How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier Tire Chains Review - 1995 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 1995 Jeep Wrangler, we're going to be doing a test fit on the Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains, part number is PWH2816SC. We're using tire size 215 75 R15, and as you can see we've got the chain laid out here in front of us. This is just kind of, to help us check, make sure we don't have any twists or any kinks that we're going to need to work out of there before we place it up on the tire. The V-Bar Chain gets it's name from, basically a standard twist link chain. Then it's got welded on each of the links, a V-Bar, exceptional traction in both ice and snow. It's a real severe duty kind of chain, really nice, got a hardened steel finish to it. It's a good long lasting chain.

Now to begin the test fit here, we're just going grab our chain and place it up over our tire. Look here you'll notice we've got the hooks facing outward, the hooks are facing away from our tire we've got that nice flat spot there on the inside. Just kind of adjust our chain, it's a ladder style chain, so that means it's almost got like rungs, or it's got what they call cross chains going across it. We want to get the first of those ladder rungs if you will, or cross chains just in front of our tire. Allow that next one to kind of spread out, our goal is going to be, I'm going to put the Jeep in neutral and push it forward. We want to see that we have our Jeep's tire in the second gap here. Let's kind of pull some of the slack up to try to aid in that.

There we go, all right, Let's roll it forward, I'm going to try to stop it right there, kind of the top. All right, about right there should be good. Now you will notice here we've got our two extension ends or our tag ends. There's going to be one, two, three, four, five, six links for us to choose from. We're going to gather up our chain, bring it up here and connect it on the smallest link that we can, the closest link in there that we can. In this case we did get it on the sixth one.

Bring our other side around to the front, now we need to go either the sixth link or the fifth link here. There's a plus or minus one, so let's say just for instance we had used the fifth, we could go to the sixth, we could use the fifth or we could use the fourth. Which ever one we can get it in there, we'll try to get it in that sixth one. There we go, it might give us some trouble when it comes time to tension it down with our tensioners because it's pretty taught as it is, we'll see. Yeah, let's go with the fifth one there. When I do that, I like to kind of bring our extra links up to where it's a nice smooth bottom circle there in our link.

Bring it down and then on our lever that we use to kind of cam that down, there's a spare link here. That will get positioned right on it, as you can see there. We'll now bring in our tensioning tool, go around to each of our cams and just bring it around until we get it tight. All right last one here, helps if you go the right way with it. Now, you will see we've got extra links here on the front side and on the back side here. It's not really a safe situation to just have those wrapping around under your vehicle. Some people try to tuck them in, get them kind of set up in there underneath that chain. You might even do that before you lock down your last cam tensioner here. It's too tight inaudible 00:04:57 so maybe you can just tuck that in and under and then cam that over, so you get a nice secure fit there. The other option you have, just removal of them. Take a pair of chain cutters, a pair of bolt cutters and just clip them off once you know what kind of links you're going to need. In this case, I take those last three off, this side I take those last four off and you wouldn't have to worry about it. Now if any non self tensioning chain, we do recommend the use of a tensioner. We're going to use a new style that came out from Glacier, actually gives us six arms, the part number on it is PW105, it's going to come in a two pack. Basically you just take it, real neat looking deal, just start working it in around the outside of our chain. Of coarse we have six connection points, so kind of spread them out evenly there. See just like that we've got them tensioned up. We're ready to hit the road, now that we've taken a good look at the Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains and how they're going to work on our 1995 Jeep Wrangler. That will complete today's test fit. .
