Video Transcript for ProGrip Retractable Ratchet Tie-Down Strap Review

Adam: What's going on, everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Pro Grip retractable ratchet straps. So this we're using right now on a boat trailer, just because whenever we're unloading a boat, I usually had to undo this strap. And there was a couple of times where it fell in the water. I wanted something that's just going to stay put on my trailer. So it's going to make it really, really easy to load it up and unload it.

This way all I got to do is just pull this lever, done deal. That loosens it up, pull it out, and now we're pretty much ready to go. I don't have to worry about my straps falling in the water and losing them. That's a sunken cost, but with all of that water and moisture, if you do drop it in the water and not lose it, it is starting to wear away at this hinge. So all in all, I think this is going to be a great thing for you guys' boat trailers at home. Don't get me wrong, these aren't just for boat trailers.

That's just one of the examples. We can use it on a lot of different applications. We just have a trailer. I usually put a bunch of different stuff on here and having ratchet straps just on your trailer, ready to roll is really, really awesome. It's going to just mount in really, really nicely and just make it really, really quick, especially if you guys are business owners.

Let's just say you have a couple of trailers and you have your employees use the trailers, but you don't really have to kind of find all your ratchet straps. "Okay, here, I got four here. I got two." The trailers are going to be set up, ready to go for whatever they want to throw at it.What we're going to need to be able to use this strap is, one, we're going to need a hole with a diameter of about nine sixteenths. That is the diameter of the bolt that they give us, but we don't necessarily have to use that. One other thing we're going to need is obviously we're only going to need about four feet of strap because that's how much we get with this strap.

So if you guys have something that's a little bit farther than four feet away, wherever you're going to mount it down to, be mindful we are going to run out of strap. The strap is going to be about an inch and seven eighths wide. When it comes to the housing of the actual strap itself, the ratcheting mechanism is going to be about four and seven eighths inches long. We're going to have about three and 11 sixteenths wide, and it is going to be about two and a half inches tall. So just make sure you have the right size hole. And of course we have a place to be able to put it and use it properly. What we have here is a pontoon boat, weighs about 2200 pounds with the straps in the back, each one's going to have a working load limit of a thousand pounds. We have two back here. So that's 2000 pounds of working load limit. And each are going to have about 3000 pounds of brake strength, but we have a third one just because the two in the back is about 2000 pounds of working load limit. The third one is upfront, which is going to push us over the weight of the pontoon boat, which is 2200 pounds. So whatever you guys plan on tying down, use the working load limit of the straps and use enough straps to be able to exceed the amount of weight, whatever you guys may be tying down. With our hook here, it is an S hook, which has a nice coating on it. So depending on what you guys are tying down, we really don't have to worry about scuffing it up or have to worry about wrapping it around and hooking it onto itself. I don't suggest that, but the coating on the hook is going to prevent any damage from that happening. Both on our boat trailer and our construction trailer, we had to grab different hardware. All we had to make sure of is that the diameter of the threaded portion of the bolt is going to be no larger than a half an inch. The little bracket here, part of the ratchet strap, that hole in there is going to be a half an inch wide. So just be mindful of that whenever you guys are picking out your hardware. To get the straps installed, first we just need to find a hole in the trailer. We have a couple of different options with the trailer we have here. We do have a hole that's already in here, and that's what we we're using to kind of tie it down before. So that's what I'm going to use. Just kind of mounted up to that on this side, kind of. But this is the hardware that it comes with. A little too long for us, and we really needed some threads up here to be able to use it, but still a little too long. This comes with it. If you guys are planning on drilling through a trailer or something like that, that's what comes with it, but I'm not using those today. I just got a smaller, shorter bolt here, and that's what I'm going to use. But I am going to use a lock washer and a washer.Since my handle is going to prevent me from doing it on this side, I'm going to open this up and put it onto this side. Go ahead and put the nylon lock nut on the other end. If you guys do grab your own hardware, get a lock nut. And if you guys could get great eight bolts, because this is going to end up in the water whenever we unload our boat, I would definitely go ahead and do that.Go ahead and find the appropriate tools to tighten down whatever hardware you guys end up using. And we do want to rotate it to where it's going to be the most ideal for whatever we're tying down. I think that's going to be the best here. So let's do that. All right. Once it's nice and tight, you guys are pretty much ready to go. Pull it out, hook it up. cinch it down, done deal. Now I'm going to go ahead and do that same exact thing on the other side, and that's pretty much it for a look at the Pro Grip retractable ratchet strap..

Right out of the package I think this ratchet system is weak and feeble. Perhaps upgrade the spring on the lever? I doubt I’ll get much use from this before I have to replace it.

I have four of these bolted to my aluminum tilt bed UTV trailer. Takes less than a minute to secure or unload. These straps perform flawless time after time.
