Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

SolidStep Door Flanges

The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.

SolidStep Door Flanges

Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - and round up to the nearest even number to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 24" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

SolidStep Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays doorway width measurements in the first column. If you determined you have an entry height between 22" and 28", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the second column. If you determined your entry height is between 27" and 36", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the third column. If you determined your entry height is between 35" and 44", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the fourth column. Choose the doorway width that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

  2. Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
  3. Extend until feet touch the ground
  4. Center the steps in the doorframe
  5. Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
  6. Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor

-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten

  7. Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages

-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust

Excellent product shipping was slow but expected in the current climate. Super easy to setup and install. Took longer to get the factory steps off than to install this product. Super sturdy and easy to adjust for height. Would recommend Solid Step and Etrailer.com to anyone with an older camper or trailer.

Well step showed up with a little damage due to ruff shipping handling. box was tore up, feet hanging out. turned out missing hardware also. I think these should be packaged better! etrailer. was great and gave some credit back for dents and hardware. The The main door closes fine with step out ,but I had trim quite a bit off the bottom of the screen door to get it to work as others have posted. So make bottom of door clearances part of your consideration when buying. The install of step is easy and very basic other than screen door bottom clearance. The top step is huge and the steps are rock solid. I am very happy with steps just plan on maybe some door modifications before you order them

Positives: This was a simple installation. The hardest part was removing the old steps-took 2 of us (and a few grunts!). I filed off the inner lip on the threshold and removed the transition strip to make things as level as possible prior to installation. It took about 3/4 hour to finish install after that. Great product, (first in-field use will be Thursday 10/8/20). Negatives: The shipping carton was trashed and loose parts were strewn throughout. I didn't receive the 4" #10 machine screws, washers, and lock nuts, so I used the wood screws but I'm pretty sure I'll need to through bolt the assembly to the trailer in the future. LCI - replacements please? Also, ordered clevis pins with bimini rings for easier support strut length adjustment. Overall: Very Positive Upgrade-Easy & Useful. I would recommend to anyone who wants a better steps than the OEM.

I purchased these steps to allow my wife who has had both hips replaced an easier time getting in and out of our RV. I modified the steps to create a 5 inch rise on each step. It has worked out great for her. (and me too). It would be great of you could offer a product that already had 5 inch rise steps. There are a lot of folks like us that would like them

Hey Carol, Thanks for checking in. Got the stairs today and immediately started install. The best steps ever. Can't say enough about etrailer customer support. Sorry about the pics. I was so anxious to get the install going I never thought about install photos, so only have the final product, which is amazing. Thank you all for the great support and another great product.

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

Stairs were installed in a 2018 Forest River Work & Play. The original 2-step stairs caused issues with my knees due to the excessive riser height. The new stairs riser height is 8 inches. Installation of the stairs itself was quick and easy with my wife assisting while I drilled the mounting holes in the floor. Installation took less than 30 minutes. One issue that I encountered was that the screen door was scraping along the sheetmetal threshold of the SolidStep, preventing the RV door from closing while the steps were in the down position. The fix was that I cut approx 1/4 inch of the vertical rails of the screen door and re-assembled the screen door. Door closes without binding now.

Very happy with the SolidStep. Easy to install, only had to adjust the screen door for proper fit but expected that. The large top step is a fantastic feature, and travel adjustment is simple. Recommendation: Using the SolidStep fit guide, I would recommend going w/ steps that are more in the middle range of your door to ground measurement for step choice. I wish I had gone w/ the 3 step rather than the 4 as a level parking spot is essential to getting the steps at the correct height for proper door closure. A side note, the customer service provided is some of the best I've had to deal with. Not only would I purchase SolidStep again, eTrailer is my choice for trailer and truck towing add-ons.

I whish l had bought these steps a year ago. Closing inside trailer is the best way to protect them from the elements. My new steel steps rusted out in less than a year. These steps are well built and very stable when you enter. My wife really likes the extra dept in top step.

This is by far the BEST upgrade to our RV I have done. The steps are more sturdy, they are wider and the angle is not as steep as the original flimsy folding steps that came on the RV. It makes entering and exiting much easier for both my wife with mobility issues and me with 50+ year old knees. Installation was very easy. I did it myself in less than a half hour. In fact, it took longer to remove the old steps (which did not have to be done) than it did to install these new Solid Step. One you install the new Lippert Solid Step, I recommend removing the old folding steps and installing a box there for extra storage.

Easy installation and a great product. I used the backer plate and thru bolts for mounting instead of screws. The only issue I had was that the locking pins for the leg extensions were not easy to remove. I replaced them a standard pins with retaining clips.

First let me say that dealing with the folks at etrailer.com is excellent! They are very helpful, friendly, and more than willing to help. If not for the following issues I would have rated five stars. Now for the steps, box was destroyed, holes all over it, large cardboard patches had been stapled over the largest holes and I had no problem getting into the box. After cutting a few pieces of packing tape the box practically fell apart. Both pins to secure the legs were missing but one phone call to etrailer and replacement pins were mailed out. Both sides of the bottom step frame were bent but I can bend them back in place. Fortunately the damage is at the bottom and not very noticeable. Installation was easy and took about an hour and only because I had to file down part of the campers threshold. Steps are solid and the wife says its the best upgrade we have done to the camper.

Outstanding product. I finally received the steps I’ve been trying to get through Amazon for two months. I called and talked to Natalie L at e-trailer, she helped me get the correct steps and I installed them with no issues! And best of all? My wife loves them, so much better than the springboard steps that are standard on most trailers! Nice solid entry steps!

The Solid Steps fit my clear opening of 24 1/2” almost perfectly. I adjusted the latches a little and for my application it was like the stairs were custom made for my RV. Very happy to upgrade with this safety feature.

Great steps. We have a 34 foot Montana and got the 3 step model, I think they recommended the 4 step model but these are lighter to lift and shorter in the doorway. The egress and ingress might be a little steeper but we are very happy. Easy to install the screen door had to be adjusted a little bit to shut properly. Very good quality, I would do this again. They came fast and the customer service was not needed so I cant speak to that.

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

Ordered for a Flagstaff 29KSWS. The stairs are solid and well made. Much better than the factory pullout. The wide top step makes it much easier to step in and out of the door. I am less concerned about my wife carrying things up and down the stairs, now. I used the door width printed on the door sticker (30") to order and it fit as it should. The first order arrived in three days, but was damaged in shipment. I called etrailer.com and they sent another immediately, absolutely no problem. I dry fitted it in the door with two screws per the directions. The screen door would not close, so I used my Dremel and oscillating saw to cut the vertical lip off the threshold. The screen closed tight, but fine. The sweep on the bottom of the door will adjust to the tighter fit. I then cut the ends off the threshold sweep and put on either side of the stairs. All the metal is aluminum, so the cuts are easy. I used the backer plate and long bolts that comes with the stairs to ensure a solid fit. I took my time and watched the etrailer videos on how to install the stairs. A hand brush by the door to sweep them off before closing them takes care of the dirt problem.

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

4 stars or 5? When I first saw these step I knew these were a great thing. I spent 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, I have run and hiked many miles with a 120 lbs pack so my knees are now shot. I saw a video were someone said the old fold out steps hurt his knees and these step got rid of the pain, so this I wanted to try. I looked inside my door frame and saw the door was a Lippert and the measurement was 26"hurray! I ordered them right away. When I got them I was disappointed that they did not fit. My doorway was actually 24" inside measurement not 26" like the label states. The steps fit in the door, just the latch bar was 2"s to long. I called Lippert, figured they could send me a shorter latch bar. The lady was very nice, but explained I received the smallest one they make, she said I could send them back. I told her no I want them and will make them work! I took the latch bar off and took them to a welder. They charge me $60 to cut the bar down, weld it and powder coat it. The rest is history see for you self they are awesome. And yes they make a difference to my knees! 4 stars only because Lippert did not realize these will work in the smaller doorway.

Love the steps, I'm 82 and these steps makes it so much easier for me to get in and out of my camper. The only problem was it took sets, since I had to return the first ones because the box was torn open and the installation hardware was missing. erailer was all over it and the second set right away.

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

The product itself is great and we really like the new steps. My only complaint is there was no instructions at all in the box. It was not hard to figure out, but I did not realize until I had installed it, there were 2 holes in the top, so a person could screw it down while the steps were down. I lifted the steps to put the screws in, and of course the steps moved and I had to reset the screws. But all in all, we are really happy with the steps. They are a huge improvement and much safer than the ones that came on the unit. I would have given 5 stars if there had been instructions.

Great. They are much more solid than the old ones. We keep a broom handy so we can clean them off before lifting them back in.

Delivery was quick Install was easy (40 min) Only drawback was the packaging. Because of the packaging, the legs had poked a hole through the box, and a couple of the nuts were lost. Perhaps an extra pad of cardboard on the bottom of the feet when shipping would reduce this issue.

The first one delivered with out hardware but I got one to small and had it returned with great help in doing it. Got the right one today and it is rock solid and easy to install but my door will not open all the way because of the awaking brackets so I will have to loosen the right side bolts everything I want to put the steps down but it will be worth it due to the stability of the RV now that we have the steps...

Even though these steps are meant to be used in a conventional travel trailer, I installed them in a 1994 Fleetwood Southwind Class A motor home. I had to get creative to position them so the door would function properly, but it was worth the effort. They are great!!! The original electric steps stopped working properly long ago. I had replaced them with manually operated steps, but was never happy with them. These steps are fantastic, relatively simple to use, very stable and my wife loves them. What else can I say? They solved an eight year old problem. Thank you

Review from a similar SolidStep in RV and Camper Steps

Long story short this was the 4th attempt at getting these steps but first 3 were via Amazon. First set were too long. The 4 step model for my camper were too long. Measurements really need to be questioned. I was "inbetween" and it was recommended to go with the 4 step model. Wrong recommendation. 3 step was needed for a perfect fit. Sent those back and then Amazon proceeded to ship me the 26" wide vs the 30" TWICE. In fact the second time it was the SAME BOX I sent back a few days earlier. So, I found the model needed on etrailer for same price. Everything installed as expected HOWEVER, I had to loosen up the bolts for the foot pad and the right leg extension because they just wouldn't move. ALSO, the box did not contain the underfloor mounting bracket needed(if you didn't have a solid wood floor). So that tells me I received a "sent back" unit from another customer. This was also evident by the way the box was taped up and the condition of the box. However, overall the steps are now installed and look great. Slight modification needed on screen door to get it to close but otherwise a great upgrade for the rv. 4 stars because of prompt delivery. Not 5 stars because of "assumption" that it was a returned from another customer item.

As you can see in the linked video, the install is very simple and the steps are the most solid option available for secure footing when entering and exiting your travel trailer. The steps themselves have an 8 inch rise and are designed for a 27 to 36 inch entry height. If your entry height is 22 to 28...

  • Large Steps for Trailer with 21-3/4" Entry Height
The MORryde # MR73RR is a quick connect step (not fold in) for 21-1/2" entry height and 23-1/2" entry width. Because they rest on the ground they provide a solid footing for steps that don't flex and dramatically reduce trailer roll from users on steps. If you prefer the quick convenience of fold in steps you should consider the Lippert # LC713662 for entry heights as low as 22" off the ground, and door entry width of 24". If your door is wider there are other sizes. Just email me if...

These can either be welded or bolted onto your trailer frame, and they should be relatively easy to install.
