Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - DL23870 Review

Today were going to take a quick look at the Dutton Lainson bolt on trailer Coupler for one and seven eighths inch trailer balls part number dl23870. Again this couplers designed to work with one and seven eighth inch trailer balls. It finished with a zinc plating to help prevent against corrosion. It has a 2,000 pound weight capacity and a 200 pound tongue weight capacity. Its designed to fit with trailer frames that are two inches wide. So well take a quick inside width measurement and well get our two inches.

Overall the coupler has a length of about nine inches. Now its a bolt on unit so theres a pair of bolt holes on either side of the coupler so you can bolt it directly to the frame of your trailer. Theres a chain here and on the end of the chain lanyard youll find a clip that you can insert into this hole to keep the latch from coming open while trailering down the road. You can also use the coupler lock for added security for your trailer either while youre out and about or while you have it in storage. Now were going to show you how the latch system works.

Its a trigger latch where youll have to pull this trigger in order to pull the release out and then you can flip the latch open. As you close the latch the trigger will re-engage and keep the latch from coming open until you pull the trigger. Well take a quick look at the action from the underside. Heres the wedge thats going to secure around the back of the ball. Theres also a nut here that you can loosen or tighten in order to adjust the fit against the trailer ball.

Well pull our latch open and the wedge drops out and back away from the ball. Now we have a one and seven eighths inch ball with us. So well fit it into the coupler and close our latch. The wedge then secures around the back of the ball and provides a good snug fit around the trailer ball to make sure your trailer stays engaged. As we release the latch again the wedge drops open and the ball is free.

Thats it for a quick look at the Dutton Lainson bolt on trailer Coupler part number dl23870.

Bought as a backup.

Fit the tongue, works great,

Only place on the web that I found what I needed! Exact replacement parts for a 40 year old out of production boat trailer, and OEM to boot! Not to mention a fair price.

Part was correct and shipped quickly!

Good fit bolted up easily. Had to adjust locking mechanism to lock onto ball but now goes on and off good.

as always item fit great and works great! I will only buy from etrailer

I have had this coupler on my trailer for just over a year now and it is still working great!! its on a older boat trailer that goes out 2 or 3 times a week. thanks again etrailer

I am in the process of having it put on my trailer. It is what I was looking for. I like the fact that it has a pin with it so I don't have to find a nut and bolt.

Very nice part at a good price. Bought one at Tractor Supply and had to return it for poor quality and fit. I'll alway use E trailer first. Always best prices on quality parts.

I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I received the coupler I ordered. The quality was great, much better than I could find locally. I was happy to purchase an item made in the US.
The customer service was friendly and efficient. Shipping to Hawaii was very reasonable. I couldn't be more pleased with wreak or and recommend them highly!

You are a life saver. We have looked all over for a coupler that would line up with the holes in the boat trailer. Thank you so much for your great customer service agents too! Ricky went out his way to get me an extra measurement that wasn't online prior to ordering the part. Very grateful.

Great prices and service was over the top. I was expecting the shipment to take a week or two to get and in 3 days it was at my door. thanks etrailer

Excellent product good instructions fast delivery

The product is usable, but has problems. Takes a while to get it to set on the ball. Would not recommend this product as user friendly.

Prompt shipping and item arrived as described. I have already made another purchase. Would recommend to others.

great product. replaced one I had with this new one. It went on very easy and fit perfect. It was a really good price and very fast and cheap shipping.

Received my new coupler and tires, speedy service and very good product descriptions online helped making purchase decisions. 5 stars

very satisfied with quick delivery. thank you for speeded service.

No Complaints. Looks to be good quality.

Coupler functions properly, and the fit is perfect. Holes match up perfectly with the pre-existing holes in the tongue.

  • Dimensions of the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Coupler for 1-7/8 inch Trailer Ball # DL23870
On the Dutton Lainson # DL23870 1-7/8 coupler, the first measurement that you requested from the top of the inside of the coupler to the outer edge of the base of the coupler is 2 inches. The mounting holes on the side of the of the coupler are 3/4 of an inch from the base of the coupler and the diameter of the mounting holes is 13/32. I have included a couple of dimensional diagrams for your reference. This coupler is designed to be used on trailer tongues that are 2 inches wide. It...

  • Hitch Coupler Repair Kit and Replacement Coupler for Harbor Freight Trailer
We do offer coupler repair kits for many of the top brands of couplers like Titan, Dico, Demco and others but the unit supplied on your Harbor Freight trailer is typically going to be a bargain type that may not have repair parts available. That is one reason such trailers often cost less. If you can find a brand name and/or part number on the coupler that may help us find out if one of our repair kits could work. If you prefer to simply bolt-on a new coupler we can help with that. Please...

  • Recommended Trailer Coupler for 2 Inch Wide Channel Tongue Trailer w/ 2-1/2 Inch Bolt Spacing
We sure can! We have exactly what you're looking for. The Dutton-Lainson # DL23870 is for a 1-7/8 inch ball, is compatible with a 2 inch channel tongue and has mounting bolt hole spacing of 2-1/2 inches, measured center on center. The coupler has a 2000 lb capacity. I've provided a photo of the coupler showing the relevant dimensions.

  • Pole Tongue Coupler Recommendation that Has Mounting Holes that are 2-1/2 inches Apart
The Dutton-Lainson # DL23870 is for a 1-7/8 inch ball, is compatible with a 2 inch channel tongue and has mounting bolt hole spacing of 2-1/2 inches, measured center on center. The coupler has a 2000 lb capacity. This might be your better option as long as you can get by with the lower 2,000 lb capacity and smaller ball size. Otherwise I'd recommend welding the part # DL13847 instead of redrilling any holes.

  • American Made Straight Tongue Coupler Availability
For a coupler designed to fit a 2-1/2 inch straight tongue and a 2 inch hitch ball that is made in America you would want the Trailer Coupler part # DL13847. Check out the review video I attached for more info. If you have 2 inch channel instead you would want the part # DL23870. Not all of our couplers are made in America, but the Dutton Lainson ones are.

  • Is Mounting Hole Spacing the Same Between 1-7/8 and 2 Couplers for 2 Inch Tongues
All of the 2 inch ball couplers that fit a 2 inch channel such as # F222000301 have a hole spacing of approximately 3 inches on center (front to back). The 1-7/8 inch coupler # DL23870 has a hole spacing of 2-1/2 inches. If you go to a 2 inch ball coupler you will have to drill at least 1 new hole through the tongue.

  • Recommended 360 Degree Swivel for Motorcycle Trailer
What you are looking for is referred to as a swivel hitch. We don't have anything like it, but if you are interested in making one, I recommend the coupler # DL23870 and then using the Receiver Adapter for Blue Ox Allure Tow Bar - 2" x 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # BX88249 for your swivel. This will give you compatible parts to allow you to connect your trailer and have the movement you are seeking.

  • Straight Tongue Coupler for 2 Inch Channel With Mounting Holes 2-1/2 Inches Apart
We do have one coupler that fits a 2 inch channel with mounting holes that are spaced 2-1/2 inches apart, the Dutton-Lainson Coupler # DL23870. The holes are also about 3/4 inch from the bottom of the coupler. This coupler accepts a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball and has a 2,000 lb capacity. If you need a lock I recommend the etrailer Trailer Coupler Lock # e98893. I have added a link to a video review I recommend checking out as well of the Dutton-Lainson Coupler # DL23870.

Instead of drilling holes in the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-2001-Z it will be a much more secure fit to simply use Coupler # DL23870, which has mounting holes spaced 2-1/2 inches apart on center. This coupler fits a 2 inch wide channel, works with a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball, has a 2,000 lb capacity and 200 lb tongue weight capacity. I have added a link to a video review of this coupler for you to check out as well.

All the channel tongue couplers we offer are fits for a 3 inch channel, but I do have a solution. You could use the Demco # DM13203-95 channel tongue coupler, and shim each side of the channel tongue out using some 1/2 inch steel plate. This would be an acceptable solution.

  • Option For 1-7/8 Inch Coupler For 2 Inch Channel For Swivel Safe Hitch
We may have an option for a coupler that works, but we don't offer the Swivel Safe brand, so we don't have any fits we can confirm. So the best I can offer are dimensions of our couplers that fit a 2" channel and attach to a 1-7/8" hitch ball. We have three possible options for that. For a coupler that has mounting holes that are 3/8" diameter and spaced 2-1/4" apart, there are two options: - Fulton Fas-Lok Coupler # E112000340 - Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-2001-Z The other...

I would need to know the model and/or manufacturer of the coupler. The issue is that the repair kits are not universal so I cannot guarantee that what we have will fit. The one thing that will work is to replace the coupler. Since you mentioned that the trailer is an A-frame but the channel is 2 inches wide I assume that the coupler is mounted to a single pole at the front of the A-frame.
