Saris SA999TB-996B-FB

The Freedom gives you the liberty to rapidly load and safely transport 2 bikes of nearly any size or shape on your vehicle's spare tire. This compact, platform-style rack has wheel trays that are specifically designed for fat bike tires. It's easy to use and weighs just 22.5 lbs, so you'll spend more time riding and less time wrestling with the rack or loading and unloading your bikes.

Pivoting Cradles with Cushioned Straps

Saris Freedom Cuscino Cradle

The Freedom has Cuscinos - or pillows - that are built into the ratcheting straps that hold your bikes by the downtubes or top tubes in the rubber-lined cradles. These straps are specially designed to avoid scratching or scuffing your bike paint during transport. The rubber-lined cradles also have grooves that accommodate brake lines and cables.

Saris Freedom Adjustable Cradles

The cradles pivot and slide up and down the central mast. This allows the rack to grab your bike's downtube at the perfect angle. Plastic twist knobs secure the cradles in place.

Adjustable Wheel Trays

Saris SA999TB-996B-FB Fat Bike Trays

You can adjust the injection-molded plastic wheel trays along the rack's horizontal arm to accommodate bikes with different wheelbases. These trays secure in place with plastic twist knobs. Ratcheting plastic straps secure your bike's wheels to the trays.

If you want to carry a fat bike on the Freedom, you can replace the rack's wheel trays with fat bike cradles (SA4419 - sold separately). Or, if you want to carry 2 recumbent bikes, you can replace the horizontal arm with a longer arm (SA4415B - sold separately) that accommodates recumbents with up to 57" wheelbases.

Folding Mast

Saris SA999TB-996B-FB Folding Mast

You can fold down the upright mast by pulling a lever at the base. This allows you to easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area, and it means you can leave the rack in your hitch without it interfering with your cargo hatch or backup camera. The compact design also lets you easily store the rack in your garage when it's not in use.

Spare Tire Mounting Plates

To determine which mounting plate you will need to mount the Saris Freedom to your car's spare tire, you will need to measure the wheel depth on your spare tire by doing the following:

Saris Spare Tire Rack Plate Measurement

If the wheel depth, or distance between the spare tire mounting plate and the outside of the tire, is between 5" and 7-3/4", you will need to use Plate B (SA996B - sold separately).

If the wheel depth is between 2-1/2" and 5-1/4", then you will need to use Plate A, which is included with the Freedom bike rack (SA999TB).

Video Transcript for Saris Freedom Spare Tire Bike Racks Review - 2016 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler, we've got the Saris Freedom Spare Tire Mounted Platform Style 2 Bike Rack out. We're test fitting it to let you see how it fits on the Wrangler. This is part number SA999TB. This spare tire rack is going to mount with the plate behind your spare tire, uses all the existing lug nuts, so it's really easy to get it installed, and it offers us a platform style rack, which we don't often see with the spare tire bike racks. We've got 3 points of contact that are going to hold the bike. Got a front cradle with strap, a rear cradle with strap, and also our center frame cradle strap here. It really does a good job of immobilizing the bike, keeps them from moving back and forth that we might get from some of those hanging style rack, might get some more sway out of those. To remove our bike, we're just going to release our straps.

Just push in the button on our cam buckle there. It's similar to a cam buckle. It's more like a small leather arm there, so you get good tension on it. With that released, you'll see the bike's going to hold its position pretty well. You don't want it certainly go down the road or anything like this, but it'll allow you to get your hands up here, get a hold of your bike, and will be able to pull that right off. That'll give you a good look inside of the cradles themselves there on the wheels,.

They're going to have the narrower area right down here for our road bike tires, and it widens out for larger tires. You see our frame cradle here,. This is going to rotate for us,. You've got the rubber fins in there that are going to help with absorbing road shock, and that's also going to give our brake cables and shifter a spot to stay. We've also got the protected right here on the top, so our frame's going to be fully protected while we head down the road. Let's figure out what this rack's actually going to add.

We'll start with to the rear of the vehicle, and it looks like that's going to be about 26-1/2 inches,. Now, this is on tire size 255/75-R17, and from the tire itself out, it'll be about 18-1/2 inches. The thing that we really like about this rack is its ability to . or not its ability, but our ability to still open our rear cargo door here, and even with our bike loaded, we didn't have any issues with it wanting to go up and make contact, so that's really nice. Another thing we've got is going to be the folding center mast.

We can bring that down into the stored position or all the way down into a more flat position. Now, as far as removing the rack from the vehicle goes, you are going to need a wrench. It can be a crescent wrench, channel locks. Just going to use a socket here. We're going to back out this large main bolt. With that out, it's just as easy as sliding it right off. There, you can see the adapter that fits in behind our spare tire. Use our normal lug nuts to secure it in place and our bike rack's going to slide right on. Now, this is the A bracket, so it's going to come with the rack. That's for your smaller size tire. Once you get up into larger size tires, you're going to need SA996B. That's going to be the B plate for those larger, the more oversized tires. Now, that we've had a good look at the Saris Freedom Spare Tire Mounted bike Rack. We've seen how it's going to look and how it works on our 2016 Jeep Wrangler, let's take a look and see how it performed when they had it out on the test course. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side-to-side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or a pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up-and-down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage, or driveway.

Works as described. Had to figure out that the piece that goes behind the tire doesn't hang on the lugs on my 2016 wrangler. It is simply suspended and held in place by the spare. I hope the weight of the rack and two bikes isn't adversely affecting my door. I like the fact that since it is attached to the door it swings with the door and moves out of the way. 432938

Comments

Still working as described. It would be better if it hung on the lugs as I suggested. Wondering if they made that improvement.

I needed a bike rack to fit on my Jeep Wrangler that has 37 in tires and deep fuel wheels. This item with the extension, fit perfectly even with a backup camera on my bolts for my 37 in. Toyo spare tire. I am able to detach it with one screw and it is lightweight, so i only have bolt it on, add bike(s) and go. Easy to install minus the fact a 37 inch tire weighs a lot. Etrailer.com didn’t have the extension part in stalk but kept me informed of every step of the way. I still received it within 5 business days with customer service followed it all the way through. Great company. 572296

Tire Mount for a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited. Installation is easy. However the mounting bracket doesn't fit well. If you look at the video on Saris website, (I believe this is a wrangler they are using) the top two tire bolts and the mount have very small contact point. The contact point is so small that all the weight and pressure seems to be concentrated on such a small area on the bolts. I would think that this could damage the bolts. I placed the bracket on its side which gives a much better and greater contact surface area. The problem with doing it this way is that its not perfectly square, thus in the end, the rack is slightly off level. Too me it's worth having the better contact area for this offset. I also used a little Silcone lubricant spay on the attachment bolt. Too keep it clean, rust free etc. The Rack itself is of excellent quality, Bike racks live on our SUVs. This is the first Saris rack we have tried. The only time, we plan on taking the rack off is for extreme off roading. The only reason for that is to ensure rear clearance of the rack. Of course you would have to do this for any platform rack including anything that could be mounted to any trailer hitch. In any event, we just recently put the rack on and it seems very stable, strong and everything you would want in a bike rack. I found the attachment points to the bike to my liking. After the first setup, the bikes really fit nicely, they could not be any easier to put on and take off, just a great rack. We are using it for our 26 inch Specialized Stump Jumper and Eros. Total weight of both bikes is about 56 lbs. True, this doesn't come with locks but personally I think such locks give a false sense of security and we don't use them on our other hitch carrier that comes with them. Any crook can easily get through any such device quickly. The other issue I saw on reviews of this product is it doesn't fold up. It sticks out 18 inches from the Wrangle gate tire , My folded up bike hitch on my other SUV sticks out 10 inches. To me this is a non issue as I am aware of it. Overall, I would have given this Saris bike rack 5 plus stars if it wasn't for the mounting bracket. I would even pay a little more money for a better bracket as this rack is that good. 180020

I was worried that the rack would be flimsy and not very sturdy, but this rack is anything but that. It is extremely solid works exactly as advertised. I have a CRV with an offset spare tire, so the bottom of the rack extends further to the left. This does not present any problems and it is extremely stable. The only two small things I'd mention are these. 1) Situating a bike in the rear position takes a little bit of effort until you figure out the best way to get it on. It literally takes about 30 seconds to put one on the front positions, but a lot longer in the rear. 2) The plate that attaches to the spare tire mount did not quite fit so that it was resting on the bolts while being centered through the hole in the tire. I had to position it so that it kind of floated in the middle while tightening the spare tire lugs. It seems to be holding though, so no worries so far. Overall, I've been completely satisfied and would highly recommend it. 125341

Hi,Could you explain what you mean by a lot longer, when referring to putting a bike on the rear position. How much more complicated is it, and why? Thanks,Dave

I just installed this on my Jeep and it was really easy. I have aftermarket tires which are pretty wide so I had to purchase the extended mounting plate. It is really sturdy. I feel a lot better about putting a carbon fiber frame bike on this platform rack, opposed to have to hang it on my old rack which isn’t good for the carbon frame. Also it is nice to be able to open the gate on the Jeep while it is still attached. I won’t have to take it off to put my dogs in the back of the Jeep. 565279

I had this bike rack for one year . We travel in a motor home and flat tow our Jeep Wrangler . This mounts to the spare tire allowing me to open the rear door with the bikes loaded . Also the bike rack is not in the way after the bikes are unloaded . If you want to remove the rack it only takes a minute to take the one bolt out and slide it off . Our last bike rack was a hitch mount which I had to unload the bikes to get gear in and out of the back . I've carried the bikes over 10000 miles with no issues . 635398

I love this bike rack. I leave the bracket installed behind the spare tire on our 2008 Rav4. Then it takes less than 5 minutes to attach the rack to the bracket, and less than that to load 2 bikes. The rack is snug against the tire, and doesn't wobble the way a trailer-mounted rack does. The bikes are supported at the wheels and the crossbar, eliminating the swinging and swaying that a top mount would have. Best of all, I can open the Rav4's rear door while the bikes are loaded (although I don't want to that that often because of the added weight on the hinges). The biggest downside is that new Rav4s don't have the exterior spare tire, so this rack wouldn't work. I guess we'll going to hang on to the 2008 for a while in order to enjoy the bike rack. 524936

Very solid rack. I have it mounted on a 2018 Kia Niro and it's perfect. Holds two 29" bikes well. Only complaint is the weight and it's not the most compact thing to store. 640049

Review from a similar Saris Freedom in Spare Tire Bike Racks

WOW WOW WOW That is what I just kept saying after installing this Saris bike rack. I have been looking for a bike rack for almost 3-4 months now. Thule and Yakima didn't have what I was looking for. Their solution for a 4-5 bike rack is too complicated, not efficient, and it would be a nightmare to manage on a regular basis. So I couldn't get myself to pull a trigger on any of those and I kept searching. Finally, I came to eTrailer and found out about Saris. That is where the love starts :) We are a family of 5 (3 kids and 2 grown-ups). I needed something that will help me load bikes fast, unload them and still be able to have access to the back of my Toyota Sequoia. Saris delivered in every way. Assemble of the item is straight forward. Instructions are clear and to the point. They even give you a yellow strip that helps you mark where the hitch needs to be in order to align hole openings for easier installation after you install it the first time ;) The back-up camera is still usable but not 100%. Tilting down the rack with the bikes on it is simple as 1-2-3. There is plenty of room left between the trunk door and the bike as you can see on the pictures. One HUGE benefit is that you do not need any extra parts for kids bikes. Not like with other brands. Saris delivers tremendously on this part too. No shaking, rattling, or anything that would make you notice that you have this amazing product on the back of your SUV/truck. I can't recommend it more. I am just surprised that this product has not been more advertised and represented compared to other products. 655654

Thanks to the ease and simplicity of the installation videos, I knew I would have absolutely no problem whatsoever doing the work myself...and I was right. Although I have net transported bikes yet ( picking up 2 bikes later today), I do want to share that purchasing it thru etrailer.com was very easy and it shipped very fast to my home. The Sarris Freedom was extremely easy to put together. It took about 10 minutes, basicly 3 bolts. Its very sturdy yet light, not bulky. Looks easy to store in my garage when not in use. Straps and wheel holders appear to be very well built. Got it on sale and the price was very good. Looking forward to trying it out later when picking up 2 new bikes. I plan on transporting somewhat locally between 5 and 25 miles each way. Initial feeling its a very nice rack. 460675

I can’t get my two senior bicycles on the rack. Too short. Not happy with this product 525414

I was wondering if you could elaborate on how your bikes did not fit on your Saris bike rack. It does have a maximum wheelbase of 48 inches, and the wheel hoops are intended to be adjustable. If there is anything that I can do to help you out to try to get your bikes to fit I would be happy to give it a try.

I have checked with my contacts at Saris and if you are needing a longer horizontal bar you can use # SA4451B. This is an extended length adapter bar, and Saris actually uses this for their recumbent bike racks. For this bar you will need to measure the center hub to hub of the bikes and make sure that is less than 57 inches. https:www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-PartsSarisSA4415B.html

i give it three rating it is a nice rack and really light and easy to handle...The only two things I don't like about it are. I cannot put my short wheel base recumbent on it unless I do a lot of rigging... and two the cups for the wheel are plastic and I have had one break. Look up the replacement part and is a reasonably priced but the shipping is ridicules. I have patch it with gorilla tape and is working fairly well.. Am looking for another type so I can just put the recumbent on easily. 281792

The Saris Freedom 2 Platform Rack fits my needs very nicely. It is lightweight, so it is easy to handle, and is plenty strong to hold 2 bikes. The platform format supports the bikes nicely and is convenient to load. etrailer has been very helpful and cooperative with getting me set up with this rack. 289339

I still remember how cooperative etrailer was with me. I use the bike rack rarely, but I did use it to take two bikes up to Oregon recently in order to view the eclipse of the sun. Our motel was about 10 miles from our chosen viewing point, and we rode bikes to get there. The Saris Bike Rack isn’t as convenient to use as some heavier and more expensive racks, but it did the job for me just fine. It gets easier with practise. I am pleased with it and will be using it in the future. I also would point out that the Saris company also was very helpful to me.

Review from a similar Saris Freedom in Spare Tire Bike Racks

I received my Freedom 2 rack yesterday. It took me about 10 minutes to assemble it with no issues at all. This morning, I put the rack on the back of my 2014 Ford Explorer, and began to load my bike. The rack attached easily to my 2" hitch receiver, and when I tightened the bolt, it was a very sturdy and stable fit. I made the adjustments required to mount my bike on the rack, and found that it traveled securely and very stable. My only issue with the Freedom 2 is the hold-down straps on the wheel and tube brackets. I think a better ratcheting system and a better qualitty strap would greatly enhance the unit. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the rack. My carbon fibre hybrid and my grandson's road bikes will be easily transported to wherever we want to ride! 391673

Review from a similar Saris Freedom in Spare Tire Bike Racks

I bought this rack for several reasons, including its price point and light weight. I also like where its designed and made. The American flag on the back is a nice touch. I also wanted a solid platform rack that would hold two bikes securely for long road trips and highway speeds. I didn't see much need for a heavier tilt-away rack since I can easily access the rear of my small hatchback through the back the seats. This hitch is easy to assemble and ready to go in minutes. Its light weight makes it easy to slide into the hitch and the threaded hitch pin holds the rack tight. I also bought a cheap socket wrench and a deep 19mm socket to keep in the car. There is still a small amount of side to side wobble when the bikes are loaded, but not much. You won't notice any wobble when driving unless the road is really rough. Be sure to check out ETrailer's road test video of this rack. This is a good sturdy rack. I also got the hitch strap that Curt recommends to secure the center upright support to the car. I also recommend getting the Saris locking hitch pin and cable combo with matching keys. This rack does not fold up completely because the hitch arm is fixed, but its still light and easy to move around and store. And you could always take the hitch arm off for longer term winter storage. It does take some fiddling to get the tire mounts and drop bar mounts lined up for each bike so if you have four different bikes like I do, you'll find yourself doing that quite often. Eventually I will memorize the locations for each or mark them somehow on the rack. My two large road bikes fit like a glove but I could see there being some difficulty with getting seats and handle bars to clear sometimes, which means more time fiddling with the mounts when loading up a friend's bike. I also like how well centered the bikes are and how little side overhang I'm able to achieve, which is also important for long road trips and highway speeds (less drag = better mpg). All of my bikes are well centered and only my big 29" mountain bike with its long wheelbase sticks out to the side much. On the downside, but not for me, it does take some strength to lift the inside bike up and over the center support, and doing so carefully without hitting the back of your car. This could be a problem for some, especially if you have a big heavy townie or mountain bike. This is also dependent on how high your hitch receiver is off the ground. Mine happens to be very low to the ground so I don't have to lift the bikes as high as I would on a larger SUV for example. So other platform racks may be a better choice if you're concerned about lifting your bike up to or over shoulder height just to get it on the rack. To sum it up, the Saris Freedom 2 is a great rack for a good price and I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and for all the great info and advice from the wonderful people at Etrailer.com to make it so easy! Etrailer rocks! 346699

This is a great product. It is easy to use. The bikes stay separated and do not bump into each other as they did on our 4 bike hanging rack. It does not require any extra set up for the women's bikes we have which is a real plus. We love that it is made in the USA and that it can be used with a 2" and 1 1/4" hitch. Etrailers were great to deal with. 148369

This product works very well for the type of bikes we got (Electra Townie men’s and woman’s). Not the best rack for the type of vehicle (2013 Jeep Wrangler). Unable to open back hatch to let dog out until the bikes are off the rack. First trip was 600 miles with bikes in tow and didn’t even know they were there. I love the fact that this is a American made product. I am happy with my purchase. Thanks to the support staff at etrailer it was a great experience 524849

Completely inadequate for my application (heavier-than average eBikes; within the weight specifications of this Saris Freedom rack). eTrailer customer service should have advised against this rack, and for one more suitable for the task. But eTrailer did not recommend a more suitable rack. The rail from the hitch receiver to the rack is too long - on my installation, at least eight inches of wobbly lever could be removed and there would still be plenty of clearance between the rack and my vehicle bumper. That cartoonishly-long lever evokes the memory of Archimedes' long lever to move the world - in the case of this Saris Freedom rack, that long lever just makes the bikes and the rack wobble unacceptably. Of course, if the end-user modifies the rack in an attempt to do the design engineering job that was not done in Madison, WI, the lifetime warranty is voided. Replaced this rack with a Thule Easyfold. Way more money, but it does the job because it was designed to do the job. 420946

Etrailers website was easy to use and the product choices were great. We found the exact product that we were looking for to accommodate our two folding "Bike Fridays". We will use the rack on the back of our Mazda CX-5 and on the front of our Ford F450 pu truck. Your service was outstanding shipping, tracking and delivery. The onsite videos were helpful. Thank you very much. Pics are attached. 391484

Review from a similar Saris Freedom in Spare Tire Bike Racks

First off I give ETrailer a 110% rating. I placed my order and received it. The same day I was looking for some bike accessories on another site and they had this rack listed for less. I sent the link per their guarantee and shortly after it was sent I received a response that there is a credit to my credit card. The rack assembles very easily. It only requires bolting ta few pieces together is is almost self explanatory. It would be nice if the 2 " adaptor would screw onto the 11/4" tube instead of just slipping on. it has a tendency to slide off. The instructions have a few cautions. One is not to drive over 70 MPH. The other is to avoid placing the wheels near any exhaust. I find this almost impossible as I have a Flex with dual exhaust and there is no way that the bikes can be put in the rack without the tires being close to the exhaust. It also recommends removing the unit when not in use. initial set up of the bikes took some time and readajustments. I had to swap the tire holders from outside to inside. The holder come off the tubes very easy. There is a tab that can be depressed for the units to slip off. I had to one them because the larger bike is supposed to be near the car and the way that they were bothe bikes wouldn't fit. It was then a lot of shifting to get both bikes to fit and for the handle bars not to hit the seats on the other bike and for the cranks to clear the upright post. I did finally manage to get both to clear everything but the wheels of the bikes do extend a little beyond the side of the vehicle. The bolts that hold the tire holders in place have a nut on the bottom that can and will fall off if loosed too much. It is not a problem if you notice that the nut fell off and are able to find it. Once adjustment is found the bikes are securely held in place. If your an on carrying different bikes it may make the unit a little difficult changing the settings. I don't know how other carriers are since this is my first rack. It doesn't fold as compact as other racks as the upright unit is the only thing that folds down by pulling out the spring loaded pin. With the upright down it doesn't interfere with the back up camera. A wrench is required to install and remove the hitch. I have a flex so there is a lot of space in the back to store the hitch when not in use. With a regular vehicle it may be difficult as it doesn't really fold into a compact shape. This may also present a problem when storing in a garage if limited for space. 194833

Review from a similar Saris Freedom in Spare Tire Bike Racks

This rack was purchased to replace a much heavier 4 bike rack. It is much lighter. Also, the threader mounting bolt is well done resulting in no noise from the mounting when traveling. There are 2 weaknesses which do not recommend the rack. First, the spring loaded pin for holding the vertical bar in place works very poorly resulting in the bar flopping around while loading bikes. More significant is the plastic construction of the brackets for attaching. The ones on the horizontal bar are workable but more difficult to slide than they should be. The ones on the vertical bar are worse. The padding for the frame is fine. But the latching straps and mechanism are awful. You have to adjust the bikes' positions and hardware (petals, etc) to get the brackets as far from everything as possible. Then you can thread the straps where you can closely guide and push them through the latching mechanism. If you try in any limited area, the straps won't be tight and you will just let the bike(s) travel loosely mounted. Fortunately the padding does keep them from getting scratched. Unless the brackets have been redesigned, I would not recommend this rack. I'm keeping the rack because it costs too much to just throw away. I've experimented for a year, so I've gotten everything in a workable position. Even so, it takes twice as long to load and unload bikes as it has on any other rack I've owned in the past 40 years. 657619

Package arrived sooner than expected! Thanks! Bike rack was easy to assemble. Looking to haul 4 bikes around, this will make life easier. More time on the bikes and less messing with the rack. Plus, it stores in the folded position keeping it out of the way, on the back of your vehicle or in the garage. We have a truck camper and for the first time will take all 4 bikes and be able to to access the back door of the camper with the tilt down function. 590826

Purchasing the product, pricing and speed of delivery were all awesome. Have used etrailer before and they have always been great. Assembling the bike rack was not too difficult. Their instruction manual could use a little work though. It took some decifering to figure out. But I LOVE the bike rack. Much easier to use than any previous bike rack I have owned. And it can stay on the vehicle for extended periods, without being bothersome. I LOVE IT! 501659

Very well designed bike carrier. Fits perfectly in my 2003 Silverado receiver and locking bolt tightens down to provide a solid wobble free mount. My Gary Fisher bike fits snug in the carrier and I can strap the cross bar without removing the water bottle bracket. However we have to remove the bracket on my girlfriend's Trek. Overall very happy with this carrier. Great way to get your bikes to the mountains without damaging them. 410344

Do you have a question about this Spare Tire Bike Rack?

  • Spare Tire Mount Bike Racks for a 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited with Backup Camera
  • The Hollywood Racks SR1, # HRSR1, fits around the spare tire on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JL) and thus would only block the backup camera when loaded. The same goes for the Malone RunWay # MPG2148. There is a high probability that you could use your swing-away rack with hitch # C13392 or # 76104 assuming you are using the stock spare tire size. On your Jeep the hitch receiver opening will be just about flush with the bumper which will be directly above it with maybe a 1 inch...
