This is a great system for holding your spare tire. Keep in mind that it only fits angle iron up to 2 inches on each dimension. My trailer has 2x3 inch angle iron, so I had to drill a hole through the vertical part of the angle iron to mount the carrier. Still, it's great to have my spare up and out of the way.

by:

Works great low profile spare was inside the edge of the fender I did put stronger mounting screws for my peace of mind but it would work with parts included.

by:

HI, this solution is great, wasn't perfect for my installation, but as close as you can get! First of all my rails are 3"X2" so they were too wide to put the bolt and square washer on to hold. I drilled a hold and mounted it center on a downward angle iron, no issue. It's just a more solid mount now. Then the tire when mounted was rubbing on the top rail. Soooo I put a lock washer and an M12 nylon bolt to hold the tire mount bolts on. This added about 2MM of space out from the mount so the tire would not rub on the rail. Very happy with this solid solution. Additionally the weld on the mount is slightly not square. You can see this by the tire gaps front to rear. It is slightly skewed but not a problem. Hope this helps anyone else with wide rails. Enjoy! And thanks!

by:

Quick and easy installation. A really nice, no welding, solution to providing the ability to carry a spare trailer tire.

Comments
Quick and Easy install. Mount ensures you will have the spare tire available without taking up room in the bed of the truck.

Does not fit the rim well. Inlue of returning I had to add multiple washers to tighten it up. Hard to explain but it was the 'pinching' of the center hub and rim that had too much space on the shaft. It works with washers now, but looks like a hack. Perhaps the tire size is too small.

Had to get a little creative with the final mount (drill bottom hole instead of clamp), but overall a great design. Hard to find anywhere else - once again, well thought out for angles and channels.

by:

Ideal spare tire carrier for a utility trailer with angle iron side rails. Easy installation and adjustable for any bolt pattern rim.

Comments
The only thing I would say is that I added a piece of 2 by 4 between the uprights on the trailer to eliminate the vibration for the cantilever design of the bracket. Problem solved.

by:

This spare tire carrier is perfect for installation on angle-iron railed utility trailers. The product was delivered on time and the directions were easy to follow. The entire installation took about 15 minutes.

I installed the device behind my trailer axle to add a little weight to the back end. This reduced the tongue weight for manual lifting and maneuvering of the empty trailer.

by:

Well, the spare tire carrier was on backorder for 4 months, but it was worth the wait. Easy to install. No problem meeting the 50 lbs. torque required as some reported. With the exception of a trailer tongue box which I have yet to purchase, this was the last element for this remodel of my father's 20 year old trailer.

by:

The carrier works well. My only comment is the angle at which is sits on the trailer frame (does not sit true). I doubt it will come loose or fall off; it's just the aesthetic of the way it looks (canted at about 15 degrees).

by:

Only good option for angle iron frames. 15 minute job.

Comments
Good kit. There’s no better spare mounting option for angle iron trailers. Spare will jiggle a bit, but this is due to trailer construction. Make sure to mount as close to an upright as possible. Check bolt torque before a long drive. The video is comprehensive and much recommended. l

Perfect solution for angle iron mounting on my utility trailer. Was able to locate it directly above vertical upart of railing which gives it more stability. Fits my 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, should be listed in the description. Only reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars is no way provided to keep wheel mounting bolts from falling out or moving around when trying to mount wheel, plus need for two wrenches to tighten the wheel nuts. I bought a couple of 7/16” lock washers with the teeth in them that thread on the bolts to keep bolts in and help keep them adjusted to correct width. Haven’t pulled trailer anywhere yet so don’t know how well everything will hold up.

by:

Easy installation (4) bolts is all...and (2) of them are what holds the tire on. Solid carrier.

by:

My review will be in two parts.

Firstly,
from the time I placed the order to the date I received the product was not days, nor weeks, but instead months. I understand eTrailer is totally dependent on its suppliers to manufacture in a timely manner. But whoever the company is that makes this product does not keep up with their production in a responsibly timely fashion.

Secondly, it’s very unlikely I’ll choose to keep this spare tire carrier. Here’s why. Once I secured the product to my single axel utility trailers angle iron railing, ensuring all provided bolts were securely tightened and the tire was mounted correctly, there was considerable wobble of the tire. The failure of this spare tire carrier bracket is it does not have any vertical support below the angle iron railing to properly prevent and better stabilize the tire. There’s little doubt that over time either the angle iron railing or the carrier bracket itself, or both, will fatigue and probably fail.

Comments
You mentioned that there was wobble in the carrier after it was installed. I do have a few suggestions to help keep spare tire carrier tightened to trailer. One is to make sure that the bolt is torqued to manufacturers specs and second, is to position spare tire carrier next to brace on trailer.

by:

The parts arrived sooner than expected. Material is very solid and the well made. Excellent product as always from etrailer. You can buy with confidence.

by:

The spare tire and bracket fell off my trailer after it was installed on my trailer. The idea is great but it does not work all I found was the broken bolts on my trailer after I arrived to my destination. The bolts broke off I had to buy a new spare tire.

Comments
I would check your bolts every once and awhile to ensure the torque is in spec. Our engineer also recommends to put the spare tire carrier near a brace of the trailer.

by:

This was an excellent fit for my trailer, easy installation, received it within 7 days of ordering. I added an extra 1" 5/16 stainless carriage bolt on the lower mount, the wheel mounting studs where a little long for me, I purchased 2 shorter carriage bolts so my 4 way lug wrench would work without having to use a socket with rachet. I suggest using blue loctite on lower mount bolts, but not on the lug nuts.

by:

Installed the tire mount today. This mount was very easy to install, no modifications needed to fit the angle iron on my trailer. It feels very secure! One suggestion would be to include in the kit two retention clips for the tire mount bolts. Well built, excellent design, compact!!

by:

I did have difficulty with the rail
mounted spare tire holder. Two bolts hold it to the angle iron trailer frame, one considerably smaller than the other. Concerned about what the result could be if it came loose, I overtightened the smaller one and broke it into 2 pieces even though I was only using a short handle wrench. The local hardware store had a replacement for less than $1 and I have more confidence than I did with the original smaller bolt.

Comments
A helpful tip, the spare tire carrier is designed to mount next to the trailer brace to give it more stability.
-- Etrailer Expert Thomas M - 01/05/2022

by:

Not perfect but pretty good. Leans out a bit. Bolts had to have thread lock added.

by:

I drilled and tapped an 8"X3"X1/4" flat bar. I used 2" grade 8 1/2-20 bolts and lug nuts. Having ridged studs makes mounting the spare much easier.

by:

Part work great for angle iron rails.

by:

It’s fits, easy to install, my spare tire and wheel love to come along!

by:

The mount was exactly what I wanted and needed. Took less than 15 minutes to install, excellent instructions.

by:

Made for an easy install of my spare tire, considering adding a second one. Have been using it for over a year.

  • Recommended Solution for Tire Carrier on Hudson Trailer with 6" Tall Channel Frame
It sounds like this trailer has a 6" tall frame, which presents an issue since almost all of the spare tire carriers we have available are designed to fit on trailer frames no more than 5" tall, however I may have a solution that will work for you. After looking up the style of trailer that Hudson typically made (deckover with channel frame), it appears that something like the etrailer Spare Tire Carrier for Trailer with Angle-Iron Railing - Clamp On # e99045 might work for you. The etrailer Spare Tire Carrier # e99045 is referring to the bolt hole pattern of the wheel. 4 on 4 is a 4 lug wheel with 4" measured from the center of lug to the center of the opposite wheel lug. 5 on 5 is a 5 lug wheel with 5" measured from the center of lug to the center the imaginary circle line created on the hub.
