Konig snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese nickel alloy steel for ultimate durability. Features include dual-sided, 9-mm-diameter, D-shape links that provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. Anti-scratch nylon bumpers protect your Chevrolet HHR's wheel rims.

Included with each pair of chains are mounting instructions, a kneeling mat and a pair of gloves, all packaged in a sturdy container. Konig's CG9 tire snow chains are backed by a 5-year warranty.

CG9 Installation

How to Install the CG9 Snow Chain

  1. Spread the chain around the back of the tire.
  2. Connect the plastic-covered, yellow and blue cable on the back side of the tire.
  3. Pull the chain over the top and around the tire. Connect the red hook to the red loop.
  4. Make the last connection by running the red loop through the buckle and then to the red hook attached to the tensioning cable.
  5. Simply drive forward to activate the patented self-centering, auto-tensioning system to ensure a perfect fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Chevrolet HHR

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Konig Self-Tensioning Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains Road Test

Speaker 1: When snow and ice make driving difficult, tire chains can give you the traction you need to maintain control of your vehicle. Laws regarding snow chain use vary by region. Your area may require the use of tire chains in certain weather conditions. You'll also want to check your owner's manual to see what your vehicle's manufacturer says regarding tire chain use. Let's look at our tire chains in action. These square-link diamond pattern tire chains provide excellent traction in snow and ice for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance. The diamond pattern offers more tire coverage and offers increased traction and stopping power when we drive forward and during turns.

The integrated tensioners let you control the fit of your chains. Check out our handling as we turn, and check them out when we brake.

Two days from time of order to arrival. I ordered this set of chains for my wife's car, which will only be used for emergency-situation driving when we get a heavy snow in north Georgia. Sans emergency we stay home. The chain set is as advertised, and appears to be high quality. I watched the installation video at the time of selecting the product 2 days before arrival. Right after arrival I installed one of the chains from memory without any problems. Installation was very fast, ~ 2 minutes, for the first time. I have one minor reservation: The tensioning system has two plastic components, a bungie cord attached to a large PLASTIC hook, and this hook attaches to a mating PLASTIC ratcheting cable that connects to the tensioning chain. I realize these chains have a 5-year warranty, but said warranty does no good if the tensioning system fails during emergency driving. 592146

I swore off tire chains over 10y ago due to the hassle of installation, usually in blizzard conditions at night on the side of the road. Alas, the State of California sees fit to require them on mountain passes. So I find these and etrailer helps me out with fitment and other questions. The chains are, as advertised, are fairly easy to install (way easier than the cheapies at the local auto parts store). The self-tensioning system seemed to work but I may give a tug on them just to make sure they are taut as possible as I did get a fair bit of scuffing on my aluminum rims (from the parts that are plastic covered/coated to prevent scratching vibrating slightly against the rim). I think if the chain self-tensioned a bit tighter this may not have happened. Overall, a good product, seemed to work in a couple inches of snow, but not in 2 feet (duh) of white stuff! Vibration wasn't too bad on the dry patches of asphalt and the chains generally seemed to hold up well from the limited use I've given them. I would recommend them, just make sure they are taut enough to not tap against your rim. 374552

The chains work well and have saved me several times. To me they are worth the money. They are a little tricky to put on the first time, and the instructions leave a lot to be desired- in their attempt to be global, there are no written instructions, only pictures which can be hard to interpret especially outside in on a cold night. I recommend watching a youtube video (I found several) and trying it before you get stuck. Once the chains are on, they work great. I got up a winding mountain road with no problem. One other thing Thule should do is wrap each chain in its own plastic bag within the case. When I took them out for the first time they were a tangled mess. Cons - Instructions, Tangled packaging. Pros- They worked, they saved my behind, they didn't do any damange to the tire or car. 170911

Quite the pain to untangle the chains each time. Overall quality appears decent, but the use of some plastic in the construction of the chains will need to be tested once used on the road. Install and removal simple enough. Cheap "gloves" and "kneeling pad" are included. Probably toss them, as they are rather useless - made of very thin plastic like a trash bag. 460241

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

I bought these chains for my 2013 Mazda 3 for a trip into the mountains. I didn't think I would actually need them that early in the year, but eventually I was required to use them. When I unboxed the chains I was a little puzzled since I ordered 'Thule' chains but received a box labeled 'König'. I was a little afraid having received the wrong product, but apart from the branding the product looked identical to what I ordered and some online research confirmed that Thule and König are associated. Would have been nice to have a notice about that though. I practiced putting on the chains once in best conditions at home. It wasn't really that complicated and the instructions are easy to follow. I'd recommend doing such a practice run though, since you don't want to face this for the first time at the roadside in the snow. A few weeks later I was returning from a trip into the mountains and one pass required chains (or other traction equipment, but for me that meant chains). I got the chains out and went over the instructions again and then started putting the chains on. I was glad I had done the practice run at home and got the chains on fairly quickly without bigger trouble (and I saw plenty of people at the roadside struggling with theirs or paying for that service). With that I made it across the pass. On the other side of the pass I found taking the chains off more troublesome than putting them on. The chains itself worked great and it wasn't a problem to loosen and detach them but it's a little inconvenient since the chains need to be in the right position to come off the wheel (it's all in documented in the instructions though). I guess with a 2nd person directing the driver when to stop it would be very simple, on my own I had to move the car back and forth tiny bits to get the positioning right (i.e. i was jumping in and out of the car moving it a bit and checking tire/chain position). 587706

Koenig recently purchased the tire chain subsidiary from Thule, the chains are exactly the same. The only difference is the brand name.

I have not had the opportunity test/ try the product. My only review at this point is the product shipped very quickly and was well packaged. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the product is in a carrying case. No more loose chains spreading all over the cargo area. The weather should be nice this weekend so I hope the product goes on as easily as seen in videos. 349560

I just got my Konig Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains in the mail from etrailer.com. I could not be more stoked on the order. First, the product is amazing. Second, I ordered free shipping and it got across the US in under 5 days over Christmas. That's a feat in and of itself. I go out of town 12/31 and will most likely have to use them, so having them here now is great peace of mind. Also, the auto-tracking on the website is HUGE! i went back to get my order number and noticed that it was one click to see exactly where the product was at that moment. 10-stars for every step in the order process from etrailer. Thank you all and Happy New Year! 462883

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

I received the Thule chains and installed them to make sure they fit my car. They fit great and were easy to install and remove. Even seems like these chains might not be too difficult to install ~after~ getting stuck in the snow (bring a shovel). I know myself ... I probably won't be proactive and put them on before I get stuck in the snow. Ease of installation ~after~ getting stuck is an important feature. My first impression is that these don't look like "heavy duty" tire chains by any stretch of the imagination. I'm hoping if I do ever need these it will only be for a few miles or less. I'm thinking about ordering a spare pair because if something breaks (particularly if the self adjusting ratchet mechanism fails) I won't attempt a repair on the side of the road in a snow storm. But if I have spare chains with me I'll be able to swap 'em out with new and keep going with a full complement of chains. The chains did come with some replacement links in case a chain link fails. I think I'll keep a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and some gloves in the case with the chains. The main reason behind my purchase is that if I'm prepared to install tire chains then it's unlikely I'll ever have a need to install them. But without them I might be stuck in the first snowdrift of the season. :-) 439764

The chains have not been used. I bought them just in case it was needed on my trip. When it arrived, I tried fitting it to the tire. It was easy to install and fit perfectly. The design is excellent and at 9 mm thick, there was ample clearance between the inside of the tire wall and the shock absorber. It also had protective caps to prevent scratching of the alloy wheels. I had tried another make that was advertised as only 6 mm thick, but in reality was in jeopardy of scraping the shock absorber because of its stiff joints. There was also no protection for potential scratching of the alloy wheels. 60574

The chains were very easy to install - particularly for a first-time user. My wife and I were able to quickly understand the installation process. The chains do tend to get tangled during storage and presents the biggest challenge. But once untangled, you can install both sides in just a couple of minutes. Now we wait for an opportunity to use them.... 443709

We bought the Thule self tensioning chains. We were caught in the recent ice and snow storm that hit northern New Mexico and the pan handle of Texas. We saw over 2" of solid ice on 287 from Dalhart To Amarillo. We would have been one of the hundreds of stranded motorists that night without the tire chanins. Easy to install and de-install. Our chains were installed on a 2011 VW Jetta TDI. 111305

Hello Lewis,Good day, I have a question for you please?Do you recall if the chains rubbed at all? We have a 2010 VW Jetta TDI Cup Edition with the 17 rim option and very little clearance, so Im concerned that they might rub.Your reply would be quite helpful please.Thank-you,

good product but beware dmw owners. you can get these on but it's a tight fit. there's not much room to get your hands in between the tire and the wheel well. i did it in sunny conditions and it was not easy. in snow and cold all the much harder. the chains are a solid product. shipping took a couple days longer than expected so order early. i hope i don't need to use these but at least i have them if needed. btw 2014 428i 331018

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

This review is after 1 winter of light duty use. *** Overview *** I bought these low-profile chains to fit a 2013 Jetta TDI SportWagen. Ease of use: 3.5 stars Effectiveness: 4 stars Durability: 1 star Ultimately, these did what they were advertised to do. The details below are mostly about the specific combination of these chains with the TDI in icy and packed-snow conditions in Portland, OR. *** Details *** Ease of install is okay. You definitely want to practice a bunch of times before you really need to put them on in the snow. The instructional video is nice. Main complaint is that once they get icy they're a pain to deal with. Much of this is related to the minimal clearance to the wheel wells in the Jetta, and the way they tend to get packed with snow and ice when driving (and also getting your glove-covered hands into the areas they need to go). You'll need something to hack through the ice if you need to put these on and off mid-trip (we mostly use them around town so it's mostly something I can manage in the garage, but I used my ice scraper once... that sucked). As others have noted, you basically need to take them off with the wheel in the same rotational position as it was when you put them on, which is trivial but an unpleasant surprise if you don't know that. Functionally, they provide reasonable traction for my front-wheel-drive TDI. I used only chains on the two drive wheels. Our use case is mostly light snow and ice in the elevations of the city of Portland. They're not going to get you through the rockies, but that's more of a limitation of the car's clearance and FWD and less about the chains. We never got stuck with them, and with careful driving they provided reasonable traction at controlled low speed up and down steep windy concrete and asphalt roads. My main complaint is durability. My TDI has traction control, but has a tendency to be very torquey at low RPMs, like say starting uphill from a stop. This causes initial wheel slippage when facing uphill, and can also cause torque spikes when shifting gears uphill. These low-profile chains can't handle _any_ slippage without breaking links. This is worst if they're still trying to self-tension while they're slipping and catching. The diamond pattern means that they're still reasonably good traction and tension-wise when broken, but they'll hit your wheel wells and drive you crazy. There are replacement links provided, but they're pretty hard to repair on the road---if this is something that you worry about then get some really intense pliers to carry around. Basically, you need to be really gentle during the first 10-20 yards of driving while they self-tension, and you need to control torque to avoid slipping and catching on partially icy pavement. I have snow tires on steel wheels so I wasn't using the rim protectors. 575363

I bought these chains for my daughter who is moving to Chicago from California. The owners manual of her Jeep Compass warns about the limited clearance and these chains were perfect because of their low profile. I also bought these particular chains (I now own 3 sets) for their ease of use. Snow is not something that any of my girls are used to being from California's Central Valley and putting chains on was not something that any of them had the faintest clue about. These chains are so easy to install that my wife and daughter were actually racing each other the other day to see who could install faster. My youngest daughter and wife are driving across county as I type this review carrying with them these Thule chains and I am confident that they and their Thules will handle any snow they encounter. 162792

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

I purchased these snow chains for a trip through the Sierra during heavy February snows (25"+ per night), from California to central Nevada and back. They are, in comparison to older styles of snow chains, easier to put on and take off. The tight Mini Cooper wheel well makes it a bit harder than it needs to be, but application and removal, in a blizzard, was fairly straightforward. And that is the only nice thing I have to say about these, because they broke in four places (three on one chain, one on the other) in under 30 miles. At no time did I drive on bare pavement or exceed 30 mph, and they broke. The snow in the Sierra was so bad that it took 8.5 hours to get through Donner Pass, which is exactly when I did not need to hear snow chains break, thwack against my wheel well, and then have to use baling wire (sure am glad I'm a sheep shearer and had THAT in the car) to hold them together so I don't end up stranded in the mountains. Somehow, after just a few miles, the first "break" was a bend in the first red hook to which you connect. It was bent to the extent of being unusable and, a critical connection, I had to use baling wire to enforce/replace that red hook. On both tires, chain links broke at different times, one of which got sucked into the wheel well and, fortunately, did not wrap itself around my axle. I was able to jack up the car, remove the wheel, and get the bit of chain out. I could go on, but you get the idea. It is NOT what you need in the Sierra at night in a freezing blizzard, with no shoulder on the side of the road. Incredibly disappointed and relieved I could make these chains last long enough to get me below 2,000 feet elevation. The experience has, at least, solved a marital dispute: We'll be getting a 4WD vehicle. 345376

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

I waited to review the chains until I actually had the opportunity to use them. I drive a 2003 Avalon with front wheel drive. (1) Start with the extremely fast delivery of the chains, couldn't believe how quickly I received my order from e-trailer without having asked for expedited delivery. (2) A bit of advice: Listen to the other reviewers who suggest that one make a practice run at installing them. Don't wait until you are stuck in a storm. They ARE easy to install and take off, but knowing what one is doing really makes a huge difference. (3) I've had the "pleasure" of really needing the chains twice recently. We've had a very snowy/icy winter here in the northeast in early 2014. These chains delivered all they promised, easy on, easy off and great traction in very deep snow and on thick ice. 116946

I hate the idea of putting on chains in the middle of a trip across the mountains, HOWEVER these are fairly easy. The video is an excellent resource. 110440

Product is pretty nice and easier to put on than regular diamond chains. I like the self-tightening feature and the case it comes in. These are much more expensive than conventional diamond chains. 446739

Review from a similar Konig CG9 in Tire Chains

First impression opening up the box was good. The chains come in a great carrying case. Then, open up the case. It's very intimidating, and you need to fan it out before installation, making sure the chains are not tangled. Definitely need some practice runs before the big day, so practice a few times, don't want to be out there in the snow flipping out on how these things go on. Once you get the hang of it, takes a few minutes, and your good to go. Didn't try in the snow yet, so let's see. Waiting for the white stuff. 454312

Do you have a question about this Tire Chain?

  • Can Tire Chains Be Used on All 4 Wheels
  • The linked article on tire chains does address the question of on which tires to place snow chains. This really has to do with whether the vehicle is front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or 4-wheel drive. Drive wheels are always the priority but chains on all fours tires means more consistent steering and braking, as well as acceleration. In general, all 4 wheels can be chained to provide extra stability as long as the vehicle's owner manual does not specifically prohibit this due to...

  • Tire Chain Recommendations for a 2015 Mini Countryman AWD
  • It looks like the 2015 Mini Countryman could have 1 of 3 possible stock tire sizes, 205/55-17, 225/40-19, or 225/45-18. For the 205/55-17 size the equivalent chains are # TH00204097. I have included a link to a video review of these chains for you. For the 225/40-19 tire size you can use # TH04115102. And for size 225/45-18 I recommend chains # TH00023100.
