Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2020 Honda CR-V

Hey, everybody. Today we're going to be going over and showing you how to install the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero crossbar system here on our 2020 Honda CRV.So here's what our roof rack system is going to look like installed. As you can see here, Rhino-Rack uses these nice aero-shaped crossbars, which are going to do a couple different things for us. Number one, the aero shape is really going to help cut down on wind noise. We're not going to have that whistling sound here with our crossbars. And, number two, we're not going to have near as much drag.

Therefore, we're not really going to have to worry about losing as many miles per gallon when we're driving out on the highway. So this particular system here is going to install on our CRV here with some door clips. We have these metal clips here, which are rubber coated, so they're not going to have to worry about scratching or dinging up the vehicle. But they're going to install inside the door jamb here, which is what secures the crossbars to the roof. It's nice and sturdy, and, again, all our parts are rubber coated here, so you don't have to worry about dinging or damaging the vehicle. So, right now, we have the black crossbars that Rhino-Rack offers. However, there's also a silver crossbar option as well, so whichever you're going to feel is going to blend in better with your vehicle, this is the route I recommend choosing. So adding a roof rack to your CRV, it's going to be an excellent option.

It's going to make our vehicle much more versatile. We're going to be able to set a cargo box up here if we need to free some space inside the vehicle, or we're going to be hitting the slopes, we need a place to carry our skis. We can also use these with a other wide variety of accessories, such as a cargo basket. We have bike racks that go up here as well as kayak racks. So if you're interested in any of these items, we have a large selection here at etrailer.

I definitely recommend you check these out.So, one thing I really like about the Rhino-Rack roof rack systems are they really give you some top-of-the-line features and a nice quality, affordable price. Number one, like most of the other top-of-the-line systems, we have integrated channels in the top of our crossbars. And what this does is it essentially makes it possible for using channel-mounted accessories, which are a little bit easier to attach than the wraparound ones that you may be used to. We're also going to get locking mechanisms on our crossbars and locking mechanisms on our mounting feet. Now, normally, the locking mechanisms for some of the other top-tier options, such as Thule and Yakima, these are actually sold separately, and they're not cheap, either.

But with the Rhino-Rack, we're going to get plastic locks for the crossbars, which prevent the encapturing being removed, and we're going to get metal locks here at the mounting feet all included with no added fee. Keep in mind, if you would like to opt for metal locks, you can replace the plastic locks in the crossbars with metal locks. Those are, however, sold separately. So, a couple numbers to go over with you. Number one, the length of our crossbars, it's going to be 54 inches, so we're going to have plenty of space for multiple rooftop accessories. In regards to weight, we're going to have a 165-pound capacity. So, again, we can really pile stuff on top of these crossbars without have to worry about any damage to our vehicle or the roof rack components. And, last, I like to give our customers a measurement, the distance from the top of the roof to the bottom of the crossbar. This may vary slightly from application to application, but we're going to get about three and three-quarter inches. So another question we get here at etrailer is they're wondering if they can open their sunroof with the roof rack installed. And as you're about to see, that's not going to be any issue at all for the system. There'll be no interference at all.So now that we've gone over some features, let's go ahead and jump into installation so we can show you how it's done. So the first part of our installation, we want to get our fit kit laid out in front of us, along with our mounting feet and our crossbar here. So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to take a look at the instructions for the fit kit, and they're going to give us a measurement that we need to cut this strip for. So, basically, we just have it in here now just as a reference, but, basically, we're going to cut this strip here to a certain measurement that they give us. We'll slide that all the way over here. And this measurement is essentially going to let us know how far inward we need to place our mounting foot. So that's going to be our first step.Once we get that done, we can begin assembling our mounting foot and get ready to install it on the crossbar. Now if you haven't already done so, we're going to need to remove the end cap on our crossbar here. In order to do that, it's super simple. You're going to get a little key that comes in our kit here, and we'll simply rotate this once we insert in to the unlocked position. We have locked and unlocked. And then we can just slide the end cap off.But now what we're going to do is we're going to take our pad here that comes with our fit kit. We're going to install this onto our mounting foot. Now we need to be careful, because these pads and our mounting feet are going to be labeled front and rear and left and right. So we need to make sure that we have the correct one, depending on which side of the vehicle we're working on and whether we're doing the front or back.So now what we're going to do is we're actually going to be installing our foot here on our rubber fit kit. You'll just simply press it down to lock it in place. Now we're going to take our metal door clip here. These aren't labeled side to side or front to rear, so it doesn't matter which one we grab. But if we take a look on the inside of our mounting foot here, we're going to see our little threaded nut. What we need to do is we need to place our fit kit in there like so, and then we're going to come back with our bolt here. We're just going to loosely thread that in. We should be able to thread it in by hand for now, but we're also going to have our tool in our kit here to tighten it down further when needed. So now we're going to pay attention to our little channel nut here. On the bottom of the side, we're going to have a hex screw. We're going to loosen this now to about the end of our threaded block here. We don't want to take it completely off. And then we're going to go ahead and slide our mounting foot with our fit kit attached into the channels here. We're going to stop here when we've reached our rubber strip. If you remember, we measured and cut that to the correct location according to our instructions. Now we may need to maneuver this little metal block here a little bit to get it to line up within our channels, but once we do, it's pretty easy. It just slides on. And then we're going to butt it up to our strip here, whatever that measurement was, and then we can go ahead and take our handle here. We're going to go ahead and tighten that down. We're going to be torquing it down as well. Now when it's going to be properly torqued, you can see our handle is actually bent now, that's going to straighten up when we reach the proper torque. And there we go.Now we're going to reinstall our end cap here. Simply press it into place. Use our little blue key here to turn it, and it should be locked now. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side of our crossbar here. So you can see we have our front crossbar already installed for you guys. And, basically, what we're going to be doing is we're going to get some measurements in our instructions again. We're going to get an A measurement, and we're going to get a B measurement. So our A measurement, we're going to take from the center of our door jamb on the B pillar here. We're going to measure forward the amount that they tell us to in our instructions. That's going to line up with the center of our crossbar, and that'll be for our A measurement. Our B measurement will then be from the center of the crossbar on the front one to the center of the crossbar on our rear one. So we'll use the measurements that come provided. And then what we'll do here, I've already done it for you guys, but go ahead and take a piece of tape and just mark out where the center of our crossbar needs to go. So now with our piece of tape in place, we know where we can set our crossbar assembly. We'll go ahead and lift it up now so we can set it into position. Now we'll take our crossbar assembly alignment with the mark that we've made. We're going to open up our door and loosely secure our fit clip.So I don't have this bolt completely tightened down. We've just snugged it up. We'll go ahead and jump onto the other side. We'll tighten that bolt there, and then we'll come back here and torque this one down. So now once we have both of our bolts torqued, we can take our locking end cap. You're going to see two tabs here. We'll line up with the tabs in our mounting feet, press it into place. We'll take our key here, and we can lock it to secure it. I'll repeat this process on the other side and for our forward most crossbar. And that'll do it today for our look and installation of the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero crossbar system here on our 2020 Honda CRV.

Look how nice my crossbars look? I ordered these and paid extra for expedited shipping so that I could have them to put a luggage carrier on my roof. The legs for the crossbars never showed up and the crossbars came late as well. I ran out and got a trailer hitch basket for extra storage. Tack on an extra $[XX] in addition to the extra $$ for fast shipping and I'm $[XX] into these crossbars that I couldn't use for their intended purpose. I called early enough that the company could have overnighted the legs but they just kept blaming UPS. Very disappointed.

Lexus IS 250

This roof rack works great! At first I was skeptical about putting a rack on my IS250, but it couldn't have turned out better. Paired with the Yakima Highroad, I can easily transport my bikes around without worrying about anything coming loose while driving. The installation instructions for the legs and bars are pretty straightforward. Takes about 30-45 minutes total to install.

The Rhino system works great the way it is. I'm going camping next week and took the two bars out of the closet and right onto the car. No adjustments were needed. The feet fell right into the roof line where I initially set it up. All I had to do was clamp it down. Last weekend I had the basket up there with two fully loaded RTIC coolers probably pushing 150 pounds with no problems. For this trip I have my Yakima easy load bike racks on the roof. They clamped right onto the Rhino bars and they're in a much better position for loading and unloading than my last truck.

I'm very happy with the product and not expecting anything else. Thanks for following up.

Toyota Camry

I bought this last yr to haul my kayaks on my Toyota camry. Being 5'2", getting them on top of my SUV was next to impossible for me and my daughters. Since then, I have traveled from Michigan, all the way to the west coast with two 13' ft kayaks. These racks have been absolutely perfect in every aspect. I mounted them myself, and checked them regularly to see if they needed adjusted. Not once did they loosen or move. They with stood Traveling with speed limits reaching 80 mph on I84, along with the windy weather on our cross-country trip. My car moved around from the high winds, and the racks stayed put. These racks have by far reached and surpassed every expectation I had when purchasing them. I would not recommend another. Only thing I would recommend is showing installation for both front and back bars, since the measurements are slightly different for both. As I had to figure this out my self, after watching the installation video. Thank you Rhino for providing such a high quality product.

I purchased Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars with Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs (RRRLKVA) and Fit Kit (DK284) for my 2020 Honda CR-V EX Hybrid. The rack was easy to assemble and took about an hour. The only tool not supplied that you need is a sharp knife or scissors to cut the rubber strips to length. Once assembled, the installation took about 30 minutes, making sure to measure accurately for placement. I used blue painter's tape to initially mark the locations. I then placed the white marking arrows (supplied) to align with the marks on the tape. I then removed the tape, placed the racks aligned with the arrows, and tightened the clamps.

This product seems well made and engineered (I'm a retired mechanical engineer). Kudos to Rhino-Rack and to etrailer for selling it.

I used my rack to transport two Kayaks to Baxter State Park in Maine, a trip of over 3 hours, a combination of highway, rural roads and dirt roads. The rack performed well. Worth the purchase.

After a year, the rack is still in very top shape, easy to remove for the winter since I use is only for Kayaks in the summer, easy reinstall. One thing that barely need to be mentioned, some the noise is created on the side tips when driving moderately *cough* *cough*, but it is to be expected since it doesnt serve for aerodynamic :

Seamless installation. The instructions were well thought out and easy to follow. A year after installation the contact points are solid as when first installed. The rack system matches the truck and gives it a great look.

This rack is a great product and has worked great for the kayaks I hauled across the country over the last year. Only things I can complain about is the extra wind noise with them on, and the lack of strap anchors. Otherwise, has worked great for me.

Choosing a system for transporting my new (to me, they're actually used) kayaks was TOUGH. I love my little 2017 Honda Fit, and I knew I would love my new kayaks when I got them. I don't want anything bad to happen to either! Also, my car is small and the kayaks are fairly large, comparatively. I've strapped a lot of things to a lot of vehicles, but this is going to be a long term relationship, so I wanted to get it right the first time.

I've been researching and reading reviews for months, but I got confirmation that the kayaks were ready for pickup, so I needed to make a decision! I ultimately pulled the trigger on the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars with the 2500 Series Legs and Custom DK Fit Kit for my naked roof car and the Rhino-Rack Nautic Stack Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs.

I placed my order on 09/15/21 at 6 PM. The estimated delivery date was 09/23/21, which made me a little sad. I really wanted to pick up my boats on Sunday, 09/19/21, but I figured I'd waited THIS long, I could probably handle waiting another week. I was very pleasantly surprised to receive an email at 8 PM the same evening notifying me that my order had shipped. AND, even better, the UPS tracking was showing delivery on 09/18/21 by 7PM! I was beyond excited, but didn't get my hopes up because shipping has been pretty hit or miss since well before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, UPS delivered my package just before noon on Saturday, which was amazing!

I got everything unpacked and reviewed to ensure that I had all I would need to assemble the system - check. Nothing missing, which is always an auspicious start. Then I started reading the instructions - UGH. This is (so far) the ONLY thing I have to complain about. I have put together furniture that had clearer instructions. I probably should have gone to Google to find a [online] video, but I powered through with the instructions provided. Since I've never put together or used a roof rack before, I didn't really know what the final outcome should look like, so that made interpreting the instructions very difficult - the pictures were not super clear, and the accompanying text did not improve the situation. Now that I know what it looks like assembled, I get it, but at the time it was rough. I estimated it took me about 2 hours to get the rack assembled and secured to my car, and towards the end my fiancé arrived and helped me to realize that the foot pads were not properly attached to the feet, which made a huge difference! The kayak carrier was much easier to install, taking maybe 15 additional minutes.

The foot pads rest in the groove on the edge of the roof, I assume over the frame of the car. There's absolutely no flex in the roof where the feet sit. The hook part of the clamp rests against the metal of the car, under the rubber seal, so I don't foresee any potential issues with the seal as a result of the rack. The doors close as normal, and the rack has no movement whatsoever once tightened down. I've now used it as a handle to pull myself up towards the roof a few times (I'm about 190 lbs), and I feel totally confident that it's not going anywhere. I now have ideas about how to use the rack to haul around the larger stuff that won't fit INSIDE my car (which isn't much - I HIGHLY recommend this car!).

So, the big question - how'd it go with the kayaks?

In short - perfection! I was slightly concerned about the boats overhanging the front or back of my car, as they're 12.5 ft long and my car is just over 13 ft long. Eeeeek! I needn't have worried. They fit like a dream, and even without bow or stern tie downs were very secure during our trip home. We took local roads instead of the highway because we didn't tie down the bow and stern, so we probably didn't go over 40 ish MPH, but I saw absolutely no lift (I can see the ends of the boats out of the front windshield). I will be using those tie downs in the future, and anticipate no issues with highway speeds under those conditions.

Obviously, only time will tell how everything holds up/works out, but at this stage, I am extremely pleased with my decision and am looking forward to many kayaking adventures to come! I only have one picture at this point, but may take a few more and add them so anyone else considering a similar setup knows what they'll be getting.

I am very pleassed with our rhino rack serieus 2500 roof rack. It is very sturdy. We also like the idea that it is removeable and very easy to take on and off. We bought 2 sets of Malone J Pro 2 Kayak Carriers from another company that were suppose to fit with the rhino rack but the bolts were too short. Just a warning if you were planning to get those to go with the rhino rack. We were able to contact Malone and they sent us longer bolts so they should fit now.

This rack has served me well during the past year. Easy to mount and great for kayak racks in the summer snd ski racks in the winter.

2018 Ram 2500

I purchased the complete 2500 Series system which included the crossbars, legs and fit kit for my 2018 Honda Fit so I could transport my kayak.. They were well packaged and their quality is quite evident. I did struggle a little following the assembly instructions but with some patience and watching a video it went well. Two items to be aware of. The front and rear leg clamps are of different lengths with the longer clamps going on the rear crossbar. The other issue was positioning the crossbars. After following the measurements for attaching the legs to the crossbars it was quite clear that the measurement for the rear crossbar was wrong. Placing the legs as instructed didn't allow the rear crossbars to be the 29 17/32 inches from the front crossbar but required me to move it back to 31 1/2 inches. There is a very faint whistle while driving around 30 to 35 mph but it's not annoying. I was so pleased with the fit and finish I went ahead and purchased the Rhino Rack S-loader to make it easier for me to lift my kayak onto the crossbars. I would definitely recommend both items.

This rack (including these legs) is the best arrangement for taking our bikes camping with our fifth wheel camper we could have imagined. After trying bike racks on the back of our camper and inside our camper, this rack finally is a safe way to transport our bikes with us. It secures the bikes using the tires and no more damage to bikes. It took a few times to figure out a way to get the bikes on the roof easily. I built a small 15" by 72" temporary platform for the front of the bed to stand on that can be easily slid under the hitch when not in use. WE LOVE THIS RACK.

by:

This is a terrible fit on my car. The measurements they gave me for my vehicle were inaccurate. The rack itself is overpriced. It has come off my roof several times since I purchased it. Not to mention it has left several scratches in the paint on my roof. I could not be more disappointed.

Comments
Roof racks are designed to attach to vehicles using a fit kit that includes rubber pads to prevent damage to the vehicle. You will want to use the manual to install the fit kits at the measured location and also to tighten it down a little at time from each side. This helps to prevent scratches to the vehicle.

Ford F-250 Super Duty

I was really looking forward to this rack as I'll be running my roof tent on it. Unfortunately it came damaged, since the damage was limited to the end caps I went ahead and mounted it.
The rack itself looks slick, comes with little measuring sticks to make sure you install it straight the first time, comes with all the tools required.
So thats about it for good stuff.
Wind noise , to give you an idea how bad it is I have this on a old f250 with a bad muffler and 33in mud tires and its still almost intolerable! It's like they put it in a wind tunnel and tuned for as much noise as possible.
I also ordered a roof bag at the same time , I wasn't expecting much from it . It's a bag with a zipper and straps. Sadly the hardware is junk and I snapped a buckle with some light tensioning.
Customer service
Initial service was as good or better than expected. Things went downhill when the damage was reported. I told the rep I was only at a US address for the next 10days and if the replacement was going to take longer than that would they ship it to Canada?
The answer was no, they won't ship it to Canada (talking about a couple pieces of plastic you could stick in the mail for $2.00). They then proceeded to slowplay the authorisation for the replacement parts and shipped them the day I told them was my last day to receive them.
So to sum it all up I am the happy owner of one of the loudest racks on the planet that looks sketchy due to the shipping damage. A roof pack that will probably end up at the dump after one extended trip.
Not likely to be a repeat customer!

2012 Toyota Corolla

I've been using the track for 12 months to haul kayaks around on my '21 Toyota Corolla.

Installation was easy, and the tracks feel as solid as if they came installed at the factory. Plan on spending 30+/- minutes to install them.

Wind noise is minimal, and I haven't noticed a significant change in fuel consumption.

Build quality is very good.

I have recommended this rack to friends and family.

I bought this roof rack to transport two 10'6'' kayaks on top of a Ram 2500 short bed. Easy install, and the rack has been working fine. I double strap the kayaks to ensure stability. This rack permits me to carry the kayaks while pulling a 34' fifth wheel.

Worked great for our 12 ft kayaks. No issues after 16,000 mile trip with high speeds, adverse weather, and high crosswinds.

I picked up the RR 2500 and Aero Bar for my 2021 Honda CRV. The fit was perfect. Took less than an hour (took my time). Nice, solid product. Well built. I'm going to get the canoe-attaching kit as well. I love that the racks are easy to put on and take off, since I don't intend to leave it on all the time. The shipper (not etrailer) somehow destroyed the boxes with the feet and the keys were lost. It took a little back and forth and sending in my pictures, but I was sent the replacement keys in a couple of weeks...good, responsive customer service! I'd recommend!

etrailer.com's videos and additional customer support made the purchase of a Rhino Rack system from them for our 2010 Malibu a no brainer. The rack fit the car perfectly, and with the videos and clear instructions that came with the kit, I got it installed on the car with only one misstep. The instructions came the the measurements in centimeters and inches. I didn't have a metric tape measure, and ended up messing up converting fractions to decimal.
My Daughter is going to college 500 miles away and is moving into an unfurnished apartment and needed to pick up some small furniture that wouldn't fit in her Malibu. She purchased several items from Facebook Marketplace and was able to transport a twin bed and mattress, a medium sized desk and some dining room chairs (in several trips) with no problems.
The only thing I can think of to improve the installation would be to have the Inches measurements in decimal or to include an inexpensive metric tape.

Comments
Still rock solid after a year. Very happy with the Rack. My daughter has used it from time to time over the past year when something wont fit in her car, and shes had no problems with it at all.

  • What Allen Wrench/Hex Wrench Fits the M6 x 20mm Screw on the Rhino-Rack # RRRLKVA?
I can definitely provide some clarification on what size hex wrench/allen wrench you need for the M6 x 20mm security screw on the Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs # RRRLKVA. According to my metric size specs, you do need a hex key of 5mm for the screw. It is possible that your allen wrench or the screw itself is stripped. One way to try to solve this is by trying both sides of the 5mm wrench for the screw. If you discover that there is a possibility that the screw is stripped, the only way...

  • Can Kvh Satellite Dish Antenna be Mounted to Crossbars or Roof of 2014 Ford Taurus
According to the installation instructions for the Kvh Satellite Dish that I reviewed online you will require a crossbar spread of 35-1/2" to mount the antenna to a roof rack. However, the roof rack systems available for the 2014 Ford Taurus max out at a crossbar spread of 28 inches, so the dish will not be compatible with your vehicle's short roof.
