When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4339720 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're talking a look at the Titan zinc plated brake actuator. This hydraulic actuator synchronizes your trailer brakes with your towed vehicle brakes. It easily adjusts to fit different hitch ball sizes so you can turn the hand wheel right here to tighten the coupler around your ball so it'll fit a one and seven eighth inch ball, a two inch ball, and 50 millimeter hitch balls. The cable that has the hook on it. This is the break away kit. So basically what happens is you would attach this to a connection point on the tow vehicle. In any event where the trailer and tow vehicle disconnect, if that we're to ever happen, the vehicle would pull on this cable.

It would pull on this latch right here, and then that would activate the trailers brakes, bringing it to a safe eventual stop. We're looking at a durable steel construction. And then we have a nice zinc plated finish on the whole unit, which is designed to resist rust and corrosion. And it is a bolt on installation, so you got two bolt holes right here, separated apart by three inches on center. Same thing right here. And this is designed for three inch wide channel tongues. So bolt on installation to three inch wide channel tongues. It also features the electric reverse lock out which lets you back up easily.

Again, it is designed for hydraulic drum brakes. Some adjustment may be required to fit those different size hitch balls that I talked about, and again you can do all of that with a simple turn of the hand wheel right here. Then when it comes to the capacity located right here on top, it has the capacities engraved in it, and it says 7,000 pound max capacity, and 700 pound maximum tongue weight capacity. This cap on top in the cap for the brake fluid reservoir, and then on the backside we have the shield or guard right here, and that protects the connection point, so it protects the connection point for the hydraulic line, and then you have you're two wire design because this is an electric actuator so hook up that way as well. It's really nice. Easy to install. Easy to use. And again, we are looking at a nice corrosion resistant design with this system. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Titan zinc plated brake actuator..

Bought this hitch as a replacement for my worn out original which had a manual lockout. Decided to replace with an electric lockout for backing up. Hitch was installed and brakes bled within about 3 hrs. Hooking solenoid wiring up to backup light wiring was easy. Very satisfied; great improvement! 474473

just got it yesterday will be putting on tomorrow.very fast delivery service have to change my hydrulac line but no big deal electric lock out is longer than my old one but good quality 67274

The hitch is almost identical to the one that it is replacing which gave 20 years of service. I have not actually used this one yet, but I'm sure that it will work very well. The delivery surprised me with it's speed. 323352

I gave it a lower rating due to a disc brake sticker being on the item. I have a drum set up. After I spent considerable time looking for a fitting to hook it up, also had to consult Titan the manufacture on the status of the brake actuator that it had. eTrailer was more than helpful each time I contacted them. Hav'ent got it hooked up as yet. but the design is more efficient than the Atwood I replaced. eTrailer info I've received was right on target and very helpful. 192378

Mine shipped with a defective backup solenoid. Took longer than 30 days to get it mounted and tested. Now etrailer wants me to pay return shipping and process the replacement as a warantee claim. Not able to wait that long. So I'll purchase a replacement from another supplier. Bye bye etrailer. It's been nice. But, it's evident I'm unappreciated and you no longer need me. BTW: anyone seeing this, it's a good coupler (i have 3 of them). But make certain you get it installed pronto because these guys are not gonna cut you any slack. 231941

I had an Atwood that fell apart and was difficult to connect. I ordered this one as a replacement. The connection process to the ball is much easier and the unit itself seems very solid; your website and information was great. The problem I ran into was that the connection to the Atwood master cylinder was very different and I had a hard time finding parts to make the brake line fit. Still in the process of trying to make it work. So far I've been unable to get brake fluid through the lines using the manual method. I also like your message on the top of the box " the bottom of this box should not be the end of our relationship" nice touch! Over all your website has been awesome! I guess I'm gong to have to take it in to someone to get the brakes to function. -Russell 148463

No issues with the install, well built and easy to bleed using an air compressor bleed system. Decent braking power. 461068

Very satisfied with the product and timely delivery. Only concern was due to the nature of the product, a galvanized steel trailer coupler, it poked out of the cardboard box it was shipped in. Of course the heavy galvanized coupler was not damaged, but other people's packages could have been damaged by my coupler during shipping. Tell the crew down at the shipping department to be sure to wrap up those protruding edges. 566289

Do you have a question about this Brake Actuator?

  • Replacement for Atwood 82543 Surge Brake Actuator
  • The closest option we have to replace your Atwood 82543 actuator is part # 8605001, which is the item you referenced. However, this actuator doesn't have the lockout like your Atwood does. For one with a lockout use # T4339720 but it's an electric lockout. It wires into the reverse lights on your vehicle via the circuit on your trailer connector.

  • How To Determine If Your Trailer Has Free-Backing Brake Assemblies When Replacing a Surge Coupler
  • To find out if you have free backing brakes, there are really only two ways I can think of to test. First, if your coupler works, you can push your surge coupler to move your trailer in reverse. If the brakes apply, then you know you do not have free backing brakes. If you can move it easily, then your brakes are free backing. If your coupler is broken and thus the reason you are replacing then you will need to go to the second testing option. You will need to pull one of your hubs...

  • Lock Actuating Coupler On Trailer To Truck
  • For your trailer with adjustable ball # T4339720 to be locked to your truck while boating, I recommend the HITCH-LOCK Trailer Guard Coupler Lock by Dutton-Lainson # DL13980 along with the Master Lock Shrouded Padlock # 37DAT. This will work as long as you have a hitch lock on your ball mount like # 5201 so they can't just use your ball mount to take the locked trailer.

  • 4-Pole Wiring Harness for 2017 Honda Pilot and 5-Pole Adapter for Trailer with Surge Coupler
  • We do offer 4-pole trailer wiring kits for the 2017 Honda Pilot, shown on the linked page, such as # 118760. This is the kit I recommend since we find Tekonsha wiring products to be very reliable. 4-pole type trailer wiring carries three lighting circuits (plus a ground, on the 4th pin) but does not carry any other type of trailer signals such as power for electric trailer brakes. The circuits on a 4-pole are for running lights (brown wire), left turn/stop lights (yellow wire) and right...

  • Integrated Brake Controller, Hydraulic Brakes and Trailer Wiring for Boat Trailer
  • If your boat trailer has a mechanical surge actuator coupler like # 8605001 then no trailer brake controller is required. The inertia of the trailer moving forward provides the compression to push hydraulic fluid to the brakes. If on the other hand you have an EOH system, electric-over-hydraulic, such as with an actuator like # HBA-12 for drum brakes or # HBA16 for disc brakes, then you DO still need a trailer brake controller to deliver the electrical signals to the actuator, which...

If you need an actuator as well, you can use the HydraStar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HS381-9065 if you have electric over hydraulic brakes. • How Does Reverse Lock Out Solenoid of Titan Surge Actuator part # T4339720 Wire to Trailer
  • Wiring up the reverse lockout solenoid of your Titan actuator part # T4339720 is pretty simple but I apologize there weren't any included instructions. Basically either wire gets ran to the reverse light circuit and the other wire gets grounded to the trailer frame. It does not matter which wire gets used as they are not polarity sensitive.

  • Replacement Hydraulic Brakes for 3500-lb Axle on Boat Trailer

We have both electric and hydraulic drums brake kits for 3500-lb axles and since you referenced a surge coupler # T4339720 I will be happy to recommend appropriate hydraulic brakes. For a cost-effective set of left/right brakes you can use part # AKUBRK-35. You'll need one kit for each axle on the trailer. These 10-inch brakes will work...

The Atwood is a weld-on coupler that fits a 3" straight tongue rated for 8,000 lbs and the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # T4339720 you referenced has a 7,000 lb capacity and also fits that tongue width so you'd be good to go.

  • Can a Bolt-On Surge Brake Actuator Replace a Weld-On Surge Brake Actuator
  • Yes, you can replace a weld-on surge brake actuator with a bolt-on surge brake actuator and you can weld a bolt-on surge brake actuator to the trailer. If you are handy with a welder and have one available then I prefer this method over the other as you never have to worry about a nut backing off or drilling holes into the frame. If you can provide me with some more info on your trailer then I would be happy to recommend a surge brake actuator for you but if not I have attached our...

  • Recommended Brake Actuator With Lock Out for 7000 LBS. Boat Trailer
  • The standard tongue weight on a trailer is approximately 10-15 percent of the GTW. On a boat trailer it generally stays at 10 percent because most of the weight of a boat is towards the back end of the trailer, reducing the need for more tongue weight. This is why all of our couplers have a tongue weight of 10 percent of the GTW. If you'd like to be more definite in your tongue weight, you can always use a scale like the Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale # 5780. The Titan Zinc-Plated...

  • Titan 7000 lb Hydraulic Actuator Versus Atwood Model
