Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 2 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 36-1/2" and 42".

If you find that you have a smaller entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 23-3/4" wide and 26-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

Video Transcript for Review of MORryde RV and Camper Steps - Motorhome - MR88RR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the Morryde's rides step above fold down steps for 23 and three quarter inch to 26 and one quarter inch RV doorframes. Now, these are manually operated RV steps makes it very easy to get into and out of your travel trailer or fifth wheel, they simply fold down for use or you can fold them back up for travel. They do have a grab handle right here on the second step from the top here, which is nice, provides a nice handhold when you're maneuvering the steps. So, when you go to put them up in storage you just grab that handle, push them up the middle latch into place, and then to pull them down, you just grab that handle, pull on them, you twist your handle to release the latch and then you'll pull with that handle and drop them all the way down to be able to use them. Now, the steps will lift up and lock into place and they'll stow inside your entry door when they're not being used.

This will help keep the steps protected from the elements during travel, provides a nice alternative to installing them under the door cause it eliminates the need to have to cut into the metal skirting of the RV. Now, a couple of things I do want to talk about is first these hinge plates. The hinge plates right up here is what will attach to the top frame here and that's what attaches your steps to your RV. What's nice about this is the pins in them. You can see these little tabs sticking out.

If you pull that pin out, that'll release the steps from those hinge plates and where that comes into play is if by chance you're going to store your RV at a tight storage lot where there's no room between each one so you can't drop the steps down. Before you store it what you'll want to do is take the steps off. So, to make it simple, you just pull the pin off on this side on the other side and it'll release it from those hinge plates. The hinge plates will stay attached to your RV. And then when you're ready to attach it, just line it up put your pins back in and your ready to go.

Also wanted to show you, this is the latch, when we talk about we lift it up and it latches closed, you can see the latch, there's a handle right in the middle here and if you turn that handle you can see the white tab right here in the middle will retract in. So, that releases it from the doorframe. So, when you twist that or release it and then you can pull it down. The nice thing about it is when you go to lift these up to lock it in the stow position you don't have to use that handle because these tabs have an angle to it. You just push it up and it'll automatically latch it into place and hold it up.

Now, the other ones we want to talk about is the leg extensions. There's one on this end, one on this side. What's nice about this, these will create a nice sturdy connection with the ground to eliminate bounce, reduces the potential for slipping or falling during use. And it helps the stairs remain stable on uneven terrain because each leg is independent side to side. You can pull out this one as much as you need. And this one with as much as you need on this side. And if you notice on the bottom they have these rotating feet that'll also automatically adjust to where it's going up against. Now, to release, to put them back into store they have these quick release triggers on each side. You just push in on that and it allow you to retract it all the way up into the steps and then you go to store it. Now, what's nice is when you extend these out you don't have to push the release lever. You can just pull it out as far as you need on each side to where you need it. They will adjust in one inch increments, give you a total about 13 inches of adjustable length. Now, this is a four step assembly, has an extra deep top step for easy entry and exit. And if you notice on the left side there's these threaded inserts. There's two down here and there's two right up here. And what those are for is if you want to install a hand rail to this we do sell a hand rail separately on our website. It's part number MR73AR and it'll bolt right into those inserts and give you a hand rail if you need it. It is listed on this product page as a related product. The steps themselves on the top are a nice anti-slip design to give you excellent traction. It's a nice textured surface provides traction in wet or muddy conditions. And at the front of each step you can see has a nice non-slip tread tape to help prevent any slipping. These are aluminum steps, so they are rust-proof and scratch resistant, also makes them very lightweight. So, it makes lifting or lowering them virtually effortless. The very top here where the hinge plates are this is a powder coated steel frame. It is corrosion resistant. And what's nice about these steps is they are preassembled. So, when you get them, they're just like this all put together, makes it easier to install. All you have to do is mount the hinge plates to your vehicle. And they do include the mounting hardware for those hinge plates. There's a bag of the screws right there that you install these with. These steps are made in the USA. Now, a few measurements that you need are going to need to verify the fit of these stairs to your vehicle or to your RV. The entry height which is going to be measured from the ground to your door threshold to where the door you'd be entering it. So, the ground up to there, these steps will fit a 36 and a half inch to 42 inch entry height. The doorway width, these will fit a 23 and three quarter inch to 26 and one quarter inch wide doorway. Now, the dimension on the steps themselves the width of them will measure inside the inside. It's going to be 19 and a half inches. The top step we mentioned, the depth of it is deeper than the other three. So, it's going to be 10 and five eighths inches. The other three steps are going to be eight inches deep and the drop or rise of each step as you go up that distance, it's going to be right at eight inches. Now, the heights of these stairs when you do flip them up into the travel or stow position is going to be about 46 inches tall. And the weight capacity on them is, are 500 pounds. But, that should do it for the review on the Morryde's step above fold down steps for the 23 and three quarter inch to 26 and one quarter inch RV door frames..

Install was just as advertised, quick, simple and easy. Very stable set of steps. I had to remove the original steps to make room for an auto leveling system. The steps were right where the rear jack needed to be placed.

Review from a similar StepAbove in RV and Camper Steps

Been ordering from etrailer.com for several years. This purchase took a solid 2 months to receive, as the product was not in stock and it was ordered during the great fake flu virus. While waiting, etrailer "contacted" me several times advising of the status, and even offered to swap with a similar product in order to receive faster. I waited. The product arrived in tact and in excellent condition. Products are products. etrailer customer service, is exemplary, as well as the information and videos that are made to explain various items, and how to install them properly. You cant go wrong. I need a new canopy. As soon as I receive authorization from the boss, I will be purchasing from etrailer.

Very well constructed. There needs to be an opposite bend on the bridge over the threshold, needs to sit more flat on the threshold. I had to modify the screen and bottom of the entry door. My door also opens to the wheel well, which causes the door flange on the step to just barely hit the screen edge, with a little pressure I can make it by. I have a 2018 KZ Mini Rear bathroom 18’.

Steps are great. Nicole T did an excellent job tracking down the supplier order and finally getting to me. We all know supplies are a mess. I ordered steps on March 30, 2021. Back order after back order and reorder of different step never showed up from factory. etrailer stayed on it when I called each time. Nicole sent to me express no charge so I could make my trip on time! Please note: the box MORryde ships these steps in in is highly inadequate, I've seen others like mine, box all broke open, luckily no damage and all parts there. For this price and weigh go item, MORyde should really use a better box, inspect carefully upon receipt.

Overall the step is much more stable than the original springboard that came with our trailer. The instructions were close to being right. Only problem was you need to move the steps back approximately 15/16" of an inch from the threshold in order for your door to close. Now I have 2 extra holes in my floor. Other than that they work well. Thanks.

The steps were perfect fit and installed easily in about ten minutes. They are well made and definitely safer than the stock steps that came on our travel trailer. The steps were missing the leg extensions but an email to customer service and they were quickly sent directly from manufacturers. Great customer service from Michelle her team!

Very nice product well constructed and installs in just a few minutes, unless you have to modify your screen door as I had to do. UPS pretty much destroyed the box the steps were packed in, fortunately no parts were lost. Recommend better packaging or change carriers to one that is a little more careful with their shipments.

We have a Joyco Jayflight with a small door, with some slight modifications we got it to fit. Works great and makes it a lot easer to get in and out of our unit. For this unit, it should be 1/2" smaller in width. We trimed 3/8" from top by grinding down the mounting bracket..

Very nice product and the installation of the steps was a breeze. I did have to to trim the bottom of my screen door a little bit. Regular door closed just fine.

Love the new steps. Took about 30 minutes to install. Box it came in was torn up pretty badly and I had to straighten up the door latch on the left side that was damaged and bent in from UPS but it was no trouble. Shipped here quicker than I expected which is always the case from etrailer. Thank you

Easy install, overall. Morryde's detailed instructions on how to measure to get the correct model was really valuable. Etrailer shipment arrived on time and undamaged. Installation was quick and easy. I do recommend an extra set of hands for the install. Our hinge had to bolt against the threshold and not 15/16" back from the threshold as stated in the instructions.

The steps are fantastic but the upgraded hinges are not covered in the instructions. You no longer need to attach the hinge 15/16” from the threshold. So, steps are 5+ stars. Instructions are 3.

Received the steps and had them installed in 30 minutes, great product and well worth the changeout. So sturdy and further apart than the folding step. You cannot tell when someone is coming up the steps now where as before the entire camper rocked. Thank etrailor so much for keeping status updates to us.

  • Recommended Steps for Schoolie Conversion with 46" Entry Height
I have a solution for you to solve the step conundrum that you're in, but your assumption is correct; the MORryde # MR88RR are also the tallest available option as far as fold up steps go and they would only work on entries up to 42". If your entry is in the 45"-46" range then these would not be an option. Your best bet is going to be using something like the TorkLift GlowStep Revolution Scissor Steps w/ Landing Gear - 6 Steps - 27-1/2" Base - 325 lbs # TLA8006 which can be used on entry...
