Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 34" and 36".

If you find that you have a smaller or larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 21-3/4" wide and 22-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

Video Transcript for Review of MORryde RV and Camper Steps - Fold-Down Motorhome Steps - MR38RR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this MORryde StepAbove fold-down steps for a 21 3/4-inch to a 22 1/4-inch RV door frame. These are manually-operated RV steps. Make it very easy to get into and out of your travel trailer or your fifth-wheel. Basically, you just simply fold down the steps for use, and then when you're done, fold them back up for travel. The steps will lift up, and over here is a latch that'll lock into place on your door frame.

They'll stow inside your entry door when you're not being used. This'll help keep the steps protected from the elements during travel, and it also provides an alternative to installing them under the door. It eliminates the need to have to cut into your metal skirting of your RV. The hinge plates right up here; these will mount to the threshold of your RV. I wanted to zoom in and show you, they have a nice little feature here that lets you quickly detach the steps from the door entrance if needed.

You can see, here's your hinge plate, and then you'll see this little lever right here. That'll actually be a pin that you can pull out and detach the steps. Why you wanna do that; the reason is 'cause if it's perfect, like if you're in a storage lot that has very tight storage, and it's real close between RVs and you might not be enough space to fold these steps down, this way it'll let you take out the steps so you can still get in there, not have to worry about folding them out. The leg extensions on these; they're really nice, as they create a nice, sturdy connection with the ground, eliminate any bounce. Reduces the potential for slipping or falling during use.

It'll remain stable even on uneven terrain because those legs individually come out and adjust, keep the steps parallel. On each side, they have the quick-release trigger. What's nice about that, you just push in that quick-release trigger and it makes it very easy to retract the step legs. Also what's nice is to extend them, you don't have to use that trigger. You can just pull them and it'll click out and extend to where you need to.

And then just to retract them, you need to push that lever in. They do adjust in about one-inch increments, giving you a total of 13 inches of adjustable length. This is a three-step assembly. The top step is an extra-deep step for easy entry and exit. Each step, they have ridges on. It's a nice anti-slip design to give you excellent traction. The textured surface provides traction in wet or muddy conditions. If you notice on the front of each step, it has this nice non-slip tread tape to prevent any slipping. The aluminum step platforms are rust-proof, scratch-resistant, and because they're aluminum, they are lightweight construction. It makes lifting them or lowering them really easy to do. The steel frame right up here is a powder-coated steel frame, which is corrosion-resistant. When you do receive these steps, they will come just like this, all pre-assembled, ready for installation. Does even include the mounting screws, this bag of mounting screws here, to allow you to install it to your RV. These steps are made in the USA. To go over some specs on this, the measurements that are needed to verify fit of these to your RV; the entry height is measured from the ground to the entry of your door, the bottom of your door. Basically, these steps will fit an entry height of 34 to 36 inches. The doorway width; these will fit a doorway width of 21 3/4 inches up to 22 1/4 inches. Few measurements on the steps themselves. We mentioned the top step. The depth of it is wider than the two bottom steps. If we measure it, it's 10 5/8-inch. The two bottom steps are both eight inches deep. The drop or rise, meaning the distance from this step up to this step and up to that step, is gonna be right at nine inches. The height of these steps; when you raise them up and put them in your doorway, the stove position height is gonna be about 40 inches. The weight capacity on these steps is 500 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the MORryde StepAbove fold-down steps for a 21 3/4-inch to 22 1/4-inch RV door frame..

Review from a similar StepAbove in RV and Camper Steps

The steps were out of stock when I ordered them, however, etrailer was excellent about keeping me informed of the status, they even offered me alternative products for the order. The steps arrived in good condition and were very easy to install. These steps are a cut above the stock steps that came with my camper and allow safer access.

Easy installation, great quality product, makes entry to our trailer much safer and more stable. Did require modification to the bottom of the screen door to allow it to close with steps extended.

One latch was bent. I fixed with a present wrench. Installation per instructions caused interference with screen and door closure... Had to modify slightly with a bend on my break to get it to sit lower and allow the door to close. Maybe this installation isn't for the everyday joe. I'm a fabricator by trade and make stuff work all the time.

Comments
This is a universal item so it is not for a specific brand of RV so there may be some tweaking needed. As long as your doorway is between 23.75 and 26.25 inches wide, it should fit okay.

Steps installed easy but think measurements should be revamped, my measurements were by the sheet and I feel steps should of been shorter to allow more flexibility in ground clearance

Review from a similar StepAbove in RV and Camper Steps

It took less than an hour to install including undoing some stuff on my camper. All the parts were present and the unit arrived intact except for a bit of a bend in the part that clamps down on the door flange when the steps are up. Major improvement over the springboard steps that come standard. One improvement could be in the packaging. The unit is so heavy that it should be packed in its own box and then that box placed in a shipping box. Mine came completely torn up and I was afraid that the install directions and hardware had gotten lost in transit, not the case though.

This 3 step ladder assembly appears well made and is very sturdy. With my wife just having had knee replacement surgery, this will make it much easier for her to get in and out of the trailer. Installation was a breeze and was competed in under 30 minutes...

Nice steps, much better than factory. Easy installation instructions. Disappointed that the clearance between the side of my RV and RV bay wall has to be 40” (vs the 36” etrailer advised) to allow space to raise and lower steps. FAST DELIVERY.

Review from a similar StepAbove in RV and Camper Steps

I think these steps will work. Doing a preliminary overview I realized that I will have to do some retro fitting in order for the door to close. My camper is 20 years old. Luckily I have a good friend who is a mechanic and has the tools and expertise to do the job. Local RV center gave an estimate of $300 to install them. I am looking forward to using these steps because I really dislike the step that came with my camper. My 4 star rating is based on how well I think they will work.

This is a great product! Very easy to install! However now I need to figure out how to sand off the bottom of my screen door slightly. I removed the sweep and it needs just a little more. I’m sure I will get it figured out soon. Great service. You guys are great!

Product seemed good, I wish I would have listened to the reviews that said people couldn’t shut there door with the steps down. The product video never mentioned door issues. Now I have 8 holes in my floor and there making me pay 72.00 to ship them back.

Step is well built and looks like it will work really good much more stable for people to enter and exit. Installation is pretty straight forward I did have to adjust a couple things. The container it was shipped in did look like it had been kicked around and the latches were both bent and needed straightening.

This is a great product and an easy install. This two step model is easily lifted in to the closed position, and improved leg adjustment eliminated to older style pin. Unfortunately, the directions from MORryde are incorrect for the current product they shipped me. The hinge did not have the cut out corner, giving access to the outermost screw when it is in the correct position. I highly recommend this product.
