Colin: Hey everyone. It's Colin here at etrailer, and today we're going to take a look at Yakima's line of LockNLoad Platform roof racks. These roof racks are going to be a really nice step up from those standard two crossbar roof rack systems. It's going to allow you to maximize the amount of storage space on top of your roof, and add a bunch of different accessories as well. These are available in a variety of sizes, just go ahead and check out our website to see which one's going to best suit your needs. Or if you're not sure which one, then you should go ahead and enter your year, make, model of vehicle in our fit guide, and then it'll lead you to the best one. Now, I really like how Yakima made this rack customizable to fit your needs.

You can get a wide variety of gear mounts and brackets loaded up here. Whether you need to get the corner brackets for your coolers, spare tire carrier, maybe even a light bracket to put a light bar on the front of it. And it's still going to work for those other carriers, like your bike racks or your kayak carriers, maybe even a camping situation where you have the Yakima SkyRise tent. You can throw that up here as well. And if you don't really need any of those Yakima accessories, it's still going to do a great job of getting just the miscellaneous cargo, like our duffle bag strapped down and secure. There's even an option to get side rails installed around the perimeter of our LockNLoad rack.

Keep in mind that all of these accessories I'm mentioning are sold separately here at etrailer. Now the best comparison I can give you guys for the Yakima LockNLoad, is going to be the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform rack. Now I've worked with both racks extensively, they both do a great job in a lot of different areas. They both cover your roof as much as possible to make sure to maximize the storage space up top. They both have a lot of accessories you can put on them, whether it's a spare tire carrier, maybe even some raised side rails to make it more of a basket. Really the biggest difference is going to be that, on our LockNLoad the slats run side to side, and the Pioneer rack the slats run front to back.

And they both still have a lot of different T-slots to be able to mount a lot of different accessories up here. Now, one thing I do want to point out is that some rooftop accessories with the T-slot adapter are going to mount easier to our LockNLoad rack. And some other ones are going to mount easier to our Pioneer rack.Let me show you a closer look at that. Now right here for example, we do have a T-slot mounted bike rack. You can see we have two different adapters.

This is where the LockNLoad is going to be better for mounting purposes, because we can get one mounted in our T-slot and then get the other one mounted as well. The reason this wouldn't work too well with our Pioneer rack, we'll go ahead and get it out of our T-slot, and we'll just use this side of our LockNLoad for the example, this is how most of your T-slots are going to run for your Pioneer rack. You can see, we wouldn't be able to get both of them in this one T-slot. So if you have two different points on the front part, whether it's a bike rack or a kayak carrier, then the LockNLoad is going to be better suited. Now back here, we'll show you why the Pioneer rack could be better suited. If you have two different points on your carrier that is a fixed distance apart, so we have the back T-slot and then the front T-slots right here, then we would have to get it to line up perfectly for the distance between the horizontal slots on our LockNLoad. If we had the Pioneer rack, then we can just get them both in to the side T-slot by siding one in first and then the other. So again, just depending on the rooftop accessories you have, will determine which one would better suit your needs. The next rule of thumb is that if you're going to have more Yakima accessories, LockNLoad is probably going to be a better option and vice versa for the Pioneer rack. Now another advantage to having the slats go side to side rather than front of back, is going to be that we can use them as crossbars. So, if you have a Yakima accessory such as our high-speed bike rack, which is a clamp-on style bike rack, you're not going to have to worry about getting a new bike rack or even a T-slot adapter for this bike rack to make it work with the T-slots on your LockNLoad Platform rack. You can just get the steel straps underneath the slat just like you would on a crossbar, and you're going to be good to go.These things are really easy to install and what's nice is that there's a couple of different mounting options. Right now we're using the clamp kit, which is available separately or as a kit with the rack, to be able to clamp onto your Yakima crossbars or factory crossbars, if they should fit those. There's also another option to get an SL Adapter Kit, to which you can actually mount the rack itself to your TimberLine or SkyLine Towers. That's going to be for your raised side rails or for your fixed mounting points. Now your weight capacity is going to vary depending on how you have it mounted to your vehicle. The platform rack is nothing to worry about, it's going to be about how your crossbars or your towers you have it mounted to. And always be sure to double check with your vehicle's owner's manual. Make sure your roof can handle this weight. Now with the two crossbars we have, and we have four of these clamps on them, that's going to have a weight capacity of 220 pounds. That's going to be the same if we had four of the SL Adapters connecting it straight to our towers. Now, if we add in a set of towers or add in a crossbar, so totalling six, that's going to be a weight capacity of 330 pounds. And if you want to step it up and add four clamps on each side, totalling eight, that's going to be a weight capacity of 440 pounds. This platform rack is not just limited to the rooftop of your vehicle, it'll also mount to your Yakima EasyRider trailer. So if we wanted to add more versatility you could do so to your utility trailer. The rack does have a nice aerodynamic shape to it. That with the wind deflector on the bottom is going to help make sure it really cuts down on that wind noise and drag. Now we have had some customers ask if they're going to be able to access their trunk while this rack is installed on their vehicle. The answer is yes. And if you are having some issues to where when you open up your hatch you are making contact with the back of your LockNLoad, this rack is more than versatile enough to be able to adjust and scoot more towards the front of your vehicle. So, you're going to be able to access whatever you need out of your trunk. Now we've got a different load up top just to show you guys how you can customize this and organize it in a lot of different ways. It's really nice that it's going to be so versatile that it will accommodate a lot of different lifestyles, whether you're off-roading and camping, or maybe you just want to throw a couple of bikes and some cargo up there. Now with our LockNLoad Platform rack empty we can have a closer look at it. We have a really nice durable aluminum construction to our rack, it's going to make it both durable and lightweight. What's nice is that it's going to be a lot easier to abide by your roof rack's weight limit, or even your vehicle's roof weight limit, when you have the entire platform rack up here. We also have a really nice black powder coat finish, so it's going to add to its durability and help make it rust proof. And plus it just has a nice sleek look to our LockNLoad rack. Now, another thing I really like about this platform rack is that it literally covers our entire roof making sure to maximize the amount of storage space we have. And we're not really limited to just two crossbars. As you can see right here with our jet stream bars installed, that's just two spots where we can mount our accessories and just two T-slots. Whereas on top of our platform rack, you can see every slot has a T-slot with two entry points. The boarders all have T-slots to really make sure you can get as much up her as possible. All right, here is one of the ways we talked about that you can mount your LockNLoad rack, this is going to be mounted to your crossbars on your roof rack. Right now we have our Yakima JetStream bars installed. These are going to be your arrow shaped bars. Clamps are going to work great for those, but it'll also work for the Yakima HD bars, as well as any elliptical bars, round bars or square bars, and most factory roof racks as well. Now right here is going to be the other option we talked about to mount it to your roof. This is the SL Adapter, which connects our LockNLoad rack to our TimberLine or StreamLine Towers. This is in my opinion, a better option. I just personally like how it takes away that three to four inches that we're added onto our roof, because we had the cross bars in between our LockNLoad rack and our Towers. You can see how it just gives the rack a more low-profile look, which looks a lot cleaner in my opinion. And any low clearance situations, especially if you have a bigger SUV, you're not going to have to worry about as much. Well, thanks for tuning in guys, and I hope this information helps you out. But that's going to do it for our look at Yakima's line of LockNLoad Platform roof racks..

Review from a similar LockNLoad in Roof Rack

Mounted to the top of my 2018 F-150 Super Crew Cab. Had Yakima Baselines, with HD Bars, HD Bar Adapters and the locknload crossbar adapters. Wished I was able to install it without crossbars as it requires that I buy them, also adds a bit of height to the the locknload as well. Very well built, had my wife (125lbs) walking around on it after I mounted the locknload. Took about an hour to assemble the locknload and maybe another hour or two of adjusting the bars to where I wanted the locknload to sit on the roof. Other than it looks a bit too high I do love them. Will probably see what I can do about lowering the locknload in the future.

Review from a similar LockNLoad in Roof Rack

Love it! Used it on our Subaru Outback when we wanted a firmer and wider platform than the stock crossbars. The platform is even more useful than I thought because you can mount accessories (e.g., canoe carriers) all the way to the edge if you use the T-channel to secure them. I would've probably gotten one size smaller had I realized that.

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Roof Rack

  • Largest Yakima LockNLoad Platform That Fits 2 Roof Rack Crossbars
I checked with Yakima and the largest LockNLoad Platform Tray that will work with a roof rack system with two crossbars is the 60" Long x 54" Wide Yakima LockNLoad Platform Roof Tray # Y05045. To mount this tray to your BMW you will need the Crossbar Clamps for Yakima LockNLoad Platform # Y05039. The 84" Long x 49" Wide LockNLoad Platform # Y05047 does require at least three crossbars to mount. Using less than that would make it unstable, and not only void the warranty, but potentially...
