Lippert 6891 Dims Part 2

Lippert 6891 Dims Part 2 (3)

Kwikee electric RV entry steps provide an effortless, convenient way to enter and exit your RV. The steps are wired to your RV's door and feature an automatic extension, unfolding when the door opens and retracting when it closes. This differentiates the steps from the alternate manual pull-out steps.

Motor, Gearbox, Linkage, and Switch Kit

The updated Kwikee steps manufactured since 1999 require the integrated motor, gearbox, and linkage (IMGL) setup to power the steps. The motor provides the power, the gearbox turns the linkage arm, and the linkage pushes the steps out and pulls them back in when rotated by the gearbox.

The switch kit consists of 2 magnetic sensor pieces that mount to the door and doorframe, and 1 rocker switch. When the sensor pieces come into contact with each other, the steps are pushed in or pulled out. You can override the automatic retraction with the rocker switch. This will lock the steps in the extended position.

The included 4-way plug fits into the existing wiring harness on your RV. Most vehicles should having this wiring already set up. In the event that your RV is missing the wiring, a 4-way pigtail is included to help you hardwire the unit to your RV.

Safety Features

The Kwikee steps include several safety features in an effort to prevent injury to you or your passengers and damage to the RV steps. If an obstruction is detected while extending, the steps will halt and retract back into the stowed position. The steps will also retract when you turn on the vehicles ignition, even if the automatic retraction override has been activated, in case you forget to stow them before driving away.

Will Kwikee Electric Steps Work for You?

Electric steps are typically installed on RVs and some travel trailers. The electric steps from Kwikee install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Kwikee In and Out

The Kwikee electric steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 25-3/4" wide and 14-3/4" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes available ranging from 24-1/2" wide to 36-3/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Kwikee Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 6" to 8" to account for the drop from the bottom step to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket widths in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

Review from a similar Kwikee 40 Series in RV and Camper Steps

Etrailer was easy to shop online, great price and fast shipping I ordered my kwikee step on Sunday and it was at my house on Tuesday. The installation was easy remove and replace using a small jack to hold the step in position. I did have an issue with the wire going to the motor, the retainer clip somehow was broken on arrival and would not hold the connector to the motor but a zip tie took care of that problem. The steps did not come with new magnetic switch so will have to order one separately the one on my rv was not working. Overall great shopping experience. Will shop here in the future. 851766

Bolt-on replacement. Some splicing required, mostly because whoever installed the last one added some unnecessary lights. A challenge to lift into place, but I used a hydraulic auto jack to assist. Only problem, the high current shutoff feature (when current increases, the control system shuts off the motor because increased current should mean the step reached the end of its travel) stops the steps prematurely. I'm hoping that as the steps wear in, this will stop happening. Until then, I need to provide a slight force upward when the steps retract to get them all the way up. 819159

  • Troubleshooting Powered Steps on a 2008 Holiday Rambler that will Not Fully Extend or Retract
We don't carry the SCS/Frigette brand of steps so it's a little hard for me to troubleshoot the problem you are experiencing, but it sounds like the gears of the steps are jamming up which is preventing the steps from moving more than just a little bit. What I would recommend you do is get underneath it and inspect the gear assemblies to be sure there isn't anything stuck in the gears or that the gears themselves have been damaged. You might also check the condition of the wiring. A...

  • Recommended Heavy Duty Replacement for Kwikee Series Steps
If weight capacity is the primary concern then you will want to take a look at the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps as there is not a heavy duty version of the Kwikee Series Steps. The Kwikee Series are almost all rated at 300 lbs whereas the SolidStep is rated at 400 lbs. This will be the best replacement for your Kwikee Series as they install in an odd fashion that most other manufacturers do not make replacements for.
