Video Transcript for Curt RV and Camper Hitch - Frame Mount Hitch - 13703 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs. Now, this universal hitch is designed for use on RVs and motor homes. It gives you a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver opening, so it's going to be great for hauling your RV approved accessories such as bike racks, hitch mounted cargo carriers and other similar accessories as well, as well as for towing. When it comes to the maximum gross trailer weight rating that's going to be 3,500 pounds with a maximum tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds. Please note that this unit is not approved and not designed for weight distribution systems. It does feature these heavy-duty side brackets. These are going to allow for a maximum adjustability, so you can see here that these side brackets slide along that main body tube.

That way you can set it to the width that you need. It's going to feature your pre-drilled holes. That way you can easily get that bracket secured to the main body whenever you find the width that you need for your application. It's going to come with all the necessary installation hardware, and the hardware to get the bracket secured to the main body tube. That way it's steady and secure when you're ready to install it on your RV, motor home, or camper. The unit's made from a sturdy steel construction. It's going to feature a black powder coated finish which is very durable.

It's going to last a long time. It's going to resist rust and corrosion, ensuring that the unit doesn't get harmed by the elements. It's going to resist sun damage so it's not going to fade. It's just going to look good for a really long time. Now, when it comes to the minimum frame width that this can accommodate, that's going to be 22 inches. Maximum frame width is up to 72 inches, so this will work for any width between 22 inches all the way out to 72 inches, so it's a very versatile universal hitch.

It's designed to work on box frame, C channel frame, or I beam frame applications. Another neat feature about the unit is you can actually, if you have enough room at the mounting location you can actually position the tube mounts toward the front or rear, which for your application is going to put the hitch body in the best location for the clearance that you need. The unit features strong, secure all frame attachment, so that paired with the solid steel construction really helps it increase strength and overall safety. Again, your receiver tube opening measures 2 inches by 2 inches. You're going to have a 2 1/2 inch measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the opening of the receiver tube. It's got that nice rolled collar right there that goes around, but it does have a flush opening. Your pin hole diameter is 5/8 of an inch.

Hitch pin and clip or hitch lock, those items are sold separately, so if you're in need of those you can find them here at etrailer.com. It's also got the safety chain loop brackets welded on there. Those holes right here, one located on each side for your safety chain connections, they measure 1 inch front to back, 1 5/8 inch side to side. It's going to feature a class III rating. The bracket thickness for the side plates and for the safety chain loops, that's a 1/4 inch thick steel. I do want to spend some time just going over the measurements here of these brackets. You're going to notice that on these brackets we have four holes. Also, there's going to be two holes, one right here and one right here, so you would attach coming up that way as well. I just want to give you the measurements of those real quick. The actual bracket has an overall width measurement of about 12 inches. From very bottom to very top measured about 12 7/8 of an inch, and the mounting area right here has a height measurement of about 4 7/8 of an inch. The mounting holes up and down are separated on center by 2 inches, and then side to side separated on center by 7 1/2 inches. Then these holes here that I pointed out, center on center, those are separated on center by about 10 inches. The unit is covered with a limited lifetime warranty. Now, you need to be aware that all non-trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers that are applied to this product must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps, which are going to be sold separately. The main hitch body tube can be trimmed, so this can be cut. That way that the ends are flush with the frame brackets. After trimming you want to be sure to coat the bare metal with paint, that way it's protected against rust and corrosion. Again, all the necessary installation hardware is included, but if you want to weld this on just keep in mind that all welding surfaces must be cleaned to bare metal. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch for RVs.

Item arrived as scheduled and just as described, who can ask for anything more. Installation was as easy as directions portrayed except for the ab workout that comes along with drilling the holes, haha. 185087

I received my Hitch in only a few days after ordering and all the parts were in the box! I am 72yrs. and rather slow so it took me a few hours each day for several days to get the hitch fully installed on my Artic Wolf 5th wheel RV. The 72 inch wide hitch fit fine and looks excellent. I had no parts left over so I'm good to go. NOTE; the carriage bolt and square hole spacer system worked great for installing some of the hitch bolts inside my "box beam" where access was limited. 556020

I installed on my new 5th wheel to pull a motorcycle trailer. Very heavy duty, finish is holding up nicely. Fitting onto RV was easy and all parts went together nice. I recommend! 446297

Got it pronto. Just what I needed to feel safe pulling my bass boat. Very good quality and strong. Installed on a 2011 Rockwood 30' 8280 WS. The only modification was to move stabilizer jacks forward 3". 258430

This is the 3rd one of these I've put on my trailers. The first one I had welded on and it worked great. The 2nd one was my next rv and I bolted that one on and towed an additional trailer behind it with no issues either. The one I just bought will be installed on my new 5th wheel so I can tow my golf cart behind THIS trailer now too. I'm actually cutting off the factory installed 2 inch receiver to install this one in its place because I'm more confident in this one for towing than the beefy one installed by the factory. Great product! Fast shipping! Easy to install provided you have a drill, bits for steel, and a torque wrench. 575786

Excellent heavy duty hitch. I mounted it on a 2012 Flagstaff Classic 5th wheel and it works great. 495728

Good product; not so good installation instructions. Bolt length a bit long; access hole of 1.5 inches a bit narrow making it almost impossible to fish bolts through 2 X 4 rectangular tubing. I was a bit at fault in not checking the dimensions of the side plates. If the hitch is installed as indicated, realize that trailer clearance will be drastically reduced. 135039

I installed this hitch on the rear of my 2017 BigHorn fifth wheel. This hitch is really designed for installation on a motorhome, but worked quiet nicely being installed between the I-beams at the rearmost of my fifth wheel. We've mainly used it to carry a bike rack, but have used it to pull a boat twice and plan to pull a cargo trailer with motorcycles soon. The only down side to this hitch is that the weight rating is rather low (3500#) and the short non-adjustable length receiver needs an extension in order to project the hitch far enough out from under the trailer to make it usable. 496583

Comments

Although its designed to be used on a RV, the Curt 13703 can be used on your Ram, as long as you observe the 3500 lb towing/350 lb tongue weight capacity. Keep in mind that using a hitch extender will lower the capacity of the hitch by half.

Just received the hitch haven't installed it yet but looks like it's going to work. I was shocked when it showed up in two days, never had that fast of delivery. As soon as I can get it installed I'll update this review with pictures. I can say it is of solid construction and made to last, thought my wife would never get it in the garage. Again Wow on the delivery. 223330

I am reviewing the Curt Adjustable RV Hitch (13703). I purchased the Curt Adjustable RV Hitch for my Fifth Wheel Durango camper. I want to thank the etrailer staff for their assistance with this purchase and especially Kim who did some research on it to answer my questions. This is the third purchase I have made from etrailer.com and I'm always impressed with the assistance and technical information I receive from the staff. I received the hitch very promptly and in good condition. This hitch is a very sturdy hitch in my opinion. I did not find installation instructions with the product when I received it, so I went to the etrailer.com website and found the installation instructions on the product's etrailer webpage, ready to download, which I did. The installation of the hitch required more than the 60 minutes listed on the instructions page. I bolted the hitch on a box frame support under the fifth wheel, which took much longer than welding it on. I would suggest using a half-inch drill as a three-eights drill is just not heavy enough. Using C-clamps, I clamped the hitch in the correct position. I had to drill a couple of extra holes on each end of the hitch brackets due to the proximity of the manufactured holes to the edge of the box frame I was bolting it to. The bolts used are not what is listed on the parts list, which is one-half inch by 2 inches long. The bolts are actually two and one-quarter inches long, which made them too long to place inside the box frame support and be pulled through the drilled holes. I had to cut about three-eighths inch (or four threads) off of each bolt (12 in all) that was placed inside the box frame to be pulled through the frame bracket. These same bolts (4 bolts/2 on each end) also would not work when placed inside the main body tube which was bolted into the frame bracket. Trimming these bolts is what took so much time to complete the project. There is a unique way used to pull the bolts from inside the box frame support through all the drilled holes using a "fishwire'. My hitch came with two fishwires which are used by placing through the drilled holes, screwing the bolts into the wire, and pulling the bolt (with square hole spacer) through the hole from the inside of the box frame support. This process would have been much easier if I had had two inch bolts. The instructions also note that the bolts have to be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. But, it is now mounted to my fifth wheel securely and I am very happy with the hitch and how it fits my camper. Again, thanks to Kim for helping me with questions about the hitch before I purchased it. 462932

The product, shipping and customer service were great. Don't expect this to be a 1 hour job though unless everything is prepped. I installed on a Jayco 243 5er with a boxed frame. Some trimming of water tank cover required. Also found on this 2 in wide frame that trimming the bolts by 3/8 in. helped in fishing the bolts through. One person install, just a little longer than planned. Good heavy duty unit. 129031

Hello PaulI also happen to have a Jayco 243 RKS 5er. Mine is a 1998. My water tank is located at rear of trailer.I am concerned that the water tank would pose a problem for install. Since the frame a is a box style, wouldnt the bolts have to be 3-4 long to pass through box frame? Do you have any pics and suggestions on the install? If you could email me some pics or post them to your post that would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Chuck N.The bolts do not go all the way through the frame, only the outside. The bolts are fished through a hole you will drill with a hole saw on the inside at the rear of the water tank. A special fish tool is included. The demo video and instructions cover it pretty well. Also note on my original review that cutting a small amount off the bolts will facilitate fishing them through. With a little wrestling I was able to do it by by myself but a helper would be nice. Preferably someone with some mechanical experience. Good luck and be sure to pre read the instructions.Paul

I was very pleased with the ordering process, the very quick delivery date, and the installation process. Although I did have to relocate my stabilizer jacks about 4 inches, this was no real issue. The hitch fit like a glove and I was able to install it myself. It took me a little longer than most others because I'm 68 yrs old and also have Parkinson's Disease. So If I can install it, I figure most anyone can. I've included a picture. Thanks etrailer for a great experience. 443026

Like so many other that have written a review on this product......I have no complaints. The hitch is massive and I know will do the job intended. Just make sure you have four to five good sharp drill bits and use the step approach in drilling the holes. I was by myself using jacks and c-clamps to assemble the hitch but only took about 2 1/2 hours. With two people, could probably reduce that time. Overall, completely satisfied. 462910

Install went smoothly, had to relocate the manual scissor jacks that are used to level the RV. Receiver hitch was heavy duty with quality bolting hardware included. 423075

Nice hitch. Had to replace my sewer hose bumper so I could hold a back rack. I had help to hoist hitch up and mount to frame. The hitch adjusted to the width of my frame, we marked holes to be drilled, drilled holes, attached hitch to frame with supplied hardware and we were finished. I have the winter package which meant it took about 15 minutes to move the sheathing out of the way to access the frame but that it was not that much trouble. Hitch is very sturdy and I like the easy of installing myself (with a helper). Quick product delivery and product was what I thought and as explained on the product page. 555661

Product arrived on the expected date. However do to "holes" in the box most of the hardware needed did not ! Kinda a pain in the butt ! Otherwise product is OK, some paint chipping & scratches but that I can live with. Not having the hardware.... no excuses. Piss poor packing in my opinion. 442969

This is the closest receiver hitch I can come to that will fit my travel trailer. I can't use it the way it shows on the web site due to a fresh water tank in between the I beams there. I will modify the mounting brackets and have it welded to my frame by a pro to ensure it stays without any problems. 389534

I have hauled my carrier attached to my camper several times with this hitch and it is perfect. Love the quality and its ridgidity. I mounted it on my 2015 Jayco and it looks like it came on it from the factory.

I like the product but the mounting flanges wouldn't work on my trailer. On each side of the trailer I beam there are the jacks, a bottoming out scrape protector, and then the black water tank. These are all fastened on the inside. If the flanges could mount on the outside it would work. While they can be reversed, then they stick out wider then the i beam and are too far apart to attach the main body tube as they are now wider then 72". What I am doing is welding a 1/4: 6x9 plate to the main bottom tube and then will bolt this to the bottom of trailer i beam. If I can edit my review, I will attach photos of the issue for me and my solution after it is done. Overall, I am still happy with the product. It would have taken more time and money to design my own and then take it to a weld shop. If I was able to weld myself, then I would have built a custom hitch. 469590

I was asked to do a one year follow up review of the etrailer rv hitch that I purchased. I am extremely happy with it. I installed it on my Forest River trailer. It fit very well on this trailer. The hitch is made to fit a lot of different situations. I chose to bolt mine on instead of welding. My trailer is brand new and I did not want to chance any weld splatter, etc. It came with all of the necessary hardware to do either one. I installed it for two reasons. I was installing a platform on the rear of my trailer for the generator. In researching this out, there were two concerns that this would help eliminate. One was that the back bumper could not support the generator. I am transferring some of the generator load to the hitch. The other concern was regarding the strength of the frame. This also transfers some of the load further forward on the frame. I also cut a 1/4" plate to add thickness to the frame from where the hitch hooks on to the rear end of the frame. As noted, it has been a year with many miles of mountain roads and the hitch is performing great. It was easy and straight forward to install. I used an old 1/2" drill motor (large) to drill the holes. I use a bar and chain to create leverage on the drill motor so that a constant hard pressure can be applied to the bit while drilling. As mentioned, I plated the frame so had a 1/2" of plate versus the1/4" frame thickness. The project was done easily in a day. I did it myself (no helper). I am not as young as I used to be (62). I know the UPS driver and saw her a few days later. She apologized for unloading the package in my driveway because it was a bit heavy for her to handle. I just opened the package there and moved the individual pieces to the project site. It is well built and I am very pleased with it. I recommend this to anyone wanting to add a hitch without going to a weld shop. 610573

The hitch I ordered came fast and in perfect condition. It looks to be very well made. The only issue is that I am missing two square washers, but that's OK because I have more from other hitches I have removed. The hardware comes in a ball of shrink wrap and I found two bolts and two washers loose in the box. That is why two washers disappeared. I will try to send pictures when I install hitch. 607363

Product came early; brackets wouldn't fit my 5er (jacks welded in the way; not enough ground clearance for install using brackets). Found a welder to install it over bumper sleeve; it fit exactly between the frame rails over the sewer bumper. It's almost invisible, but supports my motorcycle without any problems. 599691

Comments

This hitch has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, which means that the weight of the bike plus the carrier should not exceed 350 lbs. Given the bouncing that would be experienced at the rear of a towed camper, Id be leery of carrying a motorcycle on the rear of any towed trailer.

I was going to install the hitch on my 2005 21 foot Ameri-lite trailer today. I watched your video on installing the hitch on a similar trailer so I had a good idea of how to proceed. Problem #1: The frame on my trailer is 2X4 box tubing. I believe the mounts are for a 2X6 box frame. I have about 1.5 inches of my side mounts below the bottom of the frame. Problem #2: It is a tight fit to get the drivers side frame mount in position because of the sewer dump. I had to remove the stabilizer legs to attempt the install. This was not a problem as I intended to replace them with jacks anyway. Since I never intend to tow double this is to be used for a luggage rack for my generator and other items. I believe for my purposes I can have a machine shop remove the 1.5 inches from the top so the mounts will fit the frame solidly. I will also have them drill a hole between the two already in place and remove a small portion of the left mount to allow for the sewer line. The rear bumper is light channel iron and I felt a bumper hitch was pushing my luck which is why I ordered this unit.?????????????????????????????? 595500

Well made product which should work for most trailer installs, but be aware that if you have a rear kitchen design as I did that your mounting options are much more limited. Having a grey water tank between the rear frame rails makes it impractical to use the mounts on the inside of the frame rails. I had to cut and modify both my frame rails and the mounting brackets that came with the hitch. Ended up with a nice install but without my plasma cutter and welder would be beyond most DYI people. In hindsight having a fabrication shop custom fit one would have been a much better option. 557832

Do you have a question about this RV and Camper Hitch?

  • Recommended Hitch for Rear of Fifth Wheel Camper for Bike Rack
  • We do offer some frame mounted RV hitches, which you can see by clicking the provided link. To determine which hitch would work best, you will need to measure the distance between your frame members, measured from the outside of one frame member to the outside of the other. If this distance is between 47-71 inches, the Ultra-Fab # UF35-946403 would be my recommendation. There are a few things to be aware of when using an RV mounted hitch like this: 1) The hitch itself is rated...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Use on the Back of a Crossroads 5th Wheel Trailer
  • We have a couple of different options in terms of trailer hitches for 5th wheel trailers. The Curt Hitch, # E-100, that you have referenced is designed to fit on 4 inch square channel bumpers. You will need to check to see if your bumper fits this description and if it is rated for this application. I recommend going with a frame mount hitch. The most versatile frame mount hitch we offer is Curt Hitch, # 13703. It can be bolted or welded on and fits C-channel, I-beam, and Box frames....

  • Recommended Hitch Receiver For Jayco Travel Trailer And 4-Bike Rack Application
  • For your 2017 Jayco Jay Flight SLX 267BHSW travel trailer, I recommend the Ultra-Fab 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver for Trailer Frames # UF35-946403. This is a very nice weld on option adjustable from 47-1/8 to 77 inches. For a bolt on option, I recommend the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 72" Wide # 13703. The Curt model recommends the use of stabilization strap # 18050. The weld on options are nice because they don't require any drilling into your frame, but...

  • Weld On Versus Bolt On Hitch Receiver for Use with Bike Racks and Cargo Carriers on RVs
  • In my opinion you are going in the right direction with a frame mounted receiver. The only advantage to a weld on application is that, if welded properly, the attachment point, weld, will be stronger than the hitch or trailer frame steel and one of those two would have to fail before the weld would break. Bolt on installations are easier to install and are rated for the same capacities as most of the weld on models, and many of the hitches offer both options. For bike racks and cargo...

  • How Does Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch # 13703 Mount to an I-Beam Trailer Frame
  • The way the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13703, mounts to an I-Beam frame is that the top bracket on either side of the hitch attaches to the middle, vertical part of the frame. It sounds as if at that point you have 74 inches. If that is the case then this hitch is not long enough. I have included a link to the installation instructions that show where it attaches for you to view. What you may be able to do is have a hitch fabricated using some of our fabrications parts. I have included a...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier For Forest River R Pod
  • I recommend first installing a trailer hitch on the back of your Rpod, and then a hitch mounted bike carrier. The trailer hitch I recommend is the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch, part # 13703. This will work with RVs that have a frame width between 22 and 72 inches. The hitch can be bolted on or welded on. The bike carrier I recommend is the Let's Go Aero VeeMe V2 2-Bike Rack, part # VME-V2. This rack is RV rated and has a weight capacity of 50-lbs per bike. This rack weight...

  • Trailer Hitch and Motorcycle Carrier for the Back of a Travel Trailer
  • Curt RV frame mount hitch # 13703 has a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds. So the Honda Ruckus would be fine but the Suzuki would be too heavy since you also have to factor in the weight of a carrier. With this hitch Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or cargo carrier) per their warranty requirements. For a hitch with a higher capacity that does not require the strap I recommend # C13702....

  • Frame Mounted Trailer Hitch for Travel Trailer
  • We do indeed offer some hitches that are designed to bolt to the frame of your travel trailer. If the frame members on your travel trailer are between 18-51 inches apart, the Curt Hitch # C13701 would be an excellent choice, with it's tongue weight capacity of 500 lbs. For frame members between 22-72 inches apart, use the Curt Hitch # 13703, which has a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs.

  • Options for Carrying Bike Racks When Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • We do have options for carrying bikes when towing a fifth wheel trailer, however, we do not carry any bike racks that were specifically designed to carry bikes on the front of a vehicle. Bikes mounted on the front of the vehicle can block your line of site, headlights and turn signals and the airflow to your engine. When towing a fifth wheel trailer, airflow to the engine is crucial. When I am towing my fifth wheel trailer, I use the Swagman Bumper Mount Bike Rack, # S80501. This type...

  • Recommended Receiver Hitch for Rear of Forest River Fifth Wheel
  • I'd begin by contacting Forest River to ensure that the frame members at the rear of your fifth wheel have sufficient capacity to carry the weight of the carrier and the scooter without damaging anything. If Forest River gives you the go-ahead, I'd recommend the # UF35-946403 hitch, which is compatible with frame members that are between 47-3/8 to 77 inches apart, measured from the inside of the frame. This hitch is a weld on application, and has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity, meaning...

  • Best Way to Install RV Trailer Hitch on I-Beam Frame with a 4 Inch Bumper Below on a 2014 Reflection
  • The 2014 reflection by Grand Design model 337RLS with a 4-inch bumper you referenced won't work with Curt RV hitch # 13703 if you need something that drops down more than 4 inches. The reason is because the bracket won't go down far enough. See picture I included. What you may be able to do is have a hitch fabricated using some of our fabrications parts. I have included a link to them for you to view. A local machine shop or a shop that works on trailers should be able to determine what...

  • Will a Receiver Hitch Work on an I-Beam Frame on My 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I do not believe the C13702 Adjustable Width Motor Home Hitch is the best option for your I-beam frame. We have an adjustable width trailer hitch for the RV, part number 13703 that would work better. With this hitch you would be able to install the brackets on the inside of the I-beam and would have 6 bolts holding it in place providing a much larger mounting surface than the other hitch you'd mentioned. The distance from the bend in the mounting plates of the 13703 where it sits on...

  • Recommended Frame-Mount Trailer Hitch for Winnebago Motorhome

It offers a 350-lb tongue weight capacity. This item fits on box frame, C-channel frame, or I-beam frame RVs. This is a Class III hitch; no class IV hitches are available in this universal-fit type. • Bumper Mounted Hitch Recommendation to Tow a Small Trailer and a Golf Cart
  • The main purpose of the Swagman Bumper Mount Adapter, # S64025, is to carry a bike rack behind your RV and it should not be used for towing. Instead, I would recommend installing a universal RV trailer hitch like the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch, # 13703, if you are looking for a hitch for an RV. This hitch will fit frames 22 inches to 72 inches wide and it has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and a 350 lb tongue weight capacity. For a bumper mounted receiver, you can look at the Curt...

It can be bolted or welded on to box frames, C-channel frames, or I-beam frames that are between 18" and 51" wide. It is a Class III rated hitch with a maximum capacity of 5,000 lbs and maximum tongue weight of 500 lbs. • Can an Enclosed Trailer be Towed Behind a 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Towing one trailer behind another trailer is illegal in many places so the first thing you are going to want to do is check the laws where you will be traveling. It is also just not a good idea because it is not safe. The likelihood of jackknifing and a bad sway condition is greatly increased plus there is a lot more momentum pushing you forward. If installing a trailer hitch on the 5th wheel I strongly recommend a frame mounted hitch, not a bumper mount hitch. The bumper mount hitches...

  • Recommended Hitch and Bike Rack Options for Rear of Heartland Bighorn 3610RE 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Before attempting to install a hitch on the rear of a 5th wheel, I always recommend consulting the 5th wheel manufacturer to ensure that the rear structure of the 5th wheel is strong enough to handle the weight of a bike rack and the bikes it carries. I called Heartland, who confirmed that using a hitch on the rear of your 5th wheel is acceptable, but you should not under ANY circumstances use the hitch for towing. Although the capacity of the hitch might be greater, Heartland states that...

  • Spare Tire Mount Recommendation for Trailers with Limited Frame Space
  • We do have a couple different spare tire mount options for you to check out. You could go with the Spare Tire Carrier for E-Track Systems, # RA-16HST, that you referenced, but you will also need an E-Track rail. For this I recommend the 4 ft Vertical E-Track, # E19146. The E-track system was primarily designed to be installed inside of an enclosed trailer, but you could install it on the outside of the trailer if you would like. I do not recommend installing it on the side of the trailer...

We offer two frame-mount hitches that can fit on a 72-inch-wide trailer frame (measured from the outside of one rail to the outside of the other). • Hitch for Towing a Boat Trailer Behind a Travel Trailer
