When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4721600

Hi there. I'm Michael with Today we're going to be taking a quick look at the Titan Adjustable Channel Brake Actuator. This is going to be a hydraulic actuator that's going to allow your trailer's brakes to be applied when you are breaking in your towing vehicle. The way this works, this will mount onto your trailer. Then when you are slowing down your vehicle, obviously the momentum of the trailer will continue pushing it forward and that is going to compress this arm here.

Once that arm is compressed, it's going to activate the actuator, which will then apply the pressure to the brakes. So really it's a fail-proof system as long as your trailer is moving forward. When you stop, it's going to apply the brakes to help slow the trailer down. You are going to have the adjustable channels here for your coupler. Keep in mind the coupler is sold separately, but this will allow you to mount in the lower position, the mid position, or the high position depending on the height of your trailer to make sure that it lines up well with your ball.Because this model does not include the reverse lockout, I would highly recommend that you equip your trailer with free backing brakes. So essentially what I'm saying is when you're backing your tow vehicle up, it's going to compress this arm as if the trailer we're trying to come to a stop.

So that is going to apply the brakes. So if you're backing up, you do want to have those free brake backing brakes just to make sure that it's not going to trigger your trailer's brakes. This does include the breakaway kit. You can see the chain here. This will mount onto your towed vehicle. So if the trailer we're to come disconnected for some reason, that chain is going to continue on with your tow vehicle and this is the trailer will then slow down and it will pull on this lever here, which will then apply the brakes in your trailer.

So the trailer is not just bouncing down the road freewheeling, it will slow itself down. This is a very sturdy, durable steel construction. It's going to resist any sort of bending in a jackknife situation. It's got a zinc plating on it. So it's going to provide a nice corrosion resistance. On the other side here, you can see we do have an integrated grease zerk to keep all of our components well lubricated to make sure that they are going to move smoothly.

This does also feature a unique roller design that's going to help reduce the telescoping resistance. So as the arm moves in and out, it's going to move a lot smoother. So it's going to create a nice straight line movement to make sure that our brakes are applied when they need to be.On the backside here, we do have our hydraulic fluid reservoir. So if we pop off this cap you can see the cap of our reservoir tank and if I turn it around here you can see the reservoir itself. That's where our hydraulic fluid is going to store so that it can be sent out to our brakes to make sure that they apply correctly. This is a bolt on installation, so you can see on the bottom here, this is going to mount onto a three inch wide channel tongue. Our distance here is actually about three and a half inches, so it's going to give us plenty of room to get it mounted on that tongue and then bolt it down and pull it in tight. Our max capacity is going to be 12,500 pounds. That's the max towing weight. Our max tongue weight, which is the downward pressure on our coupler, is 1,250 pounds. So keep that in mind and make sure that it's going to work for your needs. This does come with a one year warranty from Titan, so it's going to give us a little bit of peace of mind there knowing they stand behind their products. It's going to hold up well, do a good job for us. That's going to complete our look at the Titan Adjustable Channel Brake Actuator.
