Video Transcript for Yakima ForkChop Roof Bike Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima ForkChop Roof Bike Rack, part number: Y02117. The Yakima ForkChop is a great fork-mounted bike rack that can fit a wide variety of bikes, and also fit on a wide variety of roof racks and cargo baskets. And what's most unique about this bike rack is that it's two separate pieces, and not one long tray. Therefore, if you wanted to put this in a cargo basket, if the cargo basket's loaded up, you're not gonna have any hindrances in between. And the same thing with roof systems that have their sunroofs, it's not gonna hinder that, as well. Right now we have a fork-mount bike, which is connected by the included lockable 9mm skewer, but this will also fit 12 and 15mm thru-axles, as well as fat bike tires with tire sizes up to 5" wide.

And while the lock cores are not included, you can purchase them separately so you can make all your roof rack accessories, as well as your roof rack itself, all keyed alike. The bike rack itself is gonna have no frame contact whatsoever, with of course, the front having the skewer mount, as well as this rear wheel strap here. And with everything attached as it is, this will not interfere with most vehicles between your hatch and the bike. This rack is very easy to install. It simply clamps on the front as you can see here, and if you come to the front, there are different settings you can have this at to fit a wide variety of roof rack styles. Right now we have it on aero bars, but these will also work with elliptical, round, square, and most factory bars.

Now, with our rear mount, it simply clamps around the rear bar. The rear wheel cradle does swivel, and this is what's gonna enable you to use a wide variety of sizes of bikes on this. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the ForkChop, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have everything laid out that comes in the kit. We have the multiple sets here, which you can change out for your thru-axles. We have the round bar adapters, and then we have our two pieces that will go on a roof rack.

To start off, we'll open up the top portion on our fork or skewer mount, then we'll loosen it up by loosening up this turn knob at the rear. Turning it upside down, you can see how that T portion is pushing out. Turn it. That'll enable us to open up our jaw. Coming up to the front, we can actually pop this loose, and you're gonna see that there's three settings depending on which type of roof rack system that you have.

Since we have the core bars, we'll be using the second setting to attach it to our front. All right, we'll set it in place on our roof rack system, pushing it through to the right. We can start to tighten it down. That's nice and tight. We'll close that up.Now we'll move on to our rear mount. With the rear mount it's a little more simple. All you have to do is loosen up this knob here, enough to get it around our bar, and then we'll start to tighten it up, lining it up as best as we can with our front mount. Next we can install our strap. We'll push the tab in and pull it through into place. The first bike style we're gonna show you how to mount on here is gonna be the fork-style. So we're gonna take our skewer mount here, loosen it up all the way, then we'll place it through our mount here, and just loosely tighten it up on the other side. Making sure that it's in the open position as we tighten this back up. All right. Now we can grab our bike and set it in place. Start tightening it down, figuring out the best spot for it. There we go. Then we'll come back to the rear and strap down our rear tire. Now that we've shown you how to install a regular fork-mount bike, let's go ahead and show you how it works with a thru-axle. Right now, the adapter at the end here is gonna be a 9mm quick-release; that's the default. So double check the size of your thru-axle, and with one we have today we will have to change this out. So unscrew both sides, find the appropriate size, and insert the adapter. Once you have the size you need, install that on both sides. Put the cover back on, and now we can install our thru-axle. Take our bike, setting it first on the back, line up the front thru-axle, put that in place, and we'll start to tighten it down. Thru-axle's installed, then we'll strap down our rear tire. Now we're ready to hit the road and show it on our test course. Here it is on our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is gonna show us the side-to-side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next we're at the alternating speed bumps, which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. And finally, we have the full speed bumps where we'll see the up and down action, which is just like driving out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway. And there you have it for the Yakima ForkChop Roof Bike Rack, part number: Y02117.

Very happy with the customer service and selection at etrailer.com. I received my Yakima Chop Head during our trip thru New Mexico and it is the perfect companion to my Thule roof rack. Our bikes can ride secure on the roof of the truck as we pull our 5th wheel thru-out the southwest. Thanks George for your attentiveness and follow-up. Not many in customer service check with the customer after the fact. Continued success and Happy Trails !! 547831

Do you have a question about this Roof Bike Rack?

  • Adding Two Bikes to a 2010 Subaru Forester with a Roof Basket and Hitch Mounted Bike Rack
  • The Yakima ForkChop, part # Y02117, does work with a roof cargo basket because it clamps around the bars in the bottom of the basket. I wish I had a picture or video of this but unfortunately we don't right now. Depending on your Rola basket this may be a great option for you. The ForkChop requires a crossbar spread of 32 to 50 inches. Another option is to replace the Rola basket altogether with the Kuat Vagabond X, part # VX201. It's a roof basket that includes two built-in fork...

  • Compatibility of the Yakima ForkChop Bike Rack on a 2015 Audi A5 OEM roof Rack
  • The Yakima ForkChop Roof Bike Rack, # Y02117, can mount on most factory crossbars that measure with a spread of 32-50 inches. To find out the correct crossbar spread of your 2015 Audi A5 measure from the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar. If this measurement is between the 32-50 inch range, then the ForkChop rack will work on your vehicle. However, if your crossbar spread is less than 30 inches, then I have a recommendation for this application. The Yakima...

  • How to Carry Bikes on a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric
