Video Transcript for Laclede Chain Safety Chains and Cables - Safety Chains - 1483-535-04 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number 1483-535-04. This is the Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook from Laclede Chain Accessories and Parts. Trailer safety chains are required in most state to secure the trailer to the tow vehicle in the event that the trailer coupler would come off the hitch ball. This chain's going to give us a chain diameter of 3/8". That's going to include the keeper on the hook, so that's going to prevent anything from being able to unhook from this portion here. If you take a measurement from the center of the hook to the edge of the last link, you're going to get an overall length of 35" and it's going to offer a 5,400 lb working load limit.

That's going to do it for today's review of part number 1483-535-04. This is the Long Safety Chain with a Clevis Slip Hook from Laclede Chain Accessories and Parts. .

Received just fine. Hooked it up to the truck hitch with some very minor filing on the Ford class v hitch where the holes were drilled. Now to give it a try pulling something. (2016 DRW Ford F-350 with Lance 975 Truck Camper) 400200

No complaints. I Purchased these trailer chains because they are made here in the USA. Heavy duty and after a year, they still look brand new. If you want the best, get these! 831775

Used these as replacements on a 3600lb boat trailer. I wanted something stronger than the tiny single chain it had and upsized to these. Great chain. No rust anywhere after a year (fresh water but stored outside. Only downside is hook is thick and probably would jam into the small holes in my hitch. If you have large (bigger than 1 1/4) holes in your hitch you should be good. I welded on the 3/8 chain retainers so replacement in the future would be easier but I think these will last for years. With the retainers and the large chain and hooks I don't worry about bending the hooks if the coupler fails. Which happened on a different trailer once. I'd definitely buy these again. 825758

Good looking chain. Plating seems to be done well. Links welded completely, not like some cheaper quality safety chains. Length was great for use with Gen-y torsion hitches. 821349

As described, chains are out in the elements 24/7 and still no corrosion or rust. Would buy again. 726859

Ask the Experts about this Laclede Chain Trailer Safety Chains

  • How to Choose Correct Capacity for Trailer Safety Chains
I definitely understand how safety chain capacities and determining exactly what chain rating you need for your trailer can be a bit confusing. To keep it as simple as possible, safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of EACH chain, not the working load limit (WLL), should be equal to or exceed the gross trailer weight.A 5,000 pound trailer needs safety chains that each have a break strength of at least 5,000 pounds. A chain's working load limit comes more into play...
  • How Does Chain Working Load Limit Relate to Break Strength Rating
A safety chain's working load limit (WLL) is always 1/3 of the chain's break strength and it is the limit you want to stay within in normal use. If your chains have a rated break strength of 11,700-lbs then the correct clevis slip hook you can use is # TCSLIP-G70-8-L which has a WLL of 4700-lbs. This hook fits chains links that are 5/16-inch like your existing hook.

  • Can the Laclede Chain Safety Chains # 1483-535-04 be Used on a Boat Trailer
You will easily be able to use the Laclede Chain Safety Chains # 1483-535-04 that you mentioned on a boat trailer. The price and quantity are for a single chain. Each USA-made chain has a 5,400 lb capacity.

  • How to Determine Safety Chain Weight Capacity
The safety chains need to exceed the loaded weight of the trailer not the axle capacity. If the loaded weight of your trailer is significantly under 3500 lbs then a 3500 lb safety chain is fine. I have attached a link to all of the safety chains that we carry for your reference.

  • Proper Safety Chain Recommendation for 8,100 GVWR Trailer
The 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook # 1483-535-04 has a 5,400 lb capacity. If you used two of these you would have a combined capacity of 10,800 lbs. If you made one chain out of two of these then the capacity would only be 5,400 lbs. Two of these should provide you with more than enough safety chain capacity.

  • Where is Length Measured on 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, 5,400 lbs # 1483-535-04
The 35 inch length of the 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, 5,400 lbs # 1483-535-04 that you referenced is from the end of the chain to the center of the hook on the other end. So basically it's 35 inches of usable chain. See the attached picture and review video link for more info. We've found that this chain works really well on full size trucks like your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500.

  • Safety Chains that can Accommodate 3/8" Bolt
The chain links on safety chain # 1483-535-04 are 3/8 of an inch in diameter. This chain has a 5,400 lbs. Working Load Limit. For a quick link use # 6590-044-04. Its working load limit is 2,200 pounds. Since the safety chain is rated higher using a 3/8 inch quick link will reduce the capacity.

  • Quick Link Recommendations for Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook
The chain links on safety chain # 1483-535-04 are 3/8 of an inch in diameter so to match that use # 6590-044-04 but its working load limit is 2,200 pounds. Since the safety chain is rated higher using a 3/8 quick link would reduce the capacity. To maintain the capacity you can use a 1/2 inch quick link # 49135 which has a 3,300 pound safe working load limit. • Determining Best Safety Chain Replacement for Keystone Trailer
The length of chains you will need for your trailer will really depend on your particular setup. For example if the safety chain loops on your tow vehicle are spaced far apart, then you will want to make sure you have a bit more slack for making tight turns. Also keep in mind that you will need enough length to criss-cross them under the coupler. The easiest solution will be to simply take a quick measurement on your existing safety chains and go with a matching length for a replacement....

Two of these chains are rated for 10,800 pounds working load limit and 32,400 (16,200 lbs each) breaking strength, and should be sufficient for your towing limit of 10,000 lbs. That should work provided that in the process of shortening the chain to make 2 chains and when bending or flexing you do not stress the metal. If the metal is heated up or you see stress marks in the metal, fractures or discolored areas these are signs that the metal is fatigued and should not be used for this application. Of course the ideal solution is to just go ahead and use a new chain such as 2 of # 1483-535-04. Then you know you will have nothing to worry about. And of course,...
