Video Transcript for Lippert SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps Review

Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at one of the most popular sets of steps that we offer here. This is the SolidStep from Lippert Components, and essentially what this does is it gives us an extremely solid foundation and a great set of steps to be able to get in and out of the RV. You can see when stepping on them, there's no movement, there's no wiggle, there's no bounce. So this gives you a great sense of security when getting in and out. They can also be stored extremely easily. You just rotate that up into the stored position.

That holds him as we travel. By not having the steps hanging outside of the door here where we're throwing dirt, debris and stuff like that up on them all the time, they last so much longer. They operate very smoothly. We don't really have any issues with them at all.The operation is extremely easy. Once you get out to your campsite, just want to grab the yellow lever and rotate in either direction and allow them to come out.

You can see where that contact on the ground, it's extremely, extremely stable. We don't have to worry about that kind of unsuredness we have on the older steps where they flex out. I also like that they're solid treads. You can see there's no holes in them or anything like that. It's really handy with the pets because dogs when climbing in and out, sometimes their claws would get hung up in those other type steps, and it was just not a good situation. The tread plates also have nice grooves in them to help with any dirt or debris on our feet to help us get good traction, and you can see the traction strips that run across each one.

These are very, very good steps as far as getting in and out. Something else I really like about these steps is that each of our tread plates are 8" from each other, so it's going to be just like at home. Not going to have the issues we used to have with this step being 7", the next step being 9", where it can get a little bit confusing trying to get in and out.I also really like our landing area here. This top step's 13", so as we're coming out, we got plenty of room to step down and on. Each one below is going to be 8-1/2" deep, and you'll also see we've got this protector here.

So as we're getting into our RV, our toes aren't going to be hitting that. We're not going to be hitting that scuff plate. So after our steps are stored, our doors are closed and we're heading down the road, we don't have to worry about any damage on our areas down here.Something else I really like is how the legs where they make contact with the ground are adjustable. We've got this one extended out just a little bit further than this one because we're kind of on an uneven area here. Being able to bring those down, not only does that make contact with the ground and keep everything stiff, it keeps it nice and level too. So as we're getting in, we don't have the steps tilting one way or the other. Our legs are also very easy to adjust too. It's just a single pin for each side. We'll push that out from the back. We've got 1" increments through our holes and there's a bunch of them. So even on the worst of terrain, we could get our step level back out. Once we get the right position, just line that hole back up. We'll place our pin back in and everything's back nice, rock solid and ready to get in our coach. Now the steps are available in multiple different configurations, just depending on how high your door plate is up off the ground. In this situation, with it being a Highland like this, we're using the quad step, but it's also available in a triple and a double. So, regardless of the type of RV or motor home that you have, you'll be able to get good sure footing as you get in and out. They're also designed with many different door widths. We have fixed widths of 24, 26, 28, 30, and 32. And when measuring your door, we're using a what would be a 30" version here, our door opening is 29-1/2", so you just round up. If yours is 27-1/2, you want to round up to 28, 25-1/2, you'll round up to 26.But we also have options for really wide doors. We'll take a look at this one. They've designed these to be adjustable in width, so we can use two kits. We've got one that's going to go from 26" up to 29-7/8, one that goes from 30 up to 36. So, regardless, even if you have a really wide door, we're still going to have a solid step that'll fit it up to 36". You can see right here, we have the fully adjustable latches. So we'll just loosen up these three bolts, and that allows us to slide our release levers or our locking mechanism there, that allows us to slide it out and work with many different door sizes. Now to begin your installation process, we need to get our steps fit up to the door and centered. If you take a look right here, we've got a little trim plate here. We're going to take this off. It kind of covers our forward attachment points here, our outboard attachment points. This one just use three little screws to hold it in. Yours might be a little bit different, but we want to get that out of the way for now. At that point, we'll get our steps just laid down and on. You can see we've got two caps here, one here and one here. We need to get these off. That's going to give us our access point to get into those two outmost attachment points.Once we've got both of those out of the way, want that to be on the bottom side. We can see right through to those slots. So now we need to set up our step appropriately. Then we're going to use our hardware to get it attached. Now we're using a little bit different hardware than what comes with it. We're using black hardware just so it blends in a little bit better, but use your hardware and get that attached on both sides. With those in place, we'll now just rotate our steps up. That'll give us access to the rest of the mounting plate there. Just put one fastener in each of the other slots. Now this is a nice solid thick floor. That's why we're able to go directly down into it. If you have a thinner floor, if you have laminate flooring, there's a backer plate. You can use the provided screws or bolts to go all the way through to that backing plate and put a nut on the backside. Now that we've got our base mounted, we'll just extend out our side plates so where they engage the door properly. We've got three bolts here that we're going to loosen. We're going to use a 7/16 to do that. You see we've just allowed those to slide out to where they engage the frame. We don't want them right up against it, so leave a little bit of a gap there. We'll just get these tightened back down. Do that same thing on the other side and our steps will be ready for use. Now, At this point, we just want to operate the steps. We want to make sure we don't have any interference and nothing runs into anything. So we'll move our lever over. That allows them to come down. Move them back up, make sure they work nice and smooth. Lock in both sides really well there. Now we'll bring it back out. We can replace those two black caps that we pulled out. It'll give us a nice clean appearance.Overall when working with customers, I've heard nothing but good about these steps. They install very quickly and easily. It doesn't take a whole lot of time to get them in, and they can really make your life so much easier. Getting in and out with a nice solid platform like this gives you the peace of mind knowing that you're not going to have to worry about slipping off or anything like that. This is definitely an upgrade that I highly recommend and I think you'll enjoy.

Excellent product shipping was slow but expected in the current climate. Super easy to setup and install. Took longer to get the factory steps off than to install this product. Super sturdy and easy to adjust for height. Would recommend Solid Step and Etrailer.com to anyone with an older camper or trailer. 803774

Received the product in a very timely manner, but the Box was open and the screws were just laying on top not secured. Have not installed the steps on the camper, but looks like nice quality step. 774118

I am very happy with the steps for my trailer. I installed them today and it was very easily done. Great quality !!! So now when I step into my trailer I don't feel the squishy sensation and my trailer doesn't shake. The new steps did exactly what I wanted them to do. Thank you for having great quality products. 727473

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

I just install the Lippert four step fold in ladder on to my 2013 Keystone Raptor. The reason for installing the new steps was, the old crappy pullout stairs broke on my wife without any warning. This caused the stairs to collapse, and she fell to the ground. No one would ever expect to have stairs break on them. The new four step Lippert solid step are extremely solid, and built very well. The videos on you tube are very true about these steps. They took about an hour to put in including removal of the old crappy steps. They are very easy to line up and adjust, and are very secure when the entry door is closed. The top step and a half that Lippert uses is very nice, which make it easier exiting the RV. Great product the Solid Step From Lippert and would highly recommend. Be careful to check your old folding steps mine broke near the inside frame where the arm assembly connects. 694073

Great product. Big improvement over standard steps on our Jayco 5th wheel. Hunting the back hole for the adjustment legs each time is only negative. Improve that and perfect. 615302

Love my RV step! We had to extensively modify the step to meet the width restrictions and slideout configuration incurred with my Coachman Concord RV, but the time and money spent have all proven worthwhile. The original electric step had resulted in different step heights, including one 11" stretch. Now entry is easy and much safer. Thanks! 620035

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

This is by far the BEST upgrade to our RV I have done. The steps are more sturdy, they are wider and the angle is not as steep as the original flimsy folding steps that came on the RV. It makes entering and exiting much easier for both my wife with mobility issues and me with 50+ year old knees. Installation was very easy. I did it myself in less than a half hour. In fact, it took longer to remove the old steps (which did not have to be done) than it did to install these new Solid Step. One you install the new Lippert Solid Step, I recommend removing the old folding steps and installing a box there for extra storage. 525526

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

I am not sure how to rate this, the stairs themselves look to be of good quality. However, this appears to be a former demonstration unit. There are dirty footprints on the treads, some of the non-skid strips are coming off and the unit is heavily scratched in several places. I also reseaved half of the correct mounting screws and bolts. The remainder was made up of sheet metal screws. I will make this work, my wife has difficulty with our current stairs so I wish to install this regradless of the stated issues, i just wished it was all there and in better shape 583162

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

First let me say that dealing with the folks at etrailer.com is excellent! They are very helpful, friendly, and more than willing to help. If not for the following issues I would have rated five stars. Now for the steps, box was destroyed, holes all over it, large cardboard patches had been stapled over the largest holes and I had no problem getting into the box. After cutting a few pieces of packing tape the box practically fell apart. Both pins to secure the legs were missing but one phone call to etrailer and replacement pins were mailed out. Both sides of the bottom step frame were bent but I can bend them back in place. Fortunately the damage is at the bottom and not very noticeable. Installation was easy and took about an hour and only because I had to file down part of the campers threshold. Steps are solid and the wife says its the best upgrade we have done to the camper. 644324

Installations instructions provided with the product are really bad! But the ones on the online install video are pretty good!! The product is good, but the pins to adjust the legs are hard to pull out, they should have a key ring or something to help pull out. They also should be attach with a line yard or something. It’s a bit expensive but way better then regular RV stairs on the market. 663530

I received the Lippert Solid Steps today and my son helped me install them. It took about 30 minutes to install and be done. When I ordered the steps, the ad stated it did not come with the mounting screws, but in fact it did come with everything needed. I wish it had a instruction sheet, but I watched the videos online with no issues. I would highly recommend these Lippert Solid Steps to anyone wanting a stable non spongy type of steps that are very well made. 524709

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

Package arrived within a week and all was well though Lippert should consider nylon banding instead of clear tape as UPS had to add yards more to keep everything together. I installed the steps in about 15 minutes with the supplied screws. They are sooooo much betterand stronger then the springboard Keystone Montana supplied as OEM. My wife is particularly pleased with the 1-1/2 wider top step. They are pretty heavy though but that's the price you pay sometimes. Another Lippert item - the supplied hex drive screws would be much better if they were conventional round head, Phillips and stronger/heavier #12x1-1/2 which I'm using, replacing the originals. A consideration - if you are using a Camco screen guard as we are, it will need modification to clear the latches vs the vague answer etrailer sent 438639

Outstanding product. I finally received the steps I’ve been trying to get through Amazon for two months. I called and talked to Natalie L at e-trailer, she helped me get the correct steps and I installed them with no issues! And best of all? My wife loves them, so much better than the springboard steps that are standard on most trailers! Nice solid entry steps! 491939

Easy to install if you use your common sense as the installation instructions are vague. Love the service and assistance from trailer. This is a must have product when you raise your 5th wheel up 4 inches. Makes getting in and out of the camper a lot easier due to the fact that the wife and I are getting old. 721792

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

Ordered for a Flagstaff 29KSWS. The stairs are solid and well made. Much better than the factory pullout. The wide top step makes it much easier to step in and out of the door. I am less concerned about my wife carrying things up and down the stairs, now. I used the door width printed on the door sticker (30") to order and it fit as it should. The first order arrived in three days, but was damaged in shipment. I called etrailer.com and they sent another immediately, absolutely no problem. I dry fitted it in the door with two screws per the directions. The screen door would not close, so I used my Dremel and oscillating saw to cut the vertical lip off the threshold. The screen closed tight, but fine. The sweep on the bottom of the door will adjust to the tighter fit. I then cut the ends off the threshold sweep and put on either side of the stairs. All the metal is aluminum, so the cuts are easy. I used the backer plate and long bolts that comes with the stairs to ensure a solid fit. I took my time and watched the etrailer videos on how to install the stairs. A hand brush by the door to sweep them off before closing them takes care of the dirt problem. 633834

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

I read a lot of reviews before I made this purchase. When the stairs arrived, the box was damaged like others I'd read about. I inspected the stairs and found some minor damage to them. I was able to straighten out the damage and I'll touch up the paint damage later. Installation was straight forward after watching a couple of install videos. I installed these myself and I was able to get all the screws in along with the nuts and bolts. I did go to the hardware store and buy some shorter screws rather than cutting screws while lying under the RV. The stairs are very solid and having a wider top step makes going in and out of the RV easier and safer. I've ordered some LED step lights that I will install on the steps for nighttime use. We had a single light under our original steps so I'm going to install a marine cigarette lighter on the apron of the RV. Then I'll install a plug on the steps so when we park, we drop the steps and plug them into the lighter socket. When we put the steps away, we'll unplug the lights and stow the plug inside the coach with the steps. 649946
