Video Transcript for Titan Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - T4853100 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight Tongue Coupler for 2-1/2" hitch balls. It has a 21,000 pound weight capacity. This is perfect for your heavy duty towing needs. It's a rust resistant, extended length coupler, designed to be bolted onto trailer's tongue. The extended length will provide reinforcement for heavy duty towing. It has a nice zinc plating to it, which is corrosion resistant. It is a durable steel construction.

It does use the easy-to-use trigger style latch, you can see, to open it just like that. Then when you close it, it'll lock right into place. This is SAE J684 certified, and it is a bolt-on installation. This part is made in the U.S.A.Again, it's designed to fit a ball size of 2-5/16ths diameter. I happened to pull a hitch ball in that size just to show you how this would connect. You just pull your trigger latch all the way open, and you can drop that right on there.

Then if you release your trigger latch, you can see that it locks it right into place. Then to remove it, just pull open on your trigger latch, and you can take the ball right out. Again, the capacity on this is 21,000 pounds.Going to give you a few measurements on this. It is designed to fit a 3" wide channel tongue. Overall length from the edge here to the very back is 16-1/2".

The channel length section, which is here to here, is going to be right at 9-1/2". The height from the very bottom to the very top is going to be right at 4" tall. The overall width, from outside to outside, is going to be right at 3-5/8". The inside is right at about 3-1/8". On the mounting holes, the measurement center to center on the two smaller inner holes is 3".

On the two larger outer holes is 5" center to center. But that should do it for the review on the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight Tongue Coupler for 2-1/2" hitch balls, and it has a 21,000 pound weight capacity.

Excellent company, shipping, customer service, first of all! Love the new 2-5/16" hitch coupler! Now I don't have to flip the ball when going between my band equipment trailer (lead guitarist in a rock/blues/country band), and the boat!!! I only used 3 bolts since my old surge brake hitch coupler only utilized two of the 1/2" bolts. I drilled the trailer for the 3rd rear/lower 1/2" bolt using schedule 8 yellow zinc bolts and hardware. SOLID!!! etrailer.com for ALL your needs!!! I'll be converting and rebuilding the front axle brakes in the off-season. Already have the electro-hydraulic unit. 645341

Great product at a good price. Product would have gotten 5 stars if there wasn't a little area on one side where something messed up the finish (almost looks like a splotchy area that has some acid splattered on it?). Small area so I will live with it. Very nice heavy duty coupler. 324542

I am still happy I bought this heavy duty coupler, BUT one thing... It is a little hard to get it to lock down on the ball it hangs up. We have an electric jack, so we play with up and down a little, and try to move the trailer back and forth a little, and it locks down - but it is finicky. Once locked down, I have total faith that it is there to stay though! It unlocks easily every time though, so thats good.

Once again I made a purchase from etrailer and I am very happy with the merchandise. Everything I have purchased from a trailer ball to more than one set of tires for multiple trailers has been well above average. Very fast processing of my order and the delivery. The customer service is what really pushes my rating to a 5. Everyone is not only knowledgeable but great people who are always happy to help. And no, I was not paid to give this review and I am a real customer. Great company to do business with. 681258

Coupler works good and is nice and tight, so it won't rattle. It fit right up to the bolt pattern on the EZ loader trailer. Like the fact that the coupler fits over the trailer frame, instead of sitting on top. Less things to trip over, and looks better. Used this to get rid of the surge brake coupler after converting the trailer to electric over hydraulic brakes. 647122

Ask the Experts about this Titan Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler

  • Is Replacing the Surge Brake Coupler Required When Converting to EOH Brakes On a Boat Trailer
When converting from a surge braking system to an EOH system, you will want to have a fixed coupler. If you were to use the surge coupler as is without immobilizing, it can lead to rapid wear on internal parts because of the unassisted movement. Welding/bolting a surge coupler to immobilize it is not recommended either. This can damage the structural integrity of the coupler, leading to catastrophic failure. I recommend a fixed coupler like the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler...

  • Can A 5 Bolt Trailer Coupler Be Installed Using 3 Bolts
I did confirm with Titan that with this high of a capacity of coupler, the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler # T4853100 will definitely require the use of all 5 bolts. They see commonly where holes are drilled to allow for all 5 bolts to be installed if need be. That being said the Buyers Products Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler # 3370091562 is also a suitable replacement designed to use 3 bolts and provides sufficient capacity for your trailer. • Will Titan Trailer Coupler T4853100 Bolt In Place of a Model 6 Brake Actuator
First, unless the coupler that you have is not functioning properly, does not couple to the ball, or is damaged, you do not have to change it out. It will still function just fine with electric brakes. I went out to the warehouse to determine the mounting pattern of the Model 6 actuator and the coupler, # T4853100. I found that the 2 couplers do have similar mounting patterns. I have included some pictures that shows the bolt hole patterns of each for you. The regular coupler should...

I spoke with my contact at Titan and he said that the coupler was tested with all five bolts installed. He also recommended to use grade 8 bolts. The Titan Aero 7500 brake actuator, part # T4500600, has a 2-inch ball and fits a 3 inch wide channel tongue. It has a weight capacity of 7,500 lbs. In a straight bolt-on coupler with a 2 inch ball that fits a 3 inch wide channel, the coupler with the highest weight capacity would be the Titan Leverlock Coupler - Adjustable Ball, part # T4845000. • What is Typical Tongue Weight Relative to Trailer Weight
To get the best towing experience you want to have your trailer tongue weight between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight. So for a trailer that weighs 14,000 lbs ideally you'd have between 1,400 and 2,100 lbs of tongue weight. With that much weight though being closer to 10 percent would be better. If you get below 10 percent your trailer will start wanting to sway. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

  • Can Surge Brake Actuator be Left Installed with Trailer Converted to Electric Brakes
You can leave your current surge brake actuator installed on your trailer and use electric brakes. • How Tight Should the Bolts be to Secure the Titan Trailer Coupler # T4853100
There is no specific torque rating for securing the Titan coupler # T4853100. What you will need to do is tighten the bolts down as much as you can without crushing the metal of the coupler and trailer tongue. If you see the metal start to bend a little, that is tight enough. It is recommended to use all bolt holes to secure the coupler and to use grade 8 hardware.

  • Locking Titan Zinc-Plated Straight Tongue Coupler T4853100 to Hitch Ball
Yes, to secure/lock the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler # T4853100 to the hitch ball you can use a latch lock like the excellent Master Lock # 2847DAT. This will insert through the existing holes on the latch to prevent it from pulling up and unlocking from the ball. It features a 4-Pin tumbler lock that discourages picking and the stainless steel shank will resist any rust or corrosion. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
