Rightline Gear Sport on SUV

The Rightline Gear Sport 3 cargo bag holds your gear securely on the roof of your vehicle. It can be mounted on the roof rack, cargo basket, or bare roof of most large SUVs, minivans, or crossovers. This premium, aerodynamic cargo bag is perfect for any camping trip, shopping spree, or family vacation.

PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

Closeup of Sport 3 cargo bag material and inner PVC layer

The bag is made of PVC semi-coated polyester mesh XT. The material is treated with WeatherGuard waterproofing and blocks 98 percent of UV rays to help prevent fading. The PVC material is also strengthened with a nylon grid that helps prevent rips and tears. This waterproof fabric stays flexible in hot or cold temperatures so it can be folded for compact storage

Watertight, Double-Sealed Seams

Closeup of Sport 3 cargo bag seam and material

The bag has double-sealed seams to protect your cargo from the elements. The seams are sewn to reinforce the connections and then fused together to create a watertight seal that blocks out rain and snow.

Waterproof Zipper

Diagram of zip right zipper placement on cargo bag

The SZIP zipper is welded onto the surface of the bag and concealed under a layer of waterproof rubber. This gives the zipper more shelter from rain than ordinary under-the-flap zippers.

Loaded Pack Right Sport 3 cargo bag unzipped and on top of vehicle

The zipper also runs three-quarters of the way around the roof bag, so you can easily load up the bag or access your gear.

Versatile Mounting Options

Rightline Gear Sport 3 cargo bag tied down to roof rack side rails on top of vehicle

The Sport 3 cargo bag can be attached to a roof rack, factory raised side rails, or a cargo basket with the integrated straps. Simply wrap each strap around a solid anchor point, thread the strap first through the end loop and then through the buckle, and pull it tight.

Rightline Gear Sport 3 clips

To mount the bag on a naked roof, attach the 4 included car clips to the straps and hook them over the door frame weather molding. The hooks have 5/8" openings to fit over the door ledges. Your vehicle's doors should close easily over the hooks to secure them in place.

A roof pad (sold separately) is available to keep the bag from sliding around and to protect the top of your vehicle from scratches.

Locking Options

Zipper in the flap of Pack Right Sport cargo bag

To lock up the bag, run a Rightline Gear locking cable (sold separately) through the cutouts in the zipper pulls. Then, if you want to lock the bag to your roof, run the cable around your roof rack rails.

Video Transcript for Rightline Gear Sport Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number RL100S30, and this install process will also apply to the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag, as well as the Sport 1 and the Sport Jr. The Rightline Gear Sport 3 Cargo Bag is ready for carrying a wide variety of accessories, anything from sporting goods to camping gear from here to the site or your luggage across country. The best of this bag is, it can work with or without roof rack systems or in cargo baskets. This is made from a waterproof PVC material, and that coupled with the flap for the zipper as well as the double-sealed seams here, that's going to help keep your gear clean and dry. The polyester material also resists cuts and tears, and also it has UV protection, so it's not going to fade. The zippers are going to be corrosion-resistant and have openings on the ends where you can insert a padlock to help secure your gear while you travel as well. We did mention the flap earlier. That also helps protect the zipper and help keep things watertight.

Also, to keep the flap in place, we do have hook-and-loop straps to secure it.It's also easy to load and unload, as it opens 3/4 of the way all the way around and loads from the rear. Also, in this particular case, it's not going to make contact with the rear hatch. You have 18 cubic feet of space to work with to load up your gear, and this measures 48" long by 40" wide by 19" tall. As far as carrying capacity is concerned, that's dependent on the vehicle you have. Just go to your vehicle's manual and figure out its specifications. Now, there have been some customer comments on this product.

One issue that was brought up was that this actually came loose while they we're driving, and when they tried to re-attach it, the plastic pieces we're broken. So, with that, just make sure you're strapping everything down nice and tight before you leave, and also you trying to make sure the seal's in place to make sure no rain or anything like that gets in while you drive as well.Another customer issue was that some of the fabric was torn, and it came loose again, and they felt that it was because it was moving from side to side. So, again, always make sure everything is tightened down properly, but also having the mat underneath helps keep that bag staying in place while you travel. When comparing this with other products, one that comes up is going to be the Thule Interstate Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number TH869. The biggest difference between these two, besides the general shape of the bags, is going to be how much space they have on the inside, with the Thule having 16 cubic feet and the Sport 3 having 18 cubic feet. The biggest advantage the Rightline Gear has is that it attaches to vehicles with or without roof rack systems, while the Thule Interstate requires a roof rack system. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the Rightline Sport 3, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.

We'll first take it out of its convenient carrying tote. We'll starting by folding it out. It looks like this is going to be the top side. You can tell, because the buckles are going to be on the top. Now, before we place it onto the roof of our vehicle, it is recommended that you just quickly wash it off with a little bit of soap and water so it's nice and clean, and you're not going to be dragging dirt back and forth across your roof. Before we actually install our bags, it's a good idea to use the Rightline Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad for the Rightline Rooftop Cargo Bags, part number RL100650.

This ensures that the bag won't move back and forth while you're driving. We'll take our non-skid pad, and we'll set it on the roof of our vehicle in the general spot where our bag's going to be. You want to make sure that the textured side is facing up. This here's the textured side, making sure it's facing up. This is the non-textured side. While this is not a necessity for the Rightline bags, it's definitely a help. Now, at this point, depending on the size of the bag that you're hauling, you can cut this pad to length to fit more properly around the bag itself. Before we set this onto our roof, we're going to unzip it completely all the way around. Now we can set our bag onto the roof. When you do this, you want to make sure the non-opening end goes towards the front, and open up the flag, and we can start loading our gear. Once we have everything installed, then we can start zipping it up on both sides, and they're going to meet up in the end here.As we zip these done, you want to make sure you connect, or at least reconnect, the hook and the fasteners all the way around to make sure that the flap stays in place. In this case, we're going to keep the zippers to the corner here so it's just a little easier to get to next time. At this point it's good if you have a padlock or something like that that can fit through the zipper holes, connect those two up, and secure them in place.Next we can install our straps. To do that, you want to make sure you use the proper buckle for each situation. If you we're to have a roof rack attached to your vehicle, you would use the front buckle. Since this one does not have a roof rack on it, we'll be using the side one here. We'll start by taking our strap and feeding it through the buckle, and then we'll go to the inside of the vehicle and install the hook. On the inside of the vehicle, we'll take our hook, and it goes on the inside panel like so. We'll do this on the other side as well. Then you can pull the strap tight, and then we simply just shut the door. Then we'll take any excess that we may have and just wrap it around just to make sure it's not flapping around while we drive, making an annoying sound and stuff like that. Just a simple knot will do. Now we have a place on our vehicle with factory raised side rails, where you don't need a hook to fasten it down. Instead, you would actually remove the hook and the strap completely. Then you have this loop on the end you'll wrap underneath, put our strap through, and then we'll strap it down that way. Get it nice and tight and then tie off the excess. When you're finished using the Rightline bag, it has this convenient tote that you can place in the rear of the vehicle so it's ready for next time. There you have it for the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number RL100S30.

It already has small holes in it which let water in. I thought the product would be more durable, especially since we only use it a couple of times a year. Disappointed. 406699

Purchased this cargo bag on the road and the good folks at etrailer shipped to my hotel with no problems. The product is the perfect match for the Smittybilt Defender roof rack for Jeeps - it fills the dimensions and is 16-18" high providing enough room for a lot of gear. The product write-up is correct - rubberized zipper, fold over top, etc. This is a quality product perfect for the Defender roof rack. Many thanks to Donna at etrailer for her help. 395072

I love my roof top carrier. The product was perfect and fit on top of my van. It held a lot. We had another 4 hours to get to our destination and it started raining. When we arrived at our hotel we unloaded and were very relieved that our belongings were dry. :) Having the storage bag it came in is also very nice. If we every need to buy another cargo bag we definitely will buy one from etrailer.com. I had some questions and called customer service and they were excellent. Took my order over the phone and the product shipped fast. 292719

No complaints. Had 11 hour road trip to gulf shores. Had heavy rain on way down, no leaks. Fits a lot of cargo. With no skid mat sits in place perfectly. Used without crossbars and had no issues running straps through car under doors 361468

Have used this Rightline Rooftop Cargo Bag once since I bought it, and was completely satisfied with the durability and size. We have a minivan with no rooftop rails and needed extra storage for our family roadtrip. It seemed to be water resistant and did not experience any water damage to our belongings inside. Dimensions are accurate and held one night of camping gear for our family of 5 (i.e. sleeping bags, pillows, cookware, hiking gear, shoes, etc.). There's no need to spend more money on the expensive brand name bags. This did the job and the soft bag (vs. a hard case) fit the odd shapes of camping items. We were concerned that the weight of the packed bag and wind resistance from driving would cause the straps to eventually give way, but not so. We drove approximately 400 miles on highways and rural roads, and the only complaint was the loud floppy noise from the bag in the wind. Otherwise, it functioned as I had hoped and am pleased with my purchase. 325323

I think the Cargo Bag and the way its constructed is excellent. The only thing I would suggest to the user is that you mark or label the straps, so they are used in the same position. That way you only need minor adjustment for side to side and front to back. All in all easy to use great product. 368955

I needed this product to carry four peoples' luggage during a roundtrip drive from Virginia to Florida over New Year. I fit very will in the back of my pickup and held more luggage than I had anticipated. The zippers were a bit stiff, especially in the bitter cold we experienced, but otherwise was great. The straps worked very easily with the tie down points in the bed of the truck but I really didn't need to use them because of the weight of the luggage. For the price and its utility, it was the best product I could imagine. It will certainly be used again in the future and it will be interesting to see how long it holds up. 112255

This luggage bag far exceeded our expectations. We have been traveling with it for about a year now (including a 3 month journey across the US and through Canada). It was more than enough to fit everything our family of 5 needed on top of our minivan, and has survived countless storms (both with rain and even hail at times), and has never once lost its waterproof quality. All items put inside stay completely dry! We plan on not only using this luggage bag for as long as we possibly can, but if for some reason it ever does need to be replaced, we will immediately get another one just like it! I would recommend this to anyone and everyone! One of the best investments I've ever made! 391296

Cargo bag is great!. Waterproof, durable with easy set up and take down (as advertised) PROVIDED TIE-DOWN STRAPS ARE HORRIBLE!!!! Drove from Houston, TX to Miami, FL. Stopped in Bonifay FL to rest for the night. During the 10 hour drive to Bonifay, I had to pull over at least 10 times to adjust and/or tighten the straps. They did not stay tight. Over time they would work themselves loose and start to slap the top of the vehicle. That night I was going to fold it up pack our luggage in the Tahoe and return the cargo bag as soon as I got back from our vacation. I was very happy with the cargo BAG so I decided to go to the local WalMart and purchase a few ratchet straps instead. Once I tied down the cargo bag with the new straps, instantly it felt more secure. I threw the provided straps in the trash. We didn't have any problems for the rest of the trip to Miami including the 18 hour drive home. Something needs to be done with the cheap plastic clips on the provided tie-down straps. They do not stay tight. Over time they work themselves loose and start to slap the top of the vehicle. I knew the load wasn't going to go anywhere so a few times I would just let it slap the top of the truck for miles because I was tired of dealing with it. I would definitely recommend this product, but If you are going to purchase this product I would suggest you use a couple ratchet straps, it will definitely make your trip a lot less stressful. 274414

We purchased this product for a family vacation from Michigan to Arkansas. Initially it seemed to be perfect for what we needed. The vehicle used did not have cross bars so we had to bring the straps through the car. We used the product exactly as instructed and put nothing but a 3 suitcases and 2 dufflebags into it. On our way home, we had a rainstorm while at one of our short stops. Because the straps pressed against the seals around the door, our vehicle seats, inside roof and floor were soaked. We proceeded to our overnight location. While unloading, we noticed that our items that were in the product were soaking wet, and had to find a laundromat to wash and dry our clothing. When we removed it from the rooftop, we found that due to the straps rubbing from the wind force, the product had tears in it. At this point, we had to figure out how to fit all of our items into the vehicle which made for a very uncomfortable ride for the remaining several hundred miles home. I would not recommend this product for anybody! 47878

I agree with Sheri. I bought this bag about a year ago to take to Gulf Shores, AL from Southern Indiana, we used it on top of my moms Ford Freestyle and it worked like a charm. About 6 months later I used it on top of my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee to take the same trip and it worked ok on the way down. The straps did rub holes in the bag from the wind, and I bought some duct tape to cover the holes so our luggage would not get wet. I purchased the mat to sit on top of the vehicle also. On the trip back I loaded the same way and we had nothing but trouble from the start. We stopped a couple of times because it kept trying to lift up and I tightened the straps 3 or 4 times and I could not even push the bag up off the vehicle. Once on the road again the straps and buckles broke and my bag went flying down the emergency lane on I-65. Luckily the bag held up enough that the luggage stayed in, even though it was all damaged to some extent. At that point the bag was shredded and I had to try and pack everything in our vehicle, which was a trick in itself. Needless to say Im not a fan. If you decide to go with this bag I would buy heavier duty straps, since apparently these only last for about 1 and 12 trips.

I highly advise not to purchase this product. We were 60 miles into our trip, and our bag flew off the roof. Thank God there was no one immediately behind us. We did try to strap it back on to the roof before we noticed the rings that the straps go through were plastic. They were all either cracked or gone. We also decided not to run the straps over the back because it had torn while sliding down the highway and the hole was tearing like paper. I do believe this would be a decent product if the rings were metal. After reading other reviews, I see that we are not the first one to lose their bag off the roof. I would definitely recommend the hitch mounted system as you will also save on fuel because of the wind resistance 257807

Worked beautifully. Had one on daughters Toyota RAV4 and one on the trunk of my Honda Accord and hauled her possessions back from Rexburg ID to Colonial Heights VA over 3 days and two flat tires. The product worked well. There was a learning curve to installing it. Unfortunately I did not have the carrier stuffed full. This caused some wind damage. Once I realized this was happening I used extra straps to cinch it down better. 322290

  • Roof Cargo Bag Recommendation for 2016 Honda Odyssey with Naked Roof
We have the Rightline cargo bags that can fit a naked roof as well as one with a roof rack installed. Just depends on what size works best for you. We have the part # RL100S30 which has 18 cubic feet and measures 48 x 80 x 19. Part # RL100S20 which is 15 cubic feet and measures 44 x 36 x 19. You would need to check the owners manual for your 2015 Forester or with Subaru to determine the roof capacity. I was able to determine that it is 150 lbs as that is listed on page 8-14 of your manual. The Rightline Cargo Bag part # RL100S30 is a very large bag that measures 48" x 40" x 19" which would carry up to 18 cubic feet of cargo. You would want to measure the dimensions of your roof to see if this would be a fit or not. I also recommend a protective pad, # RL100650, to protect...

I recommend the RightLine Gear Sport 3 XL, part # RL100S30, for your Town and Country. The RightLine Sport roof bags are designed to fit on naked roofs, roofs with raised side rails, or aftermarket and factory roof racks like yours. I also like RightLine products becuase of how waterproof their stuff is.

  • Will Rightline Sport 3 XL Waterproof Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S30 Fit on 2014 Honda CR-V
The Rightline Sport 3 XL Waterproof Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S30 is a excellent rooftop cargo solution as it combines high capacity, mounting flexibility, and water-proof construction at a cost-effective price. You can take a quick measurement of the width of the available space on your CR-V to estimate the fit of this soft cargo bag. Another great feature of soft bags like this Rightline is that their flexible construction allows them to conform to the size and shape of the available...

  • Will Rightline Cargo Bag 3 XL Fit 2017 Chevy Traverse with Crossbar Roof Rack
The Rightline Gear Sport 3 XL Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S30 can easily attach to the crossbars you have on the roof of your 2017 Chevy Traverse that run from left to right. Crossbars are actually preferred when attaching a bag like this to the roof of your vehicle.

  • Recommended Roof Cargo Bag For 2014 Toyota Sienna With No Roof Rack Or Side Rails
I recommend using a cargo bag like part # RL100S30 which uses straps that go through the van interior and buckle to hold the cargo bag in place. This cargo bag has 18 cu ft of space and measures 48 x 40 x 19 inches, and is waterproof. As far as burglar proof, the zipper pulls on the cargo bag have slots that a small lock like part # 1547DCM can work in. To help protect the van roof finish I also recommend the non-skid pad, part # RL100650. Unfortunately, none of our suppliers have...

  • Roof Mounted Cargo Bag for 2007 Honda CR-V with Roof Rack and Crossbars
Ideally, you would want to choose a cargo bag that will fit in between the crossbars on your CR-V and sit flat on the vehicle roof. However, since all of the cargo bags we offer in the 12-15 cubic foot capacity would be too long to fit in between, you can have the bag sit behind the front crossbar and overlap the rear, if you wish. With a soft sided bag your best option would be to have the bag sit on a cargo basket like part # C18115. The basket would provide a flat and stable mounting...

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2005 Acura MDX
I'd be happy to help, but I do need to know the year of your Acura MDX and whether or not you already have a roof rack, trailer hitch or any other accessories. If you can get back to me with this information I'd be happy to give you the best options.

For an excellent roof cargo bag with 18 cubic feet of storage space the Rightline Cargo Bag part # RL100S30 would be an excellent option that can attach to virtually any roof style. • What is the Best Rooftop Cargo Bag for a 2012 Mazda CX-9
The Rightline Sport 3 XL Rooftop carrier # RL100S30 will accommodate your 2012 Mazda CX-9 very nicely. A good option to consider is the Non-skid Roof Protection Pad # RL100650 which will protect your roof from scratches and dings inflicted by sharp objects in your carrier. Plus will keep bag from sliding around on your roof as you brake and accelerate. You can use extra straps if you would like for extra reinforcement for the cargo bag. I have included video and instruction...

  • Availability of Cargo Carrier For 2003 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
I would not have any roof cargo carriers or roof cargo bags that would be able to mount to the convertible roof of your 2003 Volkswagen Beetle. The convertible roof is not designed to carry any amount of weight. I would recommend to use a hitch and a hitch cargo carrier to carry any extra cargo on your Beetle. The hitch would be the Draw-Tite Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 24679. This hitch has a 200-lb tongue weight capacity. You will want to check your owners manual or with...

  • Best Way To Carry Cargo on a 2016 Honda Odyssey
I would love to help but none of the roof bags for a bare roof will work with a sliding rear door. Therefore, the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag part # RL100S30 will not fit your 2016 Honda Odyssey unless you first install a roof rack like the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbar System which consists of part # RRVA126B-2, part # RRQMVA10, part # RRRTV168, and part # RRRLT600. The next best option which is also more cost effective would be to install a trailer hitch like the etrailer.com...

  • Roof Mount Cargo Bag for a 2004 Ford Explorer with Factory Side Rails
Rightline cargo bag # RL100S30 is the largest roof mount cargo bag that we carry that can be used on a vehicle that does not have crossbars like your 2004 Ford Explorer. This bag boasts 18 cubic feet of storage space. Take a look at the video link provided showing this bag. To protect the roof and help keep the bag in place while driving I recommend pad # RL100650. Also you will want to consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Ford for the roof weight carrying capacity prior to loading.

  • Is a Roof Pad Recommended for a Roof Mounted Cargo Bag on a Toyota Sequoia
If you are interested in a roof mounted cargo bag, I would always recommend a roof pad like the Rightline Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad, # RL100650. If the bag will be sitting on the roof, sliding will be a potential issue. You can also limit sliding by securing the bag to the rails and the crossbars, but I would still recommend using the non-skit pad. The main advantage to using a hitch mounted cargo carrier over a roof mounted cargo carrier is the weight capacity. A hitch mounted cargo...

  • How Many Suitcases Will Fit in the Rightline Sport 3 Roof Cargo Bag on a 2013 Honda Pilot
The Rightline Sport 3 # RL100S30 that you referenced measures 48L x 40W x 19T inches which I have noted in the attached picture. The only way to accurately figure out how many suitcases it will hold would be to know the sizes of the suitcases. I can estimate it could hold maybe 4 suitcases if you consider airline carry on suitcases as medium, however my idea of a medium suitcase is about double that size in which case it should hold 2 or 3. This carrier will hold up to 18 cubic feet of...
