Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier Square-Link Snow Tire Chains Review - 2015 Volkswagen Golf

All right. Today on this 2015 Volkswagen GTI, we're going to install part number PWPLC1138. This is a glacier square length snow tire chains. All right. Now, we have one of the chains installed already on the passenger side of our vehicle. We're going to take a look and see how it fits on the tire. First off, how they're supposed to fit is that you see the two little hooks right here.

They should always face towards the ice and snow. The smooth spot on the bottom should rest against your tire. We'll take a look at the whole assembly here at the crossbar. You see it has the square-shaped links built into the chain. These square little edges on the link will help dig into the ice and snow. Okay.

Looking towards the bottom here is this link that will attach the two ends together. This is, of course, on the outside. This has a little lever to provide some tension, and a little link that helps hold it in place. That's what it looks like when it's on the tire. We'll go ahead and show you how it installs on the driver side. All right.

Let's go ahead and put it into place. Try and keep it as even as possible lengthwise towards the bottom of the tire. Make sure your crossbars are even across the tire. Then all we have to do is take the ends. Make sure they're not tangled.

We'll tuck them underneath the tire as far as we can. Do it on both sides. Before we make our connection on the inside of a tire, it's a good idea to drive the car forward or backwards. Whichever way makes it easier to get access to the hook on the inside edge of the tire. Okay. All right. We'll go ahead and make sure we take up as much slack as we can. Maybe pull the chain across the tire and towards the bottom. We'll go ahead and make our first connection. We'll try to take up as much slack as possible. We don't have to stretch it, but try to get as much as we can. We'll go ahead and hook up on the inside. Okay. Let's take a note of how many links that you used. We're on the fourth link. We want to do the same thing on the outside, or one more or less. Whichever works better. Now, those extra links on the inside on a smaller tire sizes you'll have a few of these. It may be a good idea to keep some zip ties around. Just to help zip tie it back to itself to keep it from flying around any more than it has to. We're on the fourth one on the inside. We'll probably end up using the fifth one on the outside. Through our link on the one we're going to use. Then we'll take the rest of the link on this side, push it back on top, keep it out of the way, and then fold it back down. Then slip it into the free link that holds it in place. Okay. At this point, we've got our snow chains on our tire. It's a good idea to go ahead and drive it a short distance and double check it. See if you could take up anymore slack on the chains. Okay. Now, in certain situations in those smaller tire sizes that this chains will fit, you may need some extra help with some rubber adjusters. We're going to use part number PW105. This is a glacier multi-armed rubber adjusters. Work on 15 inch to 18 inch rims. All right. This is a simple device with six points of contact. Use to hook it to your chain and make sure your hook stays away from your tire. Okay. Let's go ahead and hook them up as even as possible. Doesn't have to be really precise. We take a look at the point here you can see how it actually pulls on the chains more and give me a tire grip onto the tire. Once you have your chains fully installed, it's always a good idea to go ahead and run your hand over the top of the tire if you can. Feel to make sure you can run your finger between any components between the tire and wheel. Make sure there's nothing in the way. Now when you get your snow chains, it's always a good idea to go ahead and do a couple of practice runs like we did here before you actually need them in the ice and snow. That'll finish it for our glacier square length snow tire chains. Part number PWPLC1138 on our 2015 Volkswagen GTI. .

I have not tried these in the snow yet but they were pretty easy to install. These chains have a more aggressive chain that the other model that I was looking at (PW1042) so they will probably provide better traction but also offer a more bumpy ride. These chains are probably more suitable for terrain where there is hard packed snow that will prevent the chains from making direct contact with the road. The case that comes with the chains is decent and the instructions are helpful. I also got the rubber chain tensioners (PW105) and am glad that I did. 236782

The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that it snowed while my product was shipping, but my item was shipped quicker than expected 10/10 would recommend. 461583

Arrived quickly, the helpful etrailer video gave excellent installation instructions. Had them in the trunk of my 2011 Hyundai Sonata for two months before I needed them to get home in a Colorado snow storm. My Michelin X-ICE x13 snow tires got me up to about 7,000' on my commute, but the five inches of snow stopped me. Pulled over and installed the chains (took several attempts in the driving snow, dark night time conditions); once they were on, the Sonata carved through the 5+ inches like an ice breaker. Ascended the remaining 1,200 feet to my home in the remaining 2.5 miles without hesitation or slippage. Great product, highly recommend it. They give me confidence and assurance that I can get home in my low profile, front wheel drive Sonata in 5 to 7 inches of snow. 324607

Haven't installed them yet - but I really appreciate how etrailer.com steers you right to the product that will fit your vehicle. Most automotive parts web-sites just have a vague idea of what will work, but I liked how the rep at etrailer looked up my vehicle information to make sure the chains would fit clearance/tolerance. 734336

I purchased these and have not used them yet but they seem like they are made well, I watched the video and tried installing them and they were very easy to install on my Sonata, I also purchased the rubber adjusters which I recommend, they take up any slack and give chains a better fit. Am happy once again with my purchase from etrailer. Thanks 464934

These chains are durable and strong. I love how easy it is for these to be assembled. I had the horrible experience of getting caught in the middle of the road in last year's March blizzard and it won't happen ever again. These made all the difference getting in and out of pockets of deep snow. Money well spent. My only concern would be it's easy to get these tangled, so I find it best to tie them after being used. 307392

I ordered three sets of chains. One for my van, one for my small truck and one for my big truck. The chains with the cams are very nice and easier to deal with. Don't buy the rubber rings with hooks that is used to keep the chain centered, it is cheap and will not last the winter. Buy the short rubber straps at any hardware, they work perfectly. These are adequate chains for moderate use. 293908

Rating product as "good" because I havent had an occasion to use them. I don't see anywhere to rate the service, but I found it to be excellent! The staff assisted me in the selection of the chains and delivered them as promised. The day after receiving them, I was back on the road to California via Colorado. Plenty of snow on the ground but didn't need the chains. Thanks everyone! 154408
