When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

The reverse lockout can be engaged with a simple lever on the coupler. Once the lockout has been activated, you can back up your trailer without triggering the trailer brakes. Always remember to disengage the lockout mechanism when preparing to move forward.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4500600 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Titan Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout. Now when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum actually pushes your trailer towards the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows, so the actuator actually telescopes which applies force to the master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes. In a nutshell, that's how this unit operates. This is a hydraulic actuator that ultimately synchronizes the trailer brakes with the tow vehicle brakes. Underneath it does feature a manual reverse lockout. That's going to let you reverse without actuating your trailer's brakes.

It's got the easy to use lever that activates lockout. Free backing brakes are not required. This is going to work with uni-servo and duo-servo brakes. Also comes with the breakaway kit, so this would attach to the tow vehicle so in the event where the tow vehicle and trailer disconnect, tow vehicle would pull on this cable, which would send the necessary signal to the actuator, which would then apply the brakes to the trailer bringing it to an eventual stop. This is a bolt-on installation. It's got three bolt holes located on each side of the unit.

The unit's made from a durable steel construction. It does feature a protective finishing over the entire unit to keep it safe from rust and corrosion. This area right here is the access area for brake fluid. It is designed for hydraulic drum brakes. It will fit a hitch ball size of 2".

It's designed to mount on the 3" wide channel tongue. The capacity for this unit is 7500 pounds with a maximum tongue weight capacity of 750 pounds. I did take a measurement of the overall length from very front to very back and got 22-3/4". I also took a measurement of the mount hole separation, so from this one to this one is right on 3", and from this one to this one, and this one to this one, measured about 2-3/4". Those mount holes have a diameter of 1/2". Now when you're ready to open up the socket area to be placed over a hitch ball, you do need to remove this pin. Just pull on it.

You take your thumb, put it on there, slide this over and lift it up. That opens it up to be placed over top of a hitch ball. To secure it, close that down, snap into place, take your pin, feed it all the way through. That's going to do it for today's look at the Titan Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout.

I really like this hitch it was easy to install works great. I gave it 4 star rating because it didn't come with the outer cap to prevent dirt around the master cylinder and the inner moving parts of the hitch. I had to order it separate from the hitch. Plus pay a separate shipping charge. The cap should be part of tbe hitch assembly 561343

Product delivery was very prompt. The product appears to be very high quality and well built. I'm disappointed there were no installation instructions included nor were there bolts included. I search the product information thoroughly before placing the order and could not find any information on the bolt size or grade. This would be an enhancement. 678699

Morning Sorry for not getting back to you all sooner but I was out of town for sometime. Now for your product and company, let me say you are one of the few that I have done business with and I have to rate your complete service from start to finish as one if not the BEST I have done business with. In fact you are so good that I am going to recommend you to all the members of the Coastside Fishing Club. Thank you for your timely and excellent service. You are the best! --- George PS : If I was to add anything to this questioner it would be there were no instructions or spec's that accompanied the produce. Although your video of the product was excellent and even a dummy like me can make the install. --- Thanks Again 136362

Review from a similar Titan Aero 7500 in Brake Actuator

We converted a tandem axle boat trailer to disk from drum. The kit worked out well with the exception of the surge hitch. The latch was flawed. When the customer pulled up the boat ramp the hitch popped off. This was after he had towed it 200 miles on the freeway, which could have been disastrous. Fortunately, no harm was done. I sent pictures to George who put me in contact with manufacturer. They were anxious to admit fault and sent a replacement. Etrailer was excellent to work with. 260093

Review from a similar Titan Aero 7500 in Brake Actuator

5 years ago I purchased a disc brake kit for my 24' boat trailer. It had the standard rusted out drum kits so I thought to make the move to disc, as I do my boating in the saltchuck. The install went super easy and it has given me great service. So, I have a new trailer that needs a full rebuild of the brakes. I started on the website, and as I was assembling my order, a couple of questions come up. So I called Customer Support. Katie was the one who answered the phone and walked me through what was needed, confirmed the differences in a couple of the components that were not explained on the website. Even tracked down one of the technical guys to explain the backup valve functionality. She then walked through the parts listing to confirm, so when it arrives, there would be no surprises or shortages. Here next step was to confirm shipping dates. She checked stock on all the parts, a couple were back ordered, so she confirmed when they were to arrive, so the 1 shipment would be complete. As I am in Canada, coordinated with the broker to get the parts to me. At the end of the call, I had the pricing, which was AWESOME, confirmation of shipping dates and contact info, if I had questions or concerns. The day she said it would arrive at the broker, it DID! She followed up with the status! Looking forward to getting the system installed next week! Thanks again for great service and having knowledgeable folks to work with! 435462

Great piece blows the old attwood for drums i had out of the water no more having to hold the tounge open to get ball to seat. Oh not to mention you can get across the trailer without killing your self and catching shorts and pants on coupler. Great upgrade for ski boat trailer! Worth the extra $. Latch is so much more secure. 479695

Review from a similar Titan Aero 7500 in Brake Actuator

I have a 2011 Lund impact 1775 on a Shorelander single axle trailer which tips the scale around 2500# dry. I felt that surge brakes would be a smart investment and take some pressure off my Ford F150 to help stop that beast. I researched kits, actuators, calipers and rotors and decided on the Kodiak caliper and rotor kit and the Titan actuator. eTrailer had both in stock, a convenient hose kit to boot and fair price so I purchased the lot from them. Delivery was very quick and all of the hardware arrived together and in good shape. It took me one afternoon to assemble the actuator on my swing \-away tongue and another to install the calipers and rotors. There was one snag with the hose kit, in that one of the hoses was incorrect. I contacted Bryan at eTrailer and he was very accommodating; rushing the correct hose to me and then following up by phone when I received it. It took about two hours to finish the installation and I couldn't be more pleased, both with the quality of the products and the first-rate service! I have yet to bleed the system and take it out for a run but I don't anticipate any issues. I fully recommend eTrailer, their products and service! 468408

I want to thank you again for your assistance in getting me the correct parts for my trailer brake installation. I took three major road trips with the boat last year and the trailer brakes worked flawlessly. The major reasons I installed the braking system were: the overall weight of the boat and trailer in relationship to my pickup 2006 F150 and braking performancesafety on wetslick roads. Both of these concerns were tested last year with wonderful results. I have been telling my friends, with similar trailer packages, to investigate your product. Thanks again,

Review from a similar Titan Aero 7500 in Brake Actuator

Have had for about a year and just installed it.When I took the cap off to put brake fluid in I found the master cylinder about 1/2 full of water.Hitch assy .was stored in my garage until last week when I installed it.Cylinder bound up with rust.Since I did not check unit when I received it I am going to take the blame--I should have checked it out immediately after receipt. I ordered new cylinder and during the installation process I found the fitting in the end or the defective cylinder was for one for drum brakes(small hole in it).Makes me think someone put this defective cylinder in before it was shipped to me---but can't prove that either. I have the same hitch on another trailer I have had for several years and really like it.Has manual lock out + the solenoid for electrical lock out.Love the way it locks down on the ball. Lesson learned--inspect everything immediately upon receipt-especially pull the caps and look in the cylinders-check everything twice--cost me a second cylinder --won't happen again. 392573

Great product. I replaced my old, ineffective drum brakes with new disk brakes and a new coupler / actuator. Much more effective braking on my trailer now. Well worth the cost and effort to possibly save an accident with the crummy old drum brakes. Even better than the great product is the fantastic service from eTrailer support. I had several questions that they helped me through. They even pulled a caliper from their stock so they could see exactly what I was asking about and helped me resolve the issue. Always prompt, courteous and thorough. I never felt like they were hurrying to get me off the phone. Thanks eTrailer! 308465

We can[t get the bolts out to work the hinge. We've applied a tension release oil and hammered away -- but still too tight. Other than that it seems like a big improvement over the previous actuator/coupler. 202527

After a little hiccup in my online order due to manufacturer availability, Mark with Etrailer did a great job in getting me a different, but still acceptable, replacement kit. Just finished swapping the drum brake actuator on my Karavan Trailer for a Titan disc brake actuator. Process has been more time consuming than I had hoped, but things are coming together. The Titan actuator appears well made and etrailer has provided excellent support when I needed a few extras. Only rated 4 stars because packaging was insufficient to prevent some nylon friction washers from being damaged in shipping. Overall very satisfied and I will go to etrailer first for my future trailer needs. 436462

The kit was fairly strait forward, but the included instructions are not complete. There was nothing for the installation of the hubs, rotors, bearings, or calipers. Customer service was able to email me some generic instructions that helped. etrailer's customer service is excellent, when I discovered some bolts missing from the box and had no time to wait for replacements to be shipped out Anna from etrailer made sure that I got refunded the cost of the bolts. I am very satisfied with the service I received and will defiantly be doing business with etrailer again! 170384

Ask the Experts about this Titan Brake Actuator

Do you have a question about this Brake Actuator?

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 82541
  • It sounds like you have free backing braking assemblies on your trailer so a lockout at the trailer coupler is not needed. In order to replace the Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 82541, I recommend using the Titan Leverlock Brake Actuator part # T43329007K although the Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout part # T4500600 would work as well. The Leverlock is more cost effective and has an easier to use latching mechanism in my opinion. The mounting bolt holes on the Leverlock are 3" apart...

  • Replacement for Mastercraft Boat Trailer Reliable Model ACT-6k Disc Brake Compatible Surge Coupler
  • For your 2003 MasterCraft trailer, the replacement surge brake actuating coupler you need is the Titan Swing-Away Actuator w/ Electric Lockout # T4839100 based on what I can find online. This coupler is designed for disc brakes and has a capacity of up to 7,500 lbs. It is a bolt on assembly for a 2 inch hitch ball. I've attached a video review of this coupler and it mounts to 3 inch wide channel tongues. If you have a 3x3 inch channel, you will need two spacers # T4842100, and if...

  • What is the Difference Between a Manual Lockout and No Lockout Brake Actuator
  • A brake actuator with a manual lockout, like part # T4500600, will have a lockout lever on the actuator that prevents the internal spring and shock from engaging the master cylinder when backing up (see photo). A no lockout brake actuator, like part # 8605001, does not have this feature, so the trailer would either need free-backing brakes or an electric lockout solenoid like part # DM11993 to keep the brakes from locking up while in reverse. Backing up a trailer with hydraulic surge...

If you are having problems with your brakes dragging and overheating then either your disc brakes/caliper need to be cleaned, your breakaway cable has been activated, or the internal components of your actuator are needing replacement. If you check your brakes/calipers and breakaway cable isn't activated then the only internal components...

There are 2 different types of lockouts; manual and electric. A manual lockout is what part # T4500600 has and you can see how it is operated in the attached review video. • The Atwood MPD 85778 is not actually a model number for their actuator, it is a literature number - basically a manual number so I wouldn't be able to tell you what a direct replacement would be. You will need to match your actuator to either drum or disc brakes, the weight capacity, coupler size and what size tongue it bolts onto. For example, if you had disc brakes, a 3" wide channel tongue, needed a 7,000 lb capacity and had either a 1-7/8", 2" or 50-mm hitch ball a great option...

  • Does Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator 8605001 Have a Reverse Lockout Feature
  • Titan brake actuator # T4500600 does have a manual reverse lockout feature to let you back up the trailer without the brakes engaging. The lockout device can be seen in the linked review video at the 40-second mark. The other actuator coupler you mentioned, Demco coupler # 8605001 does NOT have any type of reverse lockout feature, neither a manual one like the Titan nor an electric type. Backing up a trailer that has a hydraulic surge coupler with no lockout will require free-backing...

  • What are the Dimensions of the Titan Aero 7500 Brake Actuator With Manual Lockout # T4500600
  • In the picture I have attached you will see the dimensions of the Titan Aero 7500 Brake Actuator # T4500600 noted has an overall length of 20 inches. You mentioned that your trailer tongue is 3-1/4 inches wide - the standard width of a trailer tongue is 3 inches, so this (and industry standard) actuators have an inside width dimension of 3-1/8 inches to fit on the tongue. The outside dimension of the actuator is 3-1/2 inches. You may want to verify the width of your trailer - if it...

  • Locking out a Titan Model 60 actuator like the part # T4500600 that you referenced requires inserting the lock out tool into the into the slot right behind the portion of the coupler that inserts into the outer casing. I pointed out where in the attached picture. The second picture shows the tool.

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator Replacement for Drum Brakes
  • Most actuators are made to fit a 3 inch wide channel tongue, so if you have something other than that, let me know and I'll look into possible fits. If you have a 3 inch wide channel, then I recommend the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator - Drum - 2-5/16" Ball - Bolt On - 8,000 lbs # T4079200. Based on the photo, I believe this will be the best fit for your mounting holes.

  • Recommended Replacement Surge Coupler for ATWOOD 82541 and Brake Assemblies
  • The Atwood 82541 you referenced was discontinued a while back. The replacement I recommend is the Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout - Bolt On - Drum - 2" Ball - 7,500 lbs # T4500600. Then for your EZLoader drum brakes I recommend the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - Dacromet # AKUBRK-35-D if you have 10 inch drums or the Hydraulic Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - Free Backing # AKFBBRK-7 for 12 inch drums.

  • Troubleshooting Dico Aero 6000 Surge Brake Actuator that Clunks and Brakes Get Hot
  • Most likely it's just the shock since you described clunking and the brakes not fully releasing as that's a textbook symptom of a bad surge brake shock. Since you have a Dico Aero 6000 actuator the correct replacement shock would then be the part # T4502000. If you do determine it's the master cylinder or you just want to replace it now while you have it apart you'd want the part # T4395100 for if you have drum brakes or part # T4714200042 for if you have disc.

  • Replacement Master Cylinder Kit for Titan Aero 7500 Brake Actuator
  • There are replacement master cylinder kits available for your Titan Aero 7500 brake actuator, and the correct one will depend on if your actuator was for drum brakes or disc brakes. For drum brakes you need the Replacement Master Cylinder Assembly for Titan Model 60 and Aero 7500 Brake Actuators - Drum # T4395100. For disc brakes you need the Replacement Master Cylinder Kit for Titan Aero 7500 - Disc Brakes T4875700.

  • Titan Surge Brake Actuator T4500600 With Manual Reverse Lockout Operation
  • The Brake Actuator with Manual Lockout - Bolt On - Drum - 2" Ball - 7,500 lbs # T4500600 you referenced does have the lever for manual lockout. This lever keeps the hitch ball from putting pressure on the master cylinder plunger when installed. If it seems to do nothing uninstalled, that is because it doesn't have the force of the hitch ball pushing back into it or the hydraulic pressure on the other end to displace. The manual lockout should not be difficult to engage and should only...
