Video Transcript for Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt single-hook coiled safety cables with S-hooks. Part number C80176. These safety cables are going to be a great replacement for your old, rusty or broken safety chains. Here you can see on our test drive the safety cables are not dragging or clanging around. They're perfectly tracking our tow vehicle. This will help them remain smooth and quiet.

One of our customers said they don't have to worry about pulling up on the campsite super early and waking everybody up. These are nice and quiet compared to noisy chains. They're a braided steel construction with a nylon coating, so we're not going to have any rust and corrosion. Like safety chains, these safety cables are going to act as a backup should your trailer become uncoupled from your tow vehicle. What's nice about these cables is the coil design is going to prevent any dragging when connected like you would see with most link styled chains. The same goes for when they're not in use.

They're not going to be resting in the mud or the moist grass furthermore causing corrosion. On one end, we have a large S type hook, so it's going to work with most safety chain connections. It even features a gate so it won't accidental become disconnected. On the other end, we have a loop so we can connect it to our trailer. Here you can see on this application, we have a welded on bracket with a bolt going through.

Now, you will have to provide your own hardware. Now, in connecting them to your tow loops on your hitch, it's a good idea to cross them just like you would your standard safety chains. This is going to create a cradle so it catches your coupler should it come disconnected from your tow vehicle. They feature a 7500 pound weight rating. The overall length from hook to hook is 42 inches long. Another great thing about the nylon coating is it's not going to harm or scratch your towing setup, and I personally like that it's not going to tear up my hands.

That's going to complete our look at the Curt single hook coiled safety cables with S-hooks. Part number C80176.

I have been using "Coil Cables" for over 30 years. I always tell people about them and suggest over any chain set out there. The coil keeps the cables from dragging the ground and getting chewed up by the road. I suggest the use of 1/2 inch, Grade 8 hardware to attach to your trailer. If you do not have Grade 8 hardware then jump into your car and go get some. Nothing less is sufficient for the task. Do not sell yourself short on attachments. Remember this rule: Your wife and children may be coming from the other direction. Make sure you are safe. etrailer, my thoughts about this company are simple. Great people and great products. In the past I have contacted the Customer Service group twice. Yes only twice in 10+ years of business. My questions and issues were solved fast and we were all happy. Another year has passed us and I have installed 5 more sets of Coil Cables. As long as Coil Cables are out there I will never go back to safety chains.

Ask the Experts about this Curt Safety Cables

  • Can I Use Safety Cables Instead of Safety Chains to Tow a 7300 lb Trailer
You can use safety cables instead of chains if your trailer is under the weight rating of the cable. The safety cables are made from nylon coated steel. I do not recommend using the Curt 7500 lb rated safety cable part # C80176 because that would be cutting it pretty close with the weight of your trailer. I recommend Blue Ox Hook Safety cables part # BX88197 that are rated for 10,000 lbs. The higher up you go in weight rating with safety cables the longer the cables get. The Blue Ox...

  • Are Safety Chains Needed When 7,000 lb Towing Trailer
Safety chains are required by law in many different places, and in order to find out about the specific regulations you will need to contact your local DMV. I will say that no matter what the law may be, safety chains are a very good idea, no matter what speed you are travelling because they ensure your trailer isn't going to become disconnected and cause a potentially serious accident. When considering the cost and ease of use for safety chains relative to what could happen without...

  • How Long Should My Safety Chains Be?
This is a great question, and it really depends on your setup. If the safety chain loops on your tow vehicle are spaced far apart then you will need more slack to make a tight turn than if they were closer together. I recommend that you connect your trailer to your tow vehicle and back your trailer up into a near jack-knife position. You'll then want to use a rope to go from the safety chain attachment points of your trailer to your tow vehicle and then measure the length of rope that...

  • Which Way Do the S-Hooks Need To Face When Attaching To Trailer Hitch Safety Chain Hoops
I have attached a photo for you below that shows which way the s-hooks should face when attached to the safety chain loops on a trailer hitch. The photo example is using the Curt Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables with S-Hooks part # C80176 for reference. That said, if the s-hooks have the keeper attached then it should not really matter which way they face.

  • Can Bolt be Used to Attach Safety Chains to Trailer Frame
Yes, it is perfectly fine to use a bolt to attach the safety chains of your trailer. I would recommend taking the chains to your local hardware store and getting the largest diameter Grade 8 bolt that will fit into the chain links.

  • Recommended Safety Chains for Curt Ball and Safety Chain Loops Kit # C60618
The opening width of the S-Hook on the Curt Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # C80176 referenced in your question is 3/4 inches and are not big enough to fit around the thicker side of the Curt Safety Chain Loops # C60618. These have a weight capacity of 7,500 pounds. For higher rated safety chains with clevis hooks that are compatible with the Curt Chain Loops, I recommend the Tow Ready Safety Chain Kit # 49150. These 44 inch chains have a weight capacity of 16,000 pounds. I recommend...

  • How to Install Safety Chains on a Trailer that Never Had Them Before

  • Trailer Safety Cables Will Not Fit Factory Class V Trailer Hitch on 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD
I am not sure what the gross trailer weight is on what you are towing with your 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 but I have some option that could work. We have quick link # 49135 which is rated for 10,000 pounds break strength and 3,300 pound safe working load limit and has a 1/2 inch diameter. We also have # C81830 with a 15/32 inch diameter rated for 7,600 pounds per hook. These items would allow you to use the chains you have but you would need to go by the capacity of the lowest rated component.

  • Will Coiled Safety Cables Catch the Trailer Tongue Like Chains Would
Using cables such as # C80176 in place of chains is no different than using chains. You would still cross the cables under the tongue so that they will catch the tongue should the trailer come off of the ball. The cables are steel underneath the coating and they are quite firm so the tongue weight of the trailer would not be able to overcome the tension of the cables when the trailer is pulled away from the vehicle in an off-the-ball event just like chains.

  • Are there Safety Cables that are Shorter than 42 Inches
We have some 40 inch cables from Dutton-Lainson # DL20119. These are the shortest safety cables that we have. We do have shorter safety chains; the shortest is # 2118-605-04 at 27 inches. I have linked the safety chains and cables for you.

  • How to Use the Curt Safety Chains # C80176 on a Trailer
There's really no secret to it. You would just run the cable that is installed on the right side of your trailer to the safety chain loop on the left side of your tow vehicle and vice versa for the other side. The # C80176 would install on your trailer in the same way as the safety chains that were previously on the trailer.

  • Can 42 Inch Long Coiled Safety Cables be Used in Place of 30 Inch Long Chains
Since the Curt safety cables # C80176 are coiled the extra length will not be a problem. The coiled design will keep them off of the ground! I have linked a video review below of these cables for you.

  • Are the C80176 Safety Cables Rated for 7,500 lbs Together or Individually

  • Weight Capacity of Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables
The Curt Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables with S-Hooks # C80176 has the weight capacity of 7500 lbs rated on using both safety cables. Individually, they would logically be 1/2 that capacity but using only one cable is not recommended so they are not individually rated at all.

  • Will Curt Safety Cables C80176 Work on a Trailer with 24 Inch Folding Tongue Extension
It really depends on where the safety chain mounts are on the trailer. At 42 inches long safety cables # C80176 are good for at least 21 inches but ultimately it depends on where the safety chain mounts are on the trailer side. If they are right behind the hinge then a 24 inch length would not be an issue. If the mounts are off to the side or much further back then there could be issues when making turns.

  • Can Curt Single Hook Safety Cables # C80176 Be Used with Factory Gooseneck Loops on 2016 Ram 3500
The cast iron safety chain loops on the bed of your 2016 Ram 3500 should measure about a 1/2 inch x 1 inch. If this is the case then the Curt Single Hook Coiled Safety Cables # C80176 will work perfectly. The S-hook features a 7/8 inch opening and there is enough length for the keeper latch to fully engage when hooked up to the loops. These have a weight capacity of 7,500 pounds. I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these cables that you can check out as well.

  • Will Curt Safety Chains/Cables Hold Up Well to Salt Spray for Snowmobile Trailer
Curt safety cables # C80176 would do fairly well for applications subjected to salt spray since the cables are coated in nylon and the hooks are zinc-coated. They wouldn't be as good as 100% stainless steel, if anyone made any, but they also cost a fraction of the price stainless would!

I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster about the RoadMaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions part # RM-910648-8 and they stated that each cable is rated for 8,000 lbs but that does not means it will give you 16,000 lbs in total as if one were to break, you will still only have a 8,000 lb capacity. This is going to be true for most safety cables and chains. If you need something higher then we have the Demco Safety Cable Extensions part # DM9523064 which are rated at 14,000 lbs and have a 12" extension....

If you like the look and function of the coiled safety cables then we do have the Curt # C80176 which are rated for 7,500 lbs. In order to install this towbar you will need to remove the bumper and attach it to the vehicle's core support somewhere. There are no speed restrictions for tow bars like the above. The 3/8" diameter s-hooks would be much too small for the safety chain loops on your 2-1/2" trailer hitch but the 1/2" ones should work well for you. They have a 7,500 lb capacity and measure 42" long. I have attached a review video for you.
