How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

I couldn't get my motor home back from repair because of deep snow so looked around for chains and settled on these cable chains. If it wasn't for the -25 wind chill making my fingers numb installing would have been easy. The only problem was one lever lock wouldn't stay closed. I can cure that but hope to never use them again. Great product!

2012 Toyota Tacoma

Glacier chains for my 2012 Tacoma went on easy. I haven't had the chance to actually use them in the snow yet, so I can't comment on their effectiveness or durability. My only complaint concerns the bag used to store them. It's way too small. I struggled to get them out of the bag the first time. It was almost as if the bag was constructed around the chains. Needless to say there was no way I was going to get them back in the bag. I store them in an old gym bag. As far as etrailer.com goes, 5 stars all the way. They want to make sure you are properly serviced.

Subaru

The order came quick. I purchased them for a 2021 Subaru. Subaru voids the car warranty if you install chains or cables. California requires you to carry chains even though their is no need due to horrible drivers. These cables came in a very nice carrying bag that fit very nice my spare compartment where they will stay and never be used because I actually know have to drive in 2” of snow with an awd. Highly recommend these for cars as they are lightweight, deliver quick and store easily.

Never had to use it. Bought this because it was long term predicted to snow during the time frame of a 2019 winter trip to Las Vegas. However the worst we encountered was a very light dusting with nothing accumulating on the highway. The product is stored in my Suburban, next to the jack, just in case.

I am giving this product one star short of "excellent" only because they have not ever been used since purchased - and I hope it stays that way. I do think it's a solid product as I have practiced putting these chains on my SUV just in case I will need them and reasonably priced. Thanks!

2014 Ford Expedition

While not as aggressive as all-link chains I found this design to provide good traction in snow and moderate icing conditions. Chains are light weight, easy to mount, and store in compact container when not in use. Design provides extra measure of protection for brake, suspension, and body components where clearances are reduced by tire/wheel size or custom modifications. There isn't a lot of excitement when it comes to tire chains and adjusters unless it is when you need them and you don't have them, or you have them and they don't fit, or you have them and they don't work. With etrailer I managed to miss ALL the excitement! As always I received excellent sales and shipping service to get me the correct chains and adjusters in time for an unscheduled trip, they fit to a "T", and provided excellent traction with no sidewall wear or impact with body or brake components. I always marvel at finding the best service for truck and trailer equipment half way across the country rather than in my own backyard.

These chains appear to be what I need, I will be traveling from the deep south to the Tetons in February and just might have a need for chains on a very seldom basis. These chains appear to be much easier to put on and take off, and the price is very good. I do want to commend etrailer.com customer service (Bridget A). I called to try to correct an error I made on my online order and she was excellent in correcting my problem - - thank you Bridget.

Comments
I still have the chains in the bag, but they have never been on my tires. I was really glad to not have to use them, but have them ready for the next trip to the snow for just in case.

I haven't used my chains in snow yet, but I installed them on the tires of my F-150 and they fit perfectly. I also found them to be very easy to install. When I go for a ski trip this winter, it will be great to know that I don't have to be overly worried about the weather. I'll also comment that the chains came in a handy carrying case that will easily fit under the seat. Exactly what I was needing.

Buick Enclave

I went to my local tire person in Turlock and they said the only thing that would work on my Buick Enclave was a traction device that required my lug nuts to be removed to put it on. I just needed some type of chain/cable in case Inter-State 5 had snow on for a planned trip in a couple of weeks. I searched the internet and this company showed up. I read some of the reviews and decided to give them a call. The person I talked to knew about tire traction devices and told me a small cable will work on my car and still be legal in the State of California. I gave them my credit card and my cables showed up on the date promised. I will use them again should I need cables/chains in the future.

I received my snow chains/cables very quickly, in time for our latest round of bad weather. I test fitted them and they seem a little loose but my tires on have about 1/4 of the tread left. If the tires were new or newer, they would fit better. I tried to put them back in the storage bag they came in and it ripped apart at the seams. So while I think the chains are good quality I can not give them highest marks based on the bag. Customer service gets an A+

Have not actually used the tire chains yet, but they look like good quality. They appear to be just what I wanted and expected. Etrailer shipped them quicker than I expected.

Comments
I purchased the chains because I travel into snow country once or twice a year. Drivers are required to carry chains, even if your vehicle is 4 wheel drive, here in Calif. I have carried them now but have not had to use them, thanks to 4 wheel drive.

Used these for our 2015 Yukon with 20 in wheels on a 2018 ski trip. Were great in the snow. Easy to put on, although it took a few times to get good at it. Unfortunately I used them on our way down and then drove 7 hours home and left in the garbage bag overnight. After pulling them out, they had completely rusted because of the humidity (ocean air). So I get to buy another set.

2012 Buick Enclave

I bought these for my 2012 Buick Enclave (Lamda platform). These will just barely clear the front strut - by maybe 1/4 of an inch - although that is with a brand new set of tires on the car. They fit very well on the tire, though, so no risk of them coming loose.

They fit good here at home in the gravel driveway. I'll have to wait until we get to Colorado on our hunting trip to actually determine how they do in the snow and mud.The main objective was clearance on the front tires and that seems to be OK so far.

2003 GMC Yukon

I used these last year on my Yukon. We went out into the Ochoco Mountains to cut a Christmas tree. We got into ice on 6" of snow. Pulled these chains out and 20min later we were heading our way home. Don't leave home without them. My only complaint is that the instructions need to be laminated or on waterproof paper. The instructions just desentagrated when it got wet.

I ordered the tire chains because we were predicted to have an ice storm. It did not happen but here we usually get a couple every year. I ordered on line and was expecting to get my order in a week to 10 days. But they updated the shipping and my order arrived in 3 days. I could not be more pleased with the concern of the owners and the service that I received from etrailer. I will be ordering from them in the future.

Thanks for the follow up! That's fantastic customer service! Unfortunately, I'm not too happy with the chains. I used them in heavy snow in Angel Fire, NM last year around this time. While we were there they worked great; without them we couldn't gotten to our cabin every day after skiing. The problem is they completely rusted not too long after we got back. I don't think I'll have to buy a new pair this year, but it's likely I will have to much sooner than I expected. I won't buy that brand again. Again, thanks for the follow up!

I've ordered cables through etrailer a few times now. I couldn't be happier with the rapid delivery. These cables are extremely effective on lake ice and snow. I use them when ice fishing. My truck was stuck in deep snow overnight. I was worried because I am a small lady and have bought chains before, which I returned because they were too difficult for me to put on the truck. I also recommend picking up a set of the Glacier Rubber Adjusters, part # PW99, because the Glacier cable chains do not include any type of tensioner or adjuster. If you are interested in the cable style chain, I would recommend taking a look at the Titan Cable Tire Chains, # TC2028, as well. For adjusters, you can use part # TCMA2. The Glacier cable chains are...

  • Should Tire Chains Go On All 4 Tires of a 4x4 2013 Ford F-150 with 275/55-20 Tires
You can put chains on all 4 wheels of a 4-Wheel drive vehicle if you want to. Doing so will also help with steering. But you do not have to put them on all 4 wheels. If you go with just 2 wheels then put the chains on the back. Chains that are going to offer the best traction are going to be square-link chains. For tire size 275/55-20 we have Glacier chains with cam tighteners, # PWH3329SLC, Pewag chains with cam tighteners, # PWE3229SC, and manual adjust Pewag chains, # PWE3229S. Be...

  • Recommended Occasional-Use Snow Chains for 2003 F150 and 1993 Plymouth Voyager
On a 4WD vehicle, having chains on all 4 wheels is not a requirement. If you will only be using chains on two wheels, you would typically have the chains on the back wheels although for best performance having chains on all 4 wheels would be best. If the chains will sit in the cargo area of the vehicle, and the chances of them actually being used is pretty slim, then a set of the cable chains like # PW3027C for your F150 or # PW1030 for your Voyager would work fine. Keep in mind that...

  • Recommended Chains for 2015 Toyota Tundra Limited with Tire Size 275/55-R20
Your first step when considering tire chains on any vehicle is a check of the owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding their use. Many vehicles are limited to using special low-profile S-Class chains that do not require too much wheel well clearance. Before purchasing any tire chain check your vehicle's manual carefully and if in doubt speak to your local dealership. If you plan on using snow chains only once in a great while and on the road only then the Glacier Cable...

  • Class S Tire Chains for 2015 Ford F-150 with 285/60-20 Size Tires
The only Class S rated snow chains/cables we have available for the larger 285/60-20 tires on your Ford F-150 is with the Titan Chain Cable Snow Tire Chains # TC3029. These are low-carbon steel rollers that will allow for better traction in the snow. Please keep in mind though that cable chains like these likely won't give you the type of traction in heavier snow or mud like a traditional tire chain would. The issue is that there just isn't a low clearance/Class S rated set of standard...

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2008 Chevrolet Suburban with 275/55-20 Tires
Let me begin by saying that I cannot recommend anything that would contradict your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. I looked at the owners manual for your vehicle, and GM does indeed specifically prohibit using chains on vehicles using your tire size. Other Suburban owners certainly do use chains, but GM lists the prohibition for the larger tire sizes, like yours and the 265/65-18 tire size. Typically, vehicle manufacturers will prohibit the use of tire chains because of limited...

  • Will the Same Cable Tire Chains Fit 275/55-20 and 255/75-17 Tires
The 2 tire sizes are roughly the same diameter but there is a bit more to it than just that. The comparable chains that fit the 255/75-17 tires have a shorter side chain. Otherwise they are nearly identical. So you could potentially use # PW2028C if you want but you might not be able to get them tight enough. For the best fit I recommend # PW3027C.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2012 Ford F-350 with Tire Size 275/70R18
For as heavy of a truck as your 2012 Ford F-350 is I would not recommend the use of cable type chains since they wouldn't last very long. I'd rather see you go with the part # TC2533 is a diamond pattern chain that is also pretty easy to install. Diamond patterns provide a smoother ride quality and provide better traction around corners. The ladder style are better for very deep snow.

  • Is It Required To Use Bungee Cords, Chain Tensioners And Or Rubber Adjusters When Using Snow Chains
Using bungee cords, chain tensioners or rubber adjusters isn't a requirement but certainly recommended. Rubber adjusters such as # PW99, # PW100 will make it easier to fit and tighten snow chains like the Glacier snow chains # PW2028C you referenced. The reason manufacturers recommend the rubber adjuster # PW99 or # PW100 (depending on tire size) is because the Glacier tires chains # PW2028C doesn't have an automatic tensioner. Always check your vehicle owner's manual first to ensure...
