pivoting wheel traytire mounted on tray

The Boa includes a short, pivoting wheel tray, enabling the rack to carry a wide range of bike sizes without a full length tray. Not having the tray also makes the Boa great for use on the Yakima LoadWarrior and MegaWarrior cargo baskets. You can haul your bike and still easily access your gear in the basket.

fork block and skewerfork mounted on block

The Boa features a Same Key System (SKS)-lockable skewer for keeping your bike and rack securely atop your vehicle. The skewer features a hard plastic quick-release lever for fast loading and unloading of your bike to the fork block, and an SKS Core (sold separately) allows you to lock your bike to the rack. Because the installation hardware is hidden behind the hard plastic cover on the fork block and you can only remove the cover by removing the skewer, the fork block is locked to the crossbars as well.

For additional security, the wheel tray can be locked to your crossbars by replacing the hand knob (hex key) on the bottom of the mounting bracket with a Yakima Accessory Lock Housing (Y07220), which requires purchase of an additional SKS Core.

Video Transcript for Yakima Roof Bike Racks - Fork Mount - Y02065 Review

Today we are going to cover part number Y02065 from Yakima. This is their Boa bicycle rack. This product will mount onto your existing crossbars on your roof rack of your vehicle. This will fit either the round or square bars. It is pretty simple to use. We will go through some of the features and show you how it works.

All right, we have got the pieces laid out in two halves. This is the front half. This is the part where the fork of your bicycle will get attached to here. This is where the rear wheel will get attached to this cradle here. We will cover some of the features here, starting off with the mounts that go on the crossbars. These are designed to go on round or square bars. And next we will talk about the skewer, here. It is pretty easy to use. This goes through and threads on, and when you tighten it down into place, it actually has a little provision for a lock right here that you can add to it to work with Yakimas Same Key System. No tools are needed, since the Allen key is supplied with the kit. All right, we will cover some of the features of the back wheel. This is the cradle itself it is all plastic. It is nice and lightweight but very strong. The strap that holds the wheel down is extra-thick, so the back wheel definitely will not go anywhere. No tools are needed to attach to the rear crossbar. It is adjustable on this mount right here to sit level like this or at an angle, as you need it to. All right, now let us go ahead and install this on a set of typical load bars and give you a better idea of how it looks.

Basically, the screws will go from the top down and then the bottom plate will go underneath of it. And then you simply run the bolts down. Just snug them up first. Before you snug it down tight, take a second to move it back and forth into position where you want it. Then you want to have this tilted down a little bit so where the skewer goes is right above the crossbar. Once you have it set up the way you want it, then just go ahead and tighten them down. Just go ahead and snap on your cover and then install the skewer. All right, and now you can move on to the rear crossbar. The second part has this snap-on piece that just goes over the bar. You can bolt on the rear wheel carrier.

And there are a couple of options with this, depending on your rack and depending on how long the bike is and the configuration of your rack. You can actually mount this in two different positions at an angle like this or you can mount it straight up and down like that. Once you decide which way you want it, then you can go ahead and install the bolts from the inside out and it through the clamp here. And then install your handle nut. And, depending on the length of your bike, you may have it flat like this or you can have it tilted down at an angle, too. And again, it is just preference on the bike itself. But to leave it snug, when you put the bike on there it will conform to what it needs to. Okay, at this point we will go ahead and line up the carriers and put on a bike.

What you want to do is tighten up the skewer. Some bikes will have a little bit of interference so sometimes you have to start with the handle on the other side. So, if that is the case, you want to take the skewer off and just flip it over and reinstall it. And on the back area here, you can see how it conformed to what it needed to on the bicycle wheel. Then go ahead and snug that down. Then install your strap that goes over the top and clamps into place. All right, and that is all it takes. All right, and there you have it for part number Y02065 from Yakima, the Boa.

Very good bike rack. I have a "short" Thule square bar rack. And the Yakima Y02065 fits perfectly. The rear wheel attachment is adjustable making the fitment very secure. I really like it! 456776

- Y02065

They upgraded the skewer from the one shown in the video. It is much beefier and no longer has a screw on end cap that can be unscrewed. If you have at least a 32inch spread on your crossbars this is just as good as a fork mount with a tray. It wont work on bars closer together. Works great and is very sturdy with a small footprint. 37965

Works great. I am using it to carry our tandem on a boat/bike trailer. Had to fiddle with it a little to get everything perfect. It holds tight and is easy to use I also have attached tie-downs that I already had just to provide added security; however that is probably not necessary. 697817

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Roof Bike Racks

Do you have a question about this Roof Bike Rack?

  • Bike Rack Needed to Transport a Recumbent Trike
  • I do have a few options for you to carry a recumbent trike on your SUV. The first option would be to use the SeaSucker Roof Bike Rack for Trikes # 298-BD1005. You will simply need to place the Vacuum Cups in the appropriate places on your roof and pump them up until the orange band disappears. This has a 45 lbs weight capacity. Another option would be to use the Yakima Boa Roof Mounted Bike Carrier # Y02065 on your roof rack. For this to be compatible with your trike you will also...

  • Bike Carriers for Recumbent Bike and Recumbent Trike Carried on Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer
  • The total weight capacity of the Yakima 66-Inch Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08106 is 250-lbs and this is enough for the combined weight of your various bikes and carriers. The I.C.E. VTX recumbent trike has a base weight of 29-lbs and up, depending on options. The Bacchetta Strada weighs 28-lbs without pedals. The Burley Tail Wagon pet trailer weighs 23-1/2-lbs. So in all, the three "vehicles" weigh about 80-lbs total, well within the trailer capacity. For the Strada I suggest the Yakima...

  • Is a Roof Mounted Bike Rack Compatible with My Thule Canyon Cargo Basket?
  • I reached out to my contact at Thule and they said that they don't have a product designed to fit the Canyon Cargo Basket # TH859XT, however they also said that as long as you didn't alter the basket in any way you won't void any warranty by adding one. They also can't be liable for any malfunction based on you adding something to the cargo basket. I cannot make a recommendation for you based on that information, but if you choose to still add a bike rack, you may want something like...

  • There are a couple options you can consider to carry your Catrike on your 2008 Cayenne with the factory tracks on the roof. The first thing you will need is a roof rack. The roof rack I recommend is the Yakima Roof Rack. When installed this roof rack has a 48-inch crossbar. To order this roof rack you will need part # Y00408, part # Y00148, part # Y03536, and part # Y00221. You can then use the Yakima Boa wheel cradles and attach then directly to the crossbars of the roof rack....

The use of a light weight trailer like the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer, # Y08106, to carry a kayak and a bike might be an option for you. • Will the Yakima BOA fit the crossbar of 2005 Subaru Forester
  • According to our friends at Yakima, the Boa Roof Mounted Bike Carrier you referenced, part # Y02065 will not fit on the factory crossbars on your Forester, as they are too large in diameter. Your best bet would be to go with a rack that fits your OE crossbars. If you like the fork-mount type rack, Yakima recommends their ForkLift, part # Y02098. The Yakima FrontLoader # Y02103 is a good choice if you do not care to remove the front wheel to transport your bike.
