Rightline Gear Sport 2 on SUV

The Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag holds your gear securely on the roof of your vehicle. It can be mounted on the roof rack, cargo basket, or bare roof of most small SUVs, minivans, or crossovers. This premium, aerodynamic cargo bag is perfect for any camping trip, shopping spree, or family vacation.

PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

Closeup of Sport 1 cargo bag material and inner PVC layer

The bag is made of PVC semi-coated polyester mesh XT. The material is treated with WeatherGuard waterproofing and blocks 98 percent of UV rays to help prevent fading. The PVC material is also strengthened with a nylon grid that helps prevent rips and tears. This waterproof fabric stays flexible in hot or cold temperatures so it can be folded for compact storage.

Watertight, Double-Sealed Seams

Closeup of Sport 2 cargo bag seam and material

The bag has double-sealed seams to protect your cargo from the elements. The seams are sewn to reinforce the connections and then fused together to create a watertight seal that blocks out rain and snow.

Waterproof Zipper

Diagram of zip right zipper placement on cargo bag

The SZIP zipper is welded onto the surface of the bag and concealed under a layer of waterproof rubber. This gives the zipper more shelter from rain than ordinary under-the-flap zippers.

Loaded PackRight Sport 1 cargo bag unzipped and on top of vehicle

The zipper also runs three-quarters of the way around the roof bag, so you can easily load up the bag or access your gear.

Versatile Mounting Options

Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag tied down to roof rack side rails on top of vehicle

The Rightline Gear Sport 2 cargo bag can be attached to a roof rack, factory raised side rails, or a cargo basket with the integrated straps. Simply wrap each strap around a solid anchor point, thread the strap first through the end loop and then through the buckle, and pull it tight.

Rightline Gear Sport 2 clips

To mount the bag on a naked roof, attach the 4 included car clips to the straps and hook them over the door frame weather molding. The hooks have 5/8" openings to fit over the door ledges. Your vehicle's doors should close easily over the hooks to secure them in place.

A roof pad (sold separately) is available to keep the bag from sliding around and to protect the top of your vehicle from scratches.

Locking Options

Zipper in the flap of Sport 2 cargo bag

To lock up the bag, run a Rightline Gear locking cable (sold separately) through the cutouts in the zipper pulls. Then, if you want to lock the bag to your roof, run the cable around your roof rack rails.

Video Transcript for Rightline Gear Sport Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number RL100S30, and this install process will also apply to the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag, as well as the Sport 1 and the Sport Jr. The Rightline Gear Sport 3 Cargo Bag is ready for carrying a wide variety of accessories, anything from sporting goods to camping gear from here to the site or your luggage across country. The best of this bag is, it can work with or without roof rack systems or in cargo baskets. This is made from a waterproof PVC material, and that coupled with the flap for the zipper as well as the double-sealed seams here, that's going to help keep your gear clean and dry. The polyester material also resists cuts and tears, and also it has UV protection, so it's not going to fade. The zippers are going to be corrosion-resistant and have openings on the ends where you can insert a padlock to help secure your gear while you travel as well. We did mention the flap earlier. That also helps protect the zipper and help keep things watertight.

Also, to keep the flap in place, we do have hook-and-loop straps to secure it.It's also easy to load and unload, as it opens 3/4 of the way all the way around and loads from the rear. Also, in this particular case, it's not going to make contact with the rear hatch. You have 18 cubic feet of space to work with to load up your gear, and this measures 48" long by 40" wide by 19" tall. As far as carrying capacity is concerned, that's dependent on the vehicle you have. Just go to your vehicle's manual and figure out its specifications. Now, there have been some customer comments on this product.

One issue that was brought up was that this actually came loose while they we're driving, and when they tried to re-attach it, the plastic pieces we're broken. So, with that, just make sure you're strapping everything down nice and tight before you leave, and also you trying to make sure the seal's in place to make sure no rain or anything like that gets in while you drive as well.Another customer issue was that some of the fabric was torn, and it came loose again, and they felt that it was because it was moving from side to side. So, again, always make sure everything is tightened down properly, but also having the mat underneath helps keep that bag staying in place while you travel. When comparing this with other products, one that comes up is going to be the Thule Interstate Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number TH869. The biggest difference between these two, besides the general shape of the bags, is going to be how much space they have on the inside, with the Thule having 16 cubic feet and the Sport 3 having 18 cubic feet. The biggest advantage the Rightline Gear has is that it attaches to vehicles with or without roof rack systems, while the Thule Interstate requires a roof rack system. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the Rightline Sport 3, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.

We'll first take it out of its convenient carrying tote. We'll starting by folding it out. It looks like this is going to be the top side. You can tell, because the buckles are going to be on the top. Now, before we place it onto the roof of our vehicle, it is recommended that you just quickly wash it off with a little bit of soap and water so it's nice and clean, and you're not going to be dragging dirt back and forth across your roof. Before we actually install our bags, it's a good idea to use the Rightline Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad for the Rightline Rooftop Cargo Bags, part number RL100650.

This ensures that the bag won't move back and forth while you're driving. We'll take our non-skid pad, and we'll set it on the roof of our vehicle in the general spot where our bag's going to be. You want to make sure that the textured side is facing up. This here's the textured side, making sure it's facing up. This is the non-textured side. While this is not a necessity for the Rightline bags, it's definitely a help. Now, at this point, depending on the size of the bag that you're hauling, you can cut this pad to length to fit more properly around the bag itself. Before we set this onto our roof, we're going to unzip it completely all the way around. Now we can set our bag onto the roof. When you do this, you want to make sure the non-opening end goes towards the front, and open up the flag, and we can start loading our gear. Once we have everything installed, then we can start zipping it up on both sides, and they're going to meet up in the end here.As we zip these done, you want to make sure you connect, or at least reconnect, the hook and the fasteners all the way around to make sure that the flap stays in place. In this case, we're going to keep the zippers to the corner here so it's just a little easier to get to next time. At this point it's good if you have a padlock or something like that that can fit through the zipper holes, connect those two up, and secure them in place.Next we can install our straps. To do that, you want to make sure you use the proper buckle for each situation. If you we're to have a roof rack attached to your vehicle, you would use the front buckle. Since this one does not have a roof rack on it, we'll be using the side one here. We'll start by taking our strap and feeding it through the buckle, and then we'll go to the inside of the vehicle and install the hook. On the inside of the vehicle, we'll take our hook, and it goes on the inside panel like so. We'll do this on the other side as well. Then you can pull the strap tight, and then we simply just shut the door. Then we'll take any excess that we may have and just wrap it around just to make sure it's not flapping around while we drive, making an annoying sound and stuff like that. Just a simple knot will do. Now we have a place on our vehicle with factory raised side rails, where you don't need a hook to fasten it down. Instead, you would actually remove the hook and the strap completely. Then you have this loop on the end you'll wrap underneath, put our strap through, and then we'll strap it down that way. Get it nice and tight and then tie off the excess. When you're finished using the Rightline bag, it has this convenient tote that you can place in the rear of the vehicle so it's ready for next time. There you have it for the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Rooftop Cargo Bag, part number RL100S30.

I've only had the opportunity to use this storage bag for one round trip from Dallas to Santa Fe, but it held up perfectly and kept everything dry during a heavy rain. I did check the straps about every 4 hours of driving, and found that they did need to be tightened a little. I would recommend this product! 436841

I think it's a little over priced, but well made. We went though an absolute monsoon with hard rain for over an hour and no water entered carrier. I did use it as intended, zippers to rear and all velcro secured on sides to conceal the zipper. I think the bottom could have had some cushion to it and I'm not wild about advertising for them with the large logos. Overall, pretty good value. 295020

I have used the carrier twice now on long multi-day trips and original review stands. I will add this is a perfect fit and max size you can have on top of a Nissan Xterra while retaining the rear bar. Our X had two bars and I had to remove one to fit this carrier between the cargo box and rear bar that is adjusted all the way aft. Its a good bag and probably cant be beat for the money for something you expect to use once a twice a year and last many years.

Ask the Experts about this Rightline Gear Roof Bag

Do you have a question about this Roof Bag?

  • What are the Differences Between Roof Bag on Naked Roof and Roof Rack Mounted Bag?
  • Apart from how the rooftop bags mount there is little difference between the cargo bags that go on the naked roof of your 2013 Kia Soul or one that attaches to a roof rack. To avoid having to put a pricey roof rack on your Soul, I strongly recommend going with a bag that mounts to your naked roof such as the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S20. This bag is waterproof, has 15 cubic feet of storage and is 44" long x 36" wide x 19" tall. You can mount the Rightline by running...

We have the part # RL100S30 which has 18 cubic feet and measures 48 x 80 x 19. Part # RL100S20 which is 15 cubic feet and measures 44 x 36 x 19. Part # RL100S10 which is 12 cubic feet and measures 38 x 34 x 19. Any of these will work, but I would compare the dimensions to the dimensions of your roof and pick the one that would fit best.

When you put it on the vehicle's roof you always want the zippered 19 inch side on the back of the vehicle and the 14 inch logo side facing forwards. It is designed in a wedge shape to be more aerodynamic according to Rightline.

  • There are a couple of reasons why I don't think using this without a roof rack is the best way to go, but I'm not going to tell you that it's not possible. The difference between carrying objects on your naked roof compared to when mounted to a roof rack with cargo carrier, is that the roof racks are going to be mounted to the strongest points on the vehicle roof and distributing the load to the pillars/frame of the vehicle. With that said on the Rhino-Rack roof rack bars # RRVA118B-2 and feet # RRSX022 the bottoms of the bars will be approximately 1 inch up from the tops of...

  • Rooftop Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hardtop
  • We offer many rooftop cargo carriers ranging from baskets to boxes and even bags. Before you load a cargo carrier on the roof of your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, I recommend installing a roof rack if you do not already have one. If you do not already have a roof rack on your Jeep, then I recommend the Thule roof rack, which consists of the 60 inch SquareBars, # TH712500, and the Rapid Gutter Feet, # TH300R. The feet of this roof rack mount on the rain gutters on your vehicle. With...

  • Will the Rightline Sport 3 Roof Cargo bag fit on a 2016 Mazda CX-5?
  • Yes, the Rightline Sport 3 Roof Cargo bag # RL100S20 that you referenced is designed to fit SUVs, crossovers and minivans with naked roofs, raised side rails, crossbars, or cargo baskets so it would work well on the roof of a 2016 Mazda CX-5.

  • How to Use the Rightline Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S20 with a Van With Sliding Doors
  • Sounds like your Dodge Grand Caravan has sliding rear doors, what you would want to use with the part # RL100S20 that you referenced is the Car Clips part # RL100600 so that the strap doesn't have to pass through the door and interior of your vehicle. These clips will clip onto the door ledges so that the strap won't interfere with your sliding door closing.

  • Is Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack Adjustable on 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ E Group Package
  • The E Group rails on your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee actually only offer fixed points for the Thule WingBar Evo roof rack like parts # TH711420, # TH460R, and fit Kit # THKIT3142. Unfortunately if you have adjusted the feet of your Thule cargo box around (if that is possible) and it will not fit far enough forward enough for your rear hatch to open without making contact then you will need to either get a new box or use an alternative method. We actually have a review video of the Thule...

  • Recommended Roof Mount Cargo Bar for Carrying Golf Clubs on 2008 Pontiac Torrent
  • The average golf bag with clubs measures around 50x12x10, so at first glance, you'd want something a little longer than the Rightline # RL100E20 you referenced. I'd recommend the Rightline Sport 3 XL 18 cubic foot bag, part # RL100S30 which measures 48 x 40 x 19 inches. This is the largest bag we offer that will be able to mount directly to your roof rack without needing a roof basket. This bag is a little shorter than average at 48 inches long, so all 4 ladies will need to measure the...
