Video Transcript for Atwood RV Water Heaters - Standard Water Heater - AT96117 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Atwood 120 Volt Gas and Electric Quick Recovery RV Water Heater. Now, this RV water heater uses a gas pilot light and an internal electric heating element to get hot water ready fast. It's very small, lightweight. Nice, easy fit in your RVs cabinet. It is a quick recovery water heater, so it does provide a long lasting supply of hot water with a small, lightweight tank. It will produce up to 18 gallons of hot water per hour.

Does use a propane gas pilot that must be manually lit to heat the water once the destination is reached. It will automatically relight until the flame is blown out. Does use a U-shaped flue tube to distribute more heat from the burner out to the water, and it has 80% heating efficiency rating. The electric heating element will assist the flue tube to heat the water faster. Uses an incoloy construction to prevent burnout. The tank on the back here that's insulated is an aluminum clad tank, reduces calcium buildup, limits corrosion, and it eliminates the need for an anode rod.

It is thermostatically controlled to prevent overheating. Has a high temperature limit switch to automatically shut off the unit. Does have a pressure release valve right here. That pressure release valve will prevent excessive water expansion. Has air pocket in the tank to keep the valve from dripping in your cabinet.

Uses a combustion shutter to adjust the oxygen level in the pilot light for high altitudes, and it's externally sealed to keep the unit clean. The drain plug is nylon, it's right back here. This will help prevent rust. Does have serviceable parts that are accessible from the exterior RV door. The open unit can be hooked up and tested before the side walls are sealed.

It is a lightweight, compact easy fit, CSA certified, and made in the USA.Here's the exterior door that would go on the front once you get it installed. You can see that would go on the front just like that. Now again, the heating capacity on this is 8800 BTU, tank capacity is six gallons. Total weight on it is only 19 pounds. The wattage is 1400 watts. The gas line size it uses is a 3/8" outer diameter. The last thing I do is want to give you some dimensions on this, show you how small it actually is. The width on it, overall width is going to be right at 16" wide. The height on it is going to be right at 12-1/2" tall, and total depth of it is going to be right at 18" deep. Does come with a nice set of detailed instructions, all the parts you need to install it. But that should do it for the review on the Atwood 120 Volt Gas and Electric Quick Recovery RV Water Heater.

This is my first time ordering from etrailer.com and I'm really pleased with the experience. PRICE I just happened to come across your site. I was shopping a for a replacement Atwood water heater on a largely known camper website. As I continued shopping/searching, your website came up and your price for the identical model water heater was $50 dollars cheaper than competitors prices and you included free shipping!! PRODUCT & INSTALLATION The Atwood AT96117 that I ordered was a direct replacement for the original Atwood GC6AA-7 water heater. It arrived 2 days earlier than anticipated, in great condition and professionally packaged in a Factory "Atwood" box with logo, unit features, and such displayed on the sides. Once removed from the box, the replacement process went smoothly. Everything is explained in the provided literature. As I mentioned above, this water heater installation is a direct replacement. The physical size of this unit is identical to the original and that it slid easily through the access hole and into position. The 2 water lines, gas line, and electrical are all located in the same locations as well. The cold water inlet fitting and the hot water outlet fitting will need to be transferred from the old unit to the new water heater. Be sure to use thread sealant tape or compound in order to prevent leaks. This is a simple task, and there are many sources online where you can learn how to use thread sealant tape if you are unsure. This project is well within reach of any individual with DIY interests. I'm very pleased with etrailer.com. I found the price of this product unbeatable and their attention to customer service exceptional. Now that I'm aware of www.etrailers.com I will definitely be returning to your site whenever I'm looking for parts for my travel trailer. This purchase was a Great Experience!! Thank You! 591284

Sorry no pics of the install of my new Dometic 6 gallon, 2 way water heater. I found some floor damage I will have to repair first. The price was the best on the internet web, shipped early and looks of good quality. Good instruction booklet written in plain English (not translated to English ). Will shop etrailer again.. I bought my RV used and did not look in the right places for wear or damage. The old tank and pipes had not been winterized properly by previous owner, and tank had split open. I could have gotten welded, but the price on etrailer convinced me to go with a replacement heater. The temp. cutoff sensors, frame, gas valve and control came with the new unit. I used the turn-key unit to replace one that was 17 years old. I am also happy a new outer door came with the unit. 551364

Do you have a question about this RV Water Heater?

  • Atwood RV Water Heater with Electric Operation That Matches 12-1/2 x 16 x 18 Dimensions
  • We do have Atwood RV water heaters in both gas-only and gas/AC-electric types but we do not have an electric-only water heater. The standard gas/AC-electric unit that matches your 12-1/2 x 16 x 18 dimensions is the 6-gallon # AT96117. Model # AT96163 is similar but also includes a heat exchanger. If you want to operate one of these water heaters with only 120-volt AC electric power that is certainly possible.

  • Gas Water Heater Replacement With Gas/Electric Water Heater
  • Your 1994 Coachman 248TB's factory Atwood G6A-7e is 16" W x 12-1/2" H x 18"D. You can replace it with the gas/electric unit like the manual pilot # AT96117 or the Automatic pilot # AT96163. Both of these units will be the same size, so you will just need to add the electric which will require installing a # 10-2-1 wire to your circuit breaker in the 120V power panel.

If your current unit is a 6-gallon it is unlikely that a 10-gallon replacement will fit but you can compare the dimensions of yours to those for the various units we offer. • Atwood RV Water Heater Gets Water Too Hot
  • The only way to turn down the Atwood RV Water Heater part # AT96117 is to remove the front cover and use the blue dial to turn the knob to warm. The water heater is designed to heat the water to 140 degrees so I would add cold water when turning on the faucet. The thermostat is designed to not allow the water heater to overheat. If it goes over 140 degrees the unit shuts off and needs to be replaced according to Atwood.

  • How to Electric/Gas Heaters Power in Campers
  • The install of a gas and electric water heater like the part # AT96117 is recommended to be done by a qualified installer. It's nothing crazy though. Basically the power needs to be ran to the 120 volt power source that the RV already has like any other electric appliance. Sometimes people will run the power cable of the heater externally so that they can power it direclty from a campsite power source to prevent burdening the RV's power source but that's not always needed.

  • Can Atwood RV Water Heater - Gas and Electric Run Just Off of Electricity
  • The electric part of water heater # AT96117 can run all the time with or without the propane pilot active. The electric part is meant to keep the water hot while you are traveling (because presumably the trailer or RV battery will be providing an electrical charge while the vehicle is running). Then once you reach your destination and can't run electric without the vehicle running or when connected to shore power you can turn off the electric part and use the propane only.

  • Does Heat Exchange Have to be Used With Atwood RV Water Heater 96163?
  • There is no reason you absolutely have to have the heat exchange system in use with the Atwood RV Water Heater # AT96163, but if you go that route you will be paying quite a bit extra more for part of the system you are not going to be using. The heat exchange offers a convenient way to heat up water as you drive, as opposed to having to wait until you reach your destination and manually light the pilot. • Atwood Gas and Electric RV Water Heater # AT96117 is a quick-recovery type that is intended to provide a long-lasting supply of hot water. However, water staying hot for 36 hours, a pretty long time, suggests that the unit has cycled back on to maintain temperature. This unit operates on both 120V electric and on propane so odds are your propane supply maintained water temperature. My contact at Atwood/Dometic said the unit is unlikely to keep water hot that long without cycling on.
