When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

eZ-Latch Coupler

The coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the eZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc coating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This zinc coat has a 200-hour salt spray rating. Even the master cylinder is made of rustproof aluminum to further ensure durability.

Video Transcript for Demco Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DM8204311 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco Hydraulic Disbrake Actuator with the 4 inch drop and the electric lockout. It has a 20,000 pound weight capacity. This hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brake when the tow vehicle slows or stops. If you notice right up front where the coupler is, it has a 4 inch drop, which will help you match your tow vehicle height. On the very back of it, you can see as I spin this around, right back here there's an electric reverse lockout solenoid which will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. It's installed into the master cylinder.

This electric solenoid will activate automatically when you shift into reverse. If you notice it has 2 wires right here, there are 2 black wires, and one is connected to the ground. The other goes to the reverse light circuit and because they're both black, it doesn't matter which one's which. As I mentioned, it is screwed into a heavy duty aluminum master cylinder, which is very durable and rust proof and efficient. That master cylinder is built for high pressure application, involves 50% greater displacement than your standard master cylinder. On the front where the drop is, the couplers at, it uses an easy latch coupler mechanism for simple secure hookup and disconnect.

This will let you hookup when the latch is in the closed position like it is now. Basically you just drop the coupler over the hitch ball and the latch will snap into place. This is designed to fit onto 2 and 5/16th hitch ball, so I'm going to try and show you here. Here's an example of a 2 and 5/16th hitch ball. You can see I'm going to push up on the hitch ball, so actually you'll be dropping the coupler on the hitch ball.

You can see as you drop it down, just by pushing it up you can see how it automatically locked it into place, and just lift up on the lock and it'll release it. It's an easy release mechanism. Now this whole actuator is zinc plated to give you corrosion resistance, has a 200 hour salt spray rating. On the inside, it does use an acetone co-polymer lining and that allows it to provide smooth operation as this actuator will telescope in and out. The breakaway you can see right here at the top is included. You notice on this side, it has a nice snap-in hook on the safety cable.

This will ensure a secure connection to the breakaway lever. It is a durable, steel construction. It has a nice, sturdy re-enforced outer casing. It is a bolt-on installation. Right underneath here you can see the part where you install it. It is a 5-hole case, which is universal, has 5 mounting holes on each side of the actuator. It does require 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch grade 5 bolts when you do mount this. They are not included. You would have to purchase those separately. This part is made in the USA. A few specs on this again, the application this is for trailers with hydrochloric disk brakes. The ball size this coupler fits on is 2 and 5/16ths diameter. The drop I had mentioned can be measured from the top to right here, it's going to be right at 4 inch drop. Gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. Max and tongue weight is 2,000 pounds. This is designed to fit on a straight 3 inch wide trailer tongue, and it also goes by the model number of DA20. That should do it for the review on the Demco Hydraulic Disbrake Actuator with the 4 inch drop and the electric lockout and a 20,000 pound weight capacity.
