Video Transcript for Curt RV Bumper 2 inch Trailer Hitch Review

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the Curt 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening, made to fit on the back side of your campers. Now this is going to add a lot of versatility to your camper. As you can see, we've added an RV approved bike rack, but also RV approved cargo carriers are something you can stick back there. It offers a 350 lb tongue weight rating and a 3500 lb gross trailer weight rating, so even small utility trailers, small boats, things like that, are something we can add on here to the back to get them down the road with us safely. Now these are available in two different configurations. The one we're using here is for the four inch by four inch bumper beam. But these are also available for the two inch by four inch bumper beams.

So just be sure you get the right part number.Installation's really quite simple, just slide it up around your bumper. Place in your two carriage bolts, and secure those down. Really quick and easy way to add, like we said before, a lot of utility to your trailer, and get your stuff where you need it.You can see our pin hole here, this is gonna be 5/8 of and inch in diameter, it's gonna use a standard class three pin and clip, and we can also thread in anti-rattle devices, you can see the bike rack here, anti-rattle device there. It's a little bit tight to get in there, you can see how your pin has a little bit of interference, but overall it's gonna be something that's nice and easy to use.The two inch by two inch receiver tube opening is gonna make it compatible with just about any type of class three accessory. Do keep in mind though, your cargo carriers and bike racks, you wanna be sure those are RV approved.

Which generally means they don't have a tilting or a folding function. Now these RV hitches from Curt are really some of the most popular ones that we sell. I think especially with this one, the four inch by four inch version, with that higher tongue weight and gross trailer weight capacity than what we see out of some of the other ones, this is gonna lend itself towards that trailering for sure.A lot of the other ones, or at least some of the other ones that are on offer are gonna be limited to just bike racks or just cargo carriers. Not really rated for towing. So if towing is something you're looking for, this is gonna be an excellent choice. But also to add some more storage space back here with cargo carriers or with bike racks, it's gonna come in really handy. Now a couple of measurements that'll be helpful for you, just to ensure that this is gonna work out properly for your application. From the bottom of our bumper to the bottom of our hitch, it's about 2 3/4 of an inch, so our ground clearance in the rear will be lowered by that.

Then from the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of our bumper, it's about 3/4 of and inch all the way to the end of the receiver tube, we're looking at about 2 1/4.Now this hitch does not have a weight distribution rating, so with that being said, Curt does recommend the use of a stabilization strap anytime we're using something that would be considered a non-wheeled load. Something like a bike rack, cargo carrier or something other than a trailer. To begin our installation process, we're gonna take our hitch, and we're also gonna find the center point of the rear bumper of our RV here. Or our camper trailer.Once we've found that we want to slide the Curt hitch up. It's gonna be a snug fit. So we're gonna use our dead blow to get it in place.

Once that's up in position, we just want to ensure that the center point of the hitch is lined up to the center point of our bumper. We can slide through our half inch carriage bolts, then we'll put our flange nuts on the backside. And we're gonna snug these up. Once we've got them snug, we'll torque them to the specifications listed in our instructions. We're gonna use a 3/4 inch or 19mm to get the job done. That's gonna complete our look at the Curt line of camper bumper mount hitches.

Torqued to spec. and works as expected. We hang a bike rack off of it on the back of a travel trailer. Solid design. Reason not a 5: There was a slight alignment issue getting the bolts through both sides due to the stampings not being aligned when welded. Once I got the bolts through, no issue, but there was interference with the threads on the stamping; had to turn the bolts through as they would not slip through. Still would recommend. 674835

Ordered my part/RV Trailer Hitch on a weekend/Saturday, & someone got back to me on the very next day/Sunday; I was surprised & happy to hear that it had already been shipped out and was enroute to my home-very impressive (2nd time I have used this company). Thanks again! 212737

If you order one make sure your camper bumper IS EXACTLY four inches square I had to do a lot of filing and grinding to make it fit. When they say four inches they mean EXACTLY FOUR INCHES MAYBE A SMIDGE LESS but it is very heavy duty and will do the job 82429

This hitch is a beast, it's built very solid. The 2 bolts to install it make it a lot easier to install it like some of the other models that have 4 bolts. I put it on the back of my camper so I could use a 2in receiver style bike rack. It works great, Curt definitely builds things to last. 544404

Heavy duty! Had to use a rubber mallet to seat it properly on the 4"×4" back bumper on my travel trailer. Should be perfect to carry my new 4 bike rack down the road! As always, etrailer's customer service is second-to-none! 527798

Awesome product. I did have one problem with it but it was on my end. The bumper on my Keystone Summerland Series Mini was a little to close to the body so I had to flip the mount over to make the bolts work. Shipping was fast!!!! 4 days including the day I ordered. Would have been 3 but something happened with UPS. I will definitely be buying more products from etrailer Corporation. 458672

Still holding up great a year later. It easily allows me to carry my cargo receiver which has my generator and a couple five gallon gas cans on the back.

I ordered the bumper hitch for my recently purchased camper so I could carry my bikes when heading out for some great outdoor activities. Unfortunately, despite my best effort I ordered the wrong size hitch and had to return it. The folks at etrailer were very supportive and provided me with the UPS shipping label so i could return the product. And, I received a nice email from Donna offering assistance and a link to the correct hitch which I should have ordered in the first place. I received the hitch as promised and it is of high quality and appears extremely easy to install. I have yet to use it but believe it will more than do the trick and support carrying my bikes around on the bumper of the camper. My experience with the folks at the company, both via email and on the phone was exceptional and I am confident the hitch will follow suit. 420698

As I had hoped and surmised, the hitch works like a charm. I can and have carried bikes on the back of my camper via the hitch and am very pleased with the product.

We were pleasantly surprised when we received our ETRAILER hitch. The quality was beyond our expectation. It is so heavy duty and rugged. All of the hardware that is included is also very rugged. We do not have any pictures to share just yet because our fifth wheel camper has not been delivered just yet and it’s going on the bumper to tow a utility trailer that will haul two dirt bikes. We will post an update review when we get it installed but I can tell you that this product is going to put perform our expectations and make the task of towing the trailer super simple. Thanks ETRAILER! 552811

by:

It's very well made and sturdy looking. However, reason for my 4 star rather than 5 is that the bolt that came with is not a security bolt so anyone carrying a simple wrench can remove the bolt from the bumper and take the valuables very easily. Now thinking of replacing those bolts with security bolts with similar strength is a pain. 540619

This product is AWESOME! I needed a 2" receiver for a bike rack for my RV, I wasn't even sure such a product existed, and found this and it's great. Fit is perfect for a 4" bumper. I had to modify it a tad for upper clearance but that was just for my particular application and was no biggie. This product is really well built. And the service from etrailer is top notch as usual! 101388

This product is great, no problems with it. Works as advertised and easy to install. Just be careful, The back bumper tube on my RV was not substantial enough to use this mount with a cargo carrier. Just the short trip from storage to the house with a light item in the carrier was enough to show me the tube was twisting badly. It wouldn't last many miles down the road before it would have had a come apart. Make sure what you intend to mount it to will handle what you plan to use this for. I ended up just using it for an extra spare tire carrier while traveling and a deer winch while stationary. 429482

As a returning customer, I am glad George was on his game. He prevented me from ordering the wrong part. He knew all about it, like he uses the products that he sells. He could tell that I was not sure, so he says "ED, this will fit your vehicle, I know ". Hearing the confidence in his voice, I said "order it". The order came in 4 days. It was the right size, the right color and all the right parts. My grand son and I installed it quick and easy. Grandma loves it. ( if Grandma is happy, everybody is happy ). George, remember this : The most important person in the company is .. the employee. If the company takes care of the employee, the employee will take care of the customer. 314400

Great hitch & easy to install. experience w/ Etrailer & Nicole in particular was fantastic & I will absolutely make future purchase here. If Nicole was closer to my area, I would offer a job in a heartbeat! Many people sell the same products so the difference is service and I have no doubt etrailer has a good training program but she has a natural gift & care to go the extra step to make everything to smooth-very, very impressed. As for the Swagman bike rack- I like the rack & seems very sturdy in construction but it is a loose fit in the receiver. a fastener clamp/tightener should be recommended or added. I had one from a cargo carrier and used that to tighten up the "play" in the receiver area. I could see this being frustrating for anyone that didn't happen to have this part laying around their garage. Delivery was perfect & I plan to load up the rack this weekend. Thanks!! 44982

by:

Product was just as described, and arrived in 3 days of placing order. It took about 10 minutes to mount and most of that was moving the spare tire mount over to the side so the receiver could be mounted in the middle if the bumper. It's very sturdy, plan on towing my flat bottom aluminum boat with it. Very satisfied. 325720

I bought this for a 4x4 bumper on my new trailer. I could not get the hitch on all the way. I think it was welded crooked. It was very tight but I got the left side to be completely seated but I could not get the right side in place to be able to install the bolt. It scratched my new bumper so I gave up and I am returning it for another style. 419682

by:

The Curt 2” RV E-100 Hitch was received quickly and in good condition complete with all parts. The hitch is heavier than I expected but this is a good thing. I installed this on my used 35' Sabre 5th wheel to replace the OEM rear cargo carrier which did not suit my needs. The installation was easy and as expected. The Sabre bumper has a chrome plate trim piece attached by 2 small screws on either end that covers the top and face of the original black boxed bumper. I knew I had to trim out a piece the width of the bumper plate for the hitch to slide over for mounting and this was done with no surprises. The hitch does fit a four inch RV bumper but remember if ordering that the opened end of the hitch slot plates are flared out at the top for “clamping” action and narrows where the plates are 4 inches wide at the receiver end and there is no “give” there by design. So they may “fit” at the top but will only mount so far down if the bumper is wider than 4". Because of the low height of the Sabre bumper above the road surface, I mounted the hitch with the receiver “up” for more road clearance. I mounted a Rola 3 bike rack into the hitch but had only 2 bikes mounted. The hitch was excellent and I have no advice or comments for the hitch other than if you need a heavy duty add on hitch, buy this one. I did experience problems with the bike rack itself. It has a “Drop Down” feature to lower the bikes for easier removal. Due to the pivot design there's lots of play with the vertical neck of the rack and I needed to brace it better to reduce this play. At the end of a 35 foot RV the whipping action is very pronounced so be advised when using a bike rack that hinges near the hitch. I would highly recommend the E-100 and based on previous orders placed with E-Trailer I would highly recommend them also when ordering any trailer related item. 203781

Comments

It is still doing the job. Thank you for the follow up. If a customer does contact etrailer about the hitch, please be sure to stress the longer the unit the hitch fits on, the more chance of bottoming out because most RV trailers rear bumpers sit fairly low to the ground. Prior to buying the hitch I made sure I had adequate clearance but its still close at times.

Product seems to be very stout and well built. Mounted to my reinforced 4" bumper on 2004 Forest River Rockwood Roo. To clear the spare tire, I ordered an extra long ball mount. With everything mounted, the system seems to be very secure. I will be comfortable towing my boat with this. Etrailer's product descriptions and videos are excellent. 180039

Whathow did you reinforce your bumper? I have one of those flimsy plastic one that Im going to take off and install a 4 steel bumper on with plan to attach a receiver for a bike rack. Thanks!

Aaron, when you are ready for your bike rack, please makes sure that you use a RV/Camper approved bike rack. These bike racks are tested and rated for the additional forces that will be experienced at the back of an RV or camper due to the extended distance from the rear axle. I have provided a link to our current offerings of RV/Camper bike racks for you to check out.

-- Rachael H - 7/17/2015

Comments

Aaron, the bumper had already been reinforced by the previous owner. The 4 steel tubular bumper is welded directly to the frame i-beams, and someone before me had welded a triangular plate to the top of the bumper and ibeam on each side where they meet. Ive towed my 16 BaylinerSingle Axle Trailer about 400 miles now and havent had any problems, and havent noticed any cracks anywhere in the bumper. This setup requires driving a little more slowly, max 65 mph, to prevent trailer sway, but it is a very scure and economical way to tow my units and family with one vehicle.

I selected this receiver bolt-on because it looked heavy duty. I was right. It is thick steel plates with heavy duty bolts. Exceeds my needs, which is what I was going for. I'm attaching a cargo carrier holding approx 130lbs of ramps used to load my RoadKing into the truck that pulls the trailer. This receiver will hold whatever your bumper will.. 391888

The CURT RV Bumper 2” Trailer Hitch Receiver was the perfect solution to our dilema of taking the boat and the camper to the lake with one vehicle. The hitch was easily installed in less than 20 minutes. Taking it out of the box I was immediately impressed with the obvious strength of the hitch from the weight of the steel to the size of the bolts and nuts. The hitch formed to my camper bumper like it was a custom fit. Again all of this provided added assurance that this hitch would more than take care of an additional trailer. 602703

Well made, just be sure your bumper can handle the weight of what ever you hitch to it. A lot of RV Bumper's are only rated for a couple hundred pounds. You may have to have some fabrication done if that's the case. 526166

I purchased this product to go on the back of my camper to primarily hold a bicycle rack. I received it on time and the package was not damaged. The powder coating on the metal appears to be very durable and scratch resistant. My only issue was that the inside spacing was 1/16 inch smaller than 4 inches so it would not slip on my 4 inch square bumper. I was able to open up the clearance by using the bolts that were provided and 2 additional nuts and washers to screw the opening larger to get the plates to yield enough to obtain the spacing needed to slip on the bumper. I think nylok nuts and flat washers instead of the serrated nuts that were provided would be better to secure it in place to prevent potential scratching of the paint. 725057

I have a 21.5' Trail-Lite RV that had a plastic bumper. I wanted to put a Bike Rack on the back of the RV, so I bought some 3/16" 4" x 4" square stock and had a welder weld it on the back of the RV. This is a lot heaver duty than a stock bumper. Once the bumper was installed, I bought this Curt bumper hitch, part E-100, from etrailer.com. Installation was a breeze, and only took a few minutes. I used some grease and a small hydraulic jack to encourage the hitch to slide on. You DO NOT need to drill out the holes as some have reported. A 4 pound sledge will encourage the back hitch hole to pop above the 4" bumper. Use some never seize on the threads so it will come apart some day. Here is the finished product, with my e-bike installed. Shipping was quick and FREE! (I ordered over $100 of stuff) 721033

  • Thanks for the photo! I can now see the issues you are having trying to install a trailer hitch on your 2019 Forest River Rockwood Ultra Lite Fifth Wheel. That said, the brackets for the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13703 and the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13704 are too large to attach to the square tubing used to attach your bumper and this square tubing would get in the way if you tired to mount the hitch to the frame underneath. This hitch fits 4" x 4" square bumpers and while there is technically not a built-in security measure to keep someone from taking the hitch, it does get torqued down tightly to your bumper as you can see in the linked instructions, so it would be quite a bit of work to take it. Additionally, if you were using a bike rack such as the Thule Range 4 Bike RV Rack # TH9057 or...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for RV with 4 x 4 Square Bumper
  • We currently have five bumper mounted 2" trailer hitch receivers that will work with the 4" x 4" bumper on your trailer. I have attached these options for you but I recommend using the Curt RV Bumper 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E-100. This trailer hitch uses steel plates to surround the bumper as opposed to the u-bolts in the other options. The steel plates will provide more support and also look much better than the u-bolt options. If you also need a cargo basket for your generator...

  • What is Purpose of Rear Hitch Installed on 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Trailer makers typically install hitch receivers on their 5th wheel and travel trailers to enable owners to use items like an RV-approved bike rack, such as the Swagman E-Spec 2-Electric Bike Platform Rack # S64689. Not all hitch accessories can be used on trailers or motorhomes but this particular Swagman carrier can be used on ANY vehicle, car, truck, van, pop-up camper, 5th wheel or motorhome. This sturdy rack is unique in this respect. Using a bike rack in the trailer's hitch will...

  • The MaxxTow Cargo Carrier # MT70100 referenced in your question is designed for use with a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. If you don't yet have a hitch receiver on your fifth-wheel trailer, you can add a bumper-mount option like the Curt RV 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-100, which is designed specifically for 4 inch square bumpers like what you have. The receiver has a 350 pound tongue weight capacity and the mounting hardware is included. You will also want to check the capacity...

  • Recommended RV Bumper Hitch to Transport Firewood
  • It sounds like you are referring to the RV Bumper 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver # S64025. This particular bumper hitch is designed to be used with hitch-mounted bike racks and is not recommended for use with a cargo carrier, as the weight that they will provide is simply too much for the unit to handle. A better option for your application will be with the Curt RV Bumper Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-100. This is intended for 4 inch square channel bumpers and can be used with hitch-mounted...

  • What Are the Specs for the Lippert 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver LC730647
  • The Lippert 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver part # LC730647 is specific to Vanleigh 5th Wheel Trailers. If you take a look at the attached photo you will see that there are tabs on this trailer that sit below the frame and the trailer hitch attaches to these. These two tabs are spaced 72" apart so if this is what you have then the Lippert 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver will work but I don't have any sort of spec sheet on this as it is a custom fit trailer hitch. If you don't have a Vanleigh 5th...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for Laredo Trailer with Weld-On Extension
  • Weld-on extensions like what you have with the box frame on your Laredo 342RD are not generally the best place to install a trailer hitch such as the Curt # 13703 that you referenced. Doing this will essentially reduce the hitch to an unknown capacity, as it is designed to attach directly to the frame of the RV. If you do in fact have a 4 inch x 4 inch square channel bumper on the trailer, a better option will be to install the Curt RV Bumper 2 Inch Trailer Hitch # E-100 that you also...

  • Recommended Travel Trailer Hitch Receiver and Cargo Carrier for Gas Generator

Then for a 4,000 watt running generator like the Q-iPower # 289-AP5000 which weighs 117 lbs and has dimensions of 23-1/4" long x 17" wide x 18-1/2" tall, you will want a cargo carrier like the TorkLift Lock and Load # TLA7752. This will not only help carry the generator but also deter theft. If you want...

  • Can the Swagman Platform-Style Bike Rack 64663 be Installed on a Trailer Hitch
  • Yes, you can use the Swagman Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # S64663 with a 2" receiver, like the Curt # E-100 that you referenced, or with the bumper mount that comes with the bike rack. To ensure that this fits your application you can measure 6-3/4" from the front end of your bumper as that is about where the rearmost cradle will sit of the Swagman bike rack. If you would like to add locks to this bike rack then part # S64027 will lock the bike rack while 2 of the padlocks # 131D...

  • Trailer Hitch for Keystone Springdale Travel Trailer to Carry Bikes
  • There is a way for you to carry bikes with a trailer hitch on your 2016 Keystone Springdale 270LE, though based on my research it does have a square bumper, so you would need either the Curt RV Bumper 2" Trailer Hitch # E-100 if the bumper is 4" x 4" square or Ultra-Fab 2" Trailer Hitch # UF35-946401 if your bumper is 4-1/2" x 4". • Will the # 64025 Swagman RV 2 inch Receiver Bumper Mount Adapter Mount Underneath the RV Bumper
  • One option we have for mounting a receiver under the bumper of your RV is the RV Bumper 2 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, item # E-100. The only problem I see with the location you are suggesting is the distance from the bottom of the receiver to the road surface. If there is not enough clearance the clamp on hitch, bike rack shank or bikes themselves may make contact with the road and damage one or all of the components including the RV bumper. I spoke with my contact at Swagman and was...

  • Will RV Bumper Mount Trailer Hitch # E-100 Fit a 4 Inch by 2 Inch Bumper on a Trailer
  • I do have a possible solution for adding a trailer hitch to your trailer but # E-100 will not fit because the bumper on your trailer needs to be 4 inches by 4 inches (100mm x 100mm). I recommend installing a frame mount trailer hitch, # 13703. This hitch can be welded or bolted to the frame of a trailer provided the trailer frame is 22 to 72 inches wide. If welding, the hitch should be installed by a qualified professional welder. I have included a link to the installation details for you...

They cannot be used on spot-welded or aluminum bumpers. Part # C19101 from Curt is one example. The only requirement is that you use the support strap part # 18050 for any non-towing applications in addition to staying within the 350 lb tongue weight (TW) and 3,500 lbs gross trailer weight (GTW) rating. I have attached a review video of the hitch for you as well.

  • Receiver Hitch for Rear of Jayco 22 Foot Camper

If the bumper is steel, and has adequate capacity, you could have the 6 inch combo bar you referenced welded in place. However, this piece is sold as a fabrication part only and it would be up to you or the welder to do the engineering work to determine if the receiver will have the necessary capacity. You will need to check to see if your bumper fits this description and if it is rated for this application. I recommend going with a frame mount hitch. If this is the case then I recommend using the Curt RV Bumper 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E-100 which will not require any alterations to your undercarriage. • Will The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, # TH963PRO, Fit On A Spare Tire On A Trailer
  • The Thule Spare Me 2 Bike Carrier, # TH963PRO, is not designed for use on the back of trailers. If you have a 4 inch to 4-1/2 inch square, continuous weld bumper on your RV you could use the Swagman RV Bumper 2 Bike Rack, # S80501. It will not work on aluminum or spot welded bumpers.
