How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Dodge Ram Pickup

I bought this product for my Ram truck to retrieve fire wood at the top of my snow covered mountain land. The snow was 6 inches deep, very dense, and mixed with layers of ice. The ascent was about 150 feet over a distance of 300 yards. All 4 tires were fitted with this product. I was not able to accomplish my goal. The truck could not get the proper traction to navigate the hill. Without tramping hard on the gas, the tires just spun and dug holes to the stone lane surface. I can't fairly rate this product on it's performance because there may not be any tire chain that would have worked under these treacherous conditions. However, after taking the cables off, I was unable to roll them up to get them back into the bags they were in. For that reason I give them a poor rating. I would love to see a video of someone trying to do this. My solution was to make a wooden spool for each pair on which I rolled them up for storage. The bags are too small, especially for one person. The manufacturer failed to provide an easy means for storage.

I haven't actually had a chance to test out the product, but the service was excellent. We needed chains at the last minute due to an unexpected snow storm for our planned trip to the mountains. I had an extremely difficult time finding chains for my Land Rover LR4, as they were sold out everywhere or $1000 from the dealer. I was able to get the chains I needed with expedited shipping just in time for our trip (we only had a couple of days!). We were able to make it up and down the mountain with just 4 wheel drive, so I can't speak as to the product itself. But the service was superior!

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

OK for the price. More junk from China. I bought these for our new Grand Cherokee because CA state law requires me to carry them whether I need them or not. (e.g. In 14 yrs of snow driving in our old Volvo AWD I never once opened the box of chains for that car and gave them away with the car). I do NOT expect to ever have to use these on our new Grand Cherokee either so I guess it doesn't matter much what I think of these... HOWEVER, I will just say that I was disappointed to find that these have no application chart provided with the chains. I have never bought a set of chains that did not give a semi-complete list of all applicable tire sizes. These only list 4 sizes (not mine) and then the "Made in China" tag simply states that there are also other sizes as well. etrailer only states that these are 'verified' to fit my car. If it ever were to really come down to it, I hope they do because there's no way I'm going to waste my time and energy 'trying' them on when I'm never going to need them anyway. I wanted the expensive Thule that Jeep recommends for our Cherokee and would have paid 3 times as much to know that I have the best but I also truly believe that it's very possible I would never use them so these cheap ones I will feel better about not keeping if I ever get rid of the car.

Great Product. It was the right size for my tires. The chains worked as expected. The only thing was that one broke wile i was driving. It didn't ripped of the tire or damage my vehicle, it broke from the loose ende where you adjust the chain so that it is tight to the tire. I don't know if it was the condition of the road or something else. I still can use it on my truck but i don't think i can use it on a bigger tire size.

  • Dually Tire Chain Recommendation for Tire Size 245/75-17
We have dually tire chain setups for your tire size of 245/75-17 like the Titan Twist Link set part # TC4231 which will work really well, but since cable setups are more designed for emergency use they aren't typically used on heavier duty vehicles like duallys. They don't typically last very long so I wouldn't recommend that route for yours with a cab over camper. The twist link setup I mentioned is a great choice if you want a smoother ride quality and the V-bars part # TC4831 are...

When the auto maker permits their use tire chains will generally work better than tire cables since they have more surface that can bite into snow and ice. We do offer tire chains for your tire size P215/50-R17 that are shown on the linked page. All of these are the special low-profile type which are called S-Class chains and they include both cables like # PW1038 and chains like diamond pattern Konig chains # TH00023095. • 2016 BMW x35i Snow Chain or Cables Recommendation Tire Size 315/35R20
In basically every way tire chains are superior to cables. Only exception is cables are pretty cheap, but you do get what you pay for in this situation you should keep that in mind. Also for your tire size of 315/35R20 we do not carry any cables that fit. So for tire chains I recommend the Konig Chains part # th2004705265 as they will give you excellent traction, install easily, and will last you a long time. I attached an install video for these for you to check out as well.

  • 2017 Audi Q7 Snow Cables Recommendation Tire Size 255/55-19
We do have tire cables that fit your tire size of 255/55-19 with the part # PW3010C. For a snow traction device that fits your tire size that offers even better clearance, traction, durabiliy, and ease of install the best option is the Konig K-Summit part # TH2004565767. These don't drape over the inner sidewall of the tire at all so the clearance affected is minimal.

  • Recommended Use of Snow Cables on 2013 Toyota Highlander AWD
When it comes to use of snow tire chains on a vehicle the auto maker always gets the final word. That said, often the language in owner's manuals is fairly ambiguous regarding use of tire chains since tire sizes can vary on a vehicle and that can have a significant impact on the sizes and types of chains that are permissible. The issue generally comes down to the amount of clearance within the wheel wells and if this is adequate to allow for a tire chain to fit without damage to brake...

  • Do Tire Chains or Cables Offer Better Traction and Which is Better
Actual tire chains are better than cables. Chains offer better traction and longer life. They also seem to be more corrosion resistant. Some chains are easier to put on that others. The same goes with cables but the cables are lighter. Cables are good for occasional use but if you need chains frequently then going with actual chains is preferred. Some vehicles require chains or cables that do not stick out from the tire very far because of limited clearance between the tire and vehicle....

Tire chains are the best for deep snow. Snow tires do a great job but there's nothing that works better in super deep snow than chains. Cables are basically a one-time use chain that's bargain priced. For your tire size of 245/65-17 the cable set part # PW3010C will work great to get you out of an emergency situation but if you plan to use chains more than a few times these won't hold up long enough to be a worthy investment. For your 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude I definitely recommend tire chains over cables. For your upcoming snow trip where you will likely be on a lot of snow covered roads, chains are just going to provide you with a much better overall experience.
