How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)

Video Transcript for Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, Part Number PW20286. These cable chains are designed to fit tires from 15 all the way up to 20 inches and offer a 35 mile an hour maximum speed. These chains are great for occasional use. They've got a sturdy steel wire construction around the outside, as well as on the cross cables. They've got hardened springs that cover the cross cable. It's going to provide that traction we need.

They'll move freely back and forth and really get embedded there, so we can get good grip on that ice and snow. They've designed it with a nice, low, profile design to help keep and maintain a smooth ride. Also, these are going to work great on both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles. The ladder design on these chains is going to meet all Department of Transportation requirements in all states. We're here on the passenger side of the vehicle. We spread our chain out here, just to make sure we don't have any kinks or any tangles that we need to work out before we get started. We're working with a tire size of 275-55R20, but again, many different sizes available with these Glacier chains, so you'll have a wide variety of sizes that these are going to fit. The first thing you want to look for is the is yellow, triangle shape tag.

This is going to say right hand side, or left hand side, and give you the indication of which way the tires should be rotating. That arrow will be facing towards the front of the car. We'll now move that arrow and that yellow tag down, around to the front side of our tire there. We'll want the first rung of our ladder to be tucked nicely right underneath the front side of our wheel, there. Give it as much slack as it needs. Get it tucked in there, just like that.

When we roll forward, we'll be able to gather that up right along the rear here. Maybe up here in the top somewhere, so we can get it connected. We'll now pull back and get as much slack as we can out of the front side of our chains, here. Then we can bring our rear up. On the back side here on the rear, we'll bring the cable right through that, and we'll have to rotate up right into that catch point. We'll then bring our rest of our slack out here to the front side. Just like on the rear side there, we've got another catch here.

We'll want to choose one of the mounting locations here. We've got 7 to pick from. On the rear, we use the second. That means those here on the front, we need to use the first, the second, or the third. Once we have that in place and in that set location, we'll use the large lever. Take up some of that slack. See if you can't get that last one. There we go. We'll pull that down. That's going to give us all the tension we'll need. The leverage is designed to come down and hook on to the cable. Depending on where you'll be positioning your cable, your tag end may be a little bit longer. They've got two nice catches designed right in here. You can simply clip it into there and hold it. Keep it from flopping around on you. WE've got our rubber adjuster, here. This is Part Number PW99. It's got 5 hooks on it. We're just going to find 5 locations around our cable chain, here. We're going to hook these in all the way around, 5 different locations facing out away from our sidewall. We don't want to run any risks of getting them up there and having any damage occur. You just want to put some tension on there to stiffen that up a little bit. We're going to drive forward a few car lengths. We'll double check it just to be sure we don't have any extra slack in there that we need to get out or any issues to deal with. With our chain secure, that's going to complete today's look at the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, Part Number PW2028C. .

Ask the Experts about this Glacier Tire Chains

  • Do the Cross Chains on Cable Snow Tire Chains Move on the Side Chains or are they Fixed In Place
The cross cables on the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, # PW2045C, are clamped to the side cables with steel fasteners that will not move on the side cables. This ensures that the cables will remain evenly spaced when traveling with the chains installed on tires. The cross cables are not welded to the side cables. They are clamped to the side cables, similar to the way a ferrule is clamped to a safety cable in a garage door application. I produced a short video showing how the cables are...

  • Recommended Tire Cables for RV's with Limited Wheel Well Clearance
In order to determine which tire chains are compatible with your RV you would need to look in the owner's manual. If space is indeed limited then you would want to use a set of chains/cables that are class S compatible as this will allow for the greatest amount of wheel wheel clearance. For your 305/70-22.5 tires, I recommend using the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chain part # PW2045C for the front and part # PW4045C for the rear. These cables have a low profile which in addition to added...

  • Snow Chains or Cables for a Heavy Duty Truck In Canada
You would have to check with your local DOT to determine if tire cables are an acceptable form of tire chains in your area. Most likely you would want a chain and not a cable though, especially for a heavy duty truck since the cables are not as durable as a chain. We have several chains designed for heavy duty trucks that would be a much better option, especially in Canada where the snowfall is very heavy. Follow the link I attached to the right and enter your tire size to see what is...

  • Do Glacier Tire Chains for Heavy Truck Include a Vinyl Carry Bag
Yes, the Glacier Cable Snow Chains, part # PW2045C do come in a vinyl carry bag like the other Glacier Cable chains. We also recommend using the Glacier Rubber Adjusters, part # PW97, with the these chains to make tightening the chains faster and easier.
