Video Transcript for MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Maxxtow spare tire carrier. This has been designed for use with trailers up to a 3 inch by 5 inch frame. Part number is MT70214. This spare tire carrier is designed to give us plenty of room and still be able to take our tire along with us. With the offset design, it elevates the tire slightly. That gives us better clearance on the underside so we don't have to worry it bumping into the ground or anything like that, especially on these shorter boat style trailers. Now not only is that offset going to give us a little more height on our spare, but as you can see rather than the type that bolts right around the frame right here and just holds the tire up against it, it also gives up space and gets it out further and away from our trailer.

That's going to help us out a lot when it comes time to load and unload. Now the carrier's been designed to work with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern, which means you would have four holes in your wheel lug. You're going to measure from the outside edge of one of your holes to the center of the other one. If that, from this edge here to the middle is 4 1/2, this is going to work out well for you. If this is 4 3/4, you need to choose a different option. Now for the 5 on 4 3/4 bolt patterns we recommend part number CE27310G.

Now this carrier is designed to work in a lot of different applications, utility trailers, small campers, boats, so you need something that is going to hold up and be sturdy for quite a while. And to help make sure it lasts in all of those conditions for a very long time, all this steel has a nice thick black powder coat finish on it. And all of our hardware has the zinc finish so we won't have to worry about corrosion. From the back of our mounting plate here to the front here, we've got about six inch offset, so it's going to give us that kind of spacing away from our trailer to provide the room. Now the lugs that are going to come with the spare tire carrier are going to be 3/4 inch or 19 millimeter lugs.If that doesn't match what you currently have on your trailer you can buy these with the same size shake and thread pitch to match the ones you have so you only have to carry one lug wrench. Now the carrier is designed to support up to 100 pounds, but with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern, or for that matter, the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern, you're probably not going to get close to that.

Now the carrier gives us a lot of options as far as mounting go. These are going to be our upper two holes. You can see those here and here. And then we've got four holes on the bottom. That's what helps us to get all the way up to that 5 inch frame. You're going to choose the holes that you're going to use, based on your trailer's needs.

So we can either use this top hole or this top hole. This is a 4 inch trailer, just so you know. So on a 5 inch trailer, you're going to use these top holes. But use whichever hole is going to be closest to the frame. That's going to reduce any of the pivoting or movement. We are going to bring it up to this set of holes since we are working with a frame that we can do that on. It's just going to give our tire a little bit more elevation, get it up a little bit higher. Now we're going to grab our bolts and place those through. Now what we'll do is just place that right on top of the frame, just like that. That's going to hold our carrier there. You've got the plates that are going to go on the back. You see the holes are designed to match that in the carrier. So use the same hole we picked on the front and here to the back. And we're going to add on a flat washer and a lock washer, and we'll thread on our nut to help hold it in place.Same thing for the other side and you'll see we're placing these brackets on with the flat point towards the trailer. Now we're going to bring our bolt through the bottom here, and again, we want that to be as close to the trailer as possible and it's going to receive the same type hardware. And same thing for out last bolt. Now we'll start tightening down our hardware. We're going to use an 18 millimeter wrench and socket to do it.Once we've tightened these down evenly, top to bottom, you'll want to look in your instructions. There you'll find your torque specs. You're going to torque all four bolts down appropriately. Now for use on the 4 on 4 bolt pattern, we're going to use the lower hole and the hole directly above it, so the two that in line with each other. On our 5 bolt pattern, we're going to use this hole and this hole.So we've got a our carriage bolt. So we'll place that in the back of each of those holes. That square engages the square cut out in the plate so we can get our tire put in place. Now we'll place on our flat washer, our lock washer and the provided nut. You're going to do that of course, in both locations. Now, depending on the thickness of your trailer frame, you may have some extra bolt hanging out of the back, you can see like we do here.Once you have it installed, it's not a bad idea to cut those off just so you don't have to worry about hanging or hooking anything on them. And that will complete our look at the Maxxtow spare tire carrier, part number MT70214.

This spare tire carrier is high quality and was exactly what I needed. I mounted it directly to the tailgate of my dump trailer and it works great. Whenever I need something I go to etrailer first they have great, high quality products at great prices.

I needed a spare tire mount that would work for my very specific needs. I repurposed a hitch mount truck bed ATV carrier and am using it at my spare tire carrier on my SxS. It works great and this spare tire mount is a perfect fit. It feels rock solid and doesn't move or rattle at all. This was one of the very few if not the only one that looked like it would fit my needs and with the videos etrailer always provides gave me the confidence it would fit as it did. I purchase from etrailer all the time and this is just another example why I do.

The spare tire holder for my new 12" wheel and tire was the perfect replacement for the homemade bracket I was previously using for the 8" wheel.

So glad that I finally decided to mount my spare tire on my boat trailer. This carrier worked great for my 5-lug wheel. Just make sure that you look at the illustrationed drawings as to how to situate all of the nuts/bolts, it will save you a lot of headache and time in installation. Also, plan on having two people to actually mount the wheel, that, too, will be fairly easy. Very happy with my purchase.

Excellent product - exactly as advertised. Works well to store the 12 in bias spare on my trailer. Bought two so i have one on each side (taking trailer from NE to South FL)

The white wagon wheels look good, the spare tire mount is perfect, and all was a great price! Great service, fast shipping and just what I needed to have my rig safe and ready. Time to go sailing!

Just what I needed to keep my spare tire secured and out of the way! More importantly is the service received from etrailer customer service! I received my order damaged by the shipper, box destroyed and missing the hardware needed to install mount! One email to etrailer and I received multiple responses from customer service, ready and willing to help! My item was replaced and shipped immediately! These guys are great!

Had to drill an extra hole to mount my trailer wheel.

- MT70214
by:

Adjustable mounting fit my utility trailer just fine and mounted my 15" spare tire and keeps it out of my garage and ready to use if needed

- MT70214
by:

Very nice well built bracket, however, I installed it in a horizontal position instead of a vertical position as most people. I had to get shorter bolts (7/16-14 x 2-1/2). The bolts that came with the bracket were way to long for my application. Most likely if you were installing it on the tongue that would not be an issue. Fit my 15'' tire just fine (4-4.5" holes.) Thanks etrailer

- MT70214
by:

This spare tire carrier works very well for the economical price. The construction is solid, welds are good and should last a long time. The information with the carrier did not indicate the material for the bolts. Rather than take a risk on rusting, I replaced the bolts with stainless steel bolts and added a lock nut. My trailer has 2" x 4 " channel and the carrier fit excellent, as advertised. I would have given the carrier 5 stars but for some reason the lug bolt holes were slightly off for a 5-lug wheel. It still works but one bolt has to be inserted at a slight angle.

Yours was the only one that fit my large fram trailer. And fit perfectly screwed it on finger tight then the wrenches. Very satisfied the product heavy duty. Excellent. Thank you

Very easy to install, very versatile, can mount many different places on my trailer, great product.

Initially seemed like it could have been made from a little stiffer plate, but considering the capacity of the trailer it’s ok. Has made 1000 mile trips without cracking or coming loose

- MT70214
by:

Does what it says, nicely mounted a spare tire on the tongue of my utility trailer on a 3"x3" square tube. There are a couple corners cut on this budget model to be aware of: (1) The mounting plate deformed a surprising amount when torqued to the specified xx lb.-ft., but did eventually hold that clamp load. (2) The lugs are carriage bolts with nothing but the wheel to hold them to the plate. It would have been nice if they were pressed-in studs instead. (3) The lug nuts included are the less common 3/4" size. To avoid having two different size lug nuts on my trailer, I swapped them for some old 13/16" nuts. Note that the stock picture of the carrier has the mounting bolts backward; the nuts go on the side with the spare tire.

- MT70214
by:

Just what I needed. I forgot to buy 2 lock nut units but I will here soon

Great spare tire bracket for my boat trailer. Easy to install and holds the 13 inch spare perfectly. Would recommend.

I needed a spare tire for my trailer and I also needed a way to mount it so I bought this. The bolts that came with the bracket were way to long so I went and got some shorter grade 5 bolts and ta da looks good, works great.

I've gone years taking a risk I wouldn't get a flat on my boat trailer and decided enough is enough! Bought this spare tire carrier and installed in about 10 minutes. So easy and now no more worries when I hit the road!

- MT70214
by:

Works as advertised and has a decent amount of adjustment. I raised it to the higher setting to keep the tire away from the ground when going over the top of my driveway. Apologies for the messy garage in the pic, but very happy with the purchase for my 4'x10' Utility/ATV trailer.

I expected to receive Subject order on 12/15/2020. The order actually arrived 12/12/2020 ahead of schedule. Thanks to the entire etrailer staff for your immediate and friendly response to complete the order and ship it priority rather than standard ground at no additional cost to me. The staff at etrailer has been very helpful throughout the ordering process and I will use etrailer exclusively when it carries products I need. I will also recommend etrailer to anyone needing products and/or parts that you provide. Thank you again for a great job.

- MT70214
by:

Perfect, but... Need 2 nuts for the wheel holder. Using just the included lug nuts, the sharp, square corners dig into the rim. You included 2 washers and 2 locking washers that aren't necessary unless there are 2 plain nuts. This would hold the wheel away from the sharp corners. It would also make the wheel bolts captive, so they wouldn't be lost on the side of the road.

- MT70214
by:

welded it onto my flatbed 5X10' trailer. worked like a charm and able to mount my spare up and out of the way on the passenger side.

- MT70214
by:

Need to increase the spread of the hole pattern to accommodate trailers that have an I beam that is 5 3/4 tall. Had to modify the bracket by welding additional piece and drill appropriate holes.

Ask the Experts about this MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier

  • Spare Tire Mounting Location on Trailer Frame
The spare tire can be mounted near the wheel and axle to the frame, but you will want more than 5 inches of ground clearance. I recommend the Extra Offset Trailer Spare Tire Carrier by Dutton-Lainson # DL22145 based on your photo. Every extra inch will help as trailer suspension normally has a deflection of about 4 inches so just 5 inches would be pretty tight but can work in most cases. Mounting a spare tire on a teardrop trailer can be a bit tricky especially if you don't want to use a tongue mount carrier like the MaxxTow # MT70214. Placing the spare tire on the side of your trailer would cause balance issues and I can't really recommend it because the trailer wasn't designed to have something heavy mounted to the outside.
