pioneer in use on trail

Built for off-road use and tested in harsh Australian conditions, the Rhino-Rack Pioneer platform is a comprehensive solution for your cargo carrying needs. This platform's large, flat surface lets you carry more gear than a typical roof rack, freeing up space inside your vehicle. The Pioneer uses integrated channels in the planks, side rails, and frame to accommodate a wide variety of Rhino-Rack accessories, including awnings, light brackets, and more. The platform mounts directly to your vehicle's naked roof using custom ditch mounts and Quick Mount roof rack legs.

The Perfect Roof Rack for Any Outdoor Lifestyle

pioneer with accessories

Whether you are overlanding, camping, or tailgating, the Pioneer platform's ample surface space lets you carry a large amount of cargo and gear. This helps free up space inside of your vehicle so you and your passengers can travel comfortably. The integrated channels located in the planks, side rails, and frame let you install channel-mount accessories, like an awning or kayak carrier, similar to a traditional roof rack. But, there are also several accessories that install exclusively to the Pioneer platform, such as the aluminum folding ladder and gas can holders. And because of the platform's design you can utilize many of these accessories at the same time.

Accessory bars (RR43138B - sold separately) can be added to accommodate clamp-mounted accessories that fit in the space between the platform's planks, such as bike carriers and cargo boxes. And because the bars have C-channels, you can use them to mount additional channel-mounted gear in the open space between the planks. By installing the accessory bars in the platform's integrated channels, you gain all the advantages of a traditional crossbar system, while maintaining the generous surface space of the platform.

Utilitarian Design with Rugged, Off-Road Look

The Pioneer platform was designed with utility in mind and features a rugged, off-road look. The low-profile tray was also designed to be aerodynamic to help reduce wind noise and drag.

Strong, Durable Construction

Strong, yet lightweight, the platform's frame is constructed of aluminum and includes reinforced nylon connectors. Since these materials are powder coated and non-corrosive, the platform won't rust or fade when exposed to the weather. Rhino-Rack has rigorously tested the Pioneer in the harsh Australian outback, ensuring it's built to withstand anything your adventures throw at it.

Custom Fit Installation

This Pioneer platform rack is custom fit for your vehicle and includes all the parts necessary to install it on your naked roof. The platform comes unassembled, so you will have to put it together before proceeding to the installation. After this is complete, use a rivet gun to install ditch brackets to your vehicle's roof. These brackets create permanent fixed mounting points where you can bolt Quick Mount legs. The bars attached to the bottom of the platform connect to the legs and secure the Pioneer in place.

Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Rack Review - 2011 Ford F-450 Super Duty

Hi, everyone's Evangeline right here at etrailer. And today we'll be taking a look at this pretty cool setup which involves the Pioneer Platform, which is 60 inches by 54 inches. The quick mount legs and the ditch brackets. So we're gonna take a look at all of those right here on our 2011 Ford F-450. So you have a Ford F-450, you've got a big truck and your ready for some big adventures. So the reason this is on the roof of our Ford F-450 is because here's the situation.

We've got a person who's traveling across the country. He is hauling a fifth wheel in his truck bed. So he lost that truck bed space for all extra cargo. He also has some people camping out with him, going on adventures with him. So now he has to clear up some space inside the cab.

So now where does he put all of his stuff On the roof. So that's what the Pioneer Platform is for. It creates this big open space which has all that versatility for those different types of cargo, whether you wanna carry a kayak or luggage or lumber, it's really up to you. That's what the platform is for. So let's take some vehicle specific measurements.

We have these 60 inch by 54 inch wide platform and notice right where it stops. So you can see how our roof clearance is gonna be about two and a half inches from the top of our roof ridges to the bottom of the platform. Also, it stops right before the end of the cab which is helpful if you have a ladder rack because then you aren't hitting the platform. Or if you are carrying around a fifth wheel you wanna make sure you don't have any overhang that could possibly catch on, this doesn't. Here in the front, you've noticed how it does cover your sunroof.

So it ends right before the end of the sunroof. If you look inside, you'll definitely be able to see that there is a platform rack above you. The good thing though is look at where our lights are in front of it. So we positioned it where it doesn't go past the end of the cab and it doesn't go in front of your lights. So that way everyone can still see them. So the cargo capacity of the platform rack depends on the vehicle. And you have specific recommendations from Rhino Rack when it comes to different vehicles. So the vehicle load limit for this is gonna be about 220 pounds, but remember you still have to decrease the actual system weight and then that's gonna be your cargo capacity. And if you're taking this off road, that decreases even more. So keep that in mind when you're loading this up. So before installing your brackets, you first need make sure that you have all of the right tools. So this is everything that I use. What's actually included in your kit is gonna be your five millimeter rivets, your butyl tape, your bracket that goes on top and then this skirt for if you're gonna be using a weather strip or if you have a weather stripping on top of your truck. In our case though, since we don't, we're just gonna set this aside, since it is optional. Now the tools that I brought to the table in order of being used is gonna be your measuring tape. Please make sure you use the same measuring tape for this entire process. Once you've measured it out, double check those spots, go ahead and mark them. I use this as well to mark for where I'm gonna put the drill. And then speaking of drill, I use a five millimeter drill bit. Remember five millimeters, not 3/16. This is very important. Especially once you have those holes drilled out, you're gonna be using a rivet gun. Make sure you have the correct tips to match your rivets. Once everything's installed, this is gonna be an extra sealant. Just an extra precaution, since we don't have weathers stripping on our truck. So once you've determined or check that you have all the tools you need for this job, let's get started. The most important part here is to make sure your measurements are correct. So Rhino Rack actually has a fit guide for specific vehicles. So go ahead and look for that and use that so you can figure out where you need to mark your spots. So you're gonna have three holes that will match up the bracket. And then go ahead and once you double check your measurements and make sure they're not wrong, you gonna go ahead and mark those holes with a pen. So I just mark it over the bracket that way I know it's all lined up and I use painters tape here just as an extra precaution. Next, to make sure that my drill doesn't skip, I'm just gonna make a little hole punch here, right where I marked it. There we go. Do that couple times. Now that we have our holes punched, we're then gonna make a pilot hole. And of course, please be careful when you do this, you don't wanna go through your headliner. Fortunately, the truck we're working on has pretty good clearance so I'm not that worried about it. Just be careful. After you make your pilot hole, you may have to like build towards the five millimeter drill bit. So go ahead and switch those out if needed. Keep double checking with your brackets to make sure that all your holes line up and I'll get back to you once you finish all 12. So that our clear coat is drive and we're gonna go onto the next step, which is to set up the butyl tape. These are squares with holes already in them. So that's nice. You're just gonna put them over your holes and try to get them centered. Then place your bracket over those holes and push them down onto the tape, just to get them secured and then drop your rivet into the hole. So if you did this right, it should fit right through. The final step is to get your rivet gun. And. There you go. Since we don't have that weather stripping, we put that sealant on there just to make sure everything is covered. And this is when you would install the rest of your towers. So that's it for the install process of your ditch brackets. Depending on the height gear brackets, and depending on your vehicle, it may be a little bit different but just make sure you have the correct tools and you should be good to go. Once you have your ditch brackets installed, in other cases, sometimes usable track system. You just need anything that can connect to your mount. So we're going use a split washer, a flat washer and then we're gonna have our little bolt and drop that through. Now, tighten those down with these special included tool from your Rhino Rack system. So then you're gonna set up the towers and have them on your tray or your craft bars, if that's what you're doing, in our case since we have a tray, we have some pieces here. So I have the bolt and then I have a split washer. And then I have a flat washer right over there. Those are gonna fit through the bottom of your tower, have that sticking up and then put the t-slot on top and just very loosely thread it on there. This tower is gonna fit into the opening in the center of your crossbeams and then just slide it through, do that for all four towers. So now to put the platform onto the roof, I have some help here, so they're gonna lift the platform up and then we have some people to align the towers. So here we have the platform with the towers already on them. Just gently place them onto the roof as we get those brackets into place. My side's good. My side's good. I'm good. All right, there we go. Once your towers are lined up with your brackets, just pull those red levers and that secures it and then use the included tool or in my case, I'm using a ratchet version and that's just gonna tighten down that bolt. You can also access it from the front of the tower. You're gonna measure the overhang on each side and make sure that you have the equal amount of length. That's how you know that your platform is centered over your towers. You're gonna get four of these covers those fit right into the tower. So just pop that in and to secure it turn this over to left and do that for all four. Once you've double checked that everything is secure, if you we're using sealant, of course you would have to wait for that to dry. You've locked up all of your towers then that's it for the install process. You can now load it up with all the cargo you want for your adventures. So my personal thoughts about our Pioneer Platform on our Ford F-450 is I like how it is a perfect fit in on top of our roof. The struggle though was installing it into the gutters especially since the version we have does not have the weather stripping. So that's definitely something to keep in mind and plan ahead for. Now this does add a good amount of space when it comes to cargo but not that much more than a crossbar system would. So if your focus is weight distribution, if you're carrying items that require a lot of extra space behind your platform would probably be a good option for you. If you're just carrying, let's say roof box, roof basket or just a kayak, then maybe crossbar systems would be easier for you to install and are not as permanent. Hopefully this video helped you out with that decision making process though that way you can get the best fit for you, your adventures and your Ford F-450. And that was a look right here at our Pioneer Platform rack which is 60 inches by 54 inches wide with our quick mount legs and our ditch mounted brackets right here on our 2011 Ford F-450. My name's Evangeline. And I hope you enjoy the journey..

We bought the Pioneer Platform to go ontop of our Ford Excursion. I called to make sure that this was the model that came with the mounts that fit in the factory luggage rack rails. etrailer was super helpful over the phone. They had really good customer service. We put the Smittybilt Overlander XL rooftop tent on the platform. It all works great. I'd highly recommend etrailer to anyone everyone.

I called etrailer to verify fitment on my 2013 Ford E-350 XL. Everything arrived sooner than quoted, and instructions were clear. It took me approximately 6 hours to assemble by myself. I had 3 buddies over to put it on the van because it is ~100lbs and 100”x62”. We put towels on top of the van and slowly slid the fully assembled rack on top of the van. It took a while to level everything (30 mins?), but overall went on well and looks great.

The instructions didn’t clarify where the C-channel bars are supposed to be spaced to, but I used basic math skills and spaced each C-channel evenly spaced. It feels very strong. I believe it was 33mm on center for each C-Channel.

Looking forward to camping in a few weeks!

Very nice rack. It holds well and not too noisy when on the highway. I did drill a couple holes in the rack to hold my roof top tent down. Also like how many accessories are available for the Pioneer Platform Rack.

Purchased this about a month ago after having a mediocre cargo basket that started to rust after 2 weeks. This platform is not only more convenient and adaptable but it looks [really] great! Took some time to assemble but I made that every piece fit and lined up correctly. Nice finish and strongly constructed. I should have gotten this first! I also got the matching rail system to complete the set-up. Highly recommended. Shout out the the staff at etrailer for again for the great communication from start to finish!

1 year review. I’m still loving this Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform Rack. I haven’t had any problems since I installed it. My biggest worry was it rusting here in Hawaii as I’m close to the beach and live in a area where I get a lot salt air that reeks havoc on anything metal. I still get a lot of compliments especially from other Rhino Rack owners. No regrets!

Very nice platform that fit my needs. Costs a bit more than some others, but once it is put together it is very solid. I like the eco-system of tie-downs, mounts, etc. that you can get for it. Those accessories are what really makes it worth it. The flexibility of the channels makes mounting everything easy and quick. This rack doesn't come with the specific mounts for any vehicle, so make sure you look for whatever you need to attach it to your rack as well. Assembly took longer than I expected (about 3-4 hours, including mounting to my vehicle), with over 100 bolts to assemble. Comes with a nice torque wrench that helps a lot. Instructions were good overall, but pay attention to the screws for the corners, as they are mislabeled. Also, measuring guidelines painted on the side rails are nice, but they are not perfectly aligned on the left and right side. I found it easier to use a tape measure and pencil to make sure the cross supports were straight. While I didn't use them yet, this rack also has internal wiring channels enclosed in the perimeter frame that I could see being very useful.

Fantastic rack, easily modified to accommodate tents/cargo/whatever. It's not quiet though, so do yourself a favor and get the faring.

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

I bought this roof rack to mount on my 2018 Toyota TRD Off Road 4Runner. The reason I purchased it was because of the versatility that this product offers. There are many roof racks out there for my vehicle. Some are cheap and some are expensive. Some racks are smaller and some are full size. I was looking for a rack that wouldn't break the bank as well as cover a majority of the roof (without drilling). I have two young kids and I'd like to get them out more. Hence, buying the 4Runner as well as the rack. This rack will enable me to load a ton of stuff on it in the future such a roof top tent, awning, etc. Even though I'm somewhat handy, the installation did take around 3-4 hours. I did have one other person helping me. I highly recommend having an additional set of hands helping during the installation. The sides rail installation was easier than I thought it would be. The platform itself took longer to install. Overall: very happy with this product. I highly recommend it.

I love this roof rack! Since I purchased it, I also purchased the eye bolts for the rack and have used them numerous times over the past year. I have been able to move many different things on top of the rack. At this point, Im looking at possible getting the side guards in the near future.

The RINO RACK AND PIONEER PLATFORM are a great addition to my little Wrangler.
etrailer folks were very helpful in determining exactly what I wanted and needed. The assembly instructions are very good - even though there are a lot of parts to assemble. I was able to complete the assembly by myself (with help getting the top off the jeep.) If I can offer a recommendation from my experience, I would pre-assemble the entire unit with the mounting brackets finger-tightened to the platform AND THEN set it on the roof - to insure that the holes needed to be drilled are in exactly the right spot. I had to re-drill two holes and maybe that was my own fault, but until I did, i could not get the platform to rest in the mounting brackets.
All that said, I am VERY PLEASED with the RINO RACK product. It is very secure, easily accessible, very low profile (3" from roof to top of rack), large platform that still allows removal of the Freedom Top on my rig. It will give me the extra carrying capacity as we tow the jeep behind the motor home from Arizona to Alaska and hit lots of back country for tent camping in the process!!

Comments
Iwe continue to enjoy and appreciate the platform- AND i have addedthe rails, which have really helped with securing a load!!

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

I ordered the Rhino Rack Platform Rack with Backbone System for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to enable it to mount a rooftop tent. The rack is expensive at about $1600 all in, but I have no question about this rack’s capabilities and it looks awesome. I prepped myself by watching several different videos, including etrailer’s installation video. Everything went fairly well, but I encountered a couple of minor issues.
First, when I bolted the platform extrusions to the end rails from the bottom of the rack, I didn’t pay attention to the topside of the extrusions. After completing this and turning the rack right side up, I found that each screw had forced the ends of each extrusion up slightly so that they were not flush to the end rails. I am debating whether to leave this as is or to remove each screw and add another washer to relieve the pressure it is causing.
Second, although I carefully placed the rear and middle brackets in position and was careful with the drilling template for the front bracket, there was still some misalignment that couldn’t be overcome by the small ovals where the legs connect to the platform. I had to expand these ovals by drilling them wider. Eventually I got a good fit.
Finally, the quick mount legs required two different keys to remove the platform. This was caused by the quick mount legs coming in the form of two separate kits. One kit contained two legs and one key (no spare) and the other kit had four legs and two keys. The key numbers from these two sets were different. I contacted etrailer, but they had no control over the key set packaging and referred me to Rhino Rack. Rhino Rack was very responsive and sent me new cylinders and keys so that I had locks that were all keyed the same, as well as having a total of four matching keys.
We haven’t used the rack yet, but I love the styling and enhancement it gives my Jeep. Just check out my picture...

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

I purchased this for my 2017 Nissan Armada I'm very happy with the quality definitely worth the price tag. Only one thing that might need looking into I had a factory roof rack the middle support on stock rack only has one bolt the backbone rail has 2 mounting holes so I had to take roof trim off and and use a Dremel to cut out larger holes on each side to get the second mounting hole for the middle just a little modification not sure if this is just a 2017 issue but happy with the outcome I have all measurements written down as well if anyone would like it makes it easier to set up mounting platform because if you get it wrong you will need that second person to help bring it back down and reposition mounting points. I bought this because if u have a Armada you know the trunk space is very limited another reason I like this product is it's low profile and I'm able to park in the garage still and that's a must. Hope this helps with making a large purchase I will provide pictures

This item fits the 2017 Nissan Armada with no existing rails or crossbars. If you had a stock rack then you would need item # RR86AB

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

I installed this on a '99 Lexus LX470 (Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series). I have had 0 issues with this rack and the options are seemingly endless.
Here is what I've had mounted to this rack:
1- Black Oak LED 40" light bar using Rhino Rack brackets
2- Max Trax recovery treads
3- Jerry Can
4- Mountain bike - had to spend 100 on correct rail/fork mount, but it works flawlessly
5- Oz Tent Foxwing awning - used Rhino Rack Foxwing brackets
6- Shovel / Hi-lift jack dual brackets - only had shovel mounted
7- Tepui Roof Top Tent - Kukenam Ruggedized - used Eezi Awn K9 brackets and made it super easy to mount.

My ONLY complaint is that for a rack this expensive (all racks are expensive) I wish they would rivet a metal "RHINO RACK" logo to the product. The decals start peeling after a short time and makes a really great quality rack look cheap.

I will also add this note: Add-ons and all the extras get really expensive. It's like stepping into vacuum for your money. Once you get over the initial investment, you've only just begun. Now, you've got to mount things to it and that's where you really have to PLAN IT OUT AHEAD OF TIME. You need to have a game plan of what you want to do with it, otherwise you will have a boat load of bolts/brackets/clamps etc. that you end up not using. There are usually more than one way of getting something attached. So, ask yourself if you really need that 100.00 bracket or if a ratchet strap will do the same thing. Also, don't get overcome by the "coolness" factor. Do you REALLY need that Hi-lift jack, or do you just want to keep up with all the Jeepsters out there. If you take that approach, you'll be ahead of the game.

I deducted one star for the decals and for all the accessories being so overly expensive....but they DO WORK REALLY WELL.

This is not a mark on Etrailer. Etrailer is AAA+ Their customer service is top notch and have always provided me with great communication and service.

Bought the Rhino Rack 60 x 54 platform to mount over the bed of my '20 Jeep Gladiator. Then I will mount a Thule Cargo Box onto platform for additional storage of camping gear.

I decided to go Rhino Rack because it really gives you options. I like the antenna mount options for my CB and Ham radio.

Top quality materials and finish. Much nicer than I had anticipated.

Package came well packed and in good order. But be advised it's pretty heavy.

Assembly will look quite daunting at first. I would advise finding an elevated surface that is larger than the platform you purchase. One easy way is to empty your garage and get two 3 x 6 folding tables or 2 sawhorses and a piece of plywood. Put down a light colored cloth or blanket on work surface as not to scratch your platform.

Make sure you received the size you ordered prior to opening box.

Unpack box and find hardware box. I had a small clear plastic fishing lure organizer in which I put all hardware in. Trust me, there's a lot of hardware. You may then count all hardware against packing list if you wish.

Set that hardware aside. Preview instructions as they are fairly clear. Then just lay out all the pieces upside down in the order they go together making sure all parts are accounted for. Then follow the instructions and you should be good to go.

Have no hesitations in buying from etrailer. There customer service is fantastic and returns are super easy.

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

I have been looking a long time for a good roof rack for my 2018 Toyota 4Runner and decided on the Rhino Pioneer Platform with the Backbone mounting system.
Removal of the factory side rails was very easy. Putting the platform together was relatively easy and installing the Backbone mounting system in the existing factory holes was also quiet easy. Attaching the platform to the Backbone mounting system was a bit more challenging for me. I tend to take my time and double check everything as I go. Total build and installation time was approximately 6 hours. The end result is fantastic, it looks great, is very solid, will easily accommodate my needs (Rooftop Tent, lumber trips to Home Depot, Kayak, Mountain Bike, etc.). I have taken a couple of trips on the highway 80MPH and the wind noise is noticeable but acceptable. I will probably purchase the wind deflector and hope this will also positively impact the gas mileage.
The people at etrailer are exceptional to deal with! Their pricing is good, their communication is excellent, shipping was fast, the packaging was perfect with all parts well protected and nothing missing. If you have any questions about the product or installation, they are knowledgeable and happy to help.
The rack is solid, good looking, and well made. At this point my only concern is the high price for various accessories. I highly recommend this roof rack system and dealing with etrailer is a pleasure.

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

Rhino rack pioneer platform JA8200 for Land Cruiser 80 Series. Awesome product, aluminum high build quality, low profile and round edge design that matches well with 80 Series's curvy line. I decided on this rack for #1 functional reason, "fitting into my garage" after my rig's been lift and upsized tires. #2 reason is aesthetics fitting the LC80. ARB was too high on profile, other one piece design was too bulky for shipping. Great product. The only minor issue I had was the 80 Series has a bit curvature (~1/4") on rain gutter, with highest point at the middle area. This requires a bit adjusting/playing with foot positioning and use of shimming. eTrailer customer service was great, with Bryan sent me the missing part once notified. Excellent build and fit for the 2019 RAM Power Wagon WITH a sunroof. I would highly recommend using additional RTV to seal the holes. It barely clears the Sat antenna and the sunroof. The satellite radio cuts off easier because of the rack being on top of it. Instructions are clear enough for a DIY-type person to get this done properly.
The rack, just like any roof rack does introduce more wind noise at high speed.

Good quality product that seems to be made well. Not too bad to put together, make sure you have an extra hand putting this on the topper. Use an extra washer when putting on each slat, the bolts are too long and will push through on the front side.

Loving my new Ford Bronco Sport Badlands model and the Pioneer Platform rack! With the Bronco Sport being so new, locating quality accessories was a bit of a challenge. I was excited to see Rhino Rack had the Pioneer Platform rack system I was looking for to start my build! Vicki at etrailer was super helpful in finding the parts, as listed on the Rhino Rack website, to make up the system. The etrailer site had not been updated to include the compatibility with the Pioneer System yet for the Bronco Sport. The parts were actually in stock and ready to ship! I’m giving the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform 5 stars for ease of assembly and product quality. Assembly and install took about 3 hours, with several fore/aft adjustment to allow for complete operation and clearance for the Bronco Sports moonroof. This rack is the foundation for the complete “overland” conversion to come!

Very happy with this purchase. I chose it for the size, light weight yet sturdy construction, and low profile. Initial assembly was straightforward and installing and removing it from my roof cross rails is pretty quick and easy. Have used it for a week-long family beach trip. There was a bit of wind noise on the highway, but nothing objectionable. The customer service was friendly and responsive in answering pre-purchase questions and processing my order.

Review from a similar Pioneer in Roof Rack

There are so many options for the 4Runner. Going through all the research, choosing one, and being happy with it in the long run are overwhelming to someone like me that just has to be able to see all the angles. We did have a few requirements. It needed to be low profile enough to fit in the garage, it needed to be able to hold a RTT, and not break the bank.

In the end, it came down to 3 options.
Gobi
Rhino Rack
Front Runner

I ruled out the Front Runner option because I wasn’t comfortable with drilling holes in the roof. Not that it can’t be done and done well. I just wasn’t comfortable doing it myself, nor did I have a local shop that I trusted to install the nutserts.

Gobi was next to get eliminated. I love the look and the name speaks for itself with regard to quality. However, the long lead-times and high price tag were turn off’s.

Short story long - We chose the #RhinoRack #pioneerplatform. First impressions - It looks great. It is lighter than the ARB we had before. Wind noise isn’t terrible at 70mph+. The textured powder coat seems tough enough. I like the full length. The #4Runner with 3inch lift still fits in the garage without drama. AND it was delivered to my door 3 days after ordering thanks to #etrailer

The only negative feedback I can give are the directions. There were a couple head-scratcher moments.

Well I must say I am impressed--with the Rhino Rack and etrailer! This big ole Pioneer platform package arrived really quickly and was in perfect shape in and out--none of this already opened noise you hear about from sketchy vendors. The platform quality is also really good; I didn't expect it to be so good. I also really like how low it sits; they were obviously designing this to fit the Outback just right. I am a happy camper! Thanks etrailer for making this process worry/pain-free.

The rack is outstanding! It's extremely well built and sturdy, and fit my Excursion perfectly. I highly recommend it. etrailer.com shipped it quickly and showed me where it was every step of the journey, and I was able to be at my house when it arrived (in two large boxes). 100% satisfied with both etrailer and the roof rack.
