Cargo boxes, bags, and baskets are great for transporting gear on your vehicle's roof. A cargo box has the added benefits of an aerodynamic shape that reduces drag and wind noise, a hard shell to protect your gear, and a higher degree of weather resistance. And you can latch and lock a cargo box for added protection against theft.

Aerodynamic Cargo Box with Gloss Black Finish

Profile18B case

With 18 cu ft of space, the Malone Profile18B has enough room for sports equipment, camping gear, or luggage for 3 to 4 people. The aerodynamic design helps reduce wind noise and drag. The locking lid opens from the passenger or driver side, and it's designed to provide clearance when you open your rear hatch. Quick-attach clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and spreads so you can install the box in minutes without tools. And the durable yet lightweight ABS plastic construction helps to prevent warping, denting, or cracking.

Sturdy, Dual-Side-Opening Lid

duel side open

The Profile18B lid opens from both sides for easy access to your cargo. This means your gear is always close at hand whether you mount the box closer to the driver or passenger side. The extra-stiff lid helps reduce road noise and vibration, and it guards against dents and scratches. Built-in gas strut hinges make it easier to open and close the lid, and also help to keep the lid open while loading and unloading.

Built-In Lock

lock key

The box includes a built-in lock on both sides to secure your gear. The locks also deter theft of the box itself because it denies access to the mounting hardware. The key can only be removed once it is in the locked position, ensuring the box is securely locked and safe for transportation. 3 locking points on both sides keep the lid secure when locked.

Universal Clamp-On Mounting Hardware

Profile18B Mounting Clamps

The Profile18B installs with inward-facing quick-attach mounting clamps. These clamps fit most crossbar styles, and they are inserted into the slots along the floor of the box to accommodate different crossbar spreads. To adjust a clamp, loosen the knobs and move the clamp to the desired location. Then tighten the knobs down to close the clamp around your crossbar.

Video Transcript for Malone Profile18 Rooftop Cargo Box Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Malone Profile 18B Rooftop Cargo Box with 18 cubic feet of space, part number MPG911. This is black in color, and this also applies to the Malone Profile 18S Silver Cargo Box, part number MPG910. The Malone Profile Cargo Box boasts up to 18 cubic feet of space for storage, and this can be anything from your skis or snowboards, but also for luggage, sporting goods equipment, or anything you want to keep from out, from inside your vehicle, to keep it from getting dirty. The Malone Profile does come with two sets of keys for either side, and this can be opened from either side as opposed to the Malone Cargo 12, which is only passenger-side. So once you install this, you can put it more towards the passenger or driver side as needed, and there's still enough space on the other side, you can put in another accessory such as a bike rack.So insert the key, and once you turn it into the unlocked position, the key cannot be removed, so you don't have to worry about losing it once you're ready to close it up and lock it up. Now we can open it up, and you can see how easy it is to open and close it here.

A lot of that's because of the gas struts that assist it with opening and closing, once you do this. With the box open, you can see all that space on the inside here. This can accommodate for up to three to four skiers or snowboarders, and again, you can see there's plenty of space also for your luggage or whatever else you might be hauling as well. This does come with two load straps to secure everything down, and you'll notice there's also a loop on the other side as well. Now you can place this on either side as you like, but you can also purchase more heavier-duty straps from Malone which are sold separately and can be found on box does have a carrying capacity of 165 pounds, and a lot of that's due to the reinforced bottom that you see here to be able to withstand those weights, but again, always double-check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can withstand that kind of weight on it.

This box does fit on a wide variety of styles of roof rack systems as well. We have it attached to our arrow bars right now, but this will also fit square, round, elliptical, and most factory roof racks. They do attach at a different manner where you have the hook or clamp coming towards the center of both sides. As with most roof boxes, they tend to face the same way, and they kind of slide into position. With this one, you just have to work at it a little bit more, but it does install pretty easily.

It also has a nice aerodynamic shape to it, so while you drive, it's not gonna create a lot of wind noise and drag that you get with other boxes. This also has superior adjustability. The clamps can go back and forth as well and be adjusted to at least ensure it's possible that we can open up our rear hatch without making contact to our box. The top portion of the box does have a coating on it to make UV-resistant, meaning it's not gonna fade over time, and it's gonna keep this nice shiny exterior. The external dimensions of the box are gonna be 78 3/4 of an inch long by 32 3/8 of an inch wide, by 15 and 3/4 inches tall at its tallest point.

When comparing this with other products, one that comes up is gonna be the Thule Force XL rooftop cargo box that's gonna be part number TH625. The biggest difference between these two boxes first is gonna be the space that you have, the Thule being 17 cubic feet and the Malone being 18 cubic feet. However, the Thule Force is longer than the Malone, so it can fit skis that are slightly longer than the ones you can fit in the Malone. Also, as far as ease of install is concerned, that's gonna go to the Thule as well. While the Malone has the two clamps that go toward the inside and can make loading a little awkward, the Thule's both face the same way, and those can be slid directly into place, making the insulation a lot less hassle for you. And one final note, a few of the customer questions that we've gotten about this particular roof box. One asked if we could actually put two boxes side by side on the roof, and in some cases, that may work, but in most cases, not. You have to measure out how much space you have on your roof rack to work with to determine if that's possible. And another one is: can you utilize your sun roof with this installed And to that, the answer is no because it's going to be blocked by the clamps, possibly underneath, so we do not recommend you use that. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the cargo box, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have it sitting on our table here, and we'll be lifting it onto our roof rack system shortly, but first, we're gonna open it up and start installing the feet. Now we have three of our legs already installed, and together like this, we'll undo the top knob here to loosen that up. Take off our flat washer and our top bracket here, and then this will go underneath going into the hole here in this slot, and you want to make sure it's facing this way. On the back side, they're gonna be facing the opposite way, and we'll get to that when we actually install this on our vehicle. So we'll go ahead and lift this up, line up the hole like so. Next we'll take our bracket, set that on top of the screw like so, then our washer, finally our cap here, and again, we're just gonna loosely install this as we did on the others as well, 'cause now we're ready to set this up on onto our roof. The instructions do recommend you use two people, but if you can lift it yourself, that's alright.Once inaudible 00:05:31, wanna figure out which side you're gonna be loading it from. Since we're gonna be loading it form the passenger side, we're gonna make it more towards that side so it's easier for us to get to the lock and open it up when we need to, and one of the main reasons for leaving these loose is once we put them in place, we can simply take our legs here and push them into place on both sides, and then start tightening them up. Also once you're in this initial adjustment phase, you also wanna make sure that if you do have a hatch, that it's not gonna interfere with your box as well. See, it's not gonna be a problem here. Another case is you may have to adjust your roof rack system if it's on factory 00:06:05 side rails to go slightly forward. Now we're gonna start tightening things down. We'll take our tool here from the holder in the back, and we'll come to our knobs here and tighten those down. First by hand, and then with our tool, and you can see how it's gripping around on the bottom. These two portions line up with the top like that, just simply tighten it down. It's nice and snug 'round the roof rack, and we'll repeat this process for our other feet. Next we'll take our straps and put them through the loop points when we tightened down our clamps to our roof rack system. So we just guide them through. Now we can start loading up our gear, setting it in place, and then we'll come to the end of our tie-downs here, and start detaching those. Tighten it down so it's nice and secure. Now we're ready to close up our box, lock it up, and hit the road. And there you have it for the Malone Profile 18B Rooftop Cargo Box, part number MPG911.

Reviewing this after 18 months or so because in that time I have NEVER seen another one of these on the road, despite living in the roof box capital of the world (Denver) and I think it looks better than the majority of boxes I see, save the newer Thules. The price has gone up since I purchased, but I still think it's good value. Great roof box option at a fraction of the price of Thule/Yakima, plus it looks sleek and the shiny finish looks great. I frequently use this for cargo storage / skis and snowboards across 3 different vehicles and bars (Jeep Renegade on Yakima Aerobars, VW Golf on OEM square bars, Subaru Forester on OEM bars) and it's great. Easy to take on and off and always feels secure. I've fit ski's up to 190cm in it carefully at an angle - my buddy's 196cm skis wouldn't fit without bending. I will say that, as with probably any other roof box, you need to be careful of the locks fully engaging and not being blocked. I've had issues getting the box re-opened once locked if something inside is pushed up against one of the 3 lock points. 608450
