Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Installation - 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look at our Rhino-Rack roof rack system for the 49 inch long crossbars and the fit kit for your flush side rails here on our 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. So you've got this large Jeep with a large capacity and you can carry around a bunch of people. But what if you also wanna carry around a bunch of different accessories, like bike racks, a roof basket, a roof box, or even a rooftop tent. What you then need is a roof rack system kind of like this one. So this is the Rhino-Rack roof rack system with the 49 inch long crossbars.

It has, or it creates a good surface for those different accessories. And we'll talk about how it fits on your Jeep Grand Cherokee L. With the 49 inch long crossbars, it sticks a little bit past your raised rails but not past your vehicle. So that's gonna be called overhang. You measure from the end of the tower to right before the end cap, that's 3 and 3 3/4 inches.

If you wanna carry, let's say kayak carriers with load assists like the Thule Hullavator that requires a certain overhang, you might wanna even get the 54 inch long crossbars to fully maximize your crossbar space. So why using your roof rack system This is another reason you might want a little bit more overhang. I'm on the short side but this is also a larger vehicle. So this is how far you would have to reach to get your accessories up onto your roof before getting onto your car. Now, this also has a fixed crossbar spread.

So you measure from one crossbar to another and it's 27 and 3/4 inches apart. So since it's fixed mounting points, just double check your accessories and make sure that that crossbar spread can work for them. Now let's take some other measurements. You have a glass roof on your Grand Cherokee L so you'll wanna make sure you have enough clearance. So there's two clearance measurements.

One is measuring from the roof to the bottom of the crossbar, and I have it at about three inches or just a little less than three inches. That's how much space you have for clamps that go around your crossbars. So let's say you have the more entry level ones that have U-bolts and wing nuts. You wanna make sure that that's enough space. This is pretty average for a roof rack. The next measurement is gonna be the height added to top of the roof. So the top of the crossbar is gonna sit a little past 3 and 3 3/4 inches above the roof. So if you have, let's say accessories and you wanna carry around your skis and snowboards and those have extra tall bindings. That's how much clearance you have before you hit the roof. If that's not enough for your accessories, you may wanna check out our carriers that give you that extra lift. These are vortex aero bars with the vortex strips on top covering the T-track channel. And they are aero bars, which means that compared to your traditional round or square crossbars, it could be kind of noisy and it had a lot of wind drag. These are more aerodynamic. And that way, when you're driving down the highway and you don't have other accessories on here, it doesn't have as much wind noise for wind drag. But these being 49 inch long crossbars, you can't mount your clamps everywhere. You'll have to be mindful of where the rails are and where your towers are unless you're using T-track mounted accessories. So when you lift these up, you gain access to that and then you can use the entire crossbar to mount your items, that way, if you want them further out towards the end, you can do so. Now for the security features. Your crossbars are gonna have this plastic end cap and then you're gonna have this included plastic tool. So I have it in the unlocked position. I can pop that out, turn that and it's now the locked position. You can upgrade these to metal lock cores, but if you do, make sure to get a bunch of extras so you can match them with the included lock cores on your Rhino-Rack tower. So this one is keyed alike for the four towers. And if you wanna add on the crossbar ends too, make sure you get the lock cores to key those alike. I'm actually a big fan of how nicely the towers fit around our flush side rail. You do have this rubber sleeve that goes around your tower and then just creates that nice smooth surface so that water can come down. But it also has a sleek look on top of your Cherokee L. So if you use our etrailer fit guide, you can get the right fit for you and your vehicle. So we have this kit, which includes the crossbars, the towers and the fit kit, as well as the things that you need to tighten it down. But I use some extra tools just to make my life a little bit easier. One is the Moki doorstep. I clip this into the door, give me an extra height and traction, especially helpful on this larger vehicle. I also use a 10 millimeter open head wrench and that's a ratchet wrench, don't forget your tape measure to make sure your crossbars are aligned. We also have a flathead screwdriver and a 3/16 wrench to tighten things down. Now, after we use all that, let's take a look at the install. So the install process is a little bit involved. So that's what this video is for. I'm gonna guide you through that process so that you can do this at home too. Now we have the towers. We have end caps. We have two different types of screws. We have our fit kit and we have our crossbar. So we're gonna combine all of that and get that installed on our Jeep Grand Cherokee L. First, you need to prep your Jeep. So whether you're installing up high in your platform or cross bars, you're gonna use different mounting holes. So you're gonna find that right here, use the front and the middle for your crossbars. Use a flathead screw driver just to pop that cap out. And that will prep it for mounting a crossbar. Also, I go ahead and put a towel there on the roof. That way, when you're working with tools you're not scratching up your roof. So now you have your fit kit. So this has your metal bracket and then it has your rubber sleeve. So that rubber sleeve just goes around that metal bracket and gives it a little bit of a cushion because this is what's sitting on top of your flush rail. Now line up that bracket over there on your flush rail. And you're just gonna smush down on that sleeve just to make sure it's flush then get your two bolts. And these are the one that use an Allen key and just thread those in there to secure that metal bracket. So you can hand tighten that down but you also have an included tool. I actually use a 3/16 hex bit, that way it's just easier to tighten down. Just make sure you don't over torque it. You'll feel the flush rail bend. So just make sure that's lined up. Then you get your towers and you set up your crossbar. So this should already have the plate on it because this is what you're going to use to slide into the crossbar. So measuring things out and then tightening them down in the right order is probably gonna be the trickiest part about this install. So what I do is I actually measure from the mounting holes on our roof. So it's gonna be 42 inches apart center to center. And then I just match that up with our towers, make sure they're 42 inches apart center to center. And then that's where I tighten down the towers to the crossbar. So now you're gonna get your crossbar and your towers and set them in those brackets. And then you're gonna get your hex head screws. Don't forget to put the split washer and flat washer on it. Drop it through the top of the tower and secure that tower to your metal bracket. You are going to use a 10 millimeter open wrench to tighten that down. And your final step is just pop that end cap for your tower end. Use the key to lock and secure. Do that for all four towers. Don't forget the end caps for your crossbars. Once you've done that, double check that everything is nice and secure. That's it for the install, you're ready to load this up and hit the road. So my personal thoughts about the Rhino-Rack roof rack system is while it does take a little bit of time and effort and thought to install the first time, after that you have a sleek and durable system. So this does have 165 pound weight capacity for different types of accessories and cargo. It doesn't sit too far out past the vehicle. I would prefer the 54 inch long crossbars but it is more of a personal aesthetic choice. Definitely solid with the T-track channels and the included locks. I think this would be a great choice for your Jeep Grand Cherokee L. And this right here was a look at the Rhino-Rack roof rack system with the 49 inch long crossbars, the towers for your fixed mounting points and the custom fit kit for your 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L..

What a great experience it was working with etrailer.com and Vicky N, in particular. I needed a roof rack system for my daughter's vehicle and Vicky was very knowledgeable and helpful. Unfortunately, the product I originally wanted was backordered but Vicky was able to guide me to a system that should work as well. She was also reassuring that, if the mounting system needed to be exchanged for a different configuration, it would be no problem to exchange it Additionally, the rack arrived within two days and appears to be the correct one. Thus far, I have nothing but praise for etrailer.com and would not hesitate to shop here again. Thanks, Vicky!

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The video on etrailer says that the top of these rails sit just under 4 inches from the roof of a grand cherokee. In fact the rails are just over 4.5 inches. Our extra low profile roof box bumps the weather stripping above the garage at this height. This will work since the only other option is not parking in the garage but it would have been nice to have the correct information. I also expected the locks on the platforms and endcaps to be matched. Also not a big deal, but it would have been a bonus to have just one set of keys. Overall the rack seems sturdy and high quality. It was a pain to get the mounting screws on the rails aligned just right. This is a jeep issue but it would be nice to have a bolt cover or other way to secure the entire rack to the car. As it is, anybody with a hex key can detach the whole rack.

Buick Enclave

Rhino rack crossbars restrict moon roof operations when installed (will only open half way) on a '18 buik enclave. Not a deal breaker but something we were not aware of at purchase when researching available options for our make and model. Crossbars fit and work as expected and I do like the lower profile look over the factor sourced options I see on road

All parts arrived on time and undamaged, and installation was pretty straightforward and easy.

I purchased the full set of cross bars, legs, end caps, kayak carrier, and antenna mount for my 2019 Grand Cherokee. I am pleased. These products are by far one of the best after market items you get. The quality is top shelf. Thank you etrailer for carrying these products from Rhino Rack.

Jeep

Time consuming to assemble, once you hit 25 mph you can hear a faint whistle from the sound bar. Double checked all plugs to confirm there were no gaps in the top or bottom rubber but noise continues. Easy to remove so decision made the use only when there is a need vs leaving on my jeep full time. Disappointed.

Comments
It is not unheard of to have whistling with a roof rack, even with the aero shaped bars. Normally I would recommend checking to make sure that all the rubber strips are securely installed, however I see that you have already done that. I have another solution for you. I recommend adding on a fairing such as part # RRRF3
Rhino-Rack Fairing for Roof Racks - 44" Long
$94.94
to help the air flow to move up over the rack which helps to eliminate the whistling noise.

Good Service. These were purchased as lower profile legs for Aero bars or a platform. They fit backbone roof castings by trimming the small tabs, sanding the base flat and crafting rubber gaskets.

I like the racks. They were extremely difficult for Me to install. I had trouble getting them to line up from left to right with the factory holes on my Honda Crv Touring. Also, I am getting a great deal of road noise but I am afraid to remove them for the summer in case they are difficult to reinstall for ski season.

2020 Mazda CX-5

Easy to install on Mazda CX-5-used a measuring tape, utility knife, small wrench, and flat screw driver (taped end to remove roof weather strip) . A second set of hands was helpful as well. I did have to drill a hole into the weather strip so that it fits over the attachment bolt.
My first time installing a roof rack. It’s light weight and doesn’t create a lot of wind noise. The bars themselves have a weatherstrip you install which I’d rather was not the case due to Human error-longevity of weather seal. I’ll be using it to transport a kayak. We’ll see how long this holds up.

Cadillac

I had tried to buy OEM Cross Bars for my '21 Cadillac XT6, but no one had them, and it looked like a long term problem of availability from Cadillac. So- after ordering and receiving some cheap bars that the ad on (that auction site) said were a "perfect fit", and finding them to be 1/2" short of reaching between the rails, then returning them for credit (but not for the shipping!), I contacted etrailer.

I have a Thule Cargo Box that I bought from them in 2016. I use this for one long trip (1900 miles each way, every year.)

Kaylyn at etrailer researched quite extensively for cross bars that would meet my needs: strong, nice appearance and above all quiet! She got back to me a day later, recommending Rhino Rack Aero Bars, and the attachments as being the best available. She cautioned me that (like any aftermarket bars) they would not be as quiet as OEM flush fit bars. I value honesty.

I installed them, and found the kit to be very complete. See the pictures- it looks great as far as I am concerned. And they are virtually silent at up to 70 MPH (I'll try them faster when we leave!). One caution: do not forget the plastic "Measuring Strips"- they are IN the bars, and are marked for measuring. But the real purpose is to seal the BOTTOM of the cross bars to eliminate "loud whistling"- ask how I know.

by:

Instructions could have been more clear. The drawings didn’t match what I was sent, and I needed a specific small wrench to get these secured onto my car. I couldn’t use a standard socket wrench, which is what was called for.

by:

Bought all parts for complete Rhino Rack roof rack for my 2022 Kia Soul Turbo. I got the 46" Vortex Aero Crossbars that were originally suggested on the etrailer website instead of the 54" listed on the RR website. The 46" bars work the best for me. The 54" would be wider than the car. All parts are well engineered. Other reviews have been critical of the finish on the bars as being easy to scratch. I think that is one area where the quality could be improved. Installation was a little more involved than I anticipated but still a doable DIY. I think the RCL leg system is probably the most challenging to install. I have ordered quit a few items from etrailer, and as previously experienced, all etrailer staff that I interacted with were very friendly, helpful and professional.

by:

Locks work very well. As advertised. Once the cross rails are installed these are easy to add at the end caps of the cross rails.

2019 Toyota Highlander

I recently purchased the Rhino rack below with these boat supports:
Rhino-Rack Nautic 581 Rear Loading Kayak Carrier - Saddle Style - Rear Loading - Channel Mount
Item # RR581

Also, I attached a Yakima Jaylow kayak carrier, all to a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

On the 54 inch aero bars, I was able to carry a Hobie Compass Duo kayak (35" beam, carried flat on the Rhino pads) and West Marine Pompano 120 (28" beam, propped up as shown on the Jaylow racks). To have enough width, the Jaylows and the Rhino pads are mounted as far out as they can go, and the straps are looped back under the rack pillars on the car.

The bow and stern were secured with hood loops on each side (front diagonal straps on the Hobie), on the front placed under the hood where shown (this is the only place I could find a good metal-metal contact under the hood, and no electronics in the way), and in the back, tucked under the rear door.

We did a 500 mile round trip to the beach and back, with no problems at all with the mounts. Little noise, no movement. My only recommendation is to figure out some kind of load assist for the large tandem kayak, to make it easier if one of the folks loading is under 5'8" in height or so. We worked it out, but only after a few failed attempts (especially when the boat is wet, and loaders are tired).

Carol C at etrailer provided thoughtful, expert, and knowledgeable tech support for our purchase. Many thanks!

by:

So far, so good. Assembly and installation was a breeze. Seems like a sturdy, product with many years of life in its future.

by:

Very easy to setup and put together. My experience as a first time buyer from etrailer was perfect a bit expensive but you get what you pay for. I will definitely be shopping from yall throughout the years. Thank you, also thank you for making videos it made the process so much easier.

Great part of the package. I like that they put all the parts together to fit my car in one click. Easy to install and feels solid.

Great rack except for the annoying wind noise. Any ideas as to how to fix or at least reduce the wind noise?

One way to reduce the noise from your roof rack is by using a fairing, like the Rhino-Rack Fairing for Roof Racks - 44 Long Part # RRRF3

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

I had to replace the Thule rack on my 2019 Santa Fe to mount a roof top tent. I like the Thule it's a good rack system and it's quiet, but as it turns out the weight capacity was too limiting. I switched to a Rhino rack.
The Rhino rack kit was super easy to install. I was surprised it was much simpler than the Thule. The Rhino rack is rated at 165 lbs, which is an additional 45 lbs of weight capacity. I went with the solid black instead of the aluminum. It looks better on my Santa Fe. The Rhino rack is a little nosier than the Thule, but I should be able to correct it myself by covering the exposed channels.

There's one lesson learned I'd like to pass along. When you see a Roof Rack advertised on any website (including the manufacturer's)pay close attention to the total load capacity. You'll often see the limit for the cross-bars used as the weight capacity. However, if the mounting kit has a lesser load rating that's the total load capacity. For example: the Thule cross-bars were rated at 220 lbs but the mounting kit was rated at 120 lbs. (net 120 lbs capacity) The Rhino cross-bar is rated at 225 lbs and the mounting kit is rated at 165lbs (net capacity 165 lbs).
Either way you go, you can't beat etrailer for customer service before and after the sale.

  • Compatibility of Longer Rhino-Rack Crossbars on 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The answer is yes. You can use the 54 inch crossbars instead of the 49 inch crossbars on a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Longer crossbars only become an issue (legally) when they extend past the side mirrors in some states. If you were to go any larger you may have mounting channel length issues as the channel underneath doesn't run the full length of the bar like the top channel does. You will simply want the following: Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 54"...

All of the roof racks for your 2014 CRV will have the fixed mounting points you referenced that are 31-3/4 inch spread. Yes, going from a Mazda CX-5 to a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L will require the 49" Vortex Aero Crossbars, part # RRVA126B-2.
