Mounting Diagram

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier Dimensions

Cargo boxes, bags, and baskets are great for transporting gear on your vehicle's roof. A cargo box has the added benefits of an aerodynamic shape that reduces drag and wind noise, a hard shell to protect your gear, and a higher degree of weather resistance. And you can latch and lock a cargo box for added protection against theft.

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier 4 Person Family Camping

This Trunx cargo box has 9 cu ft of space for sports equipment, camping gear, or luggage for up to 4 people. The aerodynamic shape helps to reduce wind noise and drag. The box opens from the side so you can load and unload it from the passenger's side of your vehicle. U-bolt mounting clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and can be installed in minutes without tools. And the durable yet lightweight HDPE thermoplastic construction prevents warping, denting, or cracking.

Side-Opening Lid

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier Side Opening Lid

The box features a side-opening lid so you can load and unload your gear from the passenger's side of your vehicle.

Metal Strut

The box features 2 metal struts that support the lid while loading and unloading. Each strut raises independently from the base and latches in place on the lid.

Built-In Locks

Trunx Medium Cargo Carrier Rear Lock

The box includes 2 integrated locks on the passenger's side of the box. These locks secure your gear inside the box, and they also help secure the box to your crossbars by denying access to the mounting hardware.

Safety Latches

Trunx Medium Cargo Carrier Open Side LatchClosed Side Latch

The latches on the front, rear, and passenger's side of the box help ensure that the box is completely closed before you get underway. The latches must be open to load the box.

Security Pins

Three metal pins secure the latches in place. These pins can be swapped out with padlocks (not included) to provide additional security.

Tool-Free Installation

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier U-Bolt Mounting Hardware

The box installs quickly with U-bolts and hand knobs. Just slip the U-bolts over your crossbars and thread them through the pre-drilled holes in the bottom of the box.

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier Hand Knobs and Pre-Drilled Holes

Once the U-bolts are in place, set the metal plates over the ends and tighten the hand knobs to secure the box. The box mounts to crossbars with a 22" spread without modification. Crossbars on some vehicles are not adjustable so you make need to drill additional holes in the bottom of the carrier for the right fit.

Trunx Medium Cargo Carrier Reinforced Area

You can increase the maximum crossbar spread to up to 30" by drilling additional 5/16" holes in the floor of the box. These additional mounting holes should be drilled adjacent to the reinforced area of the box floor.

Rugged Construction

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier Durable Construction

The Trunx cargo box is constructed of a high-molecular-weight and high-density polyethylene thermoplastic. This heavy-duty material resists scuffs, scratches, and cracks better than ABS plastic. It also holds up to prolonged sun exposure and inclement weather.

Convenient Storage

Trunx Roof Cargo Carrier Easy Storage

When the box is not in use, simply remove the lid and place it top down inside the base. This makes it easy to store while taking minimal space.

Used this on a cross-county road-trip and it worked great! We drove through all kinds of winter weather--snow, rain, ice, high wind-- and the contents seemed unscathed. The installation was relatively easy--bolted onto my Thule square bars on top of my Prius. The box felt very secure and did not move around or shake at all. I've used longer cargo boxes on top of my Prius and could see them shaking in the wind, so the shorter length was much appreciated. We did get lower gas mileage than normal and felt some wind drag from the high profile of the box, but that was expected. I would not want to take this box on and off frequently because the bolt process is kind of slow. Great customer service from etrailer and fast shipping. Great experience overall!

Thank you for your review. If the u-bolt mount is inconvenient you may consider the Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Rooftop Cargo Box part Y07191 which has a quick built in mounting system. It is more expensive but it is much more convenient to attach to the roof rack.

I bought this car top carrier a year ago. I needed extra storage for our pilgrimage to Florida. Yes, we are snowbirds and proud of it. It is approx. 2700 miles round trip. I’m happy to report the carrier worked flawlessly and provided the extra capacity we were looking for. I would highly recommend this carrier for build quality and a great price. We look forward to heading south again this December and with this carrier we have one less problem to worry about. Note, we added tie down straps for extra security. Not sure this is necessary, but it gave us a little more peace of mind.

Great size for my Jeep Liberty. Easy install even having to drill new holes for the mounting brackets. Looking forward to putting it to use in a couple of weeks.

I installed the Trunx on a Toyota FJ Cruiser. It was an easy install and holds a lot. Attaching the lid was a little tricky, but perseverance paid off. It may be easier with two people. With the lid up, it seems flimsy, but when latched and locked, it is solid. Drove full at highway speeds with no problem. Surprisingly quiet. One issue with the arm that props the lid open. One side has the hole drilled a bit too small and requires a lot of force to attach. I will try to file it larger as both arms are needed when lid is up. Still very satisfied.

I bought this product not knowing much about roof cargo carrier's. I was looking around and doing research when I bumped onto the etrailer website. I decided to browse then finally call etrailer. I had the pleasure of getting Geoffrey as my sales rep. He helped me get my roof rack and this item the roof cargo carrier for my 2014 Honda Accord . I was concerned because I was short on time and I needed it for a road trip to celebrate my daughters birthday in another state. Well after Geoffrey helped me understand what I was buying he also assured me that my items would be delivered very quickly and he was right. I received my items less then a week after I ordered them. I mounted them on my car took me about half an hour to assemble and install on my vehicle. I then went on my road trip and this product was hardly felt while I was driving. If I didn't know that I mounted it I would never had known it was there. No noise, no driving drag. Worked perfectly. There are others a lot more expensive but this 1 is the 1 I needed and I was not disappointed. Thank you Geoffrey and etrailer for all your help will be looking to purchase other things in the near future. You guys made my trip a success.

A reasonable carrier for minimal usages. You get what you pay for. The latching system is not handy as you have to make sure it is not only latched on all 6 points, but all 6 points also absolutely have to be pinned/locked. We suffered a side wind gust that blew the carrier open, threw our belongings across the highway and pushed the car 2 lanes over instantly. Not a manufacturer fault, they designed this carrier to be less expensive and it is. Less expensive comes at a cost. We upgraded to an equivalent dive Thule this year and are passing the carrier down to the kids WITH PLENTY OF FOREWARNING!

- TRX44FR
by:

Just the size needed and quite true to stated measurements. Since the car does not have room for a spare tire, I plan to use this to carry one on extended trips. Had to give a lower rating since the rear lock plate is mounted slightly lower than the front and would not engage until bent up. The rear lock is also loose in the mount and the back edge is caved in so the lift pin tries to go on the outside instead of inside of the bottom. Have forced alignment and placed in the sun to see if the heat will correct the pin alignment problem. Will try to tighten lock assembly later.

by:

You get what you pay for and for the money it's not bad. Plenty of room and easy to install. The mounting hardware is wimpy but seems to be doing it's job. I imagine I will upgrade the hardware at some point. The shell it's self is kinda flimsy but when it's all closed up and latched down it stiffens up. Doesn't seem to move at all traveling at highway speeds and I haven't noticed any new wind noise. If you're going to tour the country living out of your car for 4 yrs this is not the cargo box for you. Using it here and there for family vacations seems to be more of what this cargo box can handle. It's not a direct bolt on application for a Subaru Outback but it's not hard to make it work either. I would also recommend getting some lynch pins for the lid clamps instead of the little spring clips that the cargo box comes with.

Very hard to attach to roof rack. Must have one hand in the carrier and one hand under the carrier to screw on each of the four brackets. Material is light plastic.

We purchased this product in order to take our daughter to college. Having a small SUV with limited space, we decided to look for carriers. After looking at carriers online, I was starting to become discouraged at the high prices. Then, I stumbled upon etrailer.com that had exactly what I was looking for. They were also selling this model for half the price of others I was looking at on other sites. Anything that I was able to find at a comparable price were made out of materials that would have shredded going down the highway. For less than $300, we will have plenty of room to take our daughter's items to school and the comfort of knowing that this will hold up during the 4000 mile round trip. It seems to be sturdy enough for years of use.

- TRX44FR
by:

Let start from the beginning. The process of search, order and make the decision on the site is extremely easy. The purchasing process was easy and I had the order shipped the same day of the order. The order arrived in 3 days since I made the order, I am still surprised how fast arrived. The assembly process was easy and the instructions covered everything. The only problem I found was that my Subaru rack can't be adjusted. Therefore, I made some little modification to the holes location. Once I did, the roof cargo assembly was completed. To test the modification and the roof cargo performance I drove 300 miles. The car managed perfectly, there was no vibration, sound or anything that ruin a smooth drive. The final rating: Site and Purchase 5+ Delivery 5+ Assembly 5 Overall Performance 5+ I am a happy customer.

This roof top carrier for the price is a great value. I installed this on a 2012 Subaru Outback in about 40 minutes as I had to drill new mounting holes for the rear rack bar. The rack bars on the Outback are not ajustable. Other than that you would not need any tools if your bars are adjustable and would only take 20 minutes to install. From what I see this will work great for our family.

- TRX44FR
by:

For the the cost this is the best hard case I have found. It’s a little flimsy but for the money it is absolutely worth it. Pretty simple to install and lightweight to put up by yourself. In future I will probably upgrade to a more robust unit. But for now this is great storage container for the money.

Product came well packed, very easy to put together! 5 min. Just the right size for Mini Cooper countryman. Great price. ready for a trip. I will add a lock to the front. Also great to have serval keys for the side locks.

This product has been great for my needs. The hatch arms are a bit flimsy, but otherwise it is still going strong. No leeks through the winter. Handled the snow. Very secure atop my Honda Fit. It has been up there for a year and I hope it will last for another.

Great company. Shipped order quickly and kept me informed. Very professional. Trunx 9 is a good product for the money. Mine was shipped with a faulty Threaded Knob. I was able to come up with a temporary fix, but I would like a replacement knob. Aside from that, I feel it will serve our needs quite well.

- TRX44FR
by:

So far so good.... shipping was very prompt and the install wasn't bad. I had to drill new holes in the rear for mounting but no big deal. The plastic is a little lighter gauge than I expected however I'm satisfied with the product. I haven't driven the vehicle with it installed yet but we'll be heading to Yellowstone next week so it'll get plenty of test miles. I'll update the review after using product.

by:

My husband gets upset because the top won't stay up when he is loading and unloading. Otherwise the extra space is very handy

- TRX44FR
by:

Good deal for the money. A little tricky mating the upper and lower pieces, but after that, no problems. Bolted onto my 2010 Escape (which has an etrailer hitch - no problems) easily, and has taken a couple of 6 hour turnpike runs with no issues. Another good deal from etrailer.

- TRX44FR
by:

So far so good. Not bad to assemble and install. Getting lid on was the only real challenge. Assemble on vehicle not bad. Seems secure and did not notice any road noise on test drive. Was able to get a lot stored in box - about amount I thought. Lid seems flimsy when open but knew that from other reviews. When lid is shut it seems very stable. Key locks work ok. Overall, for the price and for someone who will use a carrier a few times a year I think it will work fine. Possible improvements: Make lid slot attachment easier. Make a turn knob clamp on inside box to attach to rails for super easy install/removal and charge $20 to $30 more.

I thought the service was great. In A pinch I needed a last minute gift. I ordered a roof rack a few days before Christmas snd it came in time. I will definitely shop at etrailer again

We recently purchased the Black 18 Cubic Foot Car Top Cargo Rooftop Cargo Box (Item #CTC-18S) when transporting our daughter and her belongings to college. The carrier is relatively light weight; yet very durable and does not generate elevated noise or vibration when driving at high speeds. It allowed us to store lighter; but bulky items such as linens, blankets and seasonal clothes while freeing up space within our SUV for occupants and heavier items. This was the first time I had used a rooftop carrier and visions of retrieving lost items along the interstate ran through my mind for the first 200 or so miles. Despite some heavy downpours and high winds, we completed the 900 mile journey without incident. Upon arrival, everything within the carrier was fully intact and completely dry. I would highly recommend this product…. it is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and have found it to be a good solution for meeting our travelling needs.

- TRX44FR
by:

Has a lot of space, and keeps cargo dry, unlike soft roof bags. Also much more aerodynamicA little difficult to hook up the top clamshell to the front and put in the safety hook. One person has to hold it up while the other person reaches in to put in the clip. Also wish the two clamshells would nest better when disassembled; would make it easier to store in the carage. But overall very satisfied. Mounted on a Toyota Corolla provides enough storage room up top to that the interior of the car is open for long trips, where you need to stop and drop the seat back to sleep for a few hours. All the heavy things (tire cables, food, water, boots, cameras, took kits, etc). go down in the floorboard and trunk to keep the center of gravity low, and all the lightweight things (sleeping bags, clothes, air mattresses, blankets, extra coats, etc.) go up in the roof cargo box.

  • Will Trunx Cargo Carrier 9 Cu Ft Fit Onto Roof Rack With 31" Crossbar Spread?
I have an excellent cargo carrier for you, but unfortunately the Trunx Rooftop Cargo Carrier - 9 cu ft # TRX44FR can only be used on crossbar spreads of up to 30" max. I confirmed with Trunx that it is not be a good idea to try to extend this box out to 31" as 30" is already the max that you can safely go. I would look into the SportRack Horizon Rooftop Cargo Box - 11 cu ft # SR7011 which fits crossbar spread of up to 35". This is a larger box than the Trunx; it measures 88-1/2" long, 21"...

This is because, in order to use the Horizon, you need to have at least 52-1/2 inches of length between your front crossbar and the line where your roof and hatch meet (see attached photo). Unfortunately, you do...

  • Which Roof Rack And Rooftop Cargo Box Allows Functionality Of Panoramic Roof On 2020 Ford Escape?
It really comes down to which roof rack you install onto the flush rails on your 2020 Ford Escape since that will determine how high off the roof the Inno Ridge Rooftop Cargo Box - 8 cu ft - Gloss Black # INBRA220R-BK will sit. The most affordable option for a roof rack is the Thule SquareBar Evo Crossbars. I talked to my contact at Thule and confirmed that these crossbars will sit high enough to allow full functionality of your panoramic roof. The complete roof rack system that you...

  • Roof Rack for 2016 Honda HR-V Compatibility with Car Top Cargo Roof Box
For your 2016 Honda HR-V with the flush mounted side rails, the Rhino Rack roof rack is no longer a confirmed fit from the manufacturer. For a confirmed fit I recommend the Inno Aero roof rack consisting of # INXB130-2, # INXS450, # INTR159. This roof rack is compatible with theTrunx Rooftop Cargo Carrier - 9 cu ft - Black # TRX44FR when you space your crossbars 22 inches on center. This combination will work well for you.

  • Options For Replacing Yakima Load Ranger 17 Cargo Box
I checked directly with Yakima for you, and the struts for the Yakima Load Ranger 17 cargo box have been discontinued for some time, and there isn't any replacement we know is compatible with this cargo box. The best option we can offer is a replacement cargo box, which I know isn't the news you were wanting to hear but is the best alternative if your cargo box is no longer something you can use. Yakima is a great brand and you can replace the Load Ranger 17 with another Yakima box with...

  • Will the Thule Force XL Rooftop Cargo Box Interfere with the GPS Reception?
If your new 2021 Toyota Sienna Limited has the rear fin for the GPS or radio reception, the 82-3/4 inch long Thule Force XT XL Rooftop Cargo Box # TH6358B will most likely cover the fin. Depending on what you have stored inside the cargo box, there may be some interference, but there should not be a complete blocking of the signal for your radio/GPS. The plastic box itself should not obstruct the satellite signal you receive from the antenna. If you want a shorter box, I recommend the...

  • Option For Possible Replacement Lock For X-Cargo 18 Rooftop Cargo Box
Replacement locks are not available for a Sears X-Cargo 18 cargo box, though there is one option that may be able to work, which is the Replacement Lock Core and Key for SportRack Explorer Cargo Box # SR03807. Some people have gotten these to work on X-Cargo boxes though it will likely require modification and I can't guarantee a fit; you'll want to compare this lock to yours to see if it looks similar. I know it's not what you were looking for, but I did want to at least throw out...

  • 2016 Smart FourTwo Hitch?
I have some alternative ideas for you. Unfortunately the Smart FourTwo muffler runs right behind the rear bumper so no one is going to be able to design a hitch that works around that. If you only wish to carry a few bikes then you could use the SeaSucker # 298-SX6000B roof cross bars with the Yakima # Y02114 Wheel mount bike racks. If you wanted to carry extra cargo you can use the Trunx # TRX44FR roof top cargo box with the same SeaSucker cross bars. The really neat thing about the...
