Features:

  • Cargo bag lets you carry gear on back of your vehicle with or without a roof rack
    • Lets you use your roof rack to carry kayaks, bikes, skis, and other gear
    • Great alternative to a hitch-mounted cargo carrier when you are already towing a trailer
    • Does not cause the aerodynamic drag that's common with rooftop cargo bags - saves you gas money
  • Waterproof, PVC semi-coated mesh XT keeps cargo clean and dry
    • Blocks UV rays to help prevent fading - rated UPF 50
    • Welded seams help block out moisture
  • Urethane-coated zipper and 1-1/4" protective flap keep water out
    • Zipper pulls have slots that allow you to lock the bag closed and secure it to your roof
  • Tent-pole-like framing in the bottom adds support and structure for loading gear
  • Roof protection pads help to keep the straps from rubbing on your roof
  • License plate sleeve on the rear of the bag lets you relocate your plate if the bag covers it

    • Bottom straps attach to your bumper or hitch, or underneath your bumper
    • Long support strap belts the bag tightly to your hatch

  • Weight capacity: 100 lbs
  • Dimensions: 40" long x 20" wide 28" tall

Note: Do not exceed your roof rack's weight capacity when using the cargo carrier. Add the weight of all the cargo on the roof plus the weight of the packed carrier to be sure the total does not exceed your roof's carrying capacity.

The Rightline Gear Car Back carrier lets you haul your gear on the back of your vehicle. It includes straps and clips that let you attach it to your roof rack or to your rear hatch door, and it frees up your hitch so you can also tow a trailer, or carry a bike rack. Since it rests on the back of your vehicle it's more aerodynamic than roof-mounted cargo carriers, it avoids rain and bug splatter, and is easy to load and unload.

Loads and Unloads Quickly

Pack Right cargo carrier resting on back of SUV

It can be hard to access a bag that is mounted to your vehicle's roof. Since this bag is mounted to the back of your vehicle it's alwasy going to be easy to reach. And it eliminates the need to climb on your vehicle to grab something from the carrier. Load the bag either before you hang it on your vehicle or while it's suspended from the back. A handle on each side of the carrier carrier makes the bag easy to lift on and off your vehicle.

This cargo bag is also great if you're already carrying skis, snowboards, bikes, or another cargo bag on your roof and need a place to carry more luggage.

Tent Pole Framing Helps carrier Hold Its Shape

Tent-pole framing on bottom of Rightline Gear PackRight saddle bagCloseup of steel framing on bottom of Rightline Gear saddle bag

Lightweight, tent-pole-like framing on the bottom of the bag helps it hold its shape so that it doesn't fold over onto itself. This makes it easier to load and unload your cargo.

PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

Closeup of Sport Jr. cargo bag material and inner PVC layer

The bag is made of PVC semi-coated polyester mesh XT. The material is treated with WeatherGuard and blocks 98 percent of UV rays to help prevent fading. The PVC material is also strengthened with a nylon grid that helps prevent rips and tears. This waterproof fabric stays flexible in hot or cold temperatures so it can be folded for compact storage.

Easy Installation

Rightline Gear cargo carrier hanging from rear crossbar of luggage rackPack Right cargo bag straps attached to vehicle hitch

The carrier rests on the back of your vehicle, suspended from your roof rack's side rails or rear crossbar by two sturdy straps. Two bottom straps on the bag attach to your bumper or hitch, or underneath your bumper.

If you don't have a roof rack there are 2 clips included that let you mount the bag to your rear hatch door.

Padding between vehicle and cargo straps of Rightline Gear saddle bag

Soft pads at the top of each cargo strap protect your vehicle from scratches while the bag hangs from your luggage rack.

Pack Right cargo bag with long strap tightened like a belt to hold the carrier in place

Tighten the long support strap around the bag and your vehicle's hatch like a belt.

If you don't have a roof rack, you can mount the bag on the top of your hatch door using the 2 included car clips.

To lock up the bag during pit stops, run a Rightline Gear locking cable (RL100640 - sold separately) through the cutouts in the zipper pulls.

License plate sleeve on Rightline Gear cargo bag

The carrier comes with a license plate sleeve so that you can display your plate even if the bag is blocking a clear view of your tag.

Drawstring storage bag for Rightline Gear cargo saddle bag

The bag also includes a sack for storage. And the setup instructions are sewn into the stuff sack, so you'll always be ready to saddle up and go.

Video Transcript for Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag, part number RL100B90. If you like the idea of a hitch mounted cargo carrier but don't have a hitch, check out the Rightline Gear Hatch Saddlebag. It's also great if you do have a hitch but would like to use it for towing and still need the extra space. It's designed for use with vans or SUVs, it simply attaches to your raised side rails or roof rack system. If you don't have either, no problem, you could pick up the Rightline Saddlebag Car clips with part number RL100605. This will allow you to attach the saddlebags to your vehicle without a roof rack system.

It offers 13 cubic feet of storage space with a weight capacity of up to 100 pounds of gear. Roof top cargo carriers can cause an impact in your fuel economy and they can also create unwanted wind noise and drag.Since the saddlebag sits behind the vehicle in its slip stream, it does not have the same impact on fuel efficiency as roof top cargo carriers. Also, compared to roof mounted options its got a more convenient loading height so you could easily get at your gear. And if your roof is already full, it's a great place to stash additional gear. It's made from a waterproof 600 to near woven polyester.

Here you can see the PVC inner layer that's gonna keep your cargo clean and dry. The base features tent pole like framing to give the bag structure and help support your gear. If you're wondering about security, the zipper poles can be locked using the Rightline cable lock and you can pick that up with part number RL100640. Since it does block your license plate, it does feature a license plate relocation pouch so you can remain legal.Like many of our customers, you're probably wondering if the saddlebag is gonna harm your vehicle. We've checked with the manufacturer and their in-house testing and customer feedback shows that when all the straps are tight the saddlebag will not move.

Since the bad won't move, there's no chance for rubbing that will harm your vehicle's finish. If you're still concerned, you could pick up the non skid protection pad with part number RL100650. This will just sit between the saddlebag and your vehicle. You'll also wanna pay attention to your rear wiper blade, depending on its location, you may or may not be able to use it during your trip. You're gonna be limited to your rear hatch access.

If you have a rear window that can be opened, you may have access to that. Also, you wanna be sure that you don't set your bag so low that it's gonna interfere with your exhaust.Rightline also recommends that you check your straps periodically throughout your trip to ensure that everything remains in place. One of our customers, Ellis, says, "We used this for our vacation this year and it worked wonderfully. In the past we have always used roof top carriers but I always found those hard to maneuver. This is very easy to attach and load and unload plus you can store it in the closet on vacation. Highly recommend." Now let's go ahead and take it out on our test course and see how it performs. First, let's go into our slalom. This is gonna show side to side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then on to our solid speed bumps. This is gonna show an up and down action such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. And then finally onto our alternating speed bumps. This is gonna simulate driving over a pot hole or uneven pavement. When you're all done, it folds up nicely in the included storage bag.Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed on your vehicle. The first thing you wanna do is load it up with your cargo. Now you'll wanna open up your vehicle's rear hatch just enough to where we can run the belt strap around the rear hatch door. Now you wanna be sure that it's not twisted. Once we get it around, I'm gonna hold it tight and then I'm gonna close it back up. Now we've ready to set our bag in place. You wanna be sure that your side buckles are unbuckled. With an extra set of hands we'll pick up on the handle on the side, raise it up and begin running our straps. Now our vehicle has raised side rails so what we're gonna do is we're gonna take those side buckles, we're gonna come from the inside, go underneath and come to the outside. I'm gonna bring it back around. Now if you we're attaching it to a cross bar, you would go underneath and then back over. Then we'll just connect it to our buckle. Now you wanna be sure it's not obstructing your rear view. If you need to you can adjust your straps to lower the bag down. With it in place, now we can attach our belt. We'll just bring it around, make sure it's not twisted and then we can tighten it up. Finally, we'll run our bottom straps. So we'll take our strap and we're gonna pass it through the loop here on our bag, just above our frame, then we'll pass it through the next one. From there, I'm gonna go to my hitch but if you don't have a hitch you can go through a toe loop or another secure point on your vehicle. Gonna pull it up, run it through the buckle and then pull it nice and tight. Then we're gonna repeat the same process on the other side. And that's gonna complete our look at the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag, part number RL100B90.

We bought this for our family to move across country. We used it on the back of a Honda Odyssey. It worked great. We had to remove it to open the lift gate, but it was easy for two adults to do. 681612

Very pleased with how quickly this shipped and I received it. I assembled in a few minutes. I can tell that this product is built to be waterproof, and will be able to withstand wear and tear of the road. From the directions this looks easy to install. The nice thing about this product is it can be loaded and then strapped on instead of trying to load it on top of the car! 471177

Love this bag! We load all our snowmobile gear in it and put it in the bed of our pick up truck. Keeps it dry during our driving trip and it’s only one trip to/from Truck to motel room. Great investment ! 466402

Worked Great! kept everything dry. We mounted a bike rack, under and behind it, using a hitch step extension. We looked like the Beverly Hill Billies with everything we had on the back but we had zero issues! 402019

This bag held a lot and was fairly easy to mount on my Subaru, even tho I had failed to buy the needed clips. The zipper was hard to use, but very sturdy. However, it leaked!! It was on the back of my car through an all-night soft rain and by the time I arrived an hour away at our location, half of the things inside needed to be dried out somewhat. That was very disappointing. So I will not trust its' rain-worthiness again. 388645

Nice products well constructed. fits all my surf and ski stuff. The only cons is getting it to be squared when it is not fully filled.Specially when mixing clothes and ski boos and anything harder I ended up using a PVC box in the inside to give it the from I needed. 249093

Product worked out great. We used it while camping last weekend. TRhe only disadvantage is that it hangs right on the air fin above the rear window. We are worried it may casue it to break. We have a couple of ideas how to rectify this, and will let you know how it goes. Also, customer service was great. I had questions, and there was a helpful, quick response. 218537

I have a 2008 Ford Edge...will this work for it. The Edge has that spoiler looking flair off the back made of plastic, and I am worried the straps, when weighted down, will break that spoiler off. What do you think?

-- comment by: Josh S - 04/25/2014

It would depend on what you're hauling in the bag. If you're hauling anything of weight, I would steer clear of this bag because those top straps will have a lot of weight. A hitch mounted carrier or roof mounted carrier or bag would be better. Does your Edge have a hitch or any type of a roof rack or rails?

Kia sorrento fit?

Rightline Gear doesn't have a fit guide for this item, it's not really vehicle specific. As long as you have a roof rack that you can attach the straps to and some good anchor points on the underside like a hitch, the bag should work.

Would the saddlebag work on a 2009 Rav 4 with the spare tire still attached to the back door?

-- comment by: Jim M - 07/13/2013

I called up Rightline and found out that it will not work on the back of vehicle with a rear mounted spare: RAV 4, CR-V, Wrangler. The bag sits too far from the vehicle to work. We do have a spare tire mounted cargo basket that may work out for you. It's from Surco, part SPSJ4319.

It could be used on your Express van. If you do not have any sort of roof rack or roof rails, you will also need to add part RL100605. These are clips that will allow you to secure the top straps to the top edges of the double doors. Do keep an eye on these as you load the bag.

Ask the Experts about this Rightline Gear Roof Bag

Do you have a question about this Roof Bag?

  • Can Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag RL100B90 Install on Vehicle with Roofline Spoiler
  • The roofline spoiler on your 2016 Nissan Rogue (thank you for the photo!) is not intended to bear any weight so if you wish to attach the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag # RL100B90 you will need to connect the straps to your raised roof side rails and then around the sides of the spoiler to avoid placing weight/stress on it. You also need to make sure you have at least 40-inches of space between the two tail lights so that they are not blocked. This bag has no security provisions...

  • Will the Rightline Cargo Hatch Saddlebag fit a 2014 Dodge Journey
  • The 2014 Dodge Journey has a small spoiler at the top of rear hatch. Because of that spoiler you will not be able to hook in the car clips, # RL100605, or use the Rightline cargo bag, # RL100B90. The clips and straps would put too much stress on that spoiler. What I recommend is a cargo bag that can mount to a naked roof or vehicle with a roof rack, see link. Rightline bag # RL100S30 is a popular option. I also recommend a protective pad, # RL100650, to protect the roof when using the bag.

  • Rightline Cargo Bag Recommendation for Hyundai Tucson with Naked Roof
  • I have a similar solution that may interest you by Rightline, but the # RL100B90 that you referenced does require a roof rack be installed on the vehicle. Instead the Rightline Gear Sport 1 part # RL100S10 can attach to a vehicle with a naked roof, the difference though is that it rests on top of the vehicle and not at the rear. This can carry up to 12 cubic feet which is similar to the other bag that can carry up to 13. I also recommend a protective pad, # RL100650, to protect the...

  • Will the Rightline Saddlebag Fit a 2010 Honda Fit Sport with Rear Spoiler
  • I do not recommend using the Rightline Saddlebag, # RL100B90, on your 2010 Honda Fit Sport because of the spoiler and because the bag would block much of the rear visibility on the Fit. To carry cargo on the rear of the FIt you can install a trailer hitch, # 24826, and use a hitch mount cargo carrier, # C18110, with cargo bag # 59102. Please consult the vehicle owners manual for the towing and tongue weight capacities. The combined weight of the carrier (about 25 pounds) and the cargo...

  • Will Water Leak Into a 2010 Nissan Rouge When Using a Roof Mount Cargo Bag for Bare Roofs
  • Even if you were to use a cargo bag that can install on a naked roof water should not be able to leak into the vehicle. The weather stripping on the inside of the doors should still prevent that from happening. I have not heard of any complaints yet of water getting in. This is because on many vehicles there is weather stripping on the door and on the door frame or body of the vehicle to create the best seal. If your 2010 Rogue does not have this double type of weatherstripping then...

  • Will the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag Part # RL100B90 Fit a 2011 Chevrolet HHR
  • The Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag part # RL100B90 is an extremely universal cargo bag for use on the back hatch of most suv's. They are not vehicle specific but after reviewing both the cargo bag and a 2011 Chevrolet HHR, I don't see any reason as to why they would not work with one another. The only thing I can think of is that you may lose a bit of visibility at the bottom portion of your rear window due to the size of the bag in comparison to the hatch. The bag includes a sack...

  • Will the Rightline Saddlebag Fit a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica
  • The Rightline Saddlebag # RL100B90 is not vehicle specific so you can use it on your 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. If the vehicle does not have a roof rack or if it only has side rails that are not raised off the roof you will also need car clips # RL100605.

  • Will Rightline Cargo Hatch Saddlebag # RL100B90 Fit 2007 Pontiac Vibe
  • As long as your 2007 Pontiac Vibe has at least 40 inches of space between the taillights, the Rightline Cargo Hatch Saddlebag, # RL100B90, will work great for you. If your Vibe has a bare roof, you will also need the Car Clips, # RL100605, in order to hook the top two straps of the saddlebag carrier over your hatch door. For vehicles equipped with factory side rails or a roof rack, no additional equipment is needed. I have attached a short video for you. Best wishes on the move!!

  • Can Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag be Used on 2013 Toyota Sienna with Spoiler
  • Because of the size and design of the rear spoiler on your 2013 Toyota Sienna, I do not recommend using the Rightline Gear Cargo Hatch Saddlebag # RL100B90 referenced in your question. As you mentioned, tightening down the straps on the bag will put too much stress on the spoiler, potentially leading to damage on the vehicle. Another option I recommend looking at is a roof back like the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S20. This will actually provide a slightly larger...

  • Carrying Cargo on the Roof, Rear Hatch, or Trailer Hitch on a 2011 Honda CR-V
  • Your best option for the 2011 Honda CR-V is to go with the Pulse L box, # TH615. It is shorter than the Force XL box by 8 inches and will not interfere with the hatch as much (though it is likely) or overhang the front as much. Both boxes will fit the AeroBlade Edge roof rack # TH7602-TH7602. Fit kit # THKIT3042 is also needed to install the rack on your CR-V. As you can see in the video I have linked the antenna did have to come off. However, if the XM antenna on your CR-V does not...

  • Will the Rightline Cargo Hatch Saddlebag Fit a 2005 Dodge Durango
  • In the picture for the Rightline Saddlebag (they should have called it an SUV Backpack!) the carrier is secured to the rear bar of a roof rack. But you do not have to have a roof rack to install the bag on your 2005 Dodge Durango. If your Durango does not have that bar you will just need to use the optional car clips, # RL100605, which are sold separately to secure the bag to the vehicle. The attach to the gap between the top of the hatch and vehicle roof. Other than potentially needing...
