Video Transcript for Laclede Chain Safety Chains and Cables - Safety Chains - 1483-535-04 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number 1483-535-04. This is the Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook from Laclede Chain Accessories and Parts. Trailer safety chains are required in most state to secure the trailer to the tow vehicle in the event that the trailer coupler would come off the hitch ball. This chain's going to give us a chain diameter of 3/8". That's going to include the keeper on the hook, so that's going to prevent anything from being able to unhook from this portion here. If you take a measurement from the center of the hook to the edge of the last link, you're going to get an overall length of 35" and it's going to offer a 5,400 lb working load limit.

That's going to do it for today's review of part number 1483-535-04. This is the Long Safety Chain with a Clevis Slip Hook from Laclede Chain Accessories and Parts. .

Ask the Experts about this Laclede Chain Safety Chains and Cables
Do you have a question about this Safety Chains and Cable?

  • How to Choose Correct Capacity for Trailer Safety Chains
  • I definitely understand how safety chain capacities and determining exactly what chain rating you need for your trailer can be a bit confusing. To keep it as simple as possible, safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of EACH chain, not the working load limit (WLL), should be equal to or exceed the gross trailer weight.A 5,000 pound trailer needs safety chains that each have a break strength of at least 5,000 pounds. A chain's working load limit comes more into play...

  • S-Hook Dimensions of the Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables
  • I have attached a dimensional photo of the Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables with S-Hooks part # C80151 and the larger Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables with S-Hooks part # C80176 for you as it would be a bit difficult to explain the dimensions via text. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. One of these options should work with the safety chain loops on your 2019 Honda Ridgeline but if not you would want to use a clevis style type hook like the Long Safety Chain...

  • How is the Reese Titan Hitch Box Extension Supported and Does it Require Stabilization Chains
  • The trailer hitch on the truck is what supports the extension. The extension is designed to fit in a 2-1/2 inch receiver (measuring on the inside) and the receiver part of the extension has a 2 inch receiver opening. The only thing you need for the extension is a properly sized hitch pin like # 74149. For lateral, back and forth movement of the extension, it is normal to see some play. Reese does not make any lateral stabilization chains for the Titan extensions. You will need to...

  • Availability of Hitch Extender for 33 inches of Extension on 2-1/2 inch Trailer Hitch
  • As long as you have a 2-1/2 inch hitch installed on your 2017 Ford F-350 we have the Curt hitch extension part # C45048 which is 34 inches long like what you said you'd need. It has a 4,500 lb trailer capacity though so you'll need to keep that in mind.

  • Recommended Safety Chain Extension For 5/16 Inch Chains
  • To extend your chains, I recommend the 40" Vinyl Coated Safety Cables with Clevis Hook (Qty. 2) by Dutton-Lainson, 6,500 lbs. # DL20119. They require 5/8 inch diameter bolts, flat washers and locknuts to mount. Another option is to use the 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, 5,400 lbs. # 1483-535-04 and can be installed using the same hardware listed above.

  • How Does Chain Working Load Limit Relate to Break Strength Rating
  • A safety chain's working load limit (WLL) is always 1/3 of the chain's break strength and it is the limit you want to stay within in normal use. If your chains have a rated break strength of 11,700-lbs then the correct clevis slip hook you can use is # TCSLIP-G70-8-L which has a WLL of 4700-lbs. This hook fits chains links that are 5/16-inch like your existing hook.

  • How to Reduce Receiver Play and Use Chain Loops on the Titan Hitch Box Extension # RP45292
  • The play that you are experiencing with the Titan Hitch Box Extension, # RP45292, is normal. This is present because of manufacturing tolerance differences between the hitch extension and receiver and the length of the extension is magnifying the play. It would be a good idea to go with a Hitch Immobilizer, # BX88225 to eliminate as much movement as possible with the extension, but it is not required. Just be sure that when installing the immobilizer that you do not tighten it so much...

  • Safety Chain Hook Recommendation for a Hitch with Large Safety Chain Hoops
  • Due to the thickness of the safety chain loops on your hitch your best option would be to go with a hook and keeper setup like the part # 1483-535-04. I attached a picture that shows the size of the opening on the hook. For just the hook you would want the part # 6495-401-04.

  • Trailer Safety Chain and Quick Link Recommendation for Trailer
  • The quick link part # 49135 that you referenced has a 10k capacity as it's max capacity and a 3,300 working load limit. The working load limit would be if the chains was to see that capacity at all times. For a set of chains then to go with that you could use the part # 1483-535-04. These have a 5,400 lb working load limit.

  • How Are Safety Chains Rated
  • Safety chains come in a variety of classes: Class I (2,000 pounds gross trailer weight or GTW), Class II (3500 pounds GTW), Class III (5,000 pounds GTW), etc. It is important that the capacity of the chains exceed your GTW, the weight of the loaded trailer. I think the 5,400 pounds you are referring to is the chain's Working Load Limit, which is about 1/3 of a chain's break strength. Safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of each chain should be equal to or exceed...

  • Replacement Safety Chain Recommendation for Horse Trailer with Chains that are Too Short
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled safety chain quick link # 49135 to measure for you. With the nut fully opened the opening is just over 1/2 an inch (0.52 inches). If you can fit the opening over you current safety chains they should work well as these have a 10k capacity each. A better solution would be to replace your current safety chains with something like the part # 49150 as this is a 44 inch safety chain kit with a 16k capacity. Or for a 35 inch chain part # 1483-535-04.

  • For your 2001 Kia Sportage, in addition to hitch # 36266, and wiring # HM43915, you will need a ball mount and a ball for the coupler on the trailer. You will also need safety chains unless the trailer comes with them. For a 1-1/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch opening, like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 36266, use Class II Drawbar, # 36051. • The hook end of chain # 2118-605-04 will fit mount # MB12 but the opening in the chain links is too narrow for MB12 to fit. You would need chain # 1483-535-04. • Determining Best Safety Chain Replacement for Keystone Trailer
  • The length of chains you will need for your trailer will really depend on your particular setup. For example if the safety chain loops on your tow vehicle are spaced far apart, then you will want to make sure you have a bit more slack for making tight turns. Also keep in mind that you will need enough length to criss-cross them under the coupler. The easiest solution will be to simply take a quick measurement on your existing safety chains and go with a matching length for a replacement....

  • You can add links to your existing safety chains. My recommendation is to make sure the links you add are correctly installed, and have sufficient strength. If you decide to replace your existing safety chains I recommend the Laclede 35 inch Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, part # 1483-535-04, that you mentioned. • That should work provided that in the process of shortening the chain to make 2 chains and when bending or flexing you do not stress the metal. If the metal is heated up or you see stress marks in the metal, fractures or discolored areas these are signs that the metal is fatigued and should not be used for this application. Of course the ideal solution is to just go ahead and use a new chain such as 2 of # 1483-535-04. Then you know you will have nothing to worry about. And of course,...

  • The chain links on safety chain # 1483-535-04 are 3/8 of an inch in diameter so to match that use # 6590-044-04 but its working load limit is 2,200 pounds. Since the safety chain is rated higher using a 3/8 quick link would reduce the capacity. To maintain the capacity you can use a 1/2 inch quick link # 49135 which has a 3,300 pound safe working load limit. As far as dimensional or CAD drawings it really depends on what you want and the specific parts in question. CAD drawings are going...

  • What is the Preferred Method of Connecting Safety Chains from a Trailer to a Trailer Hitch
  • Provided that you have safety chains rated as high or higher than the hitch capacity and they are securely connected to the safety chain loops on the trailer hitch, how you route them is not really an issue. You just do not want them to bind up (get wrapped around anything when making turns) as that could cause damage. So what most people do is have some sort of loop, like # 49135, connected to the trailer and then have the chains connected to it. The chains are then connected straight...
