Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?
Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.
The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 24" wide and 1" tall.
If it turns out you have less space beneath your doorway, there are smaller step assemblies available with 18-1/4" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.
Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.
How Many Steps Do You Need?
To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.
The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.
This page's step assembly is in bold text.
Entry Height | 18-1/4" Mounting Bracket Width | 24" Mounting Bracket Width |
---|---|---|

How Do You Install the Steps?
To install the steps:
-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway
-Secure in place with included lag screws

8-1/2" Deep x 24" wide aluminum camper steps expand from 24" to 30" tall and fold up for storage. Steps self-adjust for stability on any terrain. Non-slip tread ensures solid footing. Mounting bracket and hardware included.I could not find a product specifically made for my application, but these steps were a very close fit. I little cutting here some drilling there and what do you know, steps 'custom made' for a 1999 Roadtrek 190P. Now anyone with mobility issues can enter the camper easily. You cannot see it in the picture, but there are blocks under the top step that are pinned to the campers step, it is a very solid connection and will not pull out accidentally. Also not visible there are commercial handicapped grab bars on both doors as well as on the left hand 'wall' of the bathroom. With the addition of these steps the camper is now easily accessible for my wife.
I would give these steps 10 Stars if I could. They have really saved my knees over my previous step system. I also really like the wider and deeper steps. When I was younger I had the smaller brophy steps. But my older knees really like the bigger steps now, and for me the extra cost was really worth it.
The Brophy Scissor Steps are excellent -- sturdy and stable when deployed, light and compact when collapsed. On my Four Wheel Camper, there was not enough room to install the mounting bracket/hanger below the door. So I bolted a piece of 4x4 just above the rear bumper. Then I used the provided lag screws to attach the bracket to the 4x4. Looks and works great.
I bought these steps because my wife had trouble getting into our 4wd pop up camper. The door is at the rear of the camper, mounted on a Ford F-150. I myself did not want the steps because I thought they would add weight, bulk while traveling, and hassle. I was unable to use the mounting bracket supplied. If I were to mount the bracket to the back of the camper, it would be too high, and also leave a gap between the camper and the top step. I solved the problem by mounting a flat aluminum step across the bumper, and then on top of that bolting on two plywood boards with a gap just big enough to take the top aluminum bar of the steps. The steps fit onto this perfectly. In use, I now like these steps a lot. They are VERY solid and secure - much more than any other option, such as the plastic folding stepstool I used before. Since the steps are securely attached to the truck, and also resting securely on the ground, it makes for a VERY stable and secure step. When traveling it is very easy to fold them up and put them into the back of the camper. They are the first thing unpacked, and the last thing packed. Yet it does add weight and takes up room, but in my opinion it is well worth it.
Easy to install and have been using regularly for about one year. e-trailer was easy to work with and we are very glad we purchased. Had to replace the pins at the bottom step with a nut/ bolt to prevent steps from opening too far. The original pins kept falling out until they were finally lost.
I have been using this trailer step for over a year. It is fabulous. I decided on this model because the stairs are deeper making it easier and safer for myself, family members as well as my old dog to get in and out of the camper. I am able to use my single folding step during travel, placing the scissor step on without conflict. I highly recommend the step to anyone who has a camper.
steps worked great for the 400 square feet not-so-tiny portable house being built. light but very sturdy and easy to install. after the deck boards are installed the gap at the top will be covered. speedy delivery at a fair price. I highly recommend them. etrailer is definitely one of my go to internet sites. reasonable prices, fast delivery and good selections, with good customer support. thanks etrailer !!!
Great product and easy to mount. The larger size step is great for my pyrenees dogs to enter and exit my four wheel pop up hawk camper. Wasn’t sure the 3 step was going to be tall enough, but seems to be working so far. Was trying to avoid the 4 step version because of extra size and weight. The package only comes with 4 bolts and the mounting bracket has five holes so i picked up 1 more 1/4”x1 1/2”x 14 sheet metal screw for extra security. Get one of these , so much nicer than a hitch mount step or fold up step.
Purchased these to use on our Jumping Jack Blackout Trailer. Didn't want to drill directly into the trailer, so my Husband devised a creative way to use it. Will be using it camping this weekend for the first time. So far love the extra room of the 24". They feel sturdy & it feels natural (It's nice to not have to think about how or where you are placing your feet) walking on them- like real stairs...
I appreciated the good technical information on this product.I was in a hurry to replace the factory installed steps on my older wood framed camper so we could put it to use this year.We stopped using the old steps some time ago but had no practical replacement for them. My wife ,who began experiencing knee problems, gave me an ultimatum to either fix the stairs or go buy a new trailer or our camping days would be over. This style worked very well. I had a local fabricator weld the top support bracket to the existing step housing for the old stairs as can be seen in the photos. The top support design puts very little stress on the camper's wood frame that the old steps are anchored to. Looks good and works well. Thanks folks
I like these steps. I modified them slightly for my purposes. I removed the lower bar with a sawzall to shorten the steps slightly. Still seems very steady without the bar. This made the steps a perfect height for my custom trailer. They close up nicely and I can keep them attached even while driving since they fit under the door. I made some safety straps to make sure they would not unzip (probably overkill); there is already a metal clip in the back which does already hold the steps.
I have a non-standard use, I've attached these to my shed with a floor 30 inches above ground. I love how easy the stairs are to put on & take off. I stow them in the shed and pull them out when needed for access. The width and sturdiness of these steps are excellent.
Very well made product. Going in and out of the camper is much more secure, my old ladder was OK when I was younger but was wobbly. I had to make a 2" x 2" angle aluminum mount to lower the steps to clear the door opening.
Quick delivery appears as ordered. In process of attaching to our motor home and will review again with photos. We are building a platform with a hand rail to attach steps to. Again will send photos. The steps are exactly what we were looking for.
Perfect steps for the back entrance to our short bus. The bracket was easily installed and the steps are very sturdy. Ordering was easy and they arrived quickly!
Purchased these because my wife had an issue with her knee and couldn’t climb into my truck camper. These were Excellent use of my money and saved my camping season in 2018.
Works well except the landing wants to be only on level ground. I had to modify it with angle alum to strengthen the bottom and added threaded rods welded to plates so it can be adjustable.
I bought this for stairs to my tailgate and bought the special bar for hookup to the tailgate. The aluminum will bend on the top and the bottom if you are on uneven ground. Steps are sturdy but the top connection worries me.
We purchased a Brophy 3-step scissor stair unit...but needed the 4 - step. Katie made the the whole thing seem less...new all the right answers and how to make it right. As a Canadian ...I can't stress the importance of getting what you need the first time. Don't guess the math...its costly to return. Although Katie helped me undue my mistake and made good the exchange on my return. It's the return shipping that'll cost ya in the end not to mention the exchange on the dollar. Overall the scissor stairs are amazing. We just recently made a trip to PEI and Nova Scotia and a few campers commented on our Brophy stair system and how good they look. And they are a solid product too. Thanks Katie for all your help.
We were excited to find wide 3-step scissor steps to use on our truck camper. The width would allow us to put a dog ramp along one side and still have room for our feet. Unfortunately, the steps are just too tall so we had to return them. Our camper has a side door entry and the bracket is only 22" from the ground. We couldn't open the steps far enough to get the steps level or to be able to close the door. They seemed to be really well made and a quality product!
Came in a timely manner and was as expe cted.
Came within 2 days. Did not expect the solid nature of the top step. Seen others without the top step being like the rest of them. Will use on slide in camper. Width is great. Have not had chance to attach yet.
Sturdy and easy to install on the bumper of my Arctic Fox truck camper. The 3 steps are right for the height of my camper when loaded onto truck. I would have given it 5 stars except for the gap between the last step an bumper. As I read in another post, if one fell into the gap and fell, I feel that a serious injury could occur. I cured that problem by filling the gap with and appropriate size of wood block placed on the top folding camper step.
My 2003 Lance 815 (8' 6") came with four 3/8 " diameter studs for mounting stairs below the door and pointed downward. (I contacted Lance about purchasing "bolt-on" steps, but received no response.) I then purchased an aluminum angle brace and drilled to fit the step mounting bracket. Then I drilled the aluminum angle brace to fit the four existing mounting studs. The resulting mounting bracket is about 1" below the door, and the step work very well for a ground clearance of 30 inches. My one issue is where to store the steps when traveling.
