Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/ESP functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your trunk if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new cable chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow cables that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile cables can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing cable chains is easy.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the cables.

Cross cable connections have a smooth side that goes against the tire

2. Where each cross cable attaches, you'll notice there is a smooth side and one with an edge. Make sure the smooth side faces in to sit against your tire's sidewall as you drape the cables over your tire.

Making connections behind and in front of the wheel

3. On the front of the tire, feed the cable through the connection loop until it's tight, then use the lever to keep the extra cable from flapping as you drive. Repeat this on the backside of the tire.

Rubber adjusters ensure a tight fit

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Jacob very good service rep and got my chains to me in record time! Great looking product in nice nylon fabric bag. Will recommend etrailer to friends for sure. Thanks Jacob and etrailer.

by:

These chains are good quality and easy to install.

I expect to deal with more icy road conditions than deep snow, and I think they ride smother and will cause less wear on my tires than the old-style heavy chains.

by:

The product was as expected. They were easy to install in the comfort of my garage and fit nicely. Chains were not required on my recent trip, but the peace of mind having them was great. Don't forget to order tensioners.

by:

They fit nicely in the back of my 4x4. haven't had to use them yet. It's a purchase to keep the wife happy; she wouldn't be too understanding if we were to get stranded in the ice for lack of traction. all safe for now. Look foreword to putting them under load on an icy hwy. For now, they're doing their job.

by:

Interesting use of physics. Easily installed, well presented in advertisement. Delightful sales person. They look very substantial and follow exactly what I was looking for. I saw a set last winter and now they are mine. I bought a set for the front so I will have all drive. I live in mid forest, forest service road access.

A good point to point out is the fotos on the instructions are very poor difficult to see detail. I scanned them and enlarged to no avail. However, I was saved by the web pages which had great fotoss and made comprehension a beautiful thing. thanks j

by:

I just received the chains so I have not used them yet. But the service and customer support was excellent. Product arrived exactly as stated and in good shape. Also, eTrailer staff was very helpful with their knowledge of the product, which made the buying process easy

Remember to stay under 30 MPH, or what is specified in the instructions, with tire chains and they should not be driven on exposed concrete or pavement. They must only be used on snow or ice covered roads.

Worked way better than the chains (Titan chain HD) I bought initially from etrailer. I have a 2021 F150 Platinum with the 20" tires and the chains would not stay on the treads no matter what I tried. Just tried these ladder cables in Tahoe and they stayed on the tires just fine. The only downside to these over the chains is that they aren't continuous in the tire so when the road is clear (no snow) they ride crazy rough. It's like driving over 1/2" diameter sticks spaced 1 ft apart down the road so it feels pretty bad. But they were effective in helping me drive up and down my access road that was covered in deep snow one day and ice another day, they got the job done and stayed in place. Oh, I also used them with a set of bungee tensioners from etrailer for full disclosure.

I ordered the snow cables for my Subaru 2018 Outback and received them in 3 days! Your customer service is outstanding! I reordered a second set and received them in 4 days. I just had a chance to use them in Atlanta when we had ice and snow. I used only one set on the front and they worked perfectly. i watched the etrailer installation video for a Subaru and it made the easy to install. It took me less then 5 minutes in my garage. (Outside in the snow and ice might take longer). I drove around Atlanta in the ice and snow and the cables performed flawlessly. I plan to buy a set for my daughter. Thanks again!

We can't stop anyone from buying any of our tire chains regardless of what the owners manual states. We can only state that we can never recommend you disobey the fit recommendations listed in the owners manual of a vehicle in regards to whether tire chains will be safe to use and not cause damage. If your owners manual specifies tire chains only on the rear of your 2012 Chevrolet Suburban, then I would also recommend to use tire chains only in the rear. Sometimes the reason the manufacturer does not recommend tire chains on a vehicle is because of clearance, but it also could be for other reasons. • Why are Snow Tire Chains Not Recommended for Certain Size Tires on Ford F-150
Normally when an owners manual of a Ford F-150 does not recommend to use snow chains on certain tire sizes it is because of the larger tire sizes. When chains are installed on the larger tire sizes it could cause the snow chains to interfere with parts on the vehicle. Some of the Ford F-150 trucks use a 275/55R20 tire size that could cause clearance problems if used with snow tire chains. I would recommend to use the information that is printed in your vehicles owners manual regarding...

I would recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, item # PW3027C, for the P275/60R20 tire size on your 2011 Infiniti QX56. This snow tire cable chain is a SAE Class S type chain. A SAE Class S snow tire chain means that the minimum sidewall clearance is .59 inches, which is 15 mm. So if a snow chain has an internal clearance of 15 mm or less they will be classified as a SAE Class S snow chain.
