Engine Heat Exchange

The engine heat exchanger allows you to heat the tank water as you drive so that the water will be ready for you when you reach your destination. It hooks up to your engine's coolant system, and transfers engine heat to the water heater. This heat is automatically transferred when the RV's engine is running. No switch is required for activation. The double-walled tubing used in this system prevents engine coolant from contaminating your fresh water.

Because the pilot light can only be lit when the vehicle stops, tank water is usually heated after you reach your destination. Doing so can take up to 30 minutes. Not only does the heat exchanger on this water heater help to heat your water faster, but it also conserves gas. A typical water heater that uses propane alone requires 27-percent more gas to heat the full tank by itself once the destination is reached.

After 12 years of hard California water, my Atwood model GEH16 EXT water heater tank developed pin holes. I would call this heater a direct replacement. Mounting holes, size, wiring, and water/engine coolant/propane connection locations were identical. It comes with a white exterior access door, however the closing latch and hinge points were also identical to the original, allowing use of the original RV door. I only gave it 4 stars due to the attention to detail during factory assembly. The pressure relief valve was tighten to face the heat defuser assemble, and required adjustment. Some of the control box wires were pulled tight against the pressure relief valve, relaxing the excess wrap of the wires improved the routing and eliminated chafing. The engine coolant hose connection points are shorter than the original, not protruding beyond the styrafoam case as far. Making installing and tightening the hose clamps more difficult. Overall very happy with the product and the assistance the etrailer staff provided in the selection, and quick shipping. As with any product, inspect how its assembled from the factory and correct items that would create issues later. 653949

Heater works great. However if I were to change one thing. That would be to add a thermostat. It gets very hot. 728074

This water heater was a direct replacement for my Atwood GEH16 EXT. The shipping was very fast, and it is very well packed in the box. The only thing not included with this water heater was the mix valve that screws into the back. If your replacing an old water heater with this one it is a good idea to replace this valve too. This water heater was exactly like my old one and works perfectly !!! Thanks etrailer 713349

Product arrived on time & once installed, functioned as original unit. It was a difficult uninstall & install but thats an Atwood & Winnibago problem. 683256

Installment was a little challenging. I had to install an extra electric switch. That being said the heater itself and production of hot water is excellent. I think it’s a great product. 496365

Do you have a question about this RV Water Heater?

  • RV Water Heater to Replace Atwood Model GCH10A-3E
  • To replace your Atwood water heater model GCH10A-3E in your Itasca motorhome the correct part to order is # AT94023, not # AT94191 which you referenced. I confirmed the fit of this part with my tech contact there. Atwood recommends installation (and service) be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier. The unit's dimensions are 16 tall x 15-1/2 wide x 20-7/8 deep, which are the same as # AT94191.

  • How to Install the On/Off Switch Panel for Atwood Gas and Electric Water Heaters Part # AT91230
  • I have attached the wiring diagram for the Replacement Double-Panel On/Off Switch for Atwood Gas and Electric Combination Water Heaters part # AT91230. The installation will be very simply with only 5 connections needed. There will be three terminals that go to the water heater (orange, blue, white), one terminal that goes to a 12 volt power source, and one terminal that goes to a ground. In order to make these connections I recommend using four of the Female Spade Terminal Quick-Disconnect...

  • How to Remove Old RV Water Heater to Install New Unit
  • When removing a water heater, you want to remove the cover completely first and then the screws in the face plate. Next make sure you have drained all of the water from the unit. You will want to remove your electric connection and propane connection before removing those features. The outside edge of the frame is normally sealed so you will need to carefully remove caulk to allow the frame to move freely. On the underside, you should have an access panel to get to your water and electrical...

  • You are absolutely on the right track! For your Atwood model GCH10S-4E Water Heater, the Atwood RV Heater w/ Heat Exchange # AT94023 referenced in your question will be an exact replacement. This is indeed the same model you currently have and simply has a different part number for retail purposes. This is a great unit that features an engine heat exchanger to heat the water as you drive and an automatic direct-spark gas pilot and electric heating element that will continue to supply...

  • Terminals Functions for the Atwood Replacement Double-Panel On/Off Switch
  • I wish that I could verify what function each of your wires carry but unfortunately if your wires are different colors then I won't be able to verify that right off-hand. If the Double-Panel On/Off Switch # AT91230 is exactly the same as what you have now though and you have either the Atwood RV Water Heater part # AT96163, part # AT94022, or part # AT94023 you should be able to just disconnect each wire and connect them to the exact same terminal on this replacement switch. • Will Atwood Water Heater AT94023 Replace Atwood GH10-3E
  • The Atwood Water Heater part # AT94023 is a 10 gallon (like what you have), but is gas and electric unlike the current one you have which is only gas. Aside from that they are basically the same size and provide similar heating as they are both 10,000 BTU. It would wire in similar to your current setup and can work without having an AC unit installed as well.

  • How to Locate Electric Heating Element in RV Water Heater
  • The actual electric heating element for your water heater, an item like # AT92249, is usually going to be located near the bottom of the unit since it must be immersed in the water tank. The element will have two wires leading to it to bring it power and this is often an easy way to find it. In the combination gas/electric heaters like Atwood # AT94023 the electric heating element may be behind the gas element, as shown by the yellow arrow in the linked photo.

  • Replacement for Atwood RV Water Heater GE16-EXT
  • The closest replacement we have for the Atwood RV Water Heater GE16-EXT is the Atwood RV Water Heater w/ Heat Exchange GCH10A-4E part # AT94023. The GCH10A-4E has both gas and electric features just like the GE16-EXT as well as a 10 gallon capacity. However, the GE16-EXT has a valve to mix in cool water so that that the 10 gallon capacity is more like 16 gallons. The GCH10A-4E however has a heat exchange that connects to RV's radiator system and heats the water as you drive. Therefore,...

  • Can 10 Gallon Water Heater Replace 6 Gallon Water Heater
  • Since the dimensions of the 10 gallon Atwood RV Water Heater w/ Heat Exchange # AT94023 are different, and this is a larger unit, I would not be able to absolutely guarantee a fit. This 10 gallon heater is 16" tall x 15-1/2" wide x 20-7/8" deep so you need to make sure you have at least that much space in order for the unit to fit, and the vent on the front of the 10 gallon unit is also going to be in a different spot because it is a larger unit. • Replace the OD50 in my 2017 Forest River Berkshire XL with Atwood 10 Gallon # AT94023
  • The Atwood RV Water Heater w/ Heat Exchange - Gas and Electric - Automatic Pilot - 120 Volt - 10 Gallon # AT94023 is 16" tall x 15-1/2" wide x 20-7/8" deep. The door dimensions are 17-3/4" tall x 18" wide. Based on my research the OD 50 model is 16" D x 12-1/2" W x 12-1/2" H without door so it will take up more space. I've attached the wiring diagram as you asked. I'll email the instructions separately as it is a large file.
