138 which uses twist links in a ladder pattern. For your 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon with tires sized 225/55-17 you can use the Titan Chains # TC1138 ladder pattern using twist links chain. These will give you the best grip and still be Class-S compatible low-profile chains. I also recommend using the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters # PW105 to help keep the chains snug on your tires and to reduce the chance that your rims become damaged. • Are Tensioners Recommended For Titan Tire Chains
We sure do. The tensioners will help keep the chains tight to the tire and centered. They're pretty inexpensive and easy to used, so there's really no good reason not to use them. For the # TC1138 Twist Link chains, I'd recommend using the # TCMA2 tensioners which fit 14-24 inch rims. The owner's manual for your 2006 Toyota Sienna recommends class S chains like the # TC1138, and goes on to recommend they be installed on the front wheels only. I've linked to product videos for the chains...

  • Are the Rubber Tensioners Required with the Glacier Chains part # PWH2465S
Rubber adjusters # PW100 aren't always needed on snow chains like the part # TC1138. It just depends on how tight of a fit the chains end up being and whether or not you want to make the tightening of the chains a little bit easier. For the price I would say just go ahead and grab them as they will make the chains fit better and will make tensioning the chains a little easier. I attached an FAQ article on snow chains for you to check out as well.

An M+S rated tire is not any larger in diameter than a standard tire, the difference lies in the extra cuts or sipes incorporated into the tread design itself.
