Engine Heat Exchange

The engine heat exchanger allows you to heat the tank water as you drive so that the water will be ready for you when you reach your destination. It hooks up to your engine's coolant system, and transfers engine heat to the water heater. This heat is automatically transferred when the RV's engine is running. No switch is required for activation. The double-walled tubing used in this system prevents engine coolant from contaminating your fresh water.

Because the pilot light can only be lit when the vehicle stops, tank water is usually heated after you reach your destination. Doing so can take up to 30 minutes. Not only does the heat exchanger on this water heater help to heat your water faster, but it also conserves gas. A typical water heater that uses propane alone requires 27-percent more gas to heat the full tank by itself once the destination is reached.

Video Transcript for Review of Atwood RV Water Heaters - Standard Water Heater w Heat Exchange - AT96163

Today we're going to take a look at the Atwood RV 8,800 Btu, gas and electric water heater with the heat exchanger and automatic pilot and a six gallon tank. Now this RV water heater has an engine heat exchanger that will heat the water as you drive. Also has an automatic direct spark gas pilot and electric heating element, to continue to supply hot water at your destination. This is a quick recovery gas water heater; provides a long lasting supply of hot water with a small lightweight tank. Produces up to 18 gallons of hot water per hour. It is an aluminum clad tank, reduces calcium buildup, limits corrosion, eliminates the need for an anode rod.If you notice on the back you have your two outlets here. This is your hot water outlet on top; cold water inlet on the bottom. They are both half inch NPT connections.

Here you can see the heat exchanger connections. The engine heat exchangers what'll connect to you RV's radiator system and it heats the water as you drive, so there's no waiting for the tank to heat up when you arrive at your destination. It's a double tube construction; prevents engine fluid from contaminating your water and it saves energy and reduces propane use about 27%.Let me open the door in the front and we'll talk about the guest pilot. You just twist this. That'll allow you to drop the door down and right down here you'll have your automatic direct spark gas pilot. This'll heat the water once a destination is reached and it relights automatically until your heater's switched off.

Does use a U-shaped flue tube to distribute more heat from the burner out to the water and it gives you 80% heating efficiency rating. The gas line right here, you'll bring in through here and then your gas line connects right here. The gas line, uses a three eighths inch flared LP gas line. Does offer an electric heating element also to assist the flue tube to heat your water faster and that's made of incoloy construction, prevents burnout, and that type of construction is a nickel, iron, chromium alloy construction and it has less than 50% nickel context. It is thermostatically controlled to prevent overheating. Does also have a high temperature limit switch which will automatically shut off the unit. Also included, you can see right here, they offer this double panel switch here.

This comes with it allows you to power the electric and the gas on and off individually, and this is designed to mount in your coach for a nice easy operation. This heater does include a pressure relief valve right over here. This prevents excessive water expansion and it also has an air pocket in the tank to keep that valve from dripping in your cabinet. Does use a combustion shutter to adjust the oxygen level and the pilot light for high altitudes and it's externally sealed to help keep the unit clean. You can see the door I've already attached just to show you what it looks like. It is a nice wide access door. It's all included and you can see when you open the door all your serviceable parts are very easy to access.

So then you just go close it, push it up in there, twist that, flip it down, that'll hold it into place. This unit is small, lightweight for easy an fit into your RV's cabinet. The weight on is about 19 pounds. It is CSA certified, made in the USA. Specs on this, it's 120 volts ac. The wattage is 1400 watts. Heating capacity is 8,880 Btu's .I want to give you a few dimensions on this. We'll first measure the door. The width on the door is right at 18 inches. Height on it is 14 and a half inches and if we lower the door, just measure the inside width on the 16 inches. Height on the inside is right at 12 and a half inches tall. Total depth on the unit is right at 18 inches deep and we again mention the tank capacity is six gallons. So again you can just push this up and once you get it up far enough you can just twist that and flip it down. It holds it in place. There is a little opening there that you can look into to make sure to check on your pilot light. That does include a nice set of detailed instructions. Comes with some corner mounting brackets for it.That should do it for the review on the Atwood RV 8,800 But Gas and Electric Water Heater with a heat exchanger, automatic pilot and a six gallon tank.

The water heater showed up in perfect condition, packaged well. This unit was a perfect fit to replace my Atwood, model GC6AA-10E. Installed in Jayco camper. Super easy install. I took pictures of all my wiring before disconnecting my old unit. This made the install even easier because the new part has the same color code. Total time for removal of old and install new was about an hour or less. I was curious about the heat tube for use in a motor home, but it creates zero issues for fit and clearance. 657448

  • Atwood RV Water Heater with Electric Operation That Matches 12-1/2 x 16 x 18 Dimensions
  • We do have Atwood RV water heaters in both gas-only and gas/AC-electric types but we do not have an electric-only water heater. The standard gas/AC-electric unit that matches your 12-1/2 x 16 x 18 dimensions is the 6-gallon # AT96117. Model # AT96163 is similar but also includes a heat exchanger. If you want to operate one of these water heaters with only 120-volt AC electric power that is certainly possible.

  • Gas Water Heater Replacement With Gas/Electric Water Heater
  • Your 1994 Coachman 248TB's factory Atwood G6A-7e is 16" W x 12-1/2" H x 18"D. You can replace it with the gas/electric unit like the manual pilot # AT96117 or the Automatic pilot # AT96163. Both of these units will be the same size, so you will just need to add the electric which will require installing a # 10-2-1 wire to your circuit breaker in the 120V power panel.

  • Does Heat Exchange Have to be Used With Atwood RV Water Heater 96163?
